Don't let it being vegan deter you one bit: the flavors are unique, staff is friendly, and everything is delicious, We tried their furikake croissant, twice baked croissant (had almond and gooey chocolate inside dusted with powdered sugar), passion fruit coconut scone (all dimensions of the flavors shone through), and tomato sammie (with cauliflower inside). I didn't think we'd finish all 4 but we did outside on the patio. It's a nice little courtyard shared with other surrounding businesses. This is the coolest little nook of bungalows. A part of me wants it to be hidden because it's such an endearing place and it hasn't been crowded yet when I've gone around breakfast time. There is a Korean place, coffee shop, Cassell's burgers, and one more place on the way besides the bakery. Best part about the bakery (besides everything being delicious), is that it's all vegan! From scones to cookies, to croissants, they have it all and no one would ever know it's all vegan. One of my favorite things now that I've been there a few times are the furikake crostinis. Randomly found this spot on Yelp and so glad I did. Bakers Bench is a tiny little bakery tucked away on a quiet street, sharing a cozy yard with Cassell's Hamburgers. Walking in literally feels like stepping into someone's home. The bakery itself is small, but they've got a big outdoor patio with plenty of seating and a restroom out back. There was a short line, but it moved quickly. Staff was super friendly and helpful when I had questions about the pastries. Their lineup is unique --furikake croissant, eggroll danish, black sesame cookie, sesame pineapple muffin, yuzu scone, black sesame banana danish... I don't think I've ever been that excited over a selection of pastries. They were all so creative. I ended up getting the black sesame banana danish and absolutely loved it. Perfect croissant-to-filling ratio, a bold sesame flavor that was balanced with sweet banana slices, and sugar crystals on top that added a great crunch. Easily one of the best pastries I've had in a long time. My friends tried the chocolate croissant (solid) and the furikake croissant (good idea, but could've used more flavor). Only thing I wish they had was better coffee--they only have a batch brew. But still, great experience, cool setting, and an ideal spot for a chill outdoor hangout. Obsessed is an understatement. Ever since I made my way over to bakers bench I've been back three times (in the last month), and I plan on going back at least every two weeks! My son has dairy egg and nut allergies which means that we tend to eat at lots of vegan places. My son never had a good vegan croissant so when I read about baker's bench I knew I wanted to take him there for a mommy and son outing. The look on his face when he tried a good vegan croissant was priceless. As a non vegan when I say these croissants are as good, if not better, than most croissants, I mean it. Oh my word, I just had the best chocolate croissant of my life. It was flaky, crisp on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. The chocolate is a proper chocolate ribbon inside, not the custard abominations that usually fill vegan croissants. All the baked goods here are vegan, but you can't even tell. Jennifer is the kindest and most down to earth person you'll meet in LA. We met her the week before their grand opening when we were looking for the new location and she said to come back on the correct day. Nat was very friendly and patient as I pondered about which treat to pick. There's a really cute garden around the building (a converted house) that our dogs had fun exploring. The gender-neutral restrooms in the courtyard are super clean and a nice amenity. All street parking, but not that hard to find on the weekdays. read more

I've been following Bakers Bench on Instagram for awhile now because it's owned by a friend of a co-worker/colleague. We've never met, but I know Jennifer Yee had stints in the kitchens of famous chefs (Thomas Keller, Jean-Georges Vongerichten) before opening a kiosk in Chinatown's Far East Plaza (home to Howlin' Ray's chicken and Now Serving cookbook bookstore). This brick and mortar opened just last month. It's my first time trying their treats; I was enticed by the gorgeous-looking berry pies they were making just for July 4. I think all of their goods are vegan, which I am 100% not. I learned this area of LA is called Victor Heights. I call it Dodger Stadium and Chinatown-adjacent. Perhaps its most famous eatery, Eastside Market Italian Deli, is just down the street. Bakers Bench is housed in the rear section of a lovely Craftsman-style home, with several patios and a garden surrounding it, plus other small buildings. I think the whole development is called Alpine Courtyard. Currently, besides Bakers Bench, Heavy Water Coffee, a branch of Cassell's Hamburgers and Perilla banchan shop are open. The area is primarily residential and parking can be a challenge, but no more so than in Chinatown. I like fruit-forward sweets, so along with my pre-ordered pie, I sampled a strawberry almond danish (also had peaches or nectarines), blueberry muffin, jammy (shortbread cookie), strawberry coconut scone, and a chocolate chip cookie. Everything was delish. The danish pastry was super flaky, probably similar to their croissants for which they are known. The pie had a lemon verbena cream/custard base, the perfect berries were sourced from Two Peas in a Pod farm in San Luis Obispo. My only niggle is, being 100% non-vegan, I missed the taste of real butter in the pie crust, danish and jammy, but did not miss it in the muffin, cookie or scone. Interestingly, when paying by card, there was no step to add a tip, highly unusual these days, although there was a small card fee. I was told there's a discount if you bring your own bag. They have a variety of baked goods but our favorite was the egg roll croissant, onion danish, and tomato croissant sandwich (house made tomato paste and cauliflower). I love pastries, especially savory ones and Bakers Bench makes my favorite ones. My favorite being their summer corn chili crisp danish and their furikake croissant. Their sweet desserts definitely lean more toward the no too sweet side which initially caught me off guard, they're still delicious I just definitely lean more toward their savory options. They use lot of seasonal produce in all their pastries which I love. I'm vegetarian and my sister is vegan so finding spots we can go to and both enjoy is important to me. We love coming here together and we recommend it to everyone vegan or not they're so good! I'm both happy and sad I don't live closer because I'd be their way too often. read more

However, these were some of the worst pastries I've ever had. 1) Everything I received was greasy and soaked into the box. I had to transfer the contents to a new box at home. 2) The Furikake Croissant was very salty and inedible. 3) The oat blueberry muffin was doughy. 4) The macadamia toffee cookie (?) was oily and doughy. 5) I had no desire to try anymore, so I threw away the last pastry filled with corn. There are many places to get delicious, well-baked pastries around LA. The woman behind the counter was great and I liked the new variety of flavors presented. It took me a while to decide what I wanted since it all looked amazing. 10/10 want to go back and try other pastries! Street parking was easy to find, but it did take me a second to figure out where the storefront was when I parked. Bright sunshiny courtyard with plenty of seating. I still don't think these pastries beat non-vegan pastries in terms of flavor, but if you're a vegan who is also a foodie, then Baker's Bench is perfect for you!!! The texture and chewiness were on point. The double chocolate espresso cookie was on the same par in the texture department; not too hard and not too soft. Having an allergy to dairy has really limited my ability to enjoy pastries such as these and I wish I found Bakers Bench sooner! The Furikake croissant, in particular, was overly salty for my taste. While I appreciated the creative flavor combinations, the saltiness overshadowed the experience.
