I was looking forward to trying this place, but unfortunately my experience was disappointing. I visited with my two children and a friend, My son wanted a hamburger from the restaurant next door while the rest of us planned to order food from this restaurant and eat on their outdoor patio. Before ordering, an employee ( a young man with reading glasses and a beard) informed us that outside food was not allowed and that my son could not eat his hamburger there, even after I explained that the rest of our group intended to purchase meals from their restaurant. I understand that businesses have the right to enforce their policies, including rules about outside food. However, I was disappointed that there wasn't any flexibility for a young child when our group was still planning to become paying customers. Because of this, we decided to leave without ordering, mind you their patio was completely empty. I respect a business's right to set its own rules, but customer service and reasonable accommodations can make a big difference. Unfortunately, this experience left us feeling unwelcome, and we chose to spend our money elsewhere. read more

This place is a gluten-free girl's dream. EVERYTHING is gluten-free so you don't have to think twice about what to order. I got the Avo + Smoke, and it was generously portioned over crispy sourdough. The only weird quirk is they put paper under the sandwich, and it's impossible to use utensils to cut everything up cause the paper gets shredded into the food. So you gotta slip the paper out first. The espresso was some of the best I've had in the area. It tasted faintly of marzipan, giving it a rich sweetness without any actual sugar. There's a decent amount of outdoor seating, so it's nice to sit and enjoy a book while dining. However, I wish they served the drinks in to-stay cups. I was shocked when I learned that everything here is gluten free?! Pretty damn good sourdough, bagels, and pastries for all being gluten free. The open faced sandwiches are my favorite, with the spicy feta on sourdough being an elite order. The Nonna is another favorite, it's Italian-inspired with stracciatella cheese and pesto. I've gotten their bagels before at the BH location so I knew they had quality offerings so I was surprised to see the place so empty on a weds at 9am. Love this joint for gluten free bread and croissants! They have these big loaves of GF sourdough too which is just tasty and lasts for a good amount of time! Texture is just right too. It's nice to know there is a place like this nearby so I can get some buttery GF croissants too. As well as pain au chocolat ! What a treat. Finding parking in the area is not the best but once I get to the place it's fine. It's a little small but it's actually quite quaint. My fav place to hang/meet friends/remote work in Silver Lake. Great patio, friendly staff, and EVERYTHING is gluten-free. They also have lots of vegetarian and vegan options. The pastries, breads, and bagels are so good that you won't have a clue that they are gluten-free. Everything on their menu is so delicious. I love Modern Bread and Bagel, and I'm so glad there are more popping up around LA! (Also very dangerous because they're soooo good and the closer they are to me, the easier it is to eat there more frequently. ) Everything is great, and since it's fully gluten free, if you use Celiac, like me, you don't have to worry about cross contamination or anything. And all of their items taste like the gluten filled things! My favorite right now is the stuffed bagel and creme brulee donut (seasonal). Their regular items that I enjoy are everything bagels, olive loaf, croissants , quiche, breakfast burrito, latke tots, and linzer tarts when they have them. Everything on their hot menu is delicious. If you like sweet, specialty coffee drinks, those are good too. (Not my thing, but I've tried them and they're good if you're into that.) The staff at the Silverlake location is kind and helpful. It gets busy on weekends, but they get through the line pretty quickly. Modern Bread and Bagel just took over the Bravo Toast space (which used to be Breadblok). The bakery cafe is 100% gluten-free (but not vegan). I spotted cakes, donuts, croissants, cookies, cinnamon buns, bread loaves, and hand-rolled bagels. The menu includes bagel sandwiches and salads. I think they'll have more later. The coffee is roasted for them. It's dark roast. They have all your typical espresso drinks and other types of drinks. There's a cold case with drinks and yogurt parfaits. Order at the counter. Superseed vegan bagel with tofu cream cheese, add tomato, arugula & pickled onion ($5.95 + $3.25): Nicely wrapped in butcher paper and cut in half...the veggies were fresh. The bagel (toasted) had a slightly crispy exterior and was dense and chewy. It's not as chewy as a bagel with gluten, but I didn't miss the gluten. The problem was the tofu cream cheese. It was way too runny. I could see other people had runny cream cheese too. They should have already mastered the cream cheese (they have multiple locations) by now. The space looks quite nice (light woods, baskets) in a Scandinavian way. But they plan to remodel it. The covered outdoor patio is quite nice. read more

The latkes are the best! Glad there are so many options from bagels to sandwiches to pastries...etc. The bagels are not bad. My biggest complaint about this place is that many of the breads are made with oats. Even though oats are supposed to be gluten-free there is often cross contamination with wheat, barley and rye during farming. And even if oats are certified gluten free, some celiacs experience a negative reaction to avenin, the protein in oats. I was maybe selfishly just hoping I could get a baguette from here but alas it is made with oats. Regardless, glad this place exists! read more

Loved it! I tried the bagel with white fish and the pop tart -- both were good. Initially I was a little confused about the allergen labeling. There are some labels on individual food items that say gluten free, so I was questioning why it wasn't on every item and thought some were and some were not. I hope it catches on because its the best coffee place now in the Sunset Junction area. This was our first visit to the Silverlake Modern and unfortunately the service level was far lower than expected based on our experience at the other 3 CA locations. We asked the cashier about our takeout order after waiting 20 minutes, and were told they were "working on it." She then asked someone to check and they finally noticed our bagged order which we saw was sitting for at least 10 minutes. On top of that, our toasted bagel was burned. Hope the management here will work on training staff (at least those there on Sunday afternoons) to better match the customer service standard we've enjoyed at Modern's other locations. read more

I'd like to start by saying my friends and I are BIG modern bagel lovers, we normally go to the other 3 amazing locations in LA and have amazing experiences. My friend has severe celiac so it's rare we find fully gluten free restaurants to enjoy as a group. When we heard the silver lake location had opened and it was closest to us we were very excited. The food and drink quality always seems to come out a bit different or made wrong at this location and the biggest issue I've had so far.... The customer service. I'd like to emphasize that the younger woman with short curly hair, glasses and two rat tail braids is never friendly or accommodating. Whenever an item has to be sent bask because it was MADE WRONG she's never happy to help and makes it feel like an issue. This never feels good. Everyone else has little to no good customer service skills but compared to other locations it's a drastic difference. We made the choice today to just make the commute to the further locations permanently. I hope someone thing is enforced so that other customer can at least enjoy their experiences here. read more
