Just because it's the only option for food in Helper doesn't make it good food or service. I think it's just what people have as a choice for an open restaurant. Mid century solid oak tables on a well weathered wooden floor. Comfy chatty atmosphere with friendly, attentive service. Grilled cheddar on marble rye was good. Chicken sandwich, bacon, provolone on fresh sourdough roll was rated excellent when consumed. Huge mound of french fries were clearly just cut and made. My family was coming back to Salt Lake from Colorado and getting really hungry, so we stopped in this little town called Helper; or the real Land of the Lost, as I like to call it. Main street was pretty much abandoned except for a bank and this place. We stopped in, and we loved it! It's a spacious restaurant that used to be a dance hall whenever it was first opened, and there are probably 3 levels to it. we just sat on the bottom one, but it was cool. I just got a burger and fries, but the portions were huge and it was delicious. The atmosphere is pretty fun too and it was great exploring the place after eating. They have a hand-crank elevator, but I was too scared to go on since my parents refused to go with me. Overall I had a great time and if I ever end up in Helper again, I'd like to eat there. read more

Perhaps it is five star joint in the part of the country, but we found it to be rather lacking in comparison to what you would otherwise hope to eat elsewhere. It's a cool old building with great food and huge portions. I've stopped in a couple times for dinner when passing through town. I've only tried the German dip, its like french dip but with a lot of grilled onions and provolone cheese (doesn't really sound very German to me either) It's good though. Last week I finally had the chance to have breakfast, the lady offered toast or a pancake with my order, so I went with the pancake. It came out looking like the pancake from the movie "Uncle Buck" it was easily 12" across by 1/2" thick. In the movie uncle buck had to flip it with a snow shovel, they probably do here too, no spatula is that big. Anyway I ordered the Gomer Pile: Sausage, peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheese, & two eggs atop a pile of potatoes. Unfortunately the live music wasn't playing from the balcony like it was the night before. However, the menu had plenty of choices, the staff was friendly, and the food was good. Breakfast is served all day and so I opted for the "Helper Special". The "Helper Special" consisted of 3 scrambled eggs, onions, cheese, and Kielbasa. It came with a side of crispy hash browns and my choice of toast, pancakes, and scones. After seeing the ginormous pancake, I was feeling some regret that I had opted for the scone. That is until I buttered the scone up, smothered it with honey and took the first bite. It was the best part of the meal. I've eaten here numerous times and will continue to go back. Great little diner in Helper, UT. Clean restaurant with great diner food. The turkey Anasazi melt was yummy- the English fries were too greasy for me- think of fish n chips with it being similar to the fish. Mom had the Ruben melt with homemade chicken noodle soup & the hubs had the Spanish omelette with rye toast, all very good. My girlfriend and I went to this restaurant and enjoyed the scenery. The food was alright, however after we went home and went to bed without eating anything else i was unable to sleep due to nausea and an upset stomach. Around 5 o'clock my girlfriend was vomiting and having diarrhea, with me having diarrhea not too long after her. We are both feeling ill today and haven't had anything since eating at this pub last night. For more clarification of what we had, we both had the new York steaks with mashed potatoes, with me getting the soup of the day and her getting a salad. Our steaks were cooked medium rare, however they tasted a bit off. And to top it off we had the scone with our meal, but they tasted doughy. read more

Our waitress Ruth was honestly the best of all. She's so kind and on top of absolutely everything! She always had a big smile and was so bubbly the entire time. She checked on us in a timely manner. In general I like Balance Rock Eatery however today's gripe is due to what I consider a blatant money grubbing tactic. If you consider this; your meal comes with either Rock Chips(their version of something akin to kettle chips), or French Fries and you can substitute either for a "dinner salad" for $1.50. Herein lies the problem if you get the fries or chips and ask for a salad. You pay $4.25 for a salad which was so damn small it shouldn't be a $1.50. I gotta say, it was sticker shock and when I brought it up when paying the ticket the waitress, coldly said "That's why we list it beforehand on the menu." Clearly she failed to grasp how misleading this is and she also clearly failed to mention the added cost in comparison to the original substituted cost. That burns me up, it's clearly a nasty tactic and I hope people take note before and don't get screwed over for ordering their "dinner salad" which was more like 3 bites. read more
