Where there's a beach, there will be a candy store. I was out exploring the area and had a feeling I would run into one; lo and behold after a short while I found myself staring at Balboa Candy. Since I like partaking in sweets while traveling, I decided to go in and check this place out. BC is a decent size for a candy shop; the merch is scattered throughout the floor and they stock a mix of loose generic candy you can buy in bags or bulk, and branded confections. The focal point is the center counter that houses chocolates and a few other selections. The stock was a little sparse if I'm being honest; I'm used to really showy candy shops along the shore with a vast variety of merchandise, but I didn't find that here. I decided to pick up some Australian licorice and some of their jumbo peanut butter cups. I'm familiar with the brand of licorice, but as far as the chocolate it was quite good - the cup was stuffed generously with peanut butter. It was also very smooth which gave it a good mouthfeel. Service was friendly, but overall I didn't think Balboa Candy was anything too noteworthy. Good as a standard candy store, but I've been to better ones. read more

The second I walked in I felt like a kid again and had the rush of excitement to pick any candy I wanted. There's nothing quite like the smell of a candy shop. I brought my kids and they had just as much fun picking out treats as I did. My son is a big chocolate lover and they even had an entire section for him. Our favorite - chocolate dipped s'mores! Cute candy store located in Balboa. Plenty of different flavors of salt water taffy for sale. I bought about two pounds worth of taffy because I love them so much. I've been coming to this store many times and their taffy is always fresh and soft. Staff at this location is super friendly. They allowed one free sample per customer. I tried the chicken and waffle salt water taffy and it was quite interesting. Mostly maple syrup flavor. My favorite are their elderflower and passion fruit flavor. Superb. Lots & lots of candy! Taffy of all different flavors--even pumpkin pie! To be honest, though, I'm not a big candy fan so I wasn't feeling the excitement. It's a cute store though & we humbly & wholeheartedly thank the people that gave us gift certificates for Christmas to spend here. We bought a variety of taffy & fudge. All pretty good. Hard to find a mom and pop store nowadays with such a large selection of current and nostalgic type of candies! This is heaven for candy lovers and a cool store to visit when touring the area. The lady that helped us was super sweet and very helpful! I love pop rocks and all types of sour candy and my son loves Knick knack types of candy that are part toy and part candy. Popped in here whilst having a stroll along Main Street. Balboa Candy is super cute from the outside - reminds me very much of an old, small town candy store. Upon going inside, it has the same look and feel as the exterior - the candy is bagged up and stored in wooden barrels. They also have a selection of barred chocolates and such at the back of the store. Really lovely store and I would love to rate it higher but the prices! I got two little tiny things of candy and they cost over $4. I could have gotten the exact same stuff from Sweet Factory for probably $2.50 or so. Ambiance isn't worth the over-priced goods. read more

Insanely Delicious. The tubs of taffy caught my eye so much day before so I drove to the island specifically to try some Salt water taffy. Delicious. I tossed a few of interesting flavors like cantaloupe, malted milk chocolate, cantaloupe and chicken n waffles and ALL were amazing. A sweet treat. I work on the same street and live a couple blocks away. I never go in and my boyfriend and I decided at 7pm which it has 9 pm is the closing time. We rode our bikes to get something sweet. The blonde young girl that work tonight was very rude and as we walked out she slammed the door and started mouthing not nice words that were some cursing words. I will not be going back if she is there. Very disrespectful! On top of it while we were getting some candy which was not a lot she was tapping her fingernails against the counter like we were taking our time which we weren't. They also supply you with a little half-barrell shaped basket for shopping purposes. It's a real treat to shop for their treats! What more can you ask for from a candy shop? My family and I have made a tradition of coming down and spending the day next to the Balboa Pier. We ventured away from the pier and decided to take a walk down Main St. The first thing you notice when you walk into the store is the smell of sugar! It's great. They had a really good selection of candy, but sadly no Violet Crumble :( I bought a couple of pieces of taffy and a bag of jawbreakers and the total came out to about ~$3 not bad, the bags were pretty generous. Originally my son, boyfriend and I came to the ferry the other night and we have never walked the small strip that was near there in which this candy shop was located. I love old fashioned candy places, so seeing this place and having my 2year old son with me, I knew he'd enjoy walking in and getting something. I was unaware that the store was almost closing because there was another customer inside buying candy so my family and I walked in, and we didn't even get greeted...
