Overall, I think this place deserves a 3 1/2 and could possibly upgrade to a four but maybe we just didn't have the best experience today. The place is clean and looks good. The meats are very high-quality. The menu is good and there's a good amount of variety. I thought the service was pretty slow even though it wasn't that busy. We tried the rotisserie chicken Caesar wrap. It was way too saucy. Could cut the sauce down by like 50% and it would probably be a five out of five. It just overwhelmed the wrap. The Smashburger was a 4 to 4 1/2 out of 5. I think this is definitely worth it.
Brought my friends to Mario's because I was raving about their steak sandwich after the first time I had it. It truly is the best steak sandwich I have ever had. The steak is so buttery and melt in your mouth. Simply put together in their bread with lettuce + tomatoes makes for a simple but delicious bite.

Really?Good flavorful fish with a crispy light batter. They also have malt vinegar available. The fries are absolutely amazing.And some of the best fries i've had. I came back in with the girls.And we ordered the smash burgers. Very simple but amazingly flavorful burgers. That's the quality of the meat.With all the flavor. Super soft fresh buns to boot. Parking is easy there's a lot. Customer service is great. The shop is small on the inside and limited limited seating, but has several tables outside the shop. I'm really liking this place and look forward to my next visit.
Saturday early lunch, inside is a butcher shop that does sandwiches. Menu ranges from classic deli to burgers. Ordered the spicy Italian and steak sandwich. spicy Italy was in nice fresh bread, with quality salami. Only issues was the bite was very hard dude to the stacking of the meat. Steak sandwich was tender with a nice chimichurri sauce to bring it all together Overall a great sandwich with excellent service, would recommend.
Mario's is a butcher shop that also make amazing sandwiches. We recently ordered the Steak sandwich and it was stacked!! The ratio to bread and veggies were perfect and chimichurri sauce was a nice touch. I've also had their smash burgers which also equally good. They use mustard and ketchup vs the traditional smash sauce which is a nice change up. The fries are always hot and crispy for the perfect combo with your sandwich. They have a patio seating to enjoy your meal in all its glory. The service is pretty quick and easy, the only area to be aware of is the parking lot can get a bit packed. Not their fault but just something to be aware of. If you're looking for an elevated sandwich that showcases their great meat selection highly recommend giving Mario's a try.
Mario's Butcher shop is located near John Wayne Airport on the border of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. It's one of my favorite spots for lunch. Their steak sandwich and their fries are my favorite things to get here. The steak is cooked to your preferred doneness, perfectly seasoned, and topped with an addictively tangy chimichurri. The fries are perfectly seasoned, thick cut fries that get depth from the beefy tallow that they're fried in. When I talk about steak sandwiches, I really mean that it's legit steak. Just look at the gaucho grill in the kitchen that is cranked up/down for optimal heat control. I mention this because they don't cut corners here. Also keep an eye out for their specials, which they announce daily on their IG page. I visited them Saturday on their five-year anniversary and they brought in a guest chef from Argentina, who made amazing Picanha. I got a special where they sliced the picanha over pao de quejo (brazilian cheese bread). It was one of the best bites I've had in a long time. Given that this dish was prepared from a guest chef, it won't be back on the menu anytime soon; however, their regular specials include porchetta on tuesdays and rib sandwiches on Saturdays. I really want to come by for their rotisserie chicken and roasted potatoes; however, I haven't been able to make that happen yet. It's no surprise that it's on the annual list from the LA Times as one of the top 101 restaurants in SoCal! Just don't pass up that steak sandwich and fries.
Mario's Butcher Shop offers great sandwiches and they do a lot of business. People stream into this shop steadily. I ordered the Wagyu Tri Tip sandwich special and my order was nearly the last available that Friday. I also ordered their Paradise Iced Tea, which was good, but not spectacular at a paradise level in my opinion. The tri tip sandwich could have been executed in all the right ways, but the Serrano chilis were overdone and took over the sandwich. The balance was thrown off. The Serrano masked the overly chunky tri tip and my palate. If the Serrano chilis were diminished by a half or even two thirds, this would be a far better sandwich. The quality of the sesame seeded hero bus was great and I could taste it, but overshadowed by the Serranos.I could tell the cheese sauce was also well thought out and executed on its own, but again the chilis masked all that goodness. The same goes for the chunky sauteed onions, whose sweetness could have offered a nice counterpoint to the tri tip and chilis, but was overwhelmed by the chilis. This also applied to the tri tip, whose Wagyu flavor should have been at the center of this sandwich, but was pushed aside by the Serranos. You're onto a good thing with this Tri Tip and I was looking forward to enjoying it, given we don't commonly see the tri tip cut on the East Coast. When you run this special again, back off the Serranos by a considerable amount and chop the tri tip a bit more finely so one can eat it without having to eat oversized chunks. The quality is there, but the balance and execution were off. 3.4 stars
Every single item we ate was delicious and flavorful. Put this on your list to visit! -The Uncle Beef Cheeseburger (only available on Thursdays) was a better tasting Big Mac. You know it's a popular item as they were pumping them out of the kitchen for the to-go orders. -Steak Sandwich was delicious. A must order! -Threw a curve ball and tried the Fish Sandwich. It was nostalgic for me as it reminded me of McD's Filet-O-Fish but so much better. Full of flavor, crunchy, and not oily. -Tallow fries are a must to add-on. Cooked to order and lightly salted. One of the best fries I've had in a while. Arrived at 11am for lunch and the parking lot was filling up fast. It's a very popular spot and rightfully so! Looking forward to trying more items at Mario's!!!
My best friend took me here and honestly I felt a little confused ordering a burger from here because i dont know butcher shop gives off sandwich vibes but omg im so glad I got the smash burger The smash burger was perfect to say the least so juicy yet crispy i kept seeing them come out of the kitchen while we sat and ate it's definitely a favorite at Mario's The seating inside and out is plentiful and really clean we chose to sit outside. The food came out super quick which was perfect we were starving Service here was really friendly and sweet I had a phenomenal time here this is easy going into the rotation of spots to eat at in Newport
Best fish sandwich in the game. Also don't sleep on the burgers or the side pastas or anything really. Low key bring home the chimichurri sauce and throw on some steak or chicken and your family will think your a gourmet chef, it's that easy. The service is always top notch and the long lines do go quickly, however parking does suck so I suggest go early.
Awesome place in Newport Beach. Fresh sandwiches and butcher shop. Can't wait to buy some steaks here and having it grilled by the owner Mario!! Just go!!
I gotta meet this Mario because I absolutely loved the Steak sandwich here! It was so good I didn't even take a picture of it haha. It came on a toasted hoagie a with lettuce, tomato, mayo and chimichurri on the side. The meat was a little chewy because it was rare but was really good quality and tasted different from other steak sandwiches. You can tell everything is made to order because we waited quite a bit of time for our food. Enjoyed the tallow fries on the side too! We came in the afternoon after I got back from the airport an it was really busy and the seating outside was very limited. I was very eager to try their smashburger but would get this next time because everyone was ordering it! Highly recommend!
Mario's has been a bucket-list location for me to visit for a while now. I came on a friday evening during mother's day weekend before they closed. I had to try a few of their items. The Hype is real Folks! Inside: plenty of tables. Music playing, great home vibe. Big screen tv playing a baseball game. Outside: tables with umbrellas. What i ordered: Steak sandwich: Steak Sandwich : Medium well, No Chimichuri sauce ,Add Provolone,lettuce, tomato,mayo,on a roll. Add Grilled Onions 2. Smash Burger add bacon, add grilled onions. SMASH BURGER: 4oz. patty, mayo, mustard, ketchup, American cheese, onions, pickles. $8.00 3. Talo French fries: they are thick and heavenly! $4.5 Total: $34.00 Buck-list check, and i will be back! Mario himself is such a gem! So kind, so hospitable and welcoming. Im bringing my parents here. What i love is that there is a variety of home Made pasta, sides, and amazing quality of meats. Absolutely amazing butcher shop! My wife stopped by Mario's Butchers and picked up some beautiful ribeye steaks for us, and I was seriously impressed with the quality. The marbling was excellent, the meat was incredibly fresh, and they turned out to be some of the best steaks I've cooked at home. My wife also had a great experience with the service. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, which made the whole experience even better. You can definitely tell Mario's takes pride in the quality of their meat. If you appreciate a great steak and want something noticeably better than what you typically find at a grocery store, this is the place to go. We'll absolutely be coming back. I have lived from San Diego to Los Angeles, and I have never had a pastrami on rye sandwich like this one! The pastrami was pure perfection, the greens fresh and crispy, the pickles big and chunky, and the rye was fresher than fresh. There was just enough moisture that the sandwich was easy to eat without falling apart. The fries were cooked to perfection. There is an assortment of sauces, but I opted for no sauce today. This was also my first Boylan Root Beer, and WOW--it took me right back to childhood and root beer floats. If you're old enough, then you KNOW what real root beer tastes like! I came for lunch the first time, and the place was packed, with seating filling up fast. This time I came for an early dinner: no line, no rush, and lots of places to sit! They close at 6 PM, so if you want an early dinner without the rush, make sure you come to Mario's Butcher Shop!!! You will NOT be disappointed!!! read more

The fries were good and the fresh was well battered. Dare I say a tad too expensive for what you're getting? It's nice. Service was okay as they are mainly a butcher shop? I'd go back to try other sandwiches but it's def a "splurge" for a sandwich. read more

Another review for Mario's Butcher Shop. Was the food good? How was the service? Blah, blah, blah... Does it really matter? All we really want to know is this: Was it good enough, and would you come back? For me, the answer is a big YES! Parking was a little scarce, and the line was out the door, but don't let that fool you. The service was quick, friendly, and efficient. Better yet, the food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the burger, and my wife had the chicken salad sandwich. Both were fantastic, and we'll definitely be back for more! read more
A solid lunch spot at Newport! This place is bustling no matter the time and day and parking can be hard to find so make sure you allot time for that. I usually order their steak sandwich but this time I decided to try their rotisserie chicken caesar salad wrap and it did not disappoint! Each bite was packed with protein and it had the perfect amount of dressing coating every ingredient without overdrenching it. It comes with garlic croutons, crispy romaine lettuce, some sort of shaved cheese, and peperocino peppers. Their ratio of protein to lettuce was perfect and I liked that the wrap stayed intact after each bite. The peppers were unique and added a nice tang. The only thing I would change is for them to add more croutons, I only had a few bites with it. Can't wait to come back to try more of their items! read more

Had lunch here today with my family for the first time. Since it was around lunch time the parking lot was crowded as well as Mario's. The wait wasn't bad even though there was a line to order. I had the chicken salad sandwich which I loved. It's served on rye bread. Fries, iced tea, smash burger, patty melt, and fried chicken sandwich were all good. The employees were friendly. Seating is definitely tough. We were patient and found a table before our food came out. I'll definitely be back! read more

Mario's is not only a great butcher shop but an awesome spot to grab lunch. This shop is clean, everything is organized well and although it doesn't have a huge selection, everything is the highest quality. That sentiment extends to their menu, haven't had a bad bite out of this place. I can honestly say they have the best pastrami sandwich I have ever had. Super tender meat with a great smokey quality to it. Everything is fresh and nothing is just thrown together, they take their time with the details. The staff are friendly and really helpful selecting the right cuts when you're at the meat counter. I also found out that you get a discount if you wear one of their shirts while I was buying mine today, definitely going to be wearing that shirt a lot. I just wish that parking lot was twice as big because Mario's isn't the only great shop in this center. read more

Smash burger 5/5. Sooo good. I can see myself craving this burger, decent portion for the price ($12), not heavy or overly oily Fries 5/5 - crispy, great flavor Newport Burrito was 2/5 - came with eggs, avocados, no wow factor, lacked flavor Chipotle sauce (came with the burrito) 5/5. This sauce carried the burrito. Appreciate the generous portion! Chill ambiance. I would come back to try their other items! read more
I really liked this place. This was our first stop for my Husband's birthday weekend. Mario's Butcher Shop is located in a plaza not too far from the freeway. There are plenty of parking. You order at the counter and find a table. We arrived around 10 AM on a Saturday and we just came before the rush. It does take a while to get our food, but it was worth it. I suggest calling in or ordered online, if you are in a rush. We spent our time looking at all the cuts of meats and all the other interesting things they sold. We ordered the breakfast burrito with bacon, pastrami sandwich, smash burger, and French fries. I really liked the breakfast burrito. The burrito came in a two-snack size burrito. The eggs were nice and creamy. The burrito with the chipotle sauce made it even better. I also enjoy the smash burger. Great bun and seasoning. That burger was great. French fries were fresh and tasty. The pastrami sandwich was okay. The pastrami was more on the thinner cut. I think I prefer the thick cut pastrami. Overall, great place for breakfast or lunch! read more

First visit. I did not disappoint! Wow! Service was fantastic & greeted with smiles. It was cleaned & well layout from butcher area, inside counter bar seating, & counter to order for food. Great touch having a water station away from order counter. I've owned & operated restaurants my career. Love our sandwich selections today and will be returning again soon. read more
I heard about the "Uncle Beef" burger that Mario's serves only on Thursdays, so I had to stop by today and give it a shot. I couldn't be more happy that I did. The shop has expanded quite a bit since I last visited, which was great to see. Service is still great, especially for how busy it got during lunch. While there was a line, it did move quick, but you do have to wait a bit for your food. That being said, the burger was absolutely worth the wait. The Uncle Beef is Mario's version of a Big Mac, and it has completely ruined McDonalds for me. Everything was fresh and the beef was so flavorful, plus the sesame seed bun was excellent. I also appreciate that they've managed to make a replica of McDonald's BBQ sauce, so definitely grab some if you're a fan of that sauce. I think this burger is superior to their standard smash burger, and highly recommend paying them a visit on Thursday to give it a try. You'll have to wait a bit, but it is absolutely worth it! read more
First timer! Early weekday lunch and found parking right away. It wasn't busy yet so we found a patio table easily too. It does take a bit of time for the food but everything's made fresh and they bring it out to you. I can see why this place is so popular - everything was delicious! It was flavorful and not too salty. The Uncle Beef cheeseburger (served Thursdays only) was the highlight. Totally gives off Big Mac vibes but better! Can't wait to try other items off their menu. For a butcher shop, they have a great variety of cuts and cooked items. Menu is straight forward and service is fantastic from front of house to back. Got to try a double smash burger, with bacon, and a side order of fries. The fries were terrific! The burger was delicious! The bacon added a great crunch to the burger. The burger itself has some weight, in a good way. It's not one of those medium-ish size smash burger because, this one took me a bit to finish and, I was just enjoying how juicy it was. It's not your typical smash burger you'd expect, just a good different. They have a fridge of different drinks and meat cuts as well. Can't wait to come back and try their other items. read more

Move over Mr. J.Mike's, THIS is the shop to go to for a good sandwich. You get every ounce of meat you pay for, and it's all top notch. The workers are so friendly, always made sure everyones order was perfect. You cant order anything custom, but you can ask for stuff like "no mayo" or "add extra mustard" and stuff like that, so dont worry too much if youre picky. We each got the italian sub and really wanted to try the tallow fries to see what the fuss was about around tallow. Let me tell you - BEST FRIES EVER. They are warm, fluffy, and have a super unique aroma that just MMMM. Delish. The sandwich was cold, which hit so hard on a hot Saturday at lunch. The bread was like a good bagel, chewy with a great crust and blistering. I actually cannot wait to come back and try more. The steak sandwich has my name on it! read more

Mario's Butcher Shop & Deli is home to my favorite sandwich in Orange County. My go to is the Argentinian choripán, which is absolutely incredible and something I crave regularly. I have also had the chicken cutlet and the meatball parm, and both were excellent. Everything tastes fresh, the ingredients are high quality, and it is the kind of place that consistently delivers every time you visit. If you are a sandwich person, this is a must stop in Newport Beach. read more
To be honest, I was underwhelmed. This place was really hyped up, so I was expecting an LA-level good sandwich, but this wasn't quite there. The quality of the ingredients was good, but I felt like, overall, it just lacked flavor where there was much more potential. The Italian sub was very dry because it used a lot of dry meats, which is just not my preference. I wanted more from the steak sandwich, but it was a bit plain for my liking. I would have enjoyed a stronger beef and chimichurri flavor. The chili fries, however, were extremely good. No complaints there. Fries are fried in tallow. I was depressed and my husband suggested getting a breakfast burrito to cheer me up. As fate would have it, someone had just told me that Mario's had one of the best breakfast burritos in OC. I placed my order online and then drove over. I have been wanting to try Mario's forever, but was didn't want to go during lunchtime when the place gets slammed and parking is an issue. At 9am, it's very quiet and you can park easily. They still seemed to be setting up inside, and I don't think they actually started cooking the burrito until we arrived. It gave me time to explore the store and buy some smoked salmon candy. Instead of being one burrito, the California burrito ($13) wound up being two smaller burritos, about the size of my hand (I have small hands). You can choose bacon, chorizo, sausage or pastrami as your protein (I chose chorizo). It comes with egg, cheese, avocado, hash browns, serrano peppers and a side of chipotle cream. I liked how everything was mixed together, so you get all the ingredients in every bite. It's pretty light on the hash browns too, which prevents you from feeling as bloated. Since I only ate one, I had enough room for lunch (which may not have happened if I ate both of them). Overall, a very solid breakfast burrito. There was an LA Times article on Dec 1 about Mario's titled "The best steak sandwich is at this butcher shop in Orange County". The place was super busy on Saturday, I guess other people read the article too. My husband ordered the Steak sandwich ($17) and I ordered the Turkey Club ($18). We also ordered the Beef Tallow Fries ($4.50). There is not much seating on the patio and unfortunately some customers were saving seats when they hadn't even ordered yet. Also there were a few large groups who were stealing chairs from other tables. But eventually we got a table and were able to sit and enjoy our sandwiches. My husband loved the steak sandwich. We had recently gone to an expensive steak house and he said this steak rivaled what he'd had there. My turkey club was great - plenty of turkey, avocado, bacon, lettuce. The roll was a the kind my husband loves, a little bit on the crusty side for my taste but very flavorful. I guess I'm kind of a dutch crunch or soft roll person. The tallow fries were absolutely delicious! Wow, it's been a while since we've had luscious saturated fat. We will definitely return for the pastrami, bologna sandwich and the smashburger. read more

This is one of those diamonds in the rough. Although its not very rough as the small plaza in which this spot is located, has alot of appeal in their offerings. But I digress... one of the best smash burgers in Orange County...and even perhaps Southern California. Everything about how fresh this burger is, is why you keep coming back. You pair that with the fresh, crispy, and hot fries, and this is a combo that will make you want to come back for more. Oh, and this is a butcher and a Deli! Prices are on par for their offerings, so don't go looking for Kroger deals in a spot that offers amazing cuts. Service was great, even during a rush. We almost felt like we've been regulars for a long time! I cannot wait to try their other sandwiches. The Steak sandwich looked AMAZING. Their Italian looked AMAZING. No Sodas on tap. Purchase singles from the fridge or drink from their water dispenser WHICH ALWAYS HAS ICE. AMAZING. read more
