No Royce chocolate in San Diego, so stop by since I was in the area ! My first time having Royce chocolate was in Vegas so I definitely had to pick up some ! Unfortunately they were low stock and late shipment for their Nama chocolates. There was only the matcha and champagne flavor. Decided to go with the matcha flavor. It was super good. This location also carries mochi!

Since I like partaking in sweets while traveling, I decided to go in and check this place out. BC is a decent size for a candy shop; the merch is scattered throughout the floor and they stock a mix of loose generic candy you can buy in bags or bulk, and branded confections. The focal point is the center counter that houses chocolates and a few other selections. The stock was a little sparse if I'm being honest; I'm used to really showy candy shops along the shore with a vast variety of merchandise, but I didn't find that here. I decided to pick up some Australian licorice and some of their jumbo peanut butter cups. I'm familiar with the brand of licorice, but as far as the chocolate it was quite good - the cup was stuffed generously with peanut butter. It was also very smooth which gave it a good mouthfeel. Service was friendly, but overall I didn't think Balboa Candy was anything too noteworthy. Good as a standard candy store, but I've been to better ones.

The location is beautiful and super easy to find! I had no hidden corners, just a bright, open, and inviting storefront. The shop itself is so nicely decorated, everything feels thoughtfully put together and fun to explore. I came specifically for their Sunday pop-up featuring the Hannah Montana exhibit, and it completely exceeded my expectations. Such a cute and nostalgic experience! On top of that, the service was great (they took as many photos as you wanted for you) everyone was friendly and helpful without being overwhelming. One of my favorite parts is the customizable, limited merch--it makes the whole visit feel even more special and unique. Merch was high value and nice quality so you get what you are paying for. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to! Thank you.

They were handing out samples of their hazelnut chocolate bars, and after one bite, I knew I had to step inside to look around and try some more. Such luxuriously rich and smooth chocolate morsels that melt so exquisitely in your mouth (where you can taste and smell the layers of quality ingredients contained in each piece). Really took me back to my last trip to Switzerland when I overindulged in chocolates and fondue (and it was so very worth it). Pricing is by the pound if you get items a la carte. Truffles and pralines are $84 per lb (works out to be average of $3 per piece) and their chocolate bark bars (aka FrischSchoggi) are about $60 to $64 per lb. Otherwise there are prepackaged boxes at set prices ranging from about $20 to $150 and more. Today I sampled the hazelnut chocolate bar, pava praline square, a white chocolate espresso truffle, and a champagne truffle. I ultimately decided to purchase the pava praline set (comes with 8 pieces) and 5 pieces of the white chocolate expresso truffles. Total was just under $40. Truffles came in nicely designed, minimalistic boxes. They are located on the second floor of the Bloomingdale's wing of South Coast Plaza, above Sephora.

Got greeted immediately, offered samples and products explained...and bought a bunch of chocolates. This Monday morning at 10:30am, only one other customer in the store who was being helped. No one greeted us when we walked in. The gentlemen behind chocolate counter just stared at us as we browsed the products. After a couple of minutes of complete silence and being ignored, we walked out without buying anything even though we specifically came in looking to buy gifts. If you are going to sell expensive chocolate, maybe it's worth investing in better customer service.

I have been a customer of this shop for many years and have spent hundreds of dollars here over…read moretime, which is why this experience was particularly disappointing. During my most recent visit, I was browsing and deciding whether I wanted to purchase another cake. I asked my partner to take a look at a coffee walnut cake I was considering. While I was looking at the display, a staff member suddenly approached me and loudly asked, "What can I help you with?" The tone and volume startled me. Her expression was very serious, and it gave me the impression that she was suspicious of me rather than trying to assist me. I had originally intended to ask about the ingredients and details of the cake, but because I was caught off guard, I simply asked her to get the cake for me instead. Looking back, I don't think I reacted the way I normally would because the interaction was so unexpected and uncomfortable. The situation became even more unpleasant afterward. The employee seemed to be in a great hurry and repeatedly asked, "What else do you want?" in a rushed and impatient manner. It felt as though she wanted us to make our purchases as quickly as possible and leave. Rather than receiving customer service, I felt pressured into buying something immediately. What made this particularly strange was that I was the only customer in the store at the time. Many people were looking around and leaving, while I was one of the few customers actively making purchases. Yet I felt as though I was being treated with suspicion while simply browsing with a tray in my hand. This type of hard-sell behavior is something I would expect in a crowded tourist area, not in a neighborhood shop where customers should feel welcome to browse and make thoughtful purchasing decisions. The experience left me feeling rushed and uncomfortable. I was disappointed by the products themselves. After returning home, I realized that many of the items I purchased were set to expire within approximately two weeks. I had bought a substantial amount of pastries, and it was unrealistic to expect someone to finish everything in such a short period. I also noticed that the quality of several items has declined compared to previous years. Some pastries were overly sweet, while others tasted dry. Although the shop still maintains beautiful packaging, the quality no longer matches the presentation. Prices have also increased significantly. Items that once cost around $3 are now closer to $5 to $7, with some reaching nearly $10 for a small single item. At those prices, customers should be allowed the time to browse, compare products, and make informed decisions without feeling pressured. I understand that staff may not recognize every customer, even after many years, and that is perfectly understandable. However, customers should still be treated with courtesy and respect. Browsing the store while carrying grocery bags should not result in someone feeling suspected, rushed, or treated like a potential thief rather than a valued customer. Not everyone who walks into your store is a thief. Many of us are loyal customers who simply want to browse and shop comfortably. If customers are made to feel rushed, suspected, or unwelcome, they will eventually take their business elsewhere.
