First and last visit. Was visiting the area for business, staying at the Crowne Plaza. They recommended Baleen as it was walking waking distance of the hotel. Decided to sit in the bar and watch the Cubs/Giants game. Sat at a table in the bar. 3 customers at the bar and no one else at the tables. 10 minutes went by with the waitress waking by at least 3 times without stopping. The bartender was looking at his cell phone and delivered 1 glass of wine to one of the customers at the bat during that time. After 10 minutes, I got up and left. This place is a joke that bills itself as a classy restaurant. Don't waste your time. read more

Nice view, nice waiter (Alex), spacey hostess, but overall good service. Ambiance is just right for a lovely dinner out, but clientele can be dressed a bit too casual for the room. I hate to be a nay sayer among those who love this place but I went with a group and we were VERY disappointed. While the location can't be beat the food was mediocre, over priced, the service poor and it took several tries to get the check right. We had advance reservations so there was no excuse for not having sufficient staff to serve us. My salad was tasteless and over dressed with a bland dressing. One woman who ordered the same thing sent it back. I should have. Perhaps dinners are better but I for one won't be returning to find out. read more

Myself and a few friends went here to meet up for drinks and appetizers in there Bar/Lounge. Nice ambiance, but no more live entertainment, we all like a variety of good music, but they played such low boring sleepy music, you can barely take it. My friends agreed that the food and drink is way over overpriced, unless you maybe catch it on Happy Hr. The manager there that night, Matt or Matthew could care less, and just came off as very snobby and stuck up, and he said they will not pay for live entertainment any more, not even a DJ. The waitress was still very nice and helpful. We paid our tab , and left for a more lively spot. Will not be going back there again! read more

Do not go here if you want decent service. Made a reservation for 6 + baby (specified that we needed a high chair) for this past father's day. When we got there, they had no record of our reservation (& the awesome thing is that this happened to us before) so we had to wait for about 20 minutes to get a table. All the while, the host staff was not apologetic at all. Once we did get a table, we asked for a high chair which they proceeded to "look for" for around 30 minutes & then never brought out. It took about 45 minutes to get our food (which, I admit, was tasty) from a waiter who was rude & incompetent. read more

When I got their they insisted their price was always $54/person. The buffet was okay for $30/person but not worth the $54/person. Since it was Thanksgiving it was hard to change plans so I paid the ridiculous fee. read more

This is a hidden gem. If you like atmosphere, this is the place. It overlooks the boats in the marina and they have live music (an entertaining duo who do covers, but do it well!). The food on the happy hour menu is pretty good- I'd go for the Caesar salad or the nachos. The nachos look interesting, but don't be deceived, they are oddly addicting! The food isn't always knocking it out of the park, and the beer selection for happy hour could use a little improvement, but this place is special- it's got great atmosphere, it's not pretentious, and they have down-to-Earth servers who treat you well. We usually come for happy hour, but went there for brunch the other day. Bloody Mary bar (where you could basically build a meal in your drink) sold me! And their eggs benedict was up there with the best! There's parking, and a valet if you need. I'm almost afraid to post this, because word will get out! read more

We came here for brunch and were pretty disappointed. Although the atmosphere is great, the service was a bit slow. The fried eggs were very overcooked and they brought out the side potatoes 20 minutes before the eggs. Overall the menu seemed promising but the staff and experience was very unorganized. read more

My husband, & I went here for Thanksgiving along with a good friend. I was very disappointed in the menu, as they changed it from what they put on their website. I was looking forward to the Black Beab Soup, but it wasn't on the menu when we got there. Also, the dessert was entirely different from their website. They served a pumpkin creme brulee, and a German Chocolate Cake....I mean, who has Germa Chocolate cake on Thanksgiving???? What happened to the wonderful Pecan Cheesecake and Pumpkin Pie that was on the website menu???? I've been out to many Thanksgiving dinners, and NEVER saw a drastic change in the menue. The salad choices & the entree also had changes. I find this so unprofessional & unacceptable. Our dinner wasn't hot, and barely warm. My husband tried to put butter on his mashed potatoes & it didn't even melt....also, we felt very rushed and were never asked if we wanted coffee at the end of dinner!!!!! This place is,probably, the nicest most beautiful scenery & setting in the South Bay. This should be a 1st class restaurant, but Thanksgiving dinner was a big disappointment. They really need to get their act together if they want people to come back. I gave it 2 stars because of the location & ambiance. read more

We had a wonderful date night here at baleen kitchen. Service was incredible - our server Alex C made sure we were really well taken care of. We stuck to just the tapas and appetizer menu - Alex advised us on the favorite dishes and how much we should order. We dined outdoors and the setting was beautiful. Great find! We went on a Saturday night and it wasn't crowded, our server was fun, and the food was outstanding. Started off with the Calamari, which was cooked to perfection. Then we got the Andrew Jackson burger: a cheeseburger with BBQ sauce, bacon, short rib, and shoestring fried onions. This is easily one of the top 10 burgers I've had in my life! Finished off with the bread pudding and Irish coffee. They don't hold back on the whiskey so go for it if you're not driving. Let the ice cream on the bread pudding melt into it a bit before diving in. Great flavors all around. Good for anniversaries or an upscale family dinner. Also, they had a very comfortable looking lounge area near the bar. We didn't get a chance to explore to much of that side of the restaurant, but with a good drink and a good view I'm sure it's a quality bar experience. My lady and I will definitely be coming back...probably sooner than later. read more

I organized a private party for about 25 people on the covered, outdoor patio area downstairs. Sean, the manager, was very responsive and I was able to customize everything -- choosing the exact drinks served without limits, selecting hors d'oeuvres, etc. As I live out of town, I did not personally see the space until I arrived for the party, but it was impressive: great view of the boats in the marina, the Wyland mural, a seamless indoor-outdoor feel to the space. Everything was set up properly. The bartender, Alex, was friendly and did a good job serving drinks and helping out with the passed appetizers. Each and every appetizer was excellent; even one I expected to be boring -- bruschetta -- had vibrant flavors and was aesthetically well composed. (The ahi tuna and duck carnitas ones were my favorites.) As the host, I didn't need to do anything regarding setup or breaking down, so I was able to enjoy the party. Overall, the restaurant seemed incredibly well-organized and strong on execution, and they boast a great physical location. I would definitely recommend it for private events. (I also had a beer upstairs before the party. Good local draft selection, nice space, friendly bartender Justin.) read more

This was the only dining option for us after the church wedding we attended. Since we were at the Portofino Hotel across the street we decided to grab a quick bite here since we were starving, but did not have too much time because the wedding reception was an hour away. Loved the chic, modern decor with a laid back vibe, the blue palette was very calming & nice. We were there around 4:00 pm so the place was relatively quiet, got a table near the window with a view of the marina. Service was excellent, staff friendly, and food was good, although the tuna taco my husband ordered was the smallest thing I've ever seen. We're foodies and have eaten at too many places to count and I can definitely say the taco was very overpriced for its tiny size. Near the end of our meal, they were preparing the place for a live band, too bad we couldn't stay. Expect to pay premium prices for waterfront dining. read more

this was a 90th birthday party for a good friend we organized long distance.From my first e-mail conversation with Sean Martin to the end of our party, the experience was exceptional. Trying to do this long-distance could be difficult, but Sean is so skilled at his communication and prompt in his response, it was easy. He was forever patient and helpful and wonderfully flexible. Nothing fazed him - he figured out a way to make it all happen.I cannot say enough about the rest of the staff who oversaw this party. As one would expect, many of the guests were quite elderly and all your employees showed patience and respect for their frailties In addition to Sean, I would like to include Riley, Alex, Sheera, Justin and Mike, who were on that night, and the lovely "lead" waitress Sydney She communicated with me every step of the way, even suggesting a birthday candle on the dessert so everyone could sing Happy Birthday. Just got off a plane from an all-day trip to the west coast. It was 3:30 pacific time, 6:30 my time. We went to Baleen for a small bite to tide us over to dinner. It was perfect. The crispy calamari -including crispy lemon slices-were wonderful. Also had the warm blue cheese with almonds and figs. That with some great bread was a feast. Our server Chris was very attentive. We had such a good meal that we went back for dinner later! Be sure to try the maple glazed pork chop. Yum! read more

We hosted a Graduation Dinner party for 18 on Saturday night (Fight On, USC!), beginning with a Marinaside reception in the lovely firepit area. Everything about the evening was perfect. Bill concocted awesome fresh fruit mojitos and other special drinks for our guests. Chef and the culinary team produced the most wonderful starters (the Bruschetta was to die for!), salads, entrees (the Herb-Roasted Filet of Beef received multiple rave reviews from our guests) and desserts. Over the course of the dinner, Lindsey and her wait team were right on top of our every need and desire, but were so completely unobtrusive as to never disturb, only to serve. I spent time upfront working with Meggie Clausen (Portofino Hotel & Yacht Club Catering) to plan the event. I asked for exceptional quality, value and service, and the Baleen team delivered! Don't waste your time or money! My husband and I went here for dinner last night and it was just a terrible experience overall. They weren't busy when we showed up, we got seated right away. We knew what we wanted to order after about 2 minutes, but it took about 10 minutes to find our waitress again to order our food. She asked if we wanted bread which we did, that took about another 10 minutes to get. We both ordered the clam chowder for an appetizer; it was just average taste wise, which showed up about 40 minutes after we had ordered it. Then we waited another 25 minutes before our entrees showed up. I had the pan roasted salmon with new potatoes and green beans, and my husband had the filet of beef, he said it was mediocre at best. First off the salmon and the potatoes had no seasoning on them at all, not even salt; they both were hard like they had been sitting in an oven trying to keep warm for way too long. The green beans were the only thing to have some seasoning which was like ginger soy something. I'm not a fan of ginger so I won't comment on the beans. For dessert we had the apple crumble. I love any dessert that is apple; it is by far my favorite dessert. That being said this was THE WORST apple dessert I have ever had! I might be off base here, but an apple dessert should have some sweetness to it. This one was bitter, soupy, and just awful. I was really disappointed in the food, I am not that great of a cook, but the salmon I cook at home is way better than what I was served here. It really is a shame that the food is not good because the items on their menu sound amazing. We were talking about how there was so many great thing on the menu that we needed to come back to try them out, needless to say that won't be happening now. By the way, when we finally walked out to go home, it had taken us over 2 hours to grab dinner there, and the place was half empty at is fullest point. I do have to give them some credit because the restaurant itself has a really nice ambiance and a great view of the marina, but that was the only positive thing. read more

While visiting with friends at the marina, I walked from the boat to Baleens and ordered a cheeseburger for my son. I paid cash for the burger and I was told it would be ready in 10-15 minutes. When I went to pick up the burger to take back to the boat, I was told by the waiter that I never paid for the order and he wouldn't give me the food. Although I had a receipt that showed my purchase he was extremely rude. Additionally the waiter attempted to charge me $11.50 delivery charge for a $9 kids cheeseburger? Unfortunately the location is ideal for people hanging out in the marina, but I think the restaurant is taking advantage of people and ripping them off. I was disgusted by the service and the unethical business taking place. read more

Had an amazing dinner last evening at Baleen. We sat right up against the wall with windows open, the harbor view and boats was so peaceful! Food great, but our server really stood out. His name is Alex. What a kind, friendly, funny, professional and efficient person. He took very good care of us, and went out of his way to accommodate a few of our unusual requests.
