Nice, romantic spot. Redondo Rivera has a lot of great places, and this is one of them, especially for a special night out! My only complaint was that we wanted the seafood paella, but they only offered some "house paella" (there is only one paella choice on the menu, which is a disappointment.) It was very good, but not what we went there for. I'll come back and call first to make sure they have the seafood paella on offer that day. Went to Gabi James for dinner because we always have a great meal and experience there. The setting is romantic and intimate, but also great for catch-ups with friends. Parking generally isn't too difficult - there is plenty of metered street parking in front of the restaurant and on nearby streets. Started with the cocktail of the week, the Passion Potion, which had vodka, passionfruit, and egg white. I was a bit disappointed by the drink - my partner and I agreed it just tasted like passionfruit-flavored vodka. Wasn't very balanced, as the vodka dominated the flavor profile. I usually get The Queen's Clover, which is always well-balanced, so would definitely recommend that one. For food, we shared the Valentine's weekend no special foie parfait (chicken liver mousse and fruit gelee), rellenos bacalao, citrus quince salad, duck confit, and all day oxtail ragu. The rellenos were a bit small and the risotto didn't have a classic al dente texture. We have had the salad before, and we love it for its unique citrus and marcona almond taste profile. The menu is very meat-heavy, so having something light and fresh balances everything out. The oxtail ragu is our go-to at Gabi James. We have ordered it every time we've gone because it is a standout dish. The pasta has a nice crisp, and the oxtail has such a rich flavor. The bonus is that it tastes great the next day as well! We shared the fig bread pudding for dessert, which was pleasant and not too sweet. I am giving a 5-star rating based on all our other dining experiences with Gabi James, even though some aspects of dinner fell short this time. We had pleasant experience at Gabi James. Open Table had this place booked solid for dinner on Saturday, so we came just before the dinner rush, seating was plentiful and we got seated immediately. The restaurant has a nice, modern cozy vibe. They have outdoor seating as well with heaters. The restaurant specializes in Spanish and French coastal cuisine, but they're also known for excellent gin and offer variety of cocktails. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable, recommending a few tapas to try. The Gildas, crispy calimari, shishito peppers and glazed pork belly were several of our favorites, but (pan figue) fresh fig on top of goat cheese, drizzled honey and sour dough bread was so delightfully scrumptious. For entree, grilled pulpo was excellent. Perfectly tender and so delicious. Another outstanding dish was Gambas Al Ajillo which is shrimp in butter, lemon and oiive oil. Simple and yet delicious. We shared the seafood paella which was good, but kind of greasy and more on salty side than I would've expected. The glass of Malbec paired nicely with our meal. We finished our meal with churros and fig bread pudding. OMG Bread pudding was so good. I love figs and they were awesome in this. The side of vanilla ice cream pairs well. Churros I thought was okay. Not crispy and have a more donut texture. Overall, I would definitely return with friends and family to try other dishes. read more

Gabi James was on my 'must try' list for a long time. I'm so happy I finally got to try it! I had such a great experience here. My friend and I tried a few different dishes. Citrus Quince Salad - 4 out of 5, only because the other two dishes we had were so tasty. Glazed Pork Belly - 5 out of 5, so much flavor Chicken - 5 out of 5, I wish I could recall the name of it. This was easily one of the best chicken dishes I've ever had. The waiter was excited when we ordered it, sharing that it's his favorite due to the bread in the dish that soaks up all the liquid flavor. It was out of this world!! The only down side was their churro dessert was burnt. But our server fixed it right away. The service was great and the restaurant was dead for a Sunday night (something I can get behind). Had dinner with a friend here and had a great time. The menu offers a nice selection for all types of eaters and they do know about dietary restrictions here. We had Robin as our server and she gets six stars. She knew her wines and made a nice recommendation. She was also extra cool about food allergies. We ordered the tortilla española, tuna, halibut al pil pil and the merguez and all of it was nice. I prefer la tortilla without the aioli (because it's mostly mayo) so I'd opt for it on the side next time or not at all. The halibut was cooked perfectly and we had it without the butter to make it both dfgf. I enjoyed it although I prefer gambas al pil pil which is more common on a tapas menu. The merguez was divine. I've had lamb but not like this and the spices really change the game. Def order this if you're a lamb fan- the arugula goes very nicely with it. All in all, we had a good time. I had previously visited Gabi James for brunch but I came back recently for a dinner date here. We had Saturday night reservations and the place was moderately busy. We started off our meal here with our server Austin's recommendation for the Pan Peche. This was the surprise star of the night. It consisted of a grilled sourdough ciabatta smothered with herbed goat cheese and topped with large peach slices and shreds of arugula. On top of the arugula, they drizzled some honey. The flavors came together wonderfully, giving this starter just the right amount of sweetness. It is a dish that just screams out summer sweet. We were fans of the Pan Peche for sure. Our second dish of the night was the Albondigas Chimayo. These were turkey meatballs in ancho chili cream sauce. Per our server's recommendation, we added in some pan a la parilla. Being a fan of albondigas, I had high expectations for this dish. Unfortunately it didn't quite live up to what I was expecting. Though the meatballs were cooked quite well, the flavor was lacking. The ancho chili cream sauce didn't really add much to the dish and sad to say the pan a la parilla was the best thing about this dish. When the side bread is better than the main component of a plate, there is something to be said. I would pass on this next time. For our main course, we chose to split their Pomegranate Lamb Chops. This came with four lamb chops and some grilled radicchio and baby carrots with pomegranate glaze. This was an excellent entree. The lamb chops were tender and cooked well. The radicchio and baby carrots paired nicely with the lamb. The pomegranate glaze gave a nice sweet flavor that tied everything together. You know a restaurant is good if they can cook lamb chops well. For my drink of the night, I chose to get The Butterfly Effect. I've always been a fan of butterfly pea and was intrigued when I saw this on the menu. This drink has butterfly infused vodka with vanilla syrup, lemon and egg white. It was sweet, refreshing and quite enjoyable. It was a wonderful dinner at Gabi James. All of the dishes with the exception of the Albondigas Chimayo were great. We sat outside. Great ambiance and service. Both the host and server recommended several great items. We had the tortilla española which was well done. However they had a special version I wish we tried as it was slightly on the milder side. We followed it up with the croquettes special (like super awesome tator tots) and calamari which was fresh and light. This place is known for Spanish and coastal French cuisine. It's a place with a lot of shareable plates. It's located in the Riviera and there's plenty of parking, most of it being paid parking. The ambiance is nice. It's easy to hold a conversation but it can get a little loud. Service is fast and professional too. Everyone was so helpful with the menu. Overall I really enjoyed the food here. The seafood paella was perfect. Not too salty and lots of protein. It reminded me of my time in Barcelona. The pomegranate lamb chops were also really good! We also tried their Harissa honey eggplant fries which were unique and very tasty. My kid couldn't get enough. I decided to be a little adventurous with the anchovy crisps and didn't regret it. Took my family here today for Mother's Day with our two kids, really looking forward to it based on all the positive reviews. Unfortunately, the experience didn't quite live up to the hype. Despite seeing plenty of staff walking around, it was surprisingly difficult to get our waiter's attention to place our order. We started with the bread service and chorizo croquettes. The bread and house-made jam were just okay--nothing particularly memorable. The croquettes had to be remade because they forgot the chorizo the first time, but once corrected, those were actually quite tasty. For entrées, my kids ordered the French toast and breakfast sandwich, my wife went with the special $30 giant pancake with berries, and I ordered a basic breakfast plate with eggs, bacon, and potatoes. My kids received their food and completely finished eating before I had to ask about the rest of our meals. My plate finally arrived, and by the time I was finishing, my wife--who we were there to celebrate--was still waiting for her pancake. When it finally came, it was just okay and didn't really justify the $30 price tag. What a disappointing experience it was. Service was slow and inattentive. Took about 20 minutes from the time we sat down until someone came by with the menu and water, and this is after my husband waved someone down. We felt like we were being skipped many times over. Went for dinner on a Wednesday night. It was surprisingly easy to get a table. The staff was very friendly and service was great. I am gluten free and the waitress marked the menu with everything that is gluten free or could be modified. I had surprisingly a lot of options. The food is meant to be shared family style. We ordered a few dishes and limited ourselves to 3 small (pork belly, tortilla española, broccolini) and 2 large dishes (paella and lamb chops) which was way more than enough. What I really liked was the tortilla española, paella, and lamb chops. The paella comes with a squid ink sauce on it, which was great. I think the food here is decent but for the price point, there are better options. Been here twice now - one for a small plates style lunch and once for dinner. For the dinner, i got the filet mignon which was unbearably salty but otherwise cooked to perfection (medium rare as requested). I also loved their winter mulled wine. For the small plates lunch, we sampled a few and our favorite was the pork belly. Parking isnt terrible - plenty of street options and a large lot a block away as well. The food was sadly pretty mediocre from the hype. It wasn't bad but just okay and not worth the price point. Some of the dishes should be $2-$4 less. The fried eggplant was fried like a fish stick instead of a frito. They tried something different with harrisa honey, but more like Mike's hot honey than harrisa flavoring to it. The gambas ajillo was maybe the best on the menu. Pricey for the portion, especially being stingy with garlic and bread. But the quality of the shrimp was good. The paella was just "so-so." Didn't get any hint of saffron, and the chicken was overcooked. The rice was cooked adequately. Nothing wowed me and made me want to go back to try the rest of the menu. Finally, TOO much aioli, which is such a lazy and uncreative cop out. Not everything needs to come with aioli. The decor was good and the service staff was nice. read more

The ambience is casual and quintessential of South Bay. The times I've dined here have always been fun and the meals always pleasant. The service is consistent and the waitstaff always attentive. They have a good variety of food and drinks, nothing stellar but all decent options. When I've been here for dinner, it's usually tapa style with plates to share. Most recently dined here for weekend brunch and had the oxtail hash and the french toast - a little savory and a little sweet. Both were very filling. As is typical of the area, it's mostly street parking or scattered parking lots here and there. So it can be hit or miss depending on the time and day. But it's always a nice area for a walk so I usually don't mind parking a little farther out, especially being so close to the esplanade. read more

Fun cafe about a stones throw away from the beach in the downtown area of Redondo Beach. Came in on a Sunday afternoon, so we ordered from the brunch menu. The menu leans French/ Spanish. There are a lot of fun cocktails and if you have the funds, a really good selection of some rare spirits. We had a reservation for a group of four so we came in and were promptly seated. We ordered the tortilla espanola (Spanish egg and potato omelette) for the table. This was really good and was a nice light bite. I'm a fan of potatoes and eggs, so right up my alley. I split from French toast and the oxtail hash. Good combination of the sweet and the savory. Best of both worlds! The dishes were done well and I thought it all tasted great. We brought our three month old daughter, and everyone was very kind to us. We got seated in a nice big booth to accommodate the car seat. Each were absolutely delicious, and I highly suggest them. The lamb was grilled to perfection, even the fat was absolutely divine. The harissa sauce with the croquettes was spicy and lovely, and the paella was so good! My favorite part was the specials they had for Valentine's Day, both my drink and our dessert were a special for the day and they were very well crafted and very tasty and it made the experience more exciting. This is our friends favorite place to eat at in this area so, on a random Tuesday night we decided to give it a try. This isn't typically the type of food we go for - small portions with big price tags. But just to say we tried it once, we walked in right as they opened. Parking is all metered but during the month of December the city makes it free, so that's a huge plus. There's outdoor seating with lots of heat lamps but it was too cold, so we sat inside and asked if they could close their huge sliding doors. We were immediately served water and a small basket of chips, which were crispy and lightly salted. For a drink we got the Eggnog - $10 for a small, half a cup, whisky infused eggnog...! I took only a few sips but it tasted really good with that slight tinge of sweetness and dust of cinnamon they had on top. It also helped me warm up a little. We ordered three things - Glazed Pork Belly - Date mostarda, pt reyes blue cheese, maple, thyme ($19). Mostarda is a condiment made of candied fruit (in this case, dates) in a syrup with a varied amount of white mustard in it. This made the dish pop in flavor, and I found myself scraping the plate just to have one last taste of it. The meat itself was a little lukewarm, like it had been sitting for a while (even though it came out really fast), which was disappointing for there only being three pieces. It's also pork belly - so half of it is fat...meaning we really only got about 2 pieces of meat to eat. Sobrasada Squash - Butternut, sobrasada sausage, marcona almond, pomegranate, herb oil ($20). Sobrasada sausage is kind of like chorizo, which I didn't really taste in the dish. I think maybe it was those black bits on top of the squash? But I'm unsure if it was that or the almonds. I told my husband to eat all of the pomegranates because I know how expensive the fruit is at stores. It tasted...interesting. I don't know how to describe it - the butternut was sweet but the black stuff was crispy and the pomegranate's added a bit of sour to it. I ate most of it but I don't know if I really liked it or not. Harissa Honey Eggplant Fries - Panko crusted with sherry vinegar aioli ($12). I didn't taste the acidic sherry vinegar aioli - It tasted more like mayo, which I was fine with. The eggplant was fried with panko then it seemed to be coated with the honey and then topped with some chili peppers. This was just okay. I'm glad the food wasn't really hot, but it was barely lukewarm. And it came out really fast. The last thing we had was dessert. It was this fig and chocolate pudding/cake that came in a pretty large bowl. The figs were what I was after and it pairs well with chocolate. I wish the dish was warmer than it was - parts were warm, some parts were not. But the size and taste of it was satisfying. Not too sweet with a hint of sour. Service was good. The woman who helped us was really helpful and came back to check on us from time to time. This place is just okay. I'd go again to try different things if my friends really wanted to try it, but I don't think I need to come here on a whim for a while. read more
