Butterfly was one of the highlights of our stay at The Shay. I stopped in for a light lunch on our first day and ordered the Atún Pacífico ceviche. It was fresh, incredibly flavorful, and beautifully presented. The watermelon aguachile was equally impressive, with bright, refreshing flavors that were perfect for a warm afternoon. Prices are what you'd expect for a rooftop hotel restaurant, but the quality and execution make it money well spent. The setting is what really makes Butterfly special. The covered outdoor dining area sits next to the rooftop pool, creating a true resort atmosphere. Once you're up on the sixth floor, it's easy to forget you're in the middle of Culver City. You can disappear from the city below for a few hours and just enjoy the atmosphere. On Sunday morning, after my daughter's wedding, our family gathered there for breakfast before everyone headed home. I had the open-faced omelet with wild mushrooms, poblano peppers, Monterey Jack, salsa macha, queso fresco, avocado, and micro cilantro. It was outstanding. I also sampled my daughter's pancakes and ordered a side of the smashed fingerling potatoes, both of which were excellent. The only hiccup came when the server accidentally dumped my side of breakfast potatoes into my brother-in-law's lap after the chrome fry basket tipped off the tray. He had already eaten elsewhere and had just sat down to visit with us, so it was an unfortunate way to say hello. The staff immediately apologized and brought out another order of potatoes, which was appreciated. Mistakes happen, and they handled it professionally without letting it overshadow an otherwise excellent meal. Overall, Butterfly serves high-quality food that is thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented in a fantastic setting. The overall vibe wasn't great, uninviting and the food was just ok. Not how I expected my bday celebration to turn out. For spending over $400 you would think to have a decent experience at the least. When we arrived, everyone was at the bar area watching the soccer game. Cool and not a problem but you shouldn't come off annoyed like I've bothered you while " watching the game." I told him I had a reservation. It didn't seem to matter at all. The pool was on the smaller side, but since there weren't a lot of people, it wasn't a problem. However, the water was murky. The cabana was a nice touch we rented it for two hours from 6p to 8p I don't think I could recommend this timeframe because it got too cold (on one of the hottest days of July) and we couldn't fully enjoy ourselves, had to get out of the murky water earlier than expected. It is a cute spot and has so much potential. Maybe it was good at one point and went downhill or someone just stopped caring. There were only two nice servers and that was the cabana server and the guy who brought out our food during lunch he had cute heart glasses. Other than that, everyone there was cold and offputting. Came by here with a group of friends for dinner. Parking is really hard in this area. There's no street parking so you're somewhat forced into parking in a lot. I parked at the building the restaurant is in, ivy station. They annoyingly don't validate, it was a whopping $20. The restaurant is also pretty hard to find. It's located on the 6th floor of the Shay Hotel. It's a restaurant located poolside but it's decorated in a fun, colorful, girly way. It gave me Palm Springs vibes. We got chips & guac for the table. The chips were actually really delicious, crispy and nicely seasoned/salted. They were really addicting! We split some dishes for the table. The brussel sprouts, tostada de atun, and the atun Pacifico ceviche. These were honestly all just okay, none of us were blown away. The tostada had a beautiful presentation but the flavor was a little smoky which I wasn't a big fan of. I also got a pescado taco which was decent. One of my favorite experiences while visiting LA. We used resort pass to use the pool. Something about this spot stood out in my scrolling and I'm so glad it did! Butterfly + pool are two tandem experiences. The service was awesome, we really loved Dana, our Culver City native who took care of us all day and even recommended other spot to go when we left. My friend and I stopped by Saturday night for dinner and drinks and were very well taken care of. The Butterfly is a charming rooftop restaurant with delicious food and drinks. We both had the carne asada tacos and shared the queso fundido con tequila--everything was super tasty, and the fresh tortillas were excellent. I ordered the yuzu margarita with a sugar rim, which was delicious, and my friend had a classic margarita, also with a sugar rim. We arrived around 8:15, close to their 9:00 closing time, but never felt rushed. In fact, it was nice having fewer diners so we could fully enjoy the atmosphere. Our servers, Joey and Malik, were amazing, and Tony at valet helped make the whole experience even better. I'll definitely be back to check out the brunch scene this summer. read more

We chose this restaurant because we had more to choose from but they do provide a disclaimer that the portion sizes are smaller than the usual. We got to try their Guac and queso which both were really good. The Guac was almost perfect. It didn't need any extra lime or salt. The queso was packed with flavor but I think it was a little heavy on the seasoning. The tortilla chips were good and nicely seasoned and the blue corn tortillas were good as well. Next we had the ahi tuna ceviche and coconut ceviche. Both were also tasty and fresh. The coconut ceviche was creamy but included corn nuts which I thought was a little random. The ahi tuna had pecans and that I enjoyed. We both got the Baja fish tacos and agreed it was good. It was just crispy enough w the right amount of flavor. Only thing is they were so tiny and we got one each. The waiter said it's usually one taco but bigger so just so you know. I'd like to order two but one is already overpriced. We finished with some chocolate flan and churros and I think these were the best out of everything. The chocolate flan was rich in this expresso flavor and the churros were crispy outside and shush chewy enough. It came either two churros and chocolate sauce to dip it in which I love! We both got cucumber mocktails which was nice and refreshing. The ambiance was super cute and clean. Definitely got the LA vibes. Theres plenty of seating whether you'd like to sit at a table or the lounges closer to the pool. I def want to come back to enjoy the pool and try out some of their other food but I'll know to expect a bit of a splurge and not quite getting a bang for your buck when it comes to the food. read more

Beautiful room with warm golden lighting, and a cozy fireplace that makes the whole space feel inviting and comfortable. Hits Shrimp with poblano and sweet black chili Perfectly cooked shrimp with that ideal snap when bitten into. The sweet black garlic added depth and richness that made this one of the standout dishes. Fish taco (rockfish) The breaded rockfish was fried to absolute perfection with crisp exterior, tender flaky interior. The chile arbol mayo, crema, salsa pico added that quintessential tastebud lube that is the hallmark of a good fish taco. Very well executed. Chips, salsa, and guacamole Excellent. The chips were warm, freshly made, and perfectly crispy. The salsa and guacamole were bright and flavorful. CHOCOLAN Otherworldly. A moist chocolate cake steeped in espresso and rum, paired with creamy flan, vanilla-coffee caramel, and whipped cream. This dessert was the highlight of the entire meal. Misses Quesadilla de Chicharrón This one fell flat. The tortilla was oily and soggy, and the filling not memorable . Carnitas taco The chicharrón topping added great crispy texture and flavor, but the pork itself fell flat as it lacked seasoning and didn't deliver the depth or richness you'd expect. We tried their dineLA menu and got: Guacamole - lots of lime juice and delicious Quesofundido - very cheesy, greasy, and came with three warm blue corn tortillas Tuna ceviche - Asian inspired flavors with Maggi soy sauce. Quite salty, but this would make a great poke bowl. Shrimp ceviche - shrimp was precooked perfectly. Nice flavors Carnitas taco - way too salty Fish taco - delicious batter fried fish, but the toppings and sauce were watery and made the tortilla soggy Ordered an extra mushroom taco since it was happy hour and on the HH menu. I did not like it at all. Tres leche - pretty good, but cake was super dense Chocoflan - delicious flavors in the chocolate cake and sauce, but the flan part was lumpy and flavorless. Our server was not observant or interested in our table. It took a while for him to first come over and introduce himself. I had ordered the mushroom taco from the happy hour menu, but he charged the full price. I asked him about it and he said he gave us a "regular sized taco". I was excited because I'm a fan of José Andrés as I've eaten at the Bazaar SLS. The place wasn't too crowded. I did have some food allergies and decided the tuna ceviche was the only thing I could order. GOOD: cute decor, excellent service from our waitress, Cynthia and Nelly. Choco flan was said to have been the best thing eaten from the table. BAD: my ginger beer mojito mocktail was overly sour so they remade it without the lime. Maybe the same person made the tuna ceviche because that too was so damn sour, but I was starving at that point and just ate it cuz I was desperate for protein. (I hate that I have to report this) REALLY Bad: my stomach started to cramp so bad while in the restaurant that I took digestive pills and an activated charcoal to ease the pain. Turns out 2 others in our party felt ill through the next day and made the conclusion it was the ceviche (since that's the only thing I had and was the ONLY common denominator). Love! We came for lunch during the week and it was mostly empty but it was perfect because we had all the great service to ourselves! Let me say, this is a beautiful restaurant. Decor is amazing and the vibes are there. With that said, I would never go with a group again. I could go with one or two friends or maybe even solo. But the server I had wasn't really attentive with a large group. At times, he even came off as snarky. But when he then sensed we picked up on his energy and even returned it, hr got better. This is a restaurant under a Jose Andres (a chef and person whom I greatly adore and respect) so I had high expectations. Were they met? Kinda! That fish taco was probably the best fish taco I have ever had in my life. Delicious. I would go back for that alone. The steak taco was meh. Nothing memorial. Chips and salsa which were not complimentary, were very good and so was my drink. The issue is that I had to wait about half an hour for chips, salsa, and guac. Then the server told me when I reminded him over twenty min in, that it was busy. And that's when I shut down with my energy. I don't disrespect and would never disrespect someone handling my food. But I also expect respect since I was not eating for free. Nothing was free, not even my water. So please understand when I say I was perplexed on how I am waiting almost half an hour for chips, guac, and salsa. And I haven't even ordered my tacos yet so I was concerned about how long it would take. But surprisingly the tacos didn't take long to come out and then the server comped my cousin's food as it was incorrect. I think by then he saw we were annoyed with his attitude and he adjusted it. After that, he was very pleasant. I even ordered a to go order to take to my mother who loves fish tacos and I know she would've loved that one... and she did. So by all means, go to Butterfly and enjoy a date, some chat with a friend, or even a solo lunch or dinner with a view of that beautiful pool and glowing butterfly. I will definitely go back for a more intimate experience and perhaps then, my rating will go up. But I stand on the fact that it's not for large groups! read more

On a Tuesday night, it was very quiet. The staff was on the leisurely side, but friendly enough. Our group of five sat at a large round table tucked in the corner. With a heat lamp nearby, it was perfectly comfortable outside. For five people and a good amount of food, we spent under $200--which felt like a great deal. What we ordered (some in multiples): - Yuzu Margarita ($18) - Classic Margarita ($8) - Queso Fundido con Tequila ($11) + Spicy Chorizo ($2) - Quesadilla de Chicharrón ($16) - Young Coconut Ceviche ($15) - Carnitas Taco ($8) - Pollo a la Parrilla Taco ($8) - Pescado Baja California Taco ($9) The food overall was good. All tortillas were made with blue corn and held together well. The tacos were slightly larger than street tacos--easy to share or just right for one person. The ceviche fell a little flat for me, but I'll admit I'm not a big coconut fan. The quesadillas were my favorite: three small portions, gooey cheese, and crispy pork belly that added the perfect crunch. The hotel offers valet for $23 (price may vary), or you can try your luck with street parking or park at the Ivy station which max $18. After cocktails at the rooftop Bohemian bar in downtown Culver City, we loaded into my vintage Toyota Highlander hybrid to drive the .4 miles to East Culver City and The Shay Hotel, a three year-old hotel where Jose Andrés, the great chef, father of molecular gastronomy and Nobel Prize winning humanitarian feeding victims of natural and unnatural disasters and first responders, has fashioned his newest restaurant called Butterfly on the roof of this hotel. The hotel lobby is very modern and interesting as we proceeded up to the roof that opens up into a hostess bay and then a colorful Mexican/Caribbean indoor/outdoor casual but tasteful decor with a swimming pool beyond the dining areas with cabanas and views of the hills around Culver City. The restaurant name is inspired by the small but adventurous Monarch and lively trip around Mexico. Expectations were high because I have eaten at Chef Andrés flagship restaurant Bazaar in LA that showed off his combining art, science and food to deconstruct dishes and recreate them in the most inventive and magical ways that earned him the reputation as the Picasso of food and provided me and my family the most remarkable meal we've ever had the privilege to eat. I've eaten at some of his other restaurants in Las Vegas but he was forced to close Bazaar because the foreign owned SLS Hotel would not give him any break during Covid so he had to close it. He has opened two other restaurants downtown I have not tried yet so I chose this newest one for my birthday. My son and I started with delicious but totally different cocktails: I had the salt foam margarita that was ridiculously and perhaps dangerously good save for the fact I'm a lightweight and cheap date so one was fine for me and my son got a tequila or mezcal, chocolate with artichoke liquor (how is that even possible?) which was delicious. We started with a table guacamole served in a large stone mortar bowl and as great as my killer guac is, this guacamole was spectacular. I tried to reverse engineer this in my mind and mouth examining how this could taste so fresh, so silky smooth with such bursting avocado flavor. Great start. Then since we ordered a bunch of shared and personal entree plates it seemed like the very attentive runners were passing our lovely table dropping off dishes every two minutes. Jeff and Fran shared a Caesar salad and a atun Pacifico ceviche I could not try. Michael and I shared the incredible braised Brussel Sprouts that we all thought was incredibly tasty without being overly charred as some American New restaurants serve it. If only my Mom were alive to see me enjoy Brussel sprouts which, when she overcooked this and all vegetables, I would run out of the house and refuse to it it. The smell nauseated me and I never ate this BS until Renee Mitchell and I were in Santa Fe years ago eating at the beautiful Inn of the Anasazi. This was the first restaurant that served shaved thin Brussel sprouts, charred with cranberries and I don't remember what else that my wife ordered. Harkening back to my detesting these veggies I initially refused to try it. Renee persisted and when I finally tried this dish I had a revelation which continued when we later had this dish at a restaurant so hip that there is no sign outside, Black Market Liquor Bar in Studio City. I ordered the ceviche citricos and a carne asada taco. My son ordered the carne asada and carnitas tacos, with my SIL ordering the enchiladas and my bro the Pescado Baja California. The drinks, guacamole, Brussel sprouts and my ceviche which was light and flavorful were all excellent. The rest of the food we ordered was very good but here I think the expectation raised the bar too high. As a wonderful surprise, my SIL made me a GF almond and orange juice cake. She is a great baker but she was very concerned that this attempt at making a gluten free cake may not have turned out well. The server said they could cut four slices and serve but there was a $5 a slice serving charge. Jeff immediately said no way and when the server said we could cut it and they would provide us plates and forks at no charge, we yelled bring it on. Jeff deftly cut the cake like a more than average white band, and he only charged us $2 a slice. Jeff's horrified look waiting for the verdict caused us a huge laugh and from the first bite Fran was relieved because this moist almondy perfection rivaled anything similar at a French patisserie. She is now taking orders... What a great way to end the meal as we descended into the lobby for the valet and the short drive back to downtown CC. It was a good day in LA, a good time to be alive, and grateful to share it with my family. read more

Our group was very disappointed in this place, considering it is a Jose Andres restaurant. If you're choosing, Zaytinya on the bottom floor of the Shay hotel is a MUCH better restaurant. Butterfly is on the top of the Shay Hotel, right next to the pool. We came for DineLA lunch on a weekday thinking it'd be a quick, especially at the dishes seemed simple enough. Instead we had a long drawn out lunch where easily 15 min past between each course and we were just waiting, to the point we asked for our desserts to go to avoid dragging things out longer. The food was fine, nothing amazing. The highlight was the Queso Fundido to which we added spicy chorizo and came with fresh tortillas -- hard to go wrong with melted cheese. Cerviche was standard, as was the taco (only got 1 for dinela), nothing else really stood out from the menu. Dessert were tiny slivers - hardly worth waiting for. Ended up filling up on tortilla chips while we were waiting (which at least they refill for free), otherwise I'd probably have left hungry given the amount of food provided. Hoping the experience on normal non-DineLA days are better, but I'm not coming back to find out if it is. read more

One of the best DineLA restaurants for lunch (thru Fri, 8/8) I've ever been to: 4-course generous meal, attentive service, outdoor ambience (rooftop), fresh, delicious food, and all for the astounding price of $25/person! That's mighty generous of the owner/management. Among the three of us, we had the guacamole (delicious!), chips (light), queso fundido (nice), shrimp cocktail (wonderful!), atun pacifico (refreshing!), fish and carnitas tacos (marvelous!). For dessert, we had the Chocoflan and Tres Leches - both were delectable! The restaurant doesn't validate parking. We found street parking 4 blocks away. It's located inside The Shay hotel. I highly suggest that the words "6th floor" be added under Butterfly on the signage near the entrance of The Shay hotel, and the word "Butterfly" above or next to 6th floor in the elevator to better direct people. We walked around the pool area and had to peer over the wall to see the view. No wow factor re the view. Just buildings. Perhaps the night views are better. I liked the outdoor poolside rooftop bar vibe and the butterfly theme at the entrance. Butterfly and Zaytinya restaurants are part of chef Jose Andres' group. Like the Conrad hotel near the Music Center, it's hard to get to Jose Andres' restaurant(s) there too because of the dismal lack of signage. Please improve the signage at The Shay. We tried this place during dine LA and had the $25 menu special. It was quite a good amount of food. The guacamole was very generous. The carne asada and carnitas tacos were very dry and hard, over. Needed salsa. The chocolate dessert cake was Dynamite! It was very difficult to find the restaurant, there are no signs that it's on the sixth level, we had to ask the hotel reception. So good! We went here for Dine LA, $25 is an incredible dinner price. Since we were two people, we ordered different things and shared. Highlights were definitely the ceviche - all the food was great but the tuna ceviche especially was a standout. The sauce was incredible, I literally was scooping at it with my spoon at the end. Great easy service, OpenTable reservation, and love a good rooftop. Great spot in Culver! read more

I really wanted to like this place because the rooftop set-up is beautiful and cute, but unfortunately the food and overall experience were disappointing. We ordered the ceviche, shrimp poblano, and fish tacos. Everything was pretty tasteless -- the ceviche didn't taste fresh, and it didn't even come with chips (we had to order those separately). The fish tacos were bland and very average; honestly, I've had better from a fast food spot. The shrimp had a strange aftertaste and was under-seasoned. Drinks were basic -- we tried a Paloma and it was nothing special. The vibe on the rooftop was surprisingly dull despite the nice setting. Service was just okay, but when we mentioned we didn't enjoy the dishes, the server didn't seem to care. Considering the prices, I expected a much better experience. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend Butterfly for the food. read more

The best staff! Service was excellent. They took great care of us. The restaurant sits on the roof of the Shay Hotel with a vibrant interior and beautiful pool with great views. The food itself was delicious. Modern take on classic dishes packed with flavor and very fresh. I enjoyed the Atun Pacifico Ceviche and the tacos. We ordered one of each & they were all great. Definitely recommend and would definitely go back. read more
