Butterfly, in Culver City, is a Mexican Restaurant run by the well known, Jose Andres Group. It is located on the top (6th) floor of the Shay, in an open air layout by its very small pool. It is a small space, but well appointed, candy to the eye, very high up there in summer ambiance, a cool breeze, toe tapping music and the relax vibe. It is difficult to imagine that you are actually in the Los Angeles area. I came here for their 4-course $35 Dine LA Lunch menu. Always looking for something different, I started with the Papas Al Mole. It was overdosed with Crema and Queso Fresco, burying the papas. Less of Mole, thats okay, yet this concoction sogged up the whole top layer of fries and made them worthless. Why do eateries do that? For the second course, Aguachile De Sandia Y Tomate. The star here were the wedges of heirloom tomatoes. They blended well with the watermelon cubes and light touch of Aguachile (not too acidic). Exactly my style, a superb dish. Perfecto. For the main (a hand held choice), for me, the Carne Asada Taco. The Arrachera marinated flank steak pieces were soft, tender, juicy and bursting with flavor. Think dissolution on the taste buds. A well orchestrated combination of a few condiments to highlight the meat (as it should be), all housed in a fresh, lightly toasted tortilla shell that was both crisp and soft. Though a very simple presentation, this taco was a masterpiece in culinary construction and prowess. For the final and fourth course, a no brainer, Churros with chocolate sauce. They could have ended on a high note but did not. Why? The 3 small churro cylinders were cute and ideal, but they were accompanied with a chocolate paste (not a sauce, as per the menu). Thus, taking away the thrill and viscous liquid pleasure of chocolate. As it transpired, this was the last restaurant on my Dine LA "To Do List". And I knew I would pay a price for it, in terms of travel. Getting there, the parking, and the slow, choking traffic crawl back to the SFV, more than lived up to its expectations. The whole round trip, with dining, took almost 4 hours. And yes, the Butterfly was worth it. A fitting finale, for new discoveries and creative eating, during these 2 fantastic weeks of Dine LA. Butterfly is a José Andrés establishment, located on the sixth floor of the swanky Shay Hotel. You can order the food at the poolside or the sit-down patio, all the while enjoying a pool views and those of the surrounding Westside. I ordered a few things both at the pool and the patio, including the Sésamo, a limited-time sesame-based cocktail, chips and salsa, pescado Baja California (fried fish taco), quesadilla de hongos en molito (mushroom quesadilla), and chocoflan for dessert. The Sésamo cocktail was strong, and to be honest, I didn't taste any sesame flavor; I just tasted tequila. Not bad, but not what I expected. Chips and salsa were tasty, especially the salsa, which had a nice, smoky flavor and not too spicy. The fish tacos were the highlight, with a delicately-crispy fried exterior and tender rockfish inside. Quesadillas were pretty good, hefty with cheese and paired with a spicy red salsa. The chocoflan was creamy and milky, a solid end to our meal. Overall, pretty good well-made Mexican food, although the price point is steep for its portion size. Service was extremely slow, and it took a long time just to get our check in the end. But when in town, it's a fun place to check out the hotel, its resort, and the overall SoCal vibes. read more

I stopped by for their dine la menu, and it was amazing! The showstopper for the menu was the ceviche. So citrusy, perfect for a hot summer day. Their tacos were delicious, I had one steak taco. My only complaint is they should double layer the taco with another tortilla since it easily broke apart. The fries with the mole on top of it was an unexpected pairing but it worked out and I'm so glad I chose it. Their margaritas were perfect, and even came in a cute glass with some pretty sea salt foam. Came in to try their Dine LA menu & I loved everything! For my appetizer, I went for the guacamole & chips, very good. My ceviche I chose the Atun Pacifico and it was phenomenal , I had never had a ceviche with pecans in it and it was such a great choice. I got the two mini quesadillas with hongos en molito, so delicious! And for dessert I went for the prickly pear sorbet. My server Zac M. was very kind and attentive. The vibe is if beach house was done in a discerning, welcoming, & not overly bougie (as can so often be the issue with rooftop venues) manner. The service was friendly, helpful, & enthusiastic without being "overly around" during an obvious girls night much needed catch-up. The overall vibe wasn't great, uninviting and the food was just ok. Not how I expected my bday celebration to turn out. For spending over $400 you would think to have a decent experience at the least. When we arrived, everyone was at the bar area watching the soccer game. Cool and not a problem but you shouldn't come off annoyed like I've bothered you while " watching the game." I told him I had a reservation. It didn't seem to matter at all. The pool was on the smaller side, but since there weren't a lot of people, it wasn't a problem. However, the water was murky. The cabana was a nice touch we rented it for two hours from 6p to 8p I don't think I could recommend this timeframe because it got too cold (on one of the hottest days of July) and we couldn't fully enjoy ourselves, had to get out of the murky water earlier than expected. It is a cute spot and has so much potential. Maybe it was good at one point and went downhill or someone just stopped caring. There were only two nice servers and that was the cabana server and the guy who brought out our food during lunch he had cute heart glasses. Other than that, everyone there was cold and offputting. Including the valet and the guy at the front desk, whom I asked where Butterfly was located, a question he seemed to be tired of hearing. read more

Butterfly was one of the highlights of our stay at The Shay. I stopped in for a light lunch on our first day and ordered the Atún Pacífico ceviche. It was fresh, incredibly flavorful, and beautifully presented. The watermelon aguachile was equally impressive, with bright, refreshing flavors that were perfect for a warm afternoon. Prices are what you'd expect for a rooftop hotel restaurant, but the quality and execution make it money well spent. The setting is what really makes Butterfly special. The covered outdoor dining area sits next to the rooftop pool, creating a true resort atmosphere. Once you're up on the sixth floor, it's easy to forget you're in the middle of Culver City. You can disappear from the city below for a few hours and just enjoy the atmosphere. On Sunday morning, after my daughter's wedding, our family gathered there for breakfast before everyone headed home. I had the open-faced omelet with wild mushrooms, poblano peppers, Monterey Jack, salsa macha, queso fresco, avocado, and micro cilantro. It was outstanding. I also sampled my daughter's pancakes and ordered a side of the smashed fingerling potatoes, both of which were excellent. The only hiccup came when the server accidentally dumped my side of breakfast potatoes into my brother-in-law's lap after the chrome fry basket tipped off the tray. He had already eaten elsewhere and had just sat down to visit with us, so it was an unfortunate way to say hello. The staff immediately apologized and brought out another order of potatoes, which was appreciated. Mistakes happen, and they handled it professionally without letting it overshadow an otherwise excellent meal. Overall, Butterfly serves high-quality food that is thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented in a fantastic setting. Came by here with a group of friends for dinner. Parking is really hard in this area. There's no street parking so you're somewhat forced into parking in a lot. I parked at the building the restaurant is in, ivy station. They annoyingly don't validate, it was a whopping $20. The restaurant is also pretty hard to find. It's located on the 6th floor of the Shay Hotel. It's a restaurant located poolside but it's decorated in a fun, colorful, girly way. It gave me Palm Springs vibes. We got chips & guac for the table. The chips were actually really delicious, crispy and nicely seasoned/salted. They were really addicting! We split some dishes for the table. The brussel sprouts, tostada de atun, and the atun Pacifico ceviche. These were honestly all just okay, none of us were blown away. The tostada had a beautiful presentation but the flavor was a little smoky which I wasn't a big fan of. I also got a pescado taco which was decent. We both had the carne asada tacos and shared the queso fundido con tequila--everything was super tasty, and the fresh tortillas were excellent. I ordered the yuzu margarita with a sugar rim, which was delicious, and my friend had a classic margarita, also with a sugar rim. We arrived around 8:15, close to their 9:00 closing time, but never felt rushed. In fact, it was nice having fewer diners so we could fully enjoy the atmosphere. Our servers, Joey and Malik, were amazing, and Tony at valet helped make the whole experience even better. I'll definitely be back to check out the brunch scene this summer. read more

Unfortunately, the actual Dine LA experience was really disappointing. We ordered the $35 menu, and the food was very subpar. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, but it still took forever for our food to come out. The biggest disappointment was the "ceviche" option. There was no indication from the menu that it would literally be two tiny slices of tomato and two tiny slices of watermelon. It was honestly shocking when it came out and felt more like a garnish than an actual course. For a Dine LA menu that should be an opportunity to showcase the restaurant and make people want to come back, this really missed the mark. We chose this restaurant because we had more to choose from but they do provide a disclaimer that the portion sizes are smaller than the usual. We got to try their Guac and queso which both were really good. The Guac was almost perfect. It didn't need any extra lime or salt. The queso was packed with flavor but I think it was a little heavy on the seasoning. The tortilla chips were good and nicely seasoned and the blue corn tortillas were good as well. Next we had the ahi tuna ceviche and coconut ceviche. Both were also tasty and fresh. The coconut ceviche was creamy but included corn nuts which I thought was a little random. The ahi tuna had pecans and that I enjoyed. We both got the Baja fish tacos and agreed it was good. It was just crispy enough w the right amount of flavor. Only thing is they were so tiny and we got one each. The waiter said it's usually one taco but bigger so just so you know. I'd like to order two but one is already overpriced. We finished with some chocolate flan and churros and I think these were the best out of everything. The chocolate flan was rich in this expresso flavor and the churros were crispy outside and shush chewy enough. It came either two churros and chocolate sauce to dip it in which I love! We both got cucumber mocktails which was nice and refreshing. The ambiance was super cute and clean. Definitely got the LA vibes. Theres plenty of seating whether you'd like to sit at a table or the lounges closer to the pool. A moist chocolate cake steeped in espresso and rum, paired with creamy flan, vanilla-coffee caramel, and whipped cream. This dessert was the highlight of the entire meal. Misses Quesadilla de Chicharrón This one fell flat. The tortilla was oily and soggy, and the filling not memorable . Carnitas taco The chicharrón topping added great crispy texture and flavor, but the pork itself fell flat as it lacked seasoning and didn't deliver the depth or richness you'd expect. Getting here is a bit of a challenge haha but once i found the hotel it was located in, then it was pretty easy to get to the restaurant. Lovely views and service is great. Everyone is kind and very accommodating. The drinks and food were not too shabby as well! I had a yuzu margarita that was just what I needed ! And we ordered the queso which was so yummy. And then we also got chips and salsa which was so hard not to keep eating haha. We all ordered tacos which were good but kind of overpriced for the portion you get and also they use corn tortillas that seemingly come straight from the package.. it was just floppy and didn't seem like it was warmed up or anything like that beforehand. We did have warm tortillas with the queso but the tortillas were lackluster like just buying them from a brand that makes processed tortillas. Nice flavors Carnitas taco - way too salty Fish taco - delicious batter fried fish, but the toppings and sauce were watery and made the tortilla soggy Ordered an extra mushroom taco since it was happy hour and on the HH menu. I did not like it at all. Tres leche - pretty good, but cake was super dense Chocoflan - delicious flavors in the chocolate cake and sauce, but the flan part was lumpy and flavorless. Our server was not observant or interested in our table. It took a while for him to first come over and introduce himself. I had ordered the mushroom taco from the happy hour menu, but he charged the full price. I asked him about it and he said he gave us a "regular sized taco". It seemed like the same portion as the dinela menu tacos, but whatever. The restaurant is cute, but the food was hit or miss and the service could have been better. Butterfly is located on the roof of a hotel on a busy intersection which makes for amazing views of surrounding areas! We ordered multiple items on the menu and everything was very tasty, fresh and made to order. Our fave was the camarones al mojo and the tuna Pacifico (ceviche) because of their incredible flavor! Love! We came for lunch during the week and it was mostly empty but it was perfect because we had all the great service to ourselves! I was excited because I'm a fan of José Andrés as I've eaten at the Bazaar SLS. The place wasn't too crowded. I did have some food allergies and decided the tuna ceviche was the only thing I could order. GOOD: cute decor, excellent service from our waitress, Cynthia and Nelly. Choco flan was said to have been the best thing eaten from the table. BAD: my ginger beer mojito mocktail was overly sour so they remade it without the lime. Maybe the same person made the tuna ceviche because that too was so damn sour, but I was starving at that point and just ate it cuz I was desperate for protein. (I hate that I have to report this) REALLY Bad: my stomach started to cramp so bad while in the restaurant that I took digestive pills and an activated charcoal to ease the pain. Turns out 2 others in our party felt ill through the next day and made the conclusion it was the ceviche (since that's the only thing I had and was the ONLY common denominator). Let me say, this is a beautiful restaurant. Decor is amazing and the vibes are there. With that said, I would never go with a group again. I could go with one or two friends or maybe even solo. But the server I had wasn't really attentive with a large group. At times, he even came off as snarky. But when he then sensed we picked up on his energy and even returned it, hr got better. This is a restaurant under a Jose Andres (a chef and person whom I greatly adore and respect) so I had high expectations. Were they met? Kinda! That fish taco was probably the best fish taco I have ever had in my life. Delicious. I would go back for that alone. The steak taco was meh. Nothing memorial. Chips and salsa which were not complimentary, were very good and so was my drink. The issue is that I had to wait about half an hour for chips, salsa, and guac. Then the server told me when I reminded him over twenty min in, that it was busy. And that's when I shut down with my energy. I don't disrespect and would never disrespect someone handling my food. But I also expect respect since I was not eating for free. Nothing was free, not even my water. So please understand when I say I was perplexed on how I am waiting almost half an hour for chips, guac, and salsa. And I haven't even ordered my tacos yet so I was concerned about how long it would take. But surprisingly the tacos didn't take long to come out and then the server comped my cousin's food as it was incorrect. I think by then he saw we were annoyed with his attitude and he adjusted it. After that, he was very pleasant. I even ordered a to go order to take to my mother who loves fish tacos and I know she would've loved that one... and she did. So by all means, go to Butterfly and enjoy a date, some chat with a friend, or even a solo lunch or dinner with a view of that beautiful pool and glowing butterfly. I went there during Restaurant Week to try their menu. I ordered several tacos have pork, beef, shrimp, and fish and each one was excellent. The setting is perfect for a date, with a modern bar located by the pool. The service was very friendly, and I'll definitely go back. It's the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy the vibe, and eat good food. read more

The food here was pretty good. We came for the dine LA experience. The portion sizes were nice. I did not like the dessert tho. The service was also nice, our waitress was very kind and attentive to us especially with us being such a large group. The ambiance was super cute. It was outside near a pool. There was a DJ and he was playing FIRE music. read more

How I wanted to love this place not just because the ambiance was really awesome but it's a Jose Andres restaurant but what a disappointment in terms of the food. The tacos were tasteless, the Brussels sprouts were sour and in a bad way and the ceviches lacking flavor. 2 things stood out though, the guacamole and chips and the Camerones al mojo. Drinks were so so as well, sadly I can't recommend this restaurant for food or drinks. Service was great during our visit but the restaurant was empty coz it was one of those rainy days and the rooftop wasn't really happening. read more

In a world where everything seems to be getting more and more expensive, Butterfly feels like a refreshing alternative. Located at the rooftop pool of The Shay Hotel in Culver City, the ambiance is lovely--soft pinks and greens create a peaceful blend of trendy, tranquil, and alfresco. On a Tuesday night, it was very quiet. The staff was on the leisurely side, but friendly enough. Our group of five sat at a large round table tucked in the corner. With a heat lamp nearby, it was perfectly comfortable outside. For five people and a good amount of food, we spent under $200--which felt like a great deal. What we ordered (some in multiples): - Yuzu Margarita ($18) - Classic Margarita ($8) - Queso Fundido con Tequila ($11) + Spicy Chorizo ($2) - Quesadilla de Chicharrón ($16) - Young Coconut Ceviche ($15) - Carnitas Taco ($8) - Pollo a la Parrilla Taco ($8) - Pescado Baja California Taco ($9) The food overall was good. All tortillas were made with blue corn and held together well. The tacos were slightly larger than street tacos--easy to share or just right for one person. The ceviche fell a little flat for me, but I'll admit I'm not a big coconut fan. The quesadillas were my favorite: three small portions, gooey cheese, and crispy pork belly that added the perfect crunch. The hotel offers valet for $23 (price may vary), or you can try your luck with street parking or park at the Ivy station which max $18. Bottom line: Butterfly is a great spot to enjoy drinks and bites outdoors in a stylish, relaxed setting. read more
