Yesterday my wife ordered takeout from Bamboo for dinner. We used to frequent this restaurant quite often for lunch years ago. It offered a delicious assortment of dishes that always seemed to satisfy our tastes. My office moved west into Encino, and we traveled less frequently to Bamboo. Then came Covid, and everything made dramatic changes, including Bamboo closing for lunchtime. It has continued to only offer dinner hours, making it difficult to revisit the restaurant. We had a yearning for Chinese food and immediately thought about ordering it from one of our old favorite places for dinner. Coming by to pick up the food, I was immediately transported back in time to one of our many lunches, with familiar dining areas and the delectable smells of what I expected to be a great meal. The couple that run the restaurant were super friendly and engaged in conversation with me about the changes in their restaurant and the neighborhood, as a result of the Covid experience. One thing that I was pleasantly impressed with was the same quality and variety of dishes that used to make for an almost weekly lunch experience many years ago. The chicken lettuce wraps were an all time favorite of my wife, and we were sure to order them. If you like rubbery orange chicken then this is the place--yuck!! But the beef steak in black pepper sauce was tender and delicious with only a mild kick to it. I won't say this place earns a bam-BOO but rather a bam-MEH. read more

The fact that I've been coming here for years is crazy :) it's def one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Valley! The food is beyond fresh and made to perfection. For my recent visit, I ordered the fried catfish, wonton soup, and pan fried noodles!! Everything was absolutely flavorful and good!!! I recommend those dishes for sure! They also give really good wonton chips complementary that is very good with sweet and sour sauce and spicy sauce!! It's really clean inside with lots of seating! Lets go straight to the food. 1. Veggie egg rolls. Pass. Pretty confident they are not made there. Which is fine. They had a garlic taste. A huge yuck. And did I mention that you have to squint to see what veggies are in there? 2. Shrimp in bblack bean sauce. Not your typical appearance at other places. Big size shrimp, nice flavored sauce. Win in sin err sherman oaks city. 3. Shrimp fried rice. Had the standard veggies in there peas included. The rice is not your common brown color. Didnt matter. Huge size Shrimp. That was the kicker. I'm always happy to update a bad review - I hate writing bad reviews, but the last meal I had at Bamboo deserved it in spades. But they deserve this one in hearts - I was craving some lo mein or soft noodles as they call it here. I ordered some with chicken, it arrived quickly via DoorDash and they were really excellent. Chicken wasn't rancid, which is always a plus, but the flavor was great and I hate to admit it, but I finished the entire thing by myself, and it was a VERY generous portion. So there. Bamboo used to be my go-to Chinese spot--nothing else even came close. But the last few times I've ordered, it's like the entire restaurant changed overnight. The flavors are flat, the quality dropped, and the food that used to be spectacular is now just... mediocre. It's honestly frustrating. A mainstay for Chinese food in the San Fernando Valley, Bamboo has a large and adoring following. While the restaurant is long on ambiance and boasts a friendly and attentive wait staff, its food it anything but special. Dishes are expensive--$25-$27 for beef, pork, or chicken--and more often than not flavorless. Having said that I need point out that none of Bamboo's dishes are bad, but none are especially good, and none are going to garner it a Michelin. read more

Took me a hot minute to find good, authentic Chinese food. It's a local hotspot for locals. The Pungent chicken is my go to.

Parking is street or valet at the time of this review it was 11 dollars. I have been told owner has changed as well as the menu. Food is still good. Food was not spicy even though we ordered it spicy. Kung Pow only had a few red peppers but lots of peanuts. I liked the black bean shrimp it had. Very good flavor. Beef and broccoli was an ok flavor but meat was tough. The Hot Sour soup needs more sour so ask for vinegar. Service was good. I would rate the food just fair. This has been a go to spot for years but it may of been an off night for the chef The interior is still very high end. read more

Not too thrilled the last few times here. Tonight I'm sick I order soup I get it delivered nothing in the bag except soup and 9 packs of soy sauce. No spicy mustard or chili sauce. I mean who puts more soy sauce in soup especially since it was overly salty as it was. No spoon no napkin no crunchy noodles for the soups usually included. I know there has been a change in ownership, but the food and service are as good as ever. We had the assorted wonton soup, king pao chicken, beef steak in tomato sauce (formerly beef steak Cantonese), Aloha fried rice, shrimp in black pepper sauce and garlic string beans. Hi everyone. Hang in there with me because this will be a long one. My family has been going to Bamboo on Ventura for forever, approximately 2-3 decades that is. I was born somewhere in the middle of their first trip here and the present day. My first memory ever, my 3rd birthday, is set here. We all ate as a family in one of the big corner booths and I had my Princess Belle cake. On my 8th grade graduation, we came here straight after for a celebratory dinner. The kind waiter brought us complimentary orange wedges and juicy lychee. Now, as a student at NYU, I felt moved out of nostalgia tonight to finally write about my many experiences at this iconic SFV establishment. I think the people who are complaining about the food are just ordering the wrong dishes. Let me be frank, there are some dishes on the menu that are not so palatable in my opinion. I'm done gatekeeping, for the sake of the business, here is what you must order next time you go: the fried chicken appetizer and the sizzling rice soup. If nothing else PLEASE order these two dishes. Trust me, they will change your life and alter your Bamboo Cuisine experience for the better. Also the best waiter/waitress here hands down is Joyce. Shout out to Joyce! She is always hospitable, kind, and able to cater to any need or whim. But truly everyone here is as gracious as the last. I have grown very familiar with this restaurant and the staff here. This place that's been such a huge part of my childhood is something I have found myself reminiscing fondly about on this cold wintery New York day. I hope all you will be able to experience just an inkling of the joy I get when I step inside this aggressively early 90s Chinese restaurant. Like seriously the little stone fountain with the fishies brought me so much joy as a young child it's kind of hilarious. Or the celebrity signed portraits, although kitschy, are requisite and fun. Bamboo is back! We stopped going a couple of years ago (after going for over 20 years). While we missed conversing with former owner Joseph at the bar, the new ownership has found their groove! Ambiance is the same, comfortable and quiet enough for conversation. The server was lovely and very patient with our large group. My favorite vegetarian dishes are moo shoo vegetable and dry-sautéed green beans. So good! I'll be back soon. read more

I have been eating at the bamboo Chinese restaurant for nearly 34 years. With about 31 years under the ownership of Joseph. With a change of ownership I was a little bit wary of the quality and quantity of the food. Well I have to say I was completely wrong! This still continues to be my favorite Chinese restaurant. They continue never to miss a beat with their service, portion size and of course taste! They followed the nice tradition of a complimentary appetizer prior to your meal. I've been fortunate to travel the world and I found they have the best sweet and pungent shrimp! The food was as excellent as before, the ambiance was as welcoming and the service was perhaps even better than before. Joyce was the most professional, gracious and attentive server! There's the old Bamboo, that Joe owned. Five stars for sure. The new Bamboo sucks. Ordered take out twice now and both times don't come close to resembling the old. First off I want to start by saying how important this restaurant is to me. I grew up going here and love the food. The staff is so gracious and truly go above and beyond. Now the food, is something else. It is so tasty and they have the most plentiful portions. We always have leftovers but they don't last long because everything is so delicious. The ambiance of the restaurant is so comforting and they have beautiful artwork. Bamboo is truly a staple for Ventura blvd and Los Angeles as a whole. Always an 11/10 experience. Coming out of Yelp semi-retirement due to a broken heart. Bamboo has been my family's favorite Chinese restaurant for 30 years. Very sad to report that we have ordered twice since the management change with the same sad result. Bland, mediocre food that is a shadow of its former self. Kung Pao is now made with oddly sliced, watery chicken breast. Mu shu lacking flavor, low on pork. Hot and sour soup was still OK, but not the same. Everyone makes mistakes, but instead of our favorite dish (shredded pork with hoisin), we received something called Szechuan pork, which also had no flavor and undercooked vegetables. Only writing this in the hope that management sees the consensus building here about the changes and find a way to restore what was once a standout restaurant sea of sameness. read more

One of the best Chinese food that I ever had till date. We ordered the Three flavor Sizzling Rice Soup (they made it vegetarian for us), Assorted Mushrooms, Hot Szechuan Bean Curd ( the Tofu was so soft that it just melted in our mouths, too good!) and Eggplant in Brown Sauce that came with side dishes of both white and brown rice. This is the best Chinese food in all of Sherman Oaks--and believe me, I have looked. I moved here from having spent my entire life being surrounded by good Chinese food, and I was depressed at the lack of options. Until I found Bamboo Cuisine. This place does Chinese food the right way, authentically and super fresh! It's a little bit more upscale/pricier than your local Chinese takeout spots--but the price you pay is absolutely reflected in the quality of the food. I love that it's also family-owned, and the servers actually speak Chinese (and obviously, English)--which is important to me. I came here on Lunar New Year once as I was feeling home sick, and was so touched at their good mood, and accommodation. They ended up sending me home with a complimentary quart of soup, which was so kind! My usual orders are Yang Chow Fried Rice, Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, Bamboo Chicken, Beef & Broccoli--but truly everything I've had here is delicious and authentic. It's been a few months since we dined here and, as usual, we were not disappointed. The wonton soup is the best we've ever had. Our waiter brought us some cream cheese wontons to try as an appetizer. They were amazing. We brought some friends who had never been here before for dinner. They are connoisseurs of kung pau chicken, so we added that entree to our usual favorites. We all agreed the chicken was amazing! We also tried the shrimp in the black pepper sauce- also fabulous. Delicious cocktails (mai tais and lychee martinis) topped off the meal. I have never had a bad meal here in 30 years. Definitely the best Chinese in the San Fernando Valley. Really nice fancy old school Chinese restaurant ambiance makes you feel right at home and comfortable. The staff here always goes above and beyond to make your dining experience wonderful. read more

Sadly, this valley institution has obviously changed hands, and the food is now pretty awful (strip mall fast food Chinese is better). The egg rolls were inedible. The veggie lo mein had literally no vegetables except for the broccoli we requested to be added. The dry sauteed string beans, formerly sauteed in onion and garlic, were tasteless. This may explain why at the height of dinner time on a Saturday night, when you used to have to wait a half hour or more for a table, about a third of the tables were unoccupied. This is a huge loss for the area. We are really bummed. read more
