I had never eaten here, even though they've been around for about two years and I live nearby, as there was a previous Thai place in the same space that wasn't very good and I didn't realize this was a different restaurant with different ownership. I happened to see a really glowing review and then realized the place had four stars. I had actually called them a few days ago to see if they had lunch specials and if I had missed them. The nice guy on the phone said they did have them but that they had ended at 3 PM (about an hour before I called). So tonight, I decided to make sure they were still open and find out if they had any dinner specials. They did, for only $20! I had called them right at 9 PM to make sure that the closing time of 9:30 PM listed in Yelp was correct and to ask them what time was last order. Last order was at nine, so I gave it to them on the phone. The reason it was in to-go packaging in my photo was because they mistakenly thought that I wasn't going to eat there. I had my usual benchmark dinner of pad kha prao khai (holy basil or mint leaves with chili and chicken). Absolutely top marks. They knocked my socks off. The quality was exceptional, the ingredients excellent, the recipes awesome, and the most greaseless tasty vegetable spring rolls I've had in years. Really impressive. The husband is the waiter/server/host and the wife is the cook. That's it. Except for "The Boss", lol. My guess is their daughter is about seven or eight years old, and very sharp (quite obviously pictured in their logo). I was looking for something good to eat that was local to where I was filming and came upon this restaurant from Yelp. I was happy with the reviews I'd seen and the comments people left so I thought I'd try it for myself. FOOD 5/5 I ordered the lunch special which meant your choice of an entree, appetizer, and a drink for $17. I chose the Shrimp Penang with Jasmine rice as my entree, got dumplings for my appetizer, and Thai tea for my drink. The flavor was on point across the board for the Shrimp Penang. It had just the right amount of spice and was very well balanced. The dumplings were tasty as well and came with a dipping sauce that wasn't my expected sauce that sweet and sour but was the perfect pairing. The Thai tea was well made too. The chef knew what she was doing. SERVICE 5/5 As soon as we arrived we were sat, there were few people in the restaurant so we had our choice of where to sit. The waitress was so sweet and very helpful. I told her what I usually like and asked questions. She was patient and made great recommendations. She gave us the perfect amount of time to figure out what we wanted to order before returning to take our order. She had great timing in general for her interactions with us. AMBIANCE 5/5 I didn't go there looking for a vibe. I went there looking for great food and I got just that. I was there with friends and some colleagues for lunch and the setting was great for us to come eat and talk. The space was cozy and just the right size. After we ate I thanked the chef and the waitress and told them how great everything was. I liked that I could see straight into the cooking area and talk to the chef through the glass. It made things feel more personable and allowed me to communicate with them easily. They gave me the cutest little to go box for my few dumplings I had leftover. It was a great experience, I recommend checking out this place if you're looking for great quality Thai food at a great price point. I will definitely be going back. read more

I wish I took pictures of our food because I absolutely love Kaohorm's offerings! The restaurant is operated by a sweet woman who works tirelessly in the kitchen and is incredible at providing authentic and tasty Thai food efficiently. Inside is a bit small and quaint with smooth, wooden tables and a clean interior. Also, her daughter is the CUTEST! We loved the spicy fish fillet, garlic green beans + mixed vegetables, Pad Thai with tofu, green curry with chicken, and pumpkin shrimp curry with brown rice! Everything was lovely and we had some leftovers that tasted great the next day. Four stars--why not five? : there are some inconsistencies with the quality once in a while because of how small the staff is. This is a cute little place located right on the street, you can find street parking. Inside there's a couple tables, so it's good for a date? Friends meet or a small group of 4. The workers were lovely over the phone when I called to place my order. I had the pad Thai (gluten free) with beef. I asked for chili sauce on the side to spice it up, and I checked in on help when I got there and received a "free soda or Thai tea voucher" I chose to use the Thai tea! This was soooo sweet and creamy, I ended up adding it to another glass over ice and watered it down. The noodles were a massive portion, it lasted me for another's days lunch! I've driven by this place so many times but I never stopped to eat inside because I thought parking was impossible. I'll usually get it to go but then one day the lady there told me that there's free parking in the back! You're in luck if your favorite Thai dish is chicken pad see ew. It's the best thing they make. The noodles are nicely separated and perfectly chewy. There's a good balance of flavor - not oily, too salty or even too sweet. The Hot Basil chicken aka the chicken kra pow (minced chicken with basil leaves) is my go to but here it's made with chicken breast so it's not as tasty as your traditional kra pow. Still good though especially with a double dose of fried eggs! Make sure you ask for fish sauce on the side with chopped chilies so you can spoon a little on your fried eggs. Super friendly staff. There are a few small tables inside the tiny place. When I had dinner there, no one else dined in. Everyone I saw walking in were picking up to go orders. Kaohorm is one of the better places for Thai along Ventura Blvd. Sit down or take out - either way it's going to be good. I've been here prior when it was called 'Kao Cafe' and although it wasn't bad, it wasn't good enough to come back again. Since they changed their name, we decided to give it another shot. Called over the phone to order and my sister went to pick it up. 1. Beef pad Thai- little bland but noodles weren't bad. Beef was little chewy. Plentiful amount though. wish they gave limes. 2. Beef pad see ew - this one was actually not bad. Beef was hard but the noodles were cooked nicely and sauced perfectly. Didn't like that there were only a handful of veggies and they were all the hard stem pieces but overall it was good. They have a yelp check in deal for a free soda or Thai tea, however when we asked the lady rudely said 'it's only for dine in' even tho it doesn't state that on the check in. Oh well. It's only a soda, didn't have to be so rude. Glad we got to try it out again. Wouldn't be back unless we had to get somewhere close by. I am devoted to a different Thai restaurant but decided to give this place a shot because it was closer to us, and we were hungry. Wow, I'm so glad we chose this place over our usual spot because this place is amazing. It was so good we ordered it as take out the following night. The pumpkin curry shrimp is to die for. The squash/pumpkin is sooooo soft. The flavor of the curry is unreal, and the shrimp are a good size. The crying tiger was cooked to perfection, and the sauce that comes with it is so delicious. The chow mein noodles were also good, I do wish there was more in the order. The coconut shrimp appetizer was so crunchy, and the shrimp on the inside was cooked perfectly. As mentioned, we had this two nights in a row. Obviously, the best choice is dining in, but even take out it was still really good. Give this place a try. You won't be disappointed read more

Solid Thai food on Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks! Came here last Sunday (6/9/19) around 6:30pm for my first time and left pretty impressed. It might not be the best or most authentic Thai restaurant in Los Angeles, but the food is certainly fresh and tastes delicious. Prices are pretty reasonable, as well. To eat, I ordered the grilled salmon, priced at $14. This included a generous slab of salmon with steamed broccoli and carrots. The salmon was cooked to perfection, and I really enjoyed the sauce that was poured on top of it. The vegetables were also cooked well. My friend ordered one of their fried rice dishes and had no complaints. I thought the serving sizes were very fair for the price. If looking for a Thai restaurant in Sherman Oaks that won't break the bank, Kao Cafe is an excellent option. The food is good and the quantity is sure to satisfy. Ordered food from here last night at the last minute and they delivered it pretty quickly! As I've mentioned in previous reviews of Thai restaurants, I have one in particular that I am absolutely in love with. You know, that one Thai restaurant where nothing can compare to, and it holds a special place to your heart. The thing is, it's a little bit of a drive from my apartment so when I'm not in the mood to drive out, I need to find something good by me. I remembered Kao Cafe because its located on Ventura Blvd. near my work. I had a co-worker who used to live in Thailand for a bit and told me that this place was the closest tasting Thai food he's found by our work to the real thing. I ate here once with my vegan friend and remembered it being pretty good. So last night, after relaxing and not wanting to go out, me and my bf were hungry and decided to order food. I remembered Kao Cafe and decided to try them. I ordered a large coconut soup with shrimp and a pineapple curry with shrimp. One white rice and one brown rice. Totaled out to about $30 with tip. Speedy delivery and the food was REALLY good. If I want to order Thai food delivery again, it will be from here.
