Been here 2 times before both times for take out. The food is good. The place is not clean. Its pretty dirty for a restaurant in this town and makes me question why I bother to try this place. The first time I got take out the woman owner was screaming at someone on the phone over plastic forks and knives not being in the take out bag. It's strange but okay, the reviews for food are good, so maybe she was having a bad night. Tonight we wanted some food to bring back and eat during the movie night in the village green. As we are waiting for food to be prepared, it clearly started down pouring rain outside. I ask very nicely if we would be able to eat in instead. A lady looks like owner answered I ordered 2beef romain and 1 b&b. I asked 1 and 1. Still came out twenty something. She said b&b is $15 and it is too much for me. I don't exactly recommend Ridgewood for Chinese food. Well at least Ridgewood, NJ (maybe Ridgewood, Queens, joking joking.) I had some spicy tofu dish and it was OK. The price is a bit much than I'd usually pay but the portion size was good. I'm putting it at a 3, not since the food was amazing but it's definitely better than your regular take-out Chinese joint. It's hard to find good quality food for take out these days. You gotta REALLY want to make the effort to decide, find and retrieve takeout. My picky boyfriend highly respected Bamboo House for their great intricacy of cooking, said they really know and take pride in what they're doing. So we ordered and picked up promptly, the food was 10/10. although there was a teeny tiny phone issue, which can happen to anyone, any circumstance. They called me the next day and offered to give me what we had actually order as compensation. As a vegetarian and service worker myself, this was an amazing WONDERFUL surprise end to this situation. Came here after several people said this was the best Chinese around. Well walking in was a treat a sweat lady named Sheri greater me. The seating is small and there is loads of character. The place looks like someone back room where you can watch your mother cook. I started with moms dumplings and they were great. Home made and fresh. While waiting for food several people came in for take out and they all order moms dumplings. Testament to their greatness. So I had for main course my usual general tso chicken. I know not very adventurous I do love this dish. Portions were huge which is good I can take food home for dad. Sherri is a peach and a very lovely person. But when we were driving through Ridgewood looking for Chinese food, we weren't sure if it was the place by our church. My point is, the place is small and if you're not looking for it, you might miss it. :) We sat at the table closest to the window. Sherry was very nice and friendly. The food was great. While picking out what we wanted, Sherry gave us fried Won Tons (I think) and some duck sauce to dip in. Never had that before and it was quite good. For starters, I had Won Ton Soup that was fresh and very tasty. For the entree I had the lunch menu Pepper Beef and the beef was VERY tender. I don't think I've ever had beef that tender from a Chinese food establishment. Fried rice was good. We were there probably an hour and there was a steady stream of people getting take out. A few thing to be aware of, first it's a hole in the wall place, cluttered decorated with crazy stuff. Second, the older woman who waits the two tables and does take out orders is Sherry the owners wife. She's a bit gruff. However, if you are kind to her she seems to respond in kind. So we take a seat at the only available table and were greeting by Sherry the owner. She is super sweet and told us how she's been in business for 24 years and was a single mother when she started. So after we told her what we wanted she said you can have those anytime I suggest the mango chicken and pointed at a bowl of fresh mangos to pick from so she can cookout meal with. The second dish was the garlic ginger chicken. OMG! amazing can't say enough about this place. 5 star food and 5 star service. My family just enjoyed another incredible meal from Bamboo House in Ridgewood. Sherrie opened Bamboo House 33 years ago - just about the same time that I started directing the band at Ridgewood High School. We were both so young - in our 20s, but both so happy to be in Ridgewood. Over the course of three decades we've become good friends. She's always supported the school, and the band, and her daughter was even my student while she was at RHS! Through it all, her food has been quite simply the best. Restaurants of all types have come and gone in the Village, but Sherrie and Bamboo House have stood the test of time, consistently providing exceptional food at an exceptional value. Now under the dire circumstances we find ourselves in, Sherrie has had to increase her prices by 20% - her first increase in 8 years. And that's because her wholesalers are no longer delivering to her shop. She is shopping at grocery stores and paying full retail prices to continue to provide for her customers. After we finished our fabulous meal and put away the leftovers, I phoned her to thank her for the abundance of delicious food. She broke down crying, telling me that she's been accused of being greedy for raising her prices, and that she's been experiencing horrible, racist remarks; that she is doing everything she can to stay in business because she just wants to serve this community that has always treated her so well in the past. Through it all, Sherrie continues to work incredibly hard, so if you want to place an order (which I HIGHLY encourage) and if you can't get through on the phone, it might be best to go to the restaurant and order in person - and please be patient - you may need to come back in an hour to pick up. That's what we did tonight and it was well worth it - for all the right reasons! We always go to this little place when it comes to Chinese food dining. Dining? Well, it's really a takeout joint with a few tables in it, but the food is good at the tables, can't say I have ever ordered take out from here. We start off with duck sauce and "Chinese chips" if you will, I have no idea what the fried deliciousness's are called. The homemade duck sauce is awesome, the more Sherry brings the more I eat. On to the pork and scallion dumplings, good god these are good. In fact they are all good, whatever dumplings she has that night. A light ginger soy sauce gives them just the right amount of bite. Next are the homemade egg rolls, larger than you average take out place and way tastier. Unfortunately, the past few time they have been on the greasy side. My wife has her staple, shrimp with garlic sauce, which she always says is the best around. I, tonight, opt for the Lovers Star - chicken and steak, battered and deep fried with straw mushrooms, green peppers and baby corn in a sweet but tangy brown sauce. It was quite tasty and the chicken and steak were crispy goodness, even under the sauce. Normally a dish like this tend to make the fried part becomes a soggy, pasty mess, but not here. $44.00 before tip may seem a little high for eat in takeout Chinese food, but you leave very full with half your meal in tow. We can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. Unbridled squaller and unsanitary we'd imagine. We ordered the vegetable lo mein, the General Tsao's chicken, and a vegetable fried rice. This was the most disgusting Chinese food we ever ate in our lives and I actually got sick from the chicken (diarrhea). It was tasteless, dry, and obviously not fresh (frozen). I've been a loyal customer for years. Mom's dumplings are great. But lately, the owner has become somewhat cranky and has screwed up my order at least twice. When I called to complain, she was very defensive and threatened to put my order up on "the wall of shame" (bad customers). The food is good BUT: If they are serving table customers, they don't answer the phone. The minimum for delivery is $15. Most places are $10. Prices tend to be a little high. BBQ spareribs have been getting smaller lately. If you get pick up, they take debit/credit cards but delivery is cash only. Why???
