a variety of food items on a table
    Brian R.

A lot of Chinese restaurants in my area are closed for safety concerns due to the coronavirus. I drove to and my wife went inside to pick up the food. She said that it was small and they were using the only table in the dining room for the takeout orders. There was no picture of the food on the wall like you would expect. We noticed it was a little more expensive than we were used to, but realized that we got a lot of food. I tried the General TSO's chicken like always and my wife got the chicken and broccoli, like every woman I know. The quality of this food really blew my mind. I think that every single place I've ever had Chinese food before probably used the same frozen chicken and I've never noticed it until now. I have questioned if it was really chicken before because chicken doesn't come in those shapes. This place must make the chicken fresh. You can really taste and see the chicken when you bite into it. The sauce wasn't as flavorful as I prefer and was also a little watery. The chicken and broccoli was perfect. The quality of chicken makes this place far superior than most Chinese restaurants that I have had. The vegetable lomein had a good mix of mushrooms, corn and cabbage. All the ingredients tasted fresh and clean. The egg roll was huge and also delicious. I'd definitely recommend checking this place out. Pick your self up some dinner and have enough for left over for a lunch or two.

Busy in and out of Bamboo on a Thursday. Shrimp green beans and ginger tasty and fragrant basil chicken. Feasted on take out. TY Sherry Aldo

Dumplings are amazing. All the food is fresh. Not that fatty fake chicken you get at most Chinese places.

PLEASE READ people of Ridgewood…read more This place denied me service today. I was dressed on my way to a Pride Event. I had a rainbow necklace in my hands, and was wearing a pink light hoodie. Dress pants, dress shoes and light blue polo. Totally appropriate. They told me that they didn't have any coffee. At first this was just weird (the place was virtually empty, and it is a CAFE). I asked if I could use the bathroom, and the lady looked me up and down. Her eyes locked on my rainbow necklace, and she said "you can go across the street." I thought she had to kidding, but as I looked at her I saw an expression that held mild disgust for me on her face. "Public restroom across the street" ( which there isn't...she was directing me to the stop and shop across the street, another business). I couldn't help but understand and feel what she was saying as: We don't want people like you here. Go where you belong. As I walked out I couldn't help but notice the sign they display that says "Ridgewood, There is No Place Like Home." I can't believe this exists in 2025 Ridgewood.

I ordered the mango shrimp with mixed Chinese vegetables from the healthy menu, and the shrimp were perfectly cooked--fresh, tender, and served in a light, delicious sauce. First of all, the interior is just as impressive and immersive experience as the outside - it's worth a meal there just for the ambiance. But luckily it's not just about the atmosphere - the food lived up to it as well! Our favorites were the 3 cup chicken and the Mandarin pork chop. Both unique dishes that we hadn't had before and were delicious! If you like the classic american Chinese dishes, they also made a great version of chicken with broccoli.

American Chinese food was ok, though much of it was still off-temperature due to the commute over. The rice and noodle was just-ok. Not as good flavor as an AJ Bistro. Gold coin steak was saucy, yes, but meat was tough. General cho's was soggy. The more authentic Chinese dishes, though, were much better - the xiaolongbao were good, BBQ spare ribs people liked (I found too dry and lacked flavor in the middle of the rib meat, needed more marination), Shanghai bok choy with mushroom was great, lobster & scallion was excellent. Seared green beans were good. Overall, mixed bag on dishes - I think it'll be better when I go to eat in-person.

We walked into a space with a rustic and earthy design that felt warm and comfortable, the kind of room that stands out from the typical tourist-area restaurants nearby. The dining room had a relaxed, inviting energy with a layout that accommodated both small groups and larger parties, and the focus felt centered around the food rather than the spectacle of the neighborhood. The food is where Mountain House really stands out. We ordered a few dishes and found the Mapo tofu one of the highlights, with a deep, rich flavor and a balanced level of heat that made it feel more complex than many versions of the dish we have tried. The combination of spice, seasoning, and texture came together in a way that felt carefully composed. The Sichuan-style dishes also showcased the restaurant's strength with bold mala flavors, bringing the characteristic numbing spice without completely overwhelming the other elements of the dish. The fried rice was another standout, simple but executed well, with a comforting quality that made it a great balance alongside the more intense Sichuan dishes. The restaurant also offered a variety of dishes that worked well for sharing, including options like pork belly and seafood-based dishes, making it a good choice for groups who wanted to try multiple flavors instead of ordering individually. We appreciated the small touches that added to the overall experience, including the complimentary pickled vegetables and tea service, which helped make the meal feel more complete rather than just a series of dishes arriving at the table. Service during our visit was attentive, and the staff were helpful with navigating the menu and spice levels. They offered guidance on which dishes would work best for our group and adjusted the heat when we asked. The main thing to keep in mind is that Sichuan cuisine can vary significantly in spice level, and some dishes can be much hotter than expected. If you are not used to mala spice, asking for recommendations or adjusting the spice level is worth doing. The portions also make this a better option for sharing, especially if you want to try several dishes. Overall, Mountain House is a strong option for Sichuan food. The combination of bold flavors, comfortable atmosphere, and attentive service makes it a place worth returning to, especially if you enjoy spicy Chinese cuisine and want a restaurant that focuses on the flavors and techniques of Sichuan cooking rather than just convenience.
