This restaurant and the Green Machine sushi roll is the reason I request a visit here every time I visit. We were greeted as soon as we walked up and it was nice to feel like they wanted to find us a comfortable place to enjoy. The Green Machine sushi roll is OMG delicious, and this is coming from a person who hates cilantro. The vegetable tempura and shrimp tempura were also prepared to perfection. Crisp without being greasy and a nice assortment of veggies. Also, the dip that comes with it is so fresh tasting and really helps lift the heaviness that fried food can feel like. The restaurant itself is nicely designed. I also know that restrooms are widely reviewed, but the restrooms in Bamboo sushi are so nice. You actually have privacy. My experience at Bamboo Sushi was just ok. The food was fine - nothing special. I enjoyed the spicy edamame, but the rolls were not memorable. The space was cute and the wait staff was kind. We were sat right next to a woman and her young child when there were many spaces open for 2 - but I'm sure they have a rotation they were trying to follow. Are Seattle prices worth paying for sustainable sushi? A question for the ages. (Okay who am I kidding, if you care about the "sustainable" part then you clearly have enough money to do this. =D) So then, good sirs and gentlewomen, let us address each other like the proper elites we are and forgo any discussion of the prices. Let us also, in the spirit of trusting the good USDA to do their job for once, assume that the sourcing of the fish is swift, accurate, and of course, sustainable. Let us just consider the taste of the sashimi served, as I would normally do. And to that I say: This restaurant chain is not only dedicated to sustainable seafood. They are also dedicated to utilizing the salt of the entire Pacific, and it SHOWS! I mostly identify as a temporarily-embarrassed Fort Wayner, so let me use some Fort Wayne terms for a moment: Honestly, this place reminded me a lot of Tolon. There is great food in here, but the sheer amount of salt ruins it. In contrast, their yakumi (nigiri & sashimi condiments) is super in-the-background, to the point where I question if it was ever really there. Some may say that is the point. I say Haru is rolling in its... money. Rolling in its money. The yakumi is what makes that joint so much more alive and well. Speaking of Haru, the kara-age at Bamboo Sushi also makes a great contender to the tatsuta-age from the FW place. That is to say, it is really great... if not for the sauce that tastes like not enough mustard dunked in too much mayo, where the mustard is constantly trying to make itself known in the most obnoxious way possible, yet the mayo's sourness is the only taste that lingers around. Yeah, you get the pattern by this point. Still, the silver lining is that Bamboo Sushi knows enough not to put salt on EVERYTHING (unlike a certain joint mentioned in this very review). Being a fresh-fish joint - and the fish is very fresh - you can still have a great meal if you know what to avoid. As a bonus, they also guarantee that all of their catch is free of gluten! Go figure! Really, Bamboo Seattle's only fault is that it is in dire need of a saucier. However, I don't remember seeing any fish that was sourced from the vicinity of France, so maybe they're just revolting against that system in their own little way. To end on a positive note, that matcha panna cotta - served with raspberries and pure milk powder crumbles - was one of the best Japanese-inspired desserts I've ever had. Bamboo Sushi has been one of my go-to sushi spots since the day it opened in University Village 5 years ago. The Green Machine is an absolute must-try, even for those who question a fully vegetarian sushi option (I was a heavy doubter before I tried, and I now cannot go to Bamboo without ordering it). However, I don't think i would come back for regular menu unless they had a good happy hour deal due to how obscurely expensive their menu is. Miso soup was 6 or 7 dollars for a very small bowl! It wasn't top notch miso, pretty generic. The dessert that was part of the 3course was a black sesame brownie with icecream which i thought was a bit too sweet, lacked texture and overall not the most pleasant kind. If this place was AYCE, I would go here all the time! The restaurant itself is located in U-Village and the interior of the restaurant is simple, yet beautiful. We were greeted with very kind staff who were very attentive to our needs and allergies, and our server gave us some wonderful recommendations. The FOOD was delicious! 3.8 Seems like I picked the wrong day to come because the chirashi bowl really lacked in the variety of fish. I don't think mine even came with scallops. I feel when I visited last time there was more variety and seems like it goes for the same with other people's latest reviews. Really good Sushi place in University Village. Visited here a couple of times and they have plenty of seating. We ordered the chicken karaage, Green machine roll, Friday the 13th, shrimp tempura roll, california roll for dinner along with their house sake. While all the sushi rolls were great, the one that was OUTSTANDING was the Green machine roll. The sauces on this roll are just amazing and I have not tasted something this good on sushi ever. We crave to eat the Green machine roll week after week and stop by here. The chicken karaage was a little chewy/rubbery and was normal fried chicken nothing great. Some of the other rolls lacked some sauce but you cannot go wrong with the green machine roll. Their house hot sake was delicious and was perfect for a cold cozy evening. Staff was polite and friendly. They do have happy hours from 4-6PM daily but sadly not their entire menu is on happy hour (sad that green machine roll is not on the happy hour menu but it is worth the full price 24*7). I had the opportunity to check out Bamboo Sushi twice, at a Yelp Elite Event (12/7/21) and then returned today for lunch (1/31/22). I first heard about sustainable sushi at West Seattle's Mashiko. The concept of Bamboo Sushi at UVillage had me a bit skeptical because fusion, healthy, sustainability seemed like a lofty, tall order to execute. The YEE back in early Dec 2021 was focused on collecting snacks for a homeless shelter, but trying one of their signature rolls got my attention. The Yelp swag also included a generous gift card. I returned today to give Bamboo Sushi a fair shake today for a hearty lunch. C19 vaccination status is checked upon entry. After that I was seated at a two top with a menu and water. I liked the vast interior with copious natural light. It also allowed for socially distanced onsite dining. My waitperson, Sibyl, was very welcoming. She also made a great recommendation to try their bento box ($28), where I also added scallop/hotate nigiri (2 pieces for $7). I was also brought a teapot of piping hot green tea. This was a nice touch, as I was still cold settling in from my chilly walk. Notable that service was unobstrusive, but up to four different people checked on my dining well being. I may have been dining solo, but was not ignored during my pleasant lunch. It was just nice to get out and have a spontaneous, leisurely meal. I surprised that my hotate/scallop nigiri had a light sear. I'm accustomed for it to be prepped raw. Pickled ginger and heart shaped wasabi was also brought to the table. These were tasty! The bento box was very generous and visually pleasing. This came with fresh salad, 6 piece vegetable tempura with dipping sauce, miso soup with salmon, Green Machine signature roll and three piece nigiri. Considering this was my first meal of the day, I was stuffed. I had to leave some soup and tempura behind. It was nice to have the ratio of 3/4 veggies and 1/4 protein, plus well hydrated with water and tea provided. The garnishes were also light and items well seasoned. Overall it was a splurge for lunch with tax and tip, but it was offset with the generous gift card from Yelp WA and Bamboo Sushi. Their slogan of being sustainable, delectable, possible...yes, accurate on all counts. Convinced this skeptic to have an open mind and palate. I tried Bamboo Sushi for the first time on a trip to Portland a few years back, but never got the chance to try the Seattle location until just this past weekend. We got there around 7:30 PM and even though our reservation was for 8 PM, they were kind enough to seat us early. It took us a while to decide what to get but our waitress was ready to take our order as soon as we were! Our food also came out fairly quickly, which gets bonus points from me because I was very hungry Albacore Nigiri - Loved it! The fish was great and the ponzu yukumi was a great addition. Kanpachi Nigiri - Didn't like it as much as the albacore, but the fish was still great. Spicy Salmon Crispy Rice - Was really excited for this, but it ended up being pretty mediocre. Cool concept, but the execution wasn't quite there. The crispy rice was both hard and chewy at the same time. Or maybe I just prefer traditional, "soft" sushi. Ocean Farmer - Definitely the favorite! Delicious but expensive sushi in the U-Village! To start we shared the shishito peppers which were fried perfectly and had a nice sauce with lots of bonito shavings. However, the vegetable tempura batter was grainy like bland cornbread. On to the sushi, I had the chirashi bowl that came with a nice variety of fish cut in generous portions, which I would hope for in a $37 dish. I really appreciate the sushi rice was room temperature instead of cold at other places, and everything in the chirashi was good except the mackerel was dry and chewy. My wife and daughter shared a rainbow roll and California roll, and both were good sized and fresh tasting. Bill for lunch came out to around $115, so it's not cheap. Super cute sushi spot that is 100% gluten free! They have a sushi counter. Servers are knowledgable about the menu items which is helpful because they have a pretty extensive menu. They have 3 set sushi platters for different size parties which I think is an excellent way to try the best sushi items on the menu, taking all the guess work out for you. Our party of 4 got the smallest assortment that's meant for 1-3 guests, it was so beautiful and a good jump off point for our evening...after that we just supplemented items we also thought looked good. This is more than a sushi restaurant, they have tons of cooked items too. I only regret that I did NOT try the tempura, as it is 100% gluten free...I guess I'll just have to go back! They also have other cooked items like chicken karage and agedashi tofu...all 100% gluten free which can't be guaranteed at most Japanese restaurants since soy sauce contains gluten! I'll take my husband this time, he loves tempura and is not gluten free so he'll be an excellent judge if the tempura & dipping sauce can pass...stay tuned! I've had a sushi obsession for well over 15 years and never have I heard about something called "sustainable sushi". I have a foodie Instagram I occasionally post on for fun and started following all the hot sushi spots in Seattle. One day I saw a story on Bamboo's IG with a photo of something yummy looking and I immediately looked at my husband and said, "this! I want this. Let's go... now!" We hopped into the car and off we went on a journey to discover what was called "Spicy Salmon Crispy Rice". My husband's quick to think on his feet and put in a reservation and I'm thinking, ehh it's a sunday, we would be ok, no? Sure enough there were plenty of seats but we did make a reservation just in case. We got a nice cozy spot near the window and this made me realize we don't ever really dine at the U village, mostly just shop and go home or eat elsewhere. To be completely honest, I didn't even know a sushi restaurant existed here. In the back of my mind, I kept wondering what "sustainable sushi" meant but I was too shy to ask. I also enjoyed the names of their menu items as well as the cocktails. I ended up ordering a sake sangria and the hubby ordered a kyoto x jalisco. If you're unlike me and like things flavorful but less on the sweet side, you're in for a treat. I prefer my drinks sweet as a glass of moscato but the sake sangria definitely was refreshing and pretty to look at it! I also ended up ordering a glass of Sayuri nigori sake to sweeten my palate up! The vibe overall is pretty "date night friendly" during the evening with candlelit ambience. Okay enough of the blabber, let's talk about the food! We ordered the Spicy Salmon Crispy Rice, NW Philly roll, scallop nigiri w/ the yakumi, Rivers & Streams roll, Hoki Poki Box, and of course my husband had to be a weirdo and order something not sushi at a sushi restaurant. He ordered the bamboo burger! But before you second guess yourself, we were quite surprised with the size of the wagyu beef and it was pretty dang delicious. Definitely 5 stars for food. But what about service? I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant where the servers are quite attentive, we got everything we needed, even got a visit from the assistant manager, David! Poor guy, he got pop quizzed by my husband on what "sustainable sushi" means and David did an amazing job of teaching us what Bamboo is known for, what their mission is, and to top it off, he definitely won me over on my new favorite sushi restaurant in Seattle. After the yelp event I knew I needed to come back. So made a date night of it. I am so happy we did. We got there early so there was no wait. It was happy hour so we got a large bottle of house sake(very mild and not to strong for a house sake you can tell they don't use a cheap sake). Our waitress explained the special with miso soup, mushroom and chicken karaage, edamame and a mix of Nigiri and Sashimi. We decided to get this and the ocean farmer roll. We where not disappointed. Soup was wonderful and the mushroom karaage was an amazing surprise. I have never had it and I cant stop thinking about getting more. I do wish the edamame had more salt but thats a minor point. Idk who hired the chefs here, but I'm so sorry to say, I didn't even take a picture of the sushi because it was so ugly and loose it practically was falling out the roll, flavorless. To my friends restaurant week menu which they forgot his rolls....his short rib was chewier than chewy, then to top it off the desert they presented was not what was on the restaurant week menu....and just gave him 3 scoops of ice cream. Didn't even mention that they ran out or anything. Now to the waiter who served us.....greeted us quickly and took our order quickly...my arms were getting stuck to the table because nobody cleaned it previously, and had to ask someone to clean it. Then 2 other people dropped by the food, but we had to ask for everything.....like to the soy sauce to our sushi....and again for ginger and wasabi. Even after ALL THAT. I heard more sorry in one meal than I've had to say all month....but nothing was done or fixed. The meal with tip was around $150 and for that price I could of gotten better food and service elsewhere. The ambiance and service took a hit because I think I had a bit of an odd experience. The issue came when I had no server assigned it seemed, eventually the people at the sushi bar just took my order and flagged down a server to get me some water. Please review your bill closely. They add the tipping option AFTER the taxes are applied to your order which results in an unnecessarily larger tip amount. I gave feedback to the management that they need to update their billing software so that you are only tipping the pre-tax amount. The ambiance felt routine like any other sushi place. The menu selection could be more robust. The service could be better too. My wife received her meal and finished it before I got mine so we both were not dining in sync with each other.
