New review: went here for lunch with a few friends. My friends had the lunch specials while I had my favourite. The food was amazing and the service was better than last time! If they keep this up we will keep coming more and I recommend the lunch specials! Good for price and taste!! We always go here for dinner and late night food. This time around we were getting really bad service and the server forgot our drinks and never came by to check on us. My friend's food came 30 mins after ours which meant we were finished by the time he started his. Yes, finally they are open! I salivated on the sidewalk when this place was under renovation, only to open as the famed Banana Leaf. I lived down on Davie, so walked past this place for some time, in the mornings and after work. Finally we made it here tonight, after our favourite PHO place, just down the street was too full to seat us. I had currey chicken with vegetables, she had the lamb shank. The lamb shank was something SERIOUS. I love lamb, and couldn't get enough of this meat falling off the bone shizz... Woah! 5 dollar pint of 1516 quenched me, while she had a glass of Pino, which was ice cold... so refreshing after a day of solemn financial markets!! Who cares? I've got my succulent curry! My ice cold beer! It's Friday evening, and what better place to take my date than BANANA LEAF! read more

I recently went to the Banana Leaf after being up for 24 hours. I was in a daze, in a new country for the first time, and was starving. I only went in because I saw food being served in a pineapple and I had to have it. I'm glad I went in. My pineapple fried rice was amazing. Service was great. We went to the Davie location yesterday evening for dinner. Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience. Firstly, the portion sizes are ridiculously small for the prices. A 1.5 cup serving of noodles should not cost $18. Secondly, for our mee goreng order, we asked them to omit the beef and add extra shrimp instead. Our order had total of 5 tiny shrimps. When we asked the server, he said the kitchen forgot and brought us 4 extra steamed shrimp (we had already finished the noodles by then...). Thirdly, they gave us the wrong dish: we ordered tiger prawns sambal and they brought us mango chili basil tiger prawns instead. We knew right away as our dish was not supposed to have any mango in it. When we told the server, they admitted that they punched in the wrong dish in the system. They wanted to take back the dish but we told them that by the time they make the correct order, we would have finished our meal by then. One server agreed to remove that dish from our bill. However, when the bill came the we were charged for it. When we told the server, he seemed extremely annoyed. Overall, horrible, horrible experience. The service was terrible, the food was not anything special, and the prices were too high for the small portion sizes. The only good thing was the lamb curry, which was delicious but again the portion size was tiny. read more

I went to Banana Leaf for lunch because there was a poster outside showing a big plate of food including fried rice and skewers and salad and eggplants for 12.99 so I thought to give it a try. However when I ordered the advertised meal on the poster, all that came was a plate of fried rice. I thought the other stuff would come later but they never came. Then I asked the waiter where is the rest of the food and he said the lunch special was only available for weekends and I actually just ordered the rice for 12.99... Short Version: Great food with a strong cultural presence, reasonably good service. Highly recommended, especially if you aren't experienced with Malaysian cuisine. Long Version: This was one of those places we stopped in while wandering the streets, just because it looked well put together. My wife and I ordered rendang beef and I believe some sort of grilled oyster. The beef was served in the most incredible coconut sauce, and was so flavorful and tender that we were able to savor each piece long enough to definitely get our money's worth. Service was reasonable, but a bit slower than I would have liked. We ordered some specialty drinks (they were fine, but I don't think any of the beverages are worth getting excited about), and didn't get water. It took a very long time to get that water after we asked for it. After eating we had to wonder if we still had a server, as no one volunteered to bring a check. The food more than made up for it, and I still highly recommend this place- just realize that it isn't somewhere to stop in if you're in a hurry. As a said note, after getting back home I tried my hand at making my own rendang beef, which will need quite a bit of practice on my part. But I always have a special place for restaurants that can inspire me to try figuring out a new flavor in the kitchen. I hope we have the opportunity to try the other items on their menu someday. read more

Affordable and absolutely delicious. The very best of the southeast Asian options in the west end - that I am aware of, anyway. I'm a little weirded out by the bizarre pictures on the menu of actors playing delighted customers - this seems tacky for an otherwise nice place. But the food more than makes up for it. Dazzled by the picture-laden menu amd enjoying our fruit-filled Sunday special sangrias, we were excited for our Malaysian meals. They did not disappoint, an especially bright spot being the shrimp and vegetables (green beans, okra, eggplant). The sauce was worth the price of admission alone. Subtracting one star for service - in a party of two, one dish arrived 5-7 minutes before the other. Not particularly bad, but a bit awkward. Otherwise, experience was very pleasant. I've enjoyed many of their delicious creations, but this was my first time at this location. Oh yes, the delicious roti with even more delicious curry dip! Spring rolls are pretty good too! My assam curry tofu with vegetables and coconut rice did a great job on clearing up my nasal pathways and satisfying my palate. A bit of jasmine tea and I'm good to go... Atmosphere was very inviting, clean table and simple decoration with warm color choices. Light was dim and perfect to let me relax after a long fat competing. It was a moment of paradise after being rained on and shivering for nearly 12 hours and surviving off of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches snd protein shakes. Oh. My. Gosh. My tongue has tasted so many mingling ginger, spices, and sweetness - I never got tired of each bite! We got the 8 course meal for $25 and so glad we had a chance to taste so many dishes. They were so accommodating for a friend who cannot have gluten, and menu was readily available and modified. I was too busy taking note of each dishes, but every protein (sea food, meat, and veggies) were consumed which will fuel me efficiently for tomorrow's final race. My favorite was soft and moist calamari. It's always been too dry and oily for my taste, but this place changed my mind. And the peanut sauce and succulent chicken was eaten in somber silence as we could not talk. It was mutually agreed it was the best thing we've all tasted today. Every vegetable cooked or raw was fresh, and lightly flavored so I could enjoy the delicate flavors. Fish and meat was little more heavily spiced but it was very tender and juicy. People of every dietary need and cultural background can congregate and leave satisfied, and frankly I would not mind returning here next day before six hour drive back to Portland - because I'll miss this place dearly. One of the best meals we had in Vancouver. Kid-friendly restaurant with baby plates. Roti canai had a wonderful, sweet chewy aftertaste. I got the Hainan Chicken lunch special. I was a little concerned when I read reviews saying that the Hainan chicken didn't come with rice, but my lunch special had chicken, rice and soup so I was a happy camper. I compare all Hainan Chicken to Savoy's version (LA restaurant) and usually places fall short. However, Banana Leaf's was comparable, though its strength is not in its chicken or sauces but in the rice, which was incredibly flavorful: sticky with a nice firm density, garlicky, and tasting like chicken broth. Washed down the food with a refreshing calamansi with honey drink - first time having it and enjoyed it. My husband loved his Mee Goreng and is now on the hunt for an excellent rendition of Mee Goreng in the LA area. Only thing was I went to the bathroom before the food arrived, and one of the toilets was really foul, like someone dropped a massive, splashy deuce and was too proud to flush. I cannot imagine how anyone could not give this place a five star rating, at least based on the food. I found it by chance when I was visiting BC, and I just liked the name. Upon further investigation, I found the menu made me salivate, and once I went inside and tasted their food, I was a goner. It is now the first restaurant I visit when traveling to Vancouver. I have never been disappointed with anything on the menu. This last visit, my friend had the Rendang Beef Curry, and I had the Halibut, which is not currently on their online menu. My friend said she woke up the next morning fantasizing about the taste of the beef curry in her mouth, tender and savory. Me, I was happy with my halibut, but forced to eat anything on their menu, I would be in heaven. Apparently there are other locations, and I have only tried this one, but it is a keeper! read more

We went here for a quick lunch. The heating wasn't working which was a nuisance at the end of December but the service was adequate. The lunch special was extremely stingy. A piece and a half of the beef was a tad bit insulting although the presentation was appetizing and food was good it was nothing special. Walked pass this place on our (me and my BF) way to breakfast before going up Grouse Mountain, looked at the menu, and decided that this place will be the place we go for my last dinner experience in Vancouver. I must say that we were not disappointed at all. The ambiance and decor was great! We got sat right away but a few minutes later, the place started to fill up. So, I'm a vegetarian; and I like Asian food. This should let you know, my kind readers if my opinion matters to your world view. Plus, I've never eaten Malaysian food before. Plenty of Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian (the best in Amsterdam) and tried about every cuisine I could around the world. What I tried here was the staple of fried tofu and a spring roll and something called Assam curry vegetable. All of it was good and reminiscent of neighboring countries' cuisine. I don't think anything blew me away but I know I've only scratched the surface. The service was slow and the place was packed. ONLY four stars because their very limited vegetarian options did not blow my mind, BUT their drinks did and the kiddie and hubz loved their lamb, chicken etc. A delightful roti canai and vegetarian spring rolls , chicken satay started our meals followed by pineapple fried rice, steamed rice, Kari ayam, Lamb curry . Oh and quite a few drinks of Dragon's eyes Martinis and singapore slings! Those two were DIVINE! attentive service and seriously good food. One word: Wow. My girlfriend and I came here while visiting Vancouver, it is very nice inside! I got the lychee mojito and it was probably one of the best mixed drinks ive ever had. On top of that we had the raita and the lettuce wraps to start and both were so delicious. The raita came with a curry dip that I couldn't stop eating. For main course we got the beef redong and the most popular noodle dish, i forget the name. the noodles came with beef, tofu, and shrimp and they were delicious. As for the beef redong it was honestly very tough and hard to eat. I was not very impressed and asked the waitress if it was supposed to be that tough and overcooked and she said yes. O_o! She offered to change it and we switched it for the lamb. The lamb was fantastic. We were in Vancouver on vacation looking for a nice place to spend some of canadian bills on. We hit the mark on this one. Very tasty food and attractive atmosphere. For ~30, the two of us ate (or overate) lunch till our hearts content and then had to take some to go. We had the roti appetizer- so good with the dipping sauce and nice and light and flaky. We tried the special sampler that had tons of different things including kabobs, beef, calamari, rice, fish, cucumber, mango salad, pickle, and spring roll. We also had a noodle dish with seafood. Great all around. If we lived in Vancouver, I am sure we would be back. I am sad to see there are no Banana Leafs in Seattle. I will have to start looking for some place for comparison. read more
