A very tasty and convenient little Malaysian place that we visited when we were in Vancouver - it was actually our lunch on the day we left. A welcoming but dimly lit restaurant with warm interior design and comfortable seats, the food was quick and delicious. Have been getting familiar and very appreciative of Malaysian cuisine as of late. It is pretty awesome food you know. This restaurant along with the others in this small chain are spot on. Had the lunch sampler today which included Roti with a special sauce, eggplant fries, satay with peanut sauce, rice, broccoli, calamari, fish in coconut, beef, and vegetable. Also had the Singapore noodle which comes with fish and octopus. All very good. Service was fast. Only thing really annoying were the two on call doctors eating a cross the aisle from us who took about 6 phone calls during our lunch to discuss various patient issues. Seems not only wrong to discuss that in public but also annoying to everyone else there having lunch. My 2 cents anyway. I love banana leaf Kung pow chicken. But not from the Davie St location. When I order pick up from this location I always get a tiny box of Kung pow chicken. If you go to the location on Denman you get almost 3 times the amount of Kung pow chicken in a large takeout box. I order from Denman usually but sometimes stop by the one on Davie location as it is on my way home and I'm always disappointed at the portion size as it's quite the expensive dish at $20 for a single meal, whereas with the Denman location I can make about three meals out of their dish read more

Such great food! Came by here pretty late - FYI (and this is probably standard for most restaurants) kitchen closes 30 minutes to listed closing. Great late night happy hour and good size portions. I think the options on the happy hour could be better so not great for a full on dinner. We ordered the pork ribs and beef skewers (not on happy hour) with a seafood noodle dish. Also ordered an iced coffee and it was great. Strong coffee, very sweet, great portion. Highly recommend coming by! read more

Took SkyTrain to Yaletown station, then walked to the restaurant. It has an attractive decor & includes a full service bar. It has been a few years since I dined at their W. Broadway location so my memory of it may have faded a bit. However, this location seems slightly more upscale. The menu reflects the Chinese, Indian, & Malay influences on Malaysian cuisine We ordered...Fish Panggang in a Banana Leaf, Roti, Sambal Chili Okra & Mixed Vegetables, & rice. Rice is extra. The main dishes had fresh ingredients & plenty of spice. I liked all the food although the fish seemed to have just a bit too much white pepper, & the Sambal a bit too much salt. The portions were so generous we did not finish & took the leftovers home. When we re-heated them at home we diluted the dishes with more veggies. Even more delicious! Be aware that this place bribes reviewers by offering discount coupons for future meals, so I suggest removing a star right there. We came inside and I felt I was in a sauna. Not because it was particularly warm, but there was a wet musty wood smell to the place. This maybe due to being there just after the rainy season-November to May in Vancouver, I'm told-had ended. There were definitely some stern signs about how to deal with a wet umbrella by the door but this restaurant was alone in the musty smell category. I ordered the salad wrap, unfortunately without discussing my gluten free status with the server, a handsome and helpful fellow. My companion ordered the Kung Pow chicken and seemed happy enough with it. It was a special for the day we were there. Although salad wraps are usually reliable choices for gluten-free eating, unfortunately the filling for the salad wraps came to the table in an edible wheat based salad bowl. As I've indicated I blame myself for that. If I had spoken to the server first, this could have all been avoided. So I ate it anyway avoiding the wheat basket as best I could. It was okay. I had a lovely green tea and a tiny smidgen of dessert. They were each $3 and I would come by in late afternoon again just for these two. The dessert was was jelled but creamy and tasty without being cloyingly sweet like so many Asian desserts are. It had a delicious mango sauce that was full of flavour. I lived in Singapore for 4 months and I'm half Singaporean, so I'm pretty sure I can say I know what Singaporean food should be like. Banana Leaf isn't authentic Singapore/Malaysian food, but the waiter did mention it was more of a fusion with Thai food. Food isn't bad, a bit pricey though. If you want an idea of how Singaporean/Malaysian food tastes like, I guess it's an idea of what it is, but not even close to being authentic. Service was good though! The worst food, no taste, no quality, awful service and I got sick right after them with throughing out all night, the food the gave. I came on April 6th 2019 at 8:52pm and wanted to get to go food and two waiters who were working told me that I could not eat there or order food to go 40 minutes before they closed. No if, and, or buts....the kitchen is CLOSED at 8:52pm. I do not appreciate that their website says they close at 9:30pm... It does not make any sense that their website would say 9:30pm when they stop serving food at 8:50pm. I just wanted to make sure all future customers know don't come if you can't make it by that time. read more

Not my favorite Banana Leaf. But it was passable. The service was... interesting. I kept getting ignored and it wasn't even busy, I guess the server had more interesting things to do than serve but ah well. The food I did like though. Their curry laksa was very good lots of seafood and ingredients but the strengh or deepness of the broth wasn't that great (I'm a tough critic on this dish because my mother makes the best laksa). The mee goreng is really nice, once again the portion size was good (it was $13) and the flavors for this dish was spot on. I liked the variety of ingredients, lots of veggies, metas and seafood and made it really nice and well-rounded. I tried their Guava Tini, sounds nice but in all honesty it wasn't that great (I'm a bartender so I'm picky). Whenever I go out I usual get something people can't mess up, but was feeling a bit adventurous. The guava was there but it was muddled with other flavors and smells which was a bit off. I would've preferred it only be guava juice and booze. Food is really good here, will definitely be back. Not a big fan of the drinks and the service needs some help, although it was probably only that one server, I've never had a bad experience before. read more

I really like Banana Leaf and their menu. It is full of Malay spices and the culinary influences are out of this world. The Roti Canai and the curry boneless chicken are my favourites here. The pineapple/seafood fried rice are a nice addition. Make sure you get the vegetable spring rolls. Amazing. The service here is pretty good. It's not the best in the city, they are moderately attentive.....I can deal with it. I am really excited that Banana Leaf has opened on Davie. The street is all the better because of it! HOLY SHWIT, I can't say enough about this spot. Their curries--perection. Their portion sizes--ouch, I still hurt hours later and I have leftovers. Their staff--I would work here, despite the crazy busy scenes (OK, I envy your veracity, I would bend). The vibe--just right. The Tofu Goreng appetizer is the length of my arm and I would eat ten of them if I could...but I'm still in pain. The Assam Curry is just the most delicious coconut based curry I've had on the west coast. $3.50 for a pint on a Monday, goes down real well with the tastiest green beans in Vancouver. Great food here, seriously good food. Complex flavours and textures, beautifully prepared, but the service today sucked. Absolutely brutal. Where is our server? She has been absent ,apathetic bordering on rude. The food we ordered was all vegetarian, and thoroughly delicious. We had the vegetarian spring rolls which were in a wrapper unlike any I have ever had, Crispslightly denser than a normal spring roll but infinitely more delicious. I also ordered the tofu goren , which was much larger than I expected as you can see in the photos it was beautifully presented. The sauce was slightly acidic slightly sweet and with the crushed peanuts on top and fresh vegetables, really satisfying David had the dish 10 vegetables 10 spaces that came with rice. This was not a typical curry type, in that it had much more depth and complexity of flavors, which made it very special. You kept trying to determine the spices as they were subtly blended together. The Decour inside is simple and tasteful, the only real downer at least today was the service was pretty terrible. The food more than made up for the service but it's unfortunate that the service-level it was so bad. We will definitely come again, and hope that we get a happier server who seems to care more about the customers read more

Customer always right? Wrong. I should have known it was going to be a bad experience at my local Banana Leaf when the table next to my boyfriend and I, who was seated 10min after us, got their drinks, appies and food before us! I love my Sayur Lemak. Soo much so it's the only main dish I order when dinning at this Malaysian establishment. And trust me I've dined at the location on Broadway and Denman long before the Davie St location opened. And at every location, including this one, I've enjoyed the rich, vegetarian curry with okra. So when the dish came out without okra and tasting a little different I asked the waiter if my order had been mixed up... it went downhill fast from there. The manager came out and told me that every chef makes it different - so what I get on Monday for lunch won't be what I get on Saturday for dinner. I couldn't believe how the manager was talking to me! The waiter didn't come back to our table for the rest of our meal and we had to flag down another server to get out bill. It was pathetic. Strictly on service alone, we will not be returning to this banana leaf! read more

My husband and I were on vacation from Oregon and found this place on Yelp. There was a wait for a table late on Friday night, but it was short (maybe 15 minutes). The service was friendly and this is one of the only places in Vancouver, BC you can actually get a dark beer. There are also all manner of other drink choices. The spring rolls and the chicken satay were both very yummy! Everything else was equally amazing. Packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. I had the Rendang Beef Curry and it blew my mind. We'll go back for sure next time we are in town... maybe for every meal. read more

I've been a long-time customer of the Banana Leaf chain and overall they have great food and great service. With this in mind, my husband and I did not think twice about where to eat, when we discovered this location while walking down Davie street. We have dined at both of the Broadway locations several times and have always left happy and satisfied. Right off the bat we noticed that the server seemed uninterested and unpleasant, it felt as though we were an inconvenience to him - it was around 8pm and the restaurant was not very busy. Regardless, we proceeded to order our food, which arrived shortly after. The satay tasted great, but we both noticed that the roti canai did not quite hit the mark - the roti was great but the curry dipping sauce tasted bland and seemed watered down. For the entree portion I had the boneless chicken curry and I was yet again disappointed, it also lacked seasoning. Needless to say this was not a great experience. We will be going back to Banana Leaf, but it is unlikely that we will return to this location. read more

Not great or authentic Malaysian or Singaporean cuisine. Curry was just not right, Hainan chicken was ok, Char Kuey Teow was too wet, Sambal Okra, eggplant and green beans wastoo oily. The point is that the chef just deep fried the vegetables first to save time instead of stir fire it. May be that's always the problem of chain restaurant. This location has stepped up its game. I'd been once before a couple years ago because I was too lazy to walk all the way to the Denman location, and it was just so-so. I went here a couple weeks ago with some friends, and their food was on-par or maybe even better than Denman's. I got the Kung Pow Chicken with steamed coconut rice. We also shared some roti, which was delicious. This location one-up'd Denman with their drink specials: Fridays $4 frozen Margaritas--heck yeah! And they were goooood. Possibly a hint of lychee? The reviews on Yelp seemed enticing and I was craving some good Malaysian food, so I came here because it was near my hotel. The decor and service was nice and efficient. Pricing was a bit too high IMO (and I live in NYC, and based on various places I went to on Davie St) I had beef rendang, and roti canai. The rendang was under-seasoned and the curry too thin. The beef was of good quality but could have been more tender. The curry for the roti was also too watered-down and bland. The roti pancakes were nice but much thicker and heavier than most other Malaysian places I went to. I suspect that this place suffers from the "non-authentic" disease like many Asian restaurants where the recipes are toned down or modified to suit the palate of the local customers. I don't mean to be elitist but authenticity trumps everything else in my book when the place advertises itself as an ethnic "authentic" cuisine. I probably will not go back. read more

More like three and a half stars, but there were some definite highlights. Went for lunch the other day, and we ordered the Hainan chicken and the big lunch special along with a side of roti canai. The roti canai was one of the best I've ever had here, and the curry dipping sauce was a perfect balance with great flavour, consistenty, texture and very slight heat. The lunch special was beef rendang, rice, roti canai and a side salad. All quite good, the beef was a tad dry, but it was also late in the lunch time slot. The roti was same as the side, though a smaller portion. A sizable lunch for a very good price ($8 if i recall correctly). The Hainan chicken was presented with the three sauces as well as a soup and coconut rice. It was very good, but I've had better hainanese chicken here. Good size portion for very reasonable $11. Decent beer and wine list with reasonable prices, very good service from our water. Fruit flies were a significant issue, to the point where we had to stop eating to bat away at them and they were all over the food and our wine. Our waiter assured us that it was temporary and not usual and they weren't sure what caused the infestation. I would eat there again - they have a tasting menu for lunch as well as dinner which would allow one to try a wide variety of dishes, but bring your appetite. Needed a little more sugar in the sambal prawn dish. Singapore laksa egg noodles were a little too well done for my taste. The proportion of egg noodles to seafood content was off) Food presentation: 3.5-4 stars (clean and simple for the most part) Service: 4.5 stars (very attentive and i never had to repeat any requests, they could earn a full 5 stars if they smiled more and ask "how is everything tasting" - what I'm use to in the United States. Went here for dinner and ordered the chicken murtabak, malaysian spicy papaya seafood soup, gulai seafood and hainanese chicken. Enjoyed the gulai seafood with ample shrimp, fish, mussel, squid/calamari and hainanese chicken ( although it didn't come with the rice). If you aren't familiar, gulai is quite similar to thai's green curry. Portions are huge compared to Bay Area's. Service: attentive and friendly Better come early for dinner on weekends and before 2pm for lunch. They have tasting menu and Prix Fixe Menu. I got to the restaurant late so I felt a little pressured to get the hell out. The servers were still very polite. Unfortunately I went there specifically for mango-sticky rice which they ran out of. I had the mango-papaya salad which was very sweet, almost too sweet. The fish in banana leaf was tasty but the pineapple fried rice was quite bland with very little seafood. So I gave them a star for service, a star for ambiance and a star for the fish. I couldn't in all honesty give it 4-stars because I've had better and it's quite expensive. For an appetizer, a rice and a meat dish it was $50 before tip. Pricey! read more

Love love love this place. We had been going to either the Denman or Broadway locations, and since it opened on Davie, our dinner choices on Davie have gotten tremendously better. I recommend trying the sole fillet dish for $12; such a good deal, and I always leave with leftovers. Also, you can't go without having the roti and the spring rolls. read more

Wow - I love this place! I came for the lunch menu for my boyfriend's birthday, and we left feeling extremely satisfied. The food quality is high, and very delicious. They have a wide variety of spicy and mild food options, as well as vegetarian or meat lovers! I had the lettuce wraps and they were AMAZING!!! The service was quick and friendly, the decor was beautiful, and the overall atmosphere was great. I can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!
