Super fresh catch pan-seared to perfection in a flavorful light broth
    Tamoghna B.

Of all the amazing restaurants we had the privilege of experiencing in YVR, this was the one that took me by surprise the most. We ordered the mussels in a very Thai-inspired broth and it turned out to be quite good. But the one dish that deserves special mention is the black cod (sablefish) that we paired with a side of jasmine rice. Most of the seafood we've had on our trip has been very good but the freshness and flavor of this piece of fish was noteworthy. They served a near perfect pan-seared steak in a light Malaysian broth with broccoli and green peppers that were just enough crunchy to complement the creaminess of the fish. The staff was quite friendly and checked in regularly to see how we were doing. Great experience overall!

Food was all very good! I recommend the caramelized ginger fish fillet! I also really loved the pandan coconut panna cotta. Service was good too, they came by the table to check in once in a while.

Haven't been here for a long time, finally had the chance to swing by and left stuffed like a turkey. The ribs were tender and packed a punch of flavour. You can't go wrong with the pineapple fried rice and roti. Everything was as good as I remembered it to be years ago. The servers were attentive and fast. Slightly dim lighting during dinner time.

We got the fish , pork dish and curry. Soo good. Oh yea also had the coconut rice. My only complaint was how small the bathroom was. The food and service was excellent.

Loved this place - - I don't usually visit the same place twice when traveling, but my wife demanded we return. The first night we got the turmeric, coconut, spinach, and curry meat, the second time around we got the chicken and vegetables and the lamb. Everything was great we even finished off with some mango sticky rice and the coconut Panna cotta. I can't say enough good.

Lunch special courses 5&6 of the 7 course sampler
    Erika R.

Walked by this place while staying in a hotel not too far off Davie street. Our server was great, really knew the menu and the area well. There were seven of us and I think half of us got the 7 course lunch sampler. You can't beat this special for the price and variety of food you get. The salads, roti and satay came out right away. I have never had roti before but others that have said it was the best they'd ever had. Our server almost on queue came out and asked if we wanted me roti sauce just as we ran out. The satay was done well, juicy and the seasoning and marinade were delicious. The remaining four courses were phenomenal, a meat dish and fish dish and then dessert. The fish was amazing, none of us could get enough! The marinade was a sweat sesame style and the fish was cooked well, tasted very fresh. Our server checked on us throughout of our filling our water and we had some great conversations with him throughout our meal. If we're back in the area for another trip in the future we will definitely be back for lunch.

The food and service were both good. The interior decor was interesting and gave an exotic vibe.

12-Course Tasting - Tom Yum Soup with shrimp and mushrooms
    Peter M.

On my last evening in Vancouver, I had my GPS coordinates set on Banana Leaf, a Malaysian restaurant, as the destination for dinner. The main reason for choosing this eatery was that it serves tasting menus and I was eyeing the top offering: the chef's 12-course degustation menu for the evening. There are 4 locations, and we visited the Davie branch because it was the closest to our hotel. Let the games begin. We were informed that the appetizers would come first, and once we were done with them, the main dishes would appear. First came out an Asian salad with pineapple & papaya and tom yum soup with mushrooms & prawns. Then crispy shrimp wontons and nyonya crispy calamari (unfortunately not crisp). This was immediately followed by satay lamb skewers and roti canai. After most of this was consumed, came the main dishes. Singapore chili lobster tails, caramelized ginger fish fillet and rendang beef curry. Also a vegetable dish containing sambal okra, eggplants & green beans and pineapple seafood chicken fried rice. For dessert it was pisang goreng (fried bananas) with vanilla ice cream. I have to admit that all the dishes were well prepared. One better than the other. The salad with pineapple was succulent and refreshing (however, I did not taste any papaya), while the Tom yum soup had a unique tomato base which was a first. Lamb satay was superb, shrimp wontons plump, beef rendang tender with dense flavor, fish tasty and the fried rice, with well balanced taste and textures. However, the major disappointment of the evening was the lobster tails. They were fried with batter to a crisp, difficult to bite into, and hardly had any meat. When asked how the dinner was going, I brought the matter up with one of the servers. She lacked empathy and was curt, stating that they only use small lobster tails. I told her that was fine, but there should be at least some meat on the tail. It is my feeling that this item should be removed from the high end presentation, if it cannot live up to its description. This restaurant brand also serves alternatives : a 7- course and 10-course tasting menus. Finally, if they had patience and brought out the dishes one by one, it would provide a better, relaxed, distinct and more memorable dining experience.

    Laksa

Yup, I went back for another bowl of laksa, and I can confirm that it is still excellent!

Food here was great! Came here at the odd hour of 4pm for a late lunch/early dinner. My group had the seafood pho(?), fried calamari, and Laksa. Overall the food was great. Just be wary when ordering the noodle soups; serving size is huge! I came in ravenous and was able to finish it, but on a normal day I would have definitely saved the other half for home. This was a great early dinner/late lunch experience with good food. Restaurant was wide open and spacious and also looked fairly new. Definitely would come back next time I'm in town.

Pretty good Hainan chicken. Boneless which was nice. Went for lunch and seated right away. Attentive staff.

DoorDash dinner delivery was quick. The wontons were tasty, the Mee Goreng was ok. The panna cotta was delicious. Maybe some of the other entrees would have been a better choice.

Yummy authentic dishes. Great happy hour: I couldn't decide what to pick. They have a tasting menu.

It made me curious to try Singaporean food for myself, and I'm glad I did! The restaurant was clean, the staff were friendly, and the service was great. I tried a couple dishes and everything was so tasty. One of the highlights was the Hainan Chicken Rice. I kept hearing about this favourite dish so finally I tried it. My friend, who had eaten it in Singapore, said it was very authentic, which was great to hear. I also tried one of the soups and really enjoyed it. The portions were reasonable, and I thought the quality of the food matched the price. It was also fun trying flavours and dishes that were a little different from the Asian foods I usually eat. If you want to try Singapore hawker-style food or simply want to try something different, Singapore Hawker is definitely worth a visit. I'll be back for sure!

All the dishes were good not exactly like one would get at Singapore but really close. The best dish of the night would be the Curry Beef. The beef was extremely soft and tender. I would return to this no frill restaurant to try the two dishes that were not available.

If you have ever had Peranakan food in Singapore and wish there is a place selling it in Vancouver,…read morelook no further. Bibik's is a true blue authentic Peranakan pop up kitchen. Unfortunately it is not a full fledged restaurant (Covid has scuttled the plan) but luckily we can still get to have our Nonya food fix via the commissary kitchen. The challenge is actually placing an order. It is a pre-ordering system where you have to stalk their IG account. The call to order is usually on Sunday and you place the order online and make payment. Then you wait a week for the pick up at YVR Prep on Saturday (90 mins window). I am lucky to get my order in as it sells out very quickly. They have a limited quantity per week. It is usually 3 items which are available each week (appetizer/snack/dessert, entree and a drink) I think I have tried almost all the dishes they offer over the months. Everything is good. My absolute favorite is the Mee Siam. I liken it to Violet Oon (or typical Bibik household) standard in Singapore. You could taste the spices in the rempah. The aromatic is more pronounced. I just feel there is pride in the dishes made, to introduce what real Peranakan food is. For me that is really Singapore food, food that I miss. Now if only there is Ayam buah keluak too, that will make my life complete. Haha. I also wish for itek tim, hee peow soup and Babi pongteh. I was so glad I managed to try the Tok Panjang which was available during the holidays. That was really a feast with plenty of dishes -- itek sio, sambal prawns, chap chye, ngoh hiang, achar, pulot hitam and the nonya Kuehs. I love the design and packaging too. It is all very simple yet pretty and great care has been taken in the products. They are very friendly too. Follow their IG if you have a hankering for Singapore food. They usually post pictures of Singapore and the food. But that may not be a great idea now since traveling is restricted and it may make the cravings even worse.

Pickup was easy from their commissary kitchen. As you can see in the photo, the portions are very generous and it was very flavourful! There are actually a lot of prawns hidden under the fried egg, arranged artfully in a spiral. The fried egg was perfectly cooked with a soft runny yolk (just the way I like it!) Apparently they sell out very fast so if you want to order, best to do so on their instagram on the day the release the menu for the week. Only comment I have is I wish it was hotter as I picked it up during lunch hour and brought it home immediately to eat. I was too hungry this time, but next time I'd probably heat it up more. Still delicious lukewarm!
