In my experience, the best fish and chips comes from a small, family run joint next to the ocean that operates on a shoestring budget, and has lines that stretch down the block. There are notable exceptions like Barrel Mountain Brewing and Kells Irish Pub (look them up if you are in Oregon or Washington). Bandon Bait, true to its name, also sells bait and tackle, and the first time I drove past, it sported a line that ran the length of the building. I have reviewed fish and chips at many restaurants over the years, so I have a lot to compare these with. So, here goes. First, the breading has an herbal flavor, and is delicate without being self-unwrapping. It stays on, which is good. The fish is fresh, and cooked properly. I tend to favor battered fish, as opposed to breaded, though. Still, while it is not my favorite on the Oregon Coast, it has a lot going for it. I'm comparing these fish and chips to the results of a 30 year quest to find the best ones on the Oregon Coast, so not all of them are going to knock my socks off, but that doesn't mean that they are not excellent. They give a little dish of bay shrimp cocktail with each serving. That was nice. My wife had the prawns, and she liked them while remarking that the dill pickle in the cocktail sauce was strange, but seemed to be okay. The fries were shoestring, and got cold quickly in the prevailing gales that buffeted the outdoor tables. I have long hair, and it really wanted to join the clam chowder on the spoon, but that was the appetizer, and will be addressed soon. Back to the fries. They were okay. They had a seasoned salt of unknown origin on them that was pleasant. The chowder was above average. The portion was decent, and it wasn't too thin. It tasted nice, but had an unadventurous flavor. It's the kind you want when you have been disappointed by a previous chowder, and just need something familiar. It tastes good, but not ecstatically good. All in all, it was a serviceable meal. Don't let the mild criticisms lead you to think I was disappointed, or would not recommend stopping in. Just because something is not the best, it doesn't mean that it's not delicious. read more

After spending over a week looking for great fish and chips in London, we were enormously pleased to come across Bandon Bait back in our own home state and country. This is more of a 'takeaway' or sit at their outdoor tables location. There is no indoor seating, so if the weather is foul, bear that in mind. The food, however, is absolutely top-notch. We ordered both the large fish and chips as well as the shrimp and chips options. Both orders same with not only amazing sauces, but also delicious cole slaw and a cup of bay shrimp. Don't miss out on those, as they are both excellent additional that come with the meal. The batter on these fried goodies are just perfect. Nice crisp layer with excellent light texture. Don't bother with a small order...go for the large, as you'll otherwise be craving more. Now look, one of the bigger challenges with fish and chips is delivering on the chips part of the equation. How often do you order this standard and the fries are just sorta meh? Not here! All ashore going ashore! If you're looking for tasty fish & chips, Bandon Bait is a must! Let's start with the man with piercing blue eyes who will take your order. He's super nice, and is happy to recommend items from their menu. The menu has a variety of items from shrimp, to frog legs. All can be fried/come fried. We both ordered the fish n chips. The fish is freshly caught, and is flaky, tasty, and just yum. The fish definitely could've used some seasoning, or a little bit more seasoning. The crust is more of a cornmeal, and I'm still that deep fried kind of girl. It was still very tasty. To the point that while I asked for extra tartar sauce, it really did not need it. I did ask for some malt vinegar which is not the norm for this location, and I was given packets of Heinz mulch vinegar. Not a great product to begin with, and I definitely did not help with the fish experience Once you order at the counter, you go grab your own seat, wherever you can find one, and they will find you and bring you your food. The foods reasonably priced, generous servings, and you'll see why they are always busy. Always. Now you may be asking yourself about the bait part of this location... Since they're literally right by the water, people do come in and purchase bait and other things and go fishing themselves. It just works. Parking is free, but definitely you need to be patient when looking for it. I am always so impressed by the food at Bandon Bait! I do also go there to get my crabbing license and bait but the food is where it's at. It's so convenient to have both at one location right by the dock. On this visit, I ordered the fish and chips which were amazing! The local black rock cod tasted like it was caught that morning. It was fried in the lightest batter that had the best spices. I dipped it in their house Tartar sauce and it was *chef's kiss*. They even include a little container of yummy bay shrimp. They have outdoor picnic tables where you can eat in the sun and gaze at the water. A great stop for a quick lunch! We visited a few times while crabbing in Bandon and what I really appreciated is that they took my partner's shellfish allergy very seriously. What a treasure. I went to Bandon, OR for a family gathering. They brought us here for fish and chips. Serious kudos to the 1 women running the entire operation. Taking food orders, cooking, and the cashier for the actual bait shop. She was polite, helpful, and surprisingly quick considering she was doing it all alone. I decided on the local rockfish and chips. It came with at least 3 nice sized pieces that were perfectly cooked and flavorful, a side of bay shrimps with their stellar cocktail sauce, and tarter sauce that was clearly homemade.
