If I could put half a star, I would. Horrible service, outrageous prices, and an unnerving setting. Spent the first thirty minutes waiting to be acknowledged and addressed. And another forty minutes for mediocre food. The servers were easily the worst part of the entire experience. They acted irritated that we were even there, barely acknowledged us, rolled their eyes, disappeared for long stretches of time, and responded to simple questions with nothing but attitude. Every interaction felt rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. It was honestly disgusting watching people in a service job treat paying customers like an inconvenience. My dad had come here previously and has been talking nonstop about how good the fish and chips were. We came in on a whim, midday on Saturday. They were pretty busy but they have lots of seating options and we were able to find a spot right away. As we came in one of the two waitresses said hello, told us to sit wherever and let us know the new menus were at the table under the glass. The menu was clear, straightforward and had options for half orders which I super appreciate! We both got ice teas, my dad ordered the fish and chips (cod) and I did the scallops. I forgot to take photos of the main dishes, we dug right in and then it wasn't pretty when remembered. The only down side to my dish was it was popcorn scallops, small and rubbery, but very common with those when they're deep fried. It all tasted amazing though! Fish and chips was insanely good. I hate tartar sauce I mixed theirs 50/50 with the cocktail sauce and it was so good! The place was clean, decorated on theme, lots of areas to sit, dog friendly out on the patio too! We stopped in while driving up 101. The boat is located on the side of the road and has little areas to sit-some inside and some out. We grabbed a table outside and were greeted quickly. Ordered some beverages and they were brought quickly. The actual meal took a bit longer-but we overheard our waitress telling someone they were short staffed. She was friendly and a great server-so no complaints. We ordered the fish and chips-one order of Cod (3 pcs) and one of Halibut (4 pcs). We also had a cup of clam chowder. Let me start with this is not our first time here. We started when the boat was actually floating in Winchester Bay and it was called Unger's. They had the absolute best Calamari on the OR coast. Unger's closed, and after a while, the boat itself was moved to it's current location in Coos Bay. The Calamari continued to be outstanding and we were frequent customers during our summer visits to the OR coast. We have missed the last two years, apparently the business was sold, and this visit was disappointing. The Calamari was inconsistent in its cooking. Some were prefect and others were chewy. More importantly, the breading has lost the flavor and spice of the old days. You used to get both chips and coleslaw standard with your order. It appears price pressure has changed to a choice of one or the other. And the coleslaw loving DW found the slaw to be too sweet. The Boat has a large sign saying it is pet friendly which is wonderful. And at least three groups took advantage of it.The downer was the wait staff who not only petted each and every dog, but then let them lick their hands. Amazing service, friendly servers, very helpful with their fish varieties and their menu, attending to customers needs properly and providing a good service and a friendly atmosphere. We ordered Pacific Cod with fries and a side of Coleslaw, no beer, just good ol' local tap water. The meal was good, plenty of fish pieces, not greasy and flavorful. I personally felt that the batter used was on the thin side. I prefer my fish with a splash of malted vinegar that literally disintegrated my fish pieces, making them too moist and not as crispy as I would have preferred. Other than that; the flavor was good and the only thing missing from a true "fishn' chips" was the newspaper. Just kidding.... What a great experience! Nice ambience sitting outside in the sunshine, protected from the breeze. Food was delicious, Pacific cod, clam chowder and shrimp basket. The cheese bread was flavorful and delicious, enough for a family to share. Cole slaw was fresh and crunchy. The best part was the top notch service from Trevor!! Chose this spot due to being dog friendly. The yelp reviews had me a little worried but our experience was great! For the first 20-30 min we were there, there was only one guy working the floor and register. He was covering the main dining room, the side room, and the outdoor patio where we were sitting - at least 8 tables in between the three. Considering how much he was taking care of, he was doing an awesome job. Mozzarella sticks came out pretty quickly and were devoured by our ravenous crew. They were ok - just kind of generic mozz sticks. In two of the five sticks, the cheese had leaked out during the frying process, leaving a hollow shell of breadcrumbs. The rest of the food came out soon after and we dove in. Everyone was really happy with what they ordered. My son and I split two 1/2 and 1/2 platters, opting for Calamari (interesting thick pieces), popcorn shrimp (ok), scallops (pretty tasty, although fried scallops will always be inferior to sautéed in my opinion), and clam strips (the real winner with my son. I love their flavor, I just wish there had been bigger pieces or just more). My wife opted for the 3 pc Pacific Cod and chips from the Minnow menu. She said it was the perfect portion for a light lunch. My vegetarian daughter ordered the grilled cheese and we were all impressed by the cook on the sandwich - see my pic - perfect golden brown from crust to crust. I almost forgot to mention the house-made cocktail and tartar sauces. Both were really good. Cocktail could probably have more horseradish, but good for a general audience. Prices were alright, considering we're in a touristy spot. 4 meals, and appetizer, four soft drinks , and a good tip ran us ~$100. Overall, the service was great and the food pretty tasty. Over the years we've eaten "on the boat" when it was floating in Salmon Harbor in Winchester Bay when it was Ungers. This new incarnation was brilliant! "Dry Docking" it and adding covered outdoor seating around it was brilliant! AND it's dog friendly! In its Coos Bay location we've enjoyed going there many times for the best fish & Chips on the coast. But this2026 visit was disappointing. They've dropped the ball.... At least this one evening. The prices have skyrocketed just like everything everywhere, but at least it's the best fish 'n chips right? Nope. Not this time. Okay it was after 7 pm, but hell, some of my fish had soggy, oily breading and others were missing areas of breading. The fries were good. My wife had the scallops & shrimp. They were good, but I was suspicious they were breaded in a factory somewhere & came out of a package from the freezer. Okay I'm a critical, but this is an old fishing boat turned into a Fish & Chips Restaurant right near the water in Coos Bay! You can't get closer to the water! Plus they serve "seafood". If they can't get it right who can? Then when the check came, our server put some gummy worms on the check holder with the bill.... Ugh. They weren't wrapped or anything. And it's cold & flu season. The Boat is a cute little restaurant with seating areas inside the "boat" itself, and on the covered patio. Seating inside is pretty sparse, but I found the patio to be comfortable even in the chilly evening as I was wearing my jacket. Larger parties may need to sit outside regardless of preference, since the interior of the restaurant is pretty narrow. And now for the food! My oyster sandwich was absolutely fantastic, but let me tell you what the real winner of that night's dinner was - the coleslaw! Hands down, the best coleslaw I've ever had in my life, and thank goodness it came in a large portion. I also ordered a strawberry lemonade, which nicely came with one refill. The clam chowder was also delicious. At the time of my visit, The Boat was a little short-staffed, but the waitresses were working HARD to make sure guests were properly attended to. I am so disappointed in this place. We went here since it had moved from the floating restaurant in Winchester bay to coos bay while traveling the Oregon coast. When we had gone to its previous location a few years ago we absolutely loved it! Do not order the shrimp melt it was horrible Kraft cheese not real tillamook cheese and don't get me started on the salad shrimp in the sandwich or Texas toast. Passing through Coos Bay and decided to stop here. It's conveniently located (which is how I found it), and the staff were great. I had the small order of the halibut and coleslaw. I loved that option because I didn't need much and am not particularly fond of fries. Halibut was crunchy and tasty even without sauce, and their tartar sauce was really good.
