Chicken Satay. Out of five pieces, three were overdone.
    David Z.

Not only were the satay overdone, the rice container was 2/3 full. Three of the five pieces overdone. I was hungry and ate the least overdone one.

Quick quarantine update: As of July 9, 2010, Bangkok Belly is still doing carry-out only. They have tables lined up inside the dining area, blocking you from going further. There are a couple of chairs for you to sit and wait on your order, along with a giant bottle of GermX hand sanitizer. Food is still fantastic, and this place is still my go-to if I'm craving some good Thai food. I recommend that you check it out.

Rice upon opening container. Not much in there, almost looks like it had been eaten out of. Way more panang curry, needed more rice.

Small portions for the price compared to other Thai spots. We ordered pad see eiw, Panang curry, shrimp shumai, and crab rangoons. Taste is decent, although the beef in the pad see eiw tasted burnt. Totally skimped on rice per volume of curry. Wondering what other, better Thai options there might be in the area.

We ordered the Fried calamari, Pad Thai with Tofu, Pad See Eiw with chicken, and the Tempura. The amount was smaller than expected but the noodles were good. The fried calamari was a little rubbery. The tempura was over fried on the shrimp and not enough on the large broccoli. I will most likely order from here again since it's in my hood but will try other things on the menu.

BYOB! Friendly staff and good food. Not great but good and it'll get the job done if you're in the hood. When recently dining here I tried both a couple maki rolls and one of their entree dishes. Sushi was fresh enough and constructed well. The main entrée we had was tasty though not overly so. All in all, decent sushi and Thai option.

Edamame, crab rangoon, potstickers and cashew chicken with rice.
    Lauren F.

Prices are great for the portions you get. The edamame was perfect and enough for leftovers. The crab rangoons were plump and tasty. The potstickers were good, nothing extraordinary, though I liked the inclusion of some spinach for freshness. For my main dish, I tried the cashew chicken from the signature entrees menu. I liked the flavor, the fresh vegetables and amount, but the chicken was mostly breading and a bit soggy from the sauce. Still good but not a lot of actual chicken. My boyfriend got the sweet and sour chicken and enjoyed it but had the same thoughts about the excess breading. Be sure to ask for chopsticks and any condiments--nothing is included with takeout.

    Reduced portions for $26.

So we opened our carry-out sushi from Bangkok Belly and immediately saw how the rolls were only 5 pieces, instead of the usual 8 pieces for sushi rolls. And we spent $26! We felt ripped off. When we order 3 rolls of sushi - Spicy Tuna, Spider Maki and Mexican maki from other sushi restaurants, they always give 8 pieces, not 5. Now we won't go back. Our favorite sushi restaurant is Nami Sushi, 7344 West Lawrence Avenue, Harwood Heights, IL. They give you 8 rolls and the quality is very good! And you will have a few leftover pieces of sushi to enjoy the next day.

I ordered takeout and it was great. The chicken pad Thai was good, the Red Curry was excellent as was the chicken satay.

I almost decided to save Miru for our next visit, but I'm glad I made time for breakfast here on our departure day. Located inside the St. Regis Chicago, the restaurant offers beautiful views. The service was excellent--attentive, friendly, and professional. I ordered the Tokyo Breakfast. The salmon was perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with rice, a soft-poached egg, and salmon roe. The miso soup was slightly salty on its own, but it worked surprisingly well when enjoyed with the rice toward the end of the meal. Overall, a memorable breakfast experience. I'd love to return and try the lunch or dinner menu on my next trip to Chicago.

It's all about the views!…read more Miru is one of the newer sushi restaurants relatively uncompetitive sushi scene in Chicago, and it hits the spots for those interested in classy ambience and jaw dropping views. The sushi is phenomenal, as were our drinks... but the other entrees are disappointing. The karaage and duck yakisoba in particular in quality could be from any corner restaurant in Chicago. The service lends itself more casual, and I noticed they were consistently quite slow to clear our table. I don't think people come here for the food as much as the views. Overlooking Streeterville from this angle and vantage was truly jaw dropping and for this reason I still strongly recommend Miru.

My only critique is the pacing. Since the chef already had the fish sliced and prepped, I expected a smoother flow, but the meal took about an hour and a half for 14 pieces of sushi. It felt a bit slow, especially for a lunch service. That said, if you're looking for a reasonably priced omakase with quality fish, this is a solid choice.

Both were great. Our bartenders were lovely and very friendly. Found out this is a Malort tasting room and we were able to sample some different Malorts (the cocoa one was good!). Then we were taken back to our table for dinner. Our server was super friendly as well. Started with the miso soup and crispy tuna bites which were probably my favorite dishes. The taki yoki fritters weren't bad either. We saw people getting omakase, so we ordered a yummy looking piece they were receiving. It was just okay (chutoro truffle). The nigiri was also okay. The tuna piece was the only I really loved. The fish quality wasn't as high as I was expecting. The sushi was decent. A little too much truffle in the spicy blue fin tuna and a little too vegetable forward in the hamachi serrano. All in all, the atmosphere and amazing service pushed this up to a 4 for me.

The restaurant houses both an omakase counter and an izakaya, but in completely separate spaces. The omakase side is an intimate, beautifully designed counter with around 10 seats. We were the only guests that evening, so the whole experience felt wonderfully private -- just us, Chef Shoji, and the fish. Chef Shoji opens the meal by presenting the actual fish you'll be eating, all flown in twice a week from Japan or Spain. It immediately signals what kind of meal you're in for. The 20 courses were well-paced and the quality was consistent throughout. Nigiri and sashimi were pristine, but the hot dishes were equally impressive, which surprised me. Both sides of the menu showed real craft and attention to detail. Service was fantastic -- warm, attentive, and never stuffy. At $210 per person, it's a special occasion meal, but one that genuinely delivers on the price. As someone who eats a lot of omakase back home in LA, I wasn't sure what to expect. I left genuinely impressed. Highly recommend if you're looking for a serious sushi experience in Chicago!!!
