To me they all seems the same -- that melt-in-your-mouth rice sheet paired with fried shallots topped with fried shrimp and sweet potatoes!! The texture is soft but still holds the rolled-shape, and it soaks up their fish sauce (nuoc mam) sauce is clean and light made in-house. Service is fast and no-nonsense (no-frills). This spot is hidden in a small plaza next to Asian Garden Mall with limited parking. The owner will sometimes come out to assist with the parking situation. They're most well known for banh cuon, which is Vietnamese rice paper, and my favorite part of the combo 1 is their fried sweet potato with shrimp. You can also get this as a single dish. I am visiting the area with a large group of friends and as the resident Vietnamese, I took it upon myself to recommend restaurants for the group to eat. We all had pho the day before so I wanted to introduce them to a dish they may or may not have tried before. I found Banh Cuon Tay Ho and saw that they also had a vegetarian/vegan "Chay" menu for myself so our group of 12 went here to eat. It is a small restaurant located right next to the Phuoc Loc Tho Mall. We waited 5 minutes and they were able to set up 3 tables of 4 to accommodate our large group. We ordered everything: Banh Cuon - both meat & veggie, Banh Xeo, Vermicelli Bowls, Bun Bo Hue, and even Banh Beo. Food came out pretty quickly and the portions were massive! Plenty of food to share and go around. Lots of fresh veggies and herbs for all the dishes were provided. For my vegan dishes, they gave me vegan Nouc Cham (fish sauce). We left full and happy! Nuoc mam (fish sauce) was lighter in flavor as was the chili paste you put in so I was making a bath for my banh cuon with it. We ordered the banh beo one time but would skip. The mung bean mixture was oddly sweet and there wasn't any dried shrimp. I usually get Dac Biet which has a little bit of everything. The sweet potato fritter can be too thick of fries clumped together so a little hard to eat. Here's a quick Vietnamese 101 lesson, although banh cuon and banh uot are ultimately the same thing, but; Banh Cuon = Rice crepes with fillings and stuffings like meat and seafood. Banh Uot= Simply just rice crepes. I have been here a few times, and they sell a variety of options but what they are really known for is banh cuon, and they have endless versions of it. Some people go for banh uot, simple rice crepes topped with bean sprouts, mint garnish and a splash of spicy sweet and tangy fish sauce. Me though? I go big or go home, I get the Banh Cuon Dac Biet Tay Ho, which is like the Big Poppa of Banh Cuon, the House Special or a sampler some would say. It comes with the simple Banh Uot, also pork and mushroom stuffed banh cuon, as well as shrimp stuffed banh cuon. It is then topped with shrimp and sweet potato tempura, a green bean tempura cake, Vietnamese leaf rolled ham and is finished with the bean sprouts, mint garnish and drizzle of fish sauce (mine is more like a mild flooding). I have a good time every time I come, but please remember, this is and old fashioned, Vietnamese, mom and pop spot. You are not going to get 5 star service but you will at least get 3 and leave with a cheap, quick, fulfilling meal. Parking is a dud here, there are two spots reserved for the restaurant, there are a few other spots but be careful some are reserved for other businesses, signs are up! This restaurant is called Banh Cuon Tay Ho 2 and it has the same name on Google Map. But the Banh Cuon Tay Ho on Yelp is called Banh Cuon Tay Ho 4 on google map. They are selling the same food and same good quality, but I like this 2 than 4. The 4 has more fashion renovation, looks like a modern restaurant. But the 2 has more ethnic feelings. Compare the menus I took photos of from both restaurants, it looks the 4 is a little more expensive-0.25 dollars for each plate. Once I'm in little Saigon, this restaurant is always an option for me as well as Hui Oi and Brodard. I like the rolled cake, especially wrapped with the tropical leaves and mixed with the sweet chili fish sauce. The rolled cake is so soft and the flavor is that good. The fried shrimp tempura with yam is also good, but don't order the whole plate since it's already included in the rolled cake set. The whole plate will be too much to bite. That is their bread and butter banh cuon nhan thit which is the rice cake with a beef mix stuffing. I also like their shrimp filling (Tom) and also the grilled pork (thit nuong)! There are only like 2 parking spots that officially belong to the restaurant so it's tough. Also it's not visible from the road! Banh Cuon Tay Ho 2, is just a remaining branch that resides next to what would be the center heart plaza of the Vietnamese Community in Southern California, Phuc Loc Tho Mall. The location has pluses and drawback. Being amongst popular shops and attractions, Banh Cuon Tay Ho retains locals and frequent visitors, by serving a familial banh cuon dish. What makes banh cuon tay ho 2 a nightmare is the parking. Its location plaza was designed by a D student in planning. Be careful of the side alley, it is a one way street. And let's be honest, too many times people disregard the sign and drive illegally through. The current vibe of this place is more attuned to an aging hole in the wall and not in a good way. They serve up a decent banh cuon, but the service needs a major overhaul. I feel they haven't acknowledge the growing foodie trend outside the Vietnamese community. Thus they failed to capitalized on the synergy for potential new clienteles. I love banh cuon, I wish I was writing this review in their golden age. I do hope that anyone who has not had banh cuon, to seek out and try it. I am giving a high rating of three stars, based solely in taking into account their past track records. They have slipped over the years and I hope constructive critics will light fires of improvements. It is a shame that they have embraced miss opportunities. Please do better.
