Total rating 3.5 Tucked in a small strip plaza adjacent from the car wash. Ordered #1 Was expecting the soup broth to be fishy however it turned out to be sour soup. Reminds me of "Canh Chua". Had to add some fish sauce found table side to adjust for my preference. Their crispy pork stands out as it is seasoned very well. I would buy by the pound if I could. All the protein toppings combined make a very unique medley. Plenty of noodles for the large bowl. Environment - casual Scent of the place lingers with Fish Sauce in the air. Packed house with local patrons. Output time - Kind of sluggish 10 minutes. Some tables didn't receive their meals at the same time. This place is known for their signature soup, anchovy, which was very good and not particularly fishing tasting. We had a couple of appetizers which were decent as well. Restaurant location is really weird. You have to get up the stairs to get to the entire plaza and there is only 1 entrance for the stairs. Restaurant is very well lit. Menu selections are decent. They are known for their Bun Mam. The entire table ordered the Bun Mam, I ordered the Banh mi bo kho and my husband ordered the shaken beef. They had a very interesting pomelo mung bean dessert. Hidden in a small plaza behind a car wash, walked in and was sat right away. Started off with their cafe sua da(coffee with condensed milk ) and rau ma(pennyworth). The coffee tasted a little off for me, couldn't put my finger on what it was , wasn't for me, and the rau ma came out blended instead of iced, which was surprising. My family and I are originally from Soc Trang, and we've been coming to this restaurant since it first opened. While we usually order takeout, we've also dined in several times and the experience has always been consistently excellent. From the bún nước lèo to the dessert (chè bưởi), everything reminds us of home. The bún nước lèo here has that distinct, stronger fish sauce aroma that's exactly like what we grew up with in Soc Trang--it's authentic and full of flavor. If you've never tried fish sauce noodle soup before and are curious, or if you're craving a truly good one, I highly recommend this place. We just returned from the city Soc Trang and had bun nuoc leo there . We were taken to the best place for the iconic noodle for this region of south Vietnam. Craving the authentic in Vietnam we came back to this restaurant. The noodle is equally delicious and authentic. Portions in the USA is bigger . That's the only difference. I have tried to come here 3x, they were never open past 5pm, who can eat dinner that early? Well after reading a few reviews, I thought maybe I'm missing something. I sent my Uber guy aka husband to get for me a Bun nuoc leo, it's their specialty I have never heard of such thing but the picture of roast pig was mouth watering. Warning right now: if you have never had bun mam, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! I smelled it right after I opened the container, OMG, I had no idea this was made w Bun Mam, my policy is never eat anything that is fermented. I worked in a big medical center and have seen too many patients w stomach cancer, my own neighbor nearly died, he lost 80lbs. One thing in common, they all ate a lot of fermented stuffs, like kim chee, all the fermented sauce, the thought of little bacteria, cultures that allow the shrimp or whatever to ferment it just turned me off, well everybody has different taste, I don't eat sauerkraut either unless it's thoroughly cooked. The Bun mam has a strong smell luckily they toned it down so I managed to eat 1/3 of the bowl, strangely enough, my husband liked it, I did not tell him what was inside it though! The pork was so yummy, it sure helped masking the strong taste. The che buoi was very good but there's no pomelo inside, I guess the tapioca was made to resemble the pomelo. The coconut was good too. Many restos cheat and put condensed milk instead of coconut, they fool some young kids but they can never fool me. I'll come back to try the bun gia cay, I haven't had this in 30 years, nobody makes this any longer. read more

Have never eaten here before, but wanted to try something different plus it rained all day aka wanted something soup, so my mom recommended this place. Ordered two bun nuoc Leo and two che buoi lanh for us! Overall I enjoyed it. The broth was flavorful and pungent: full of seasfoodish like smells and flavors. It was sweet and salty. Squeezed a piece of lime and added a little tartness to the broth to break up the saltiness. Came with different veggie fixings, shrimp, I guessed a piece of catfish filet, and pork belly. Far from pho or bun bo hue, so if you're looking for something like that, bun nuoc leo is not it. It's a bit more adventurous in taste and possibly texture for some, but you may find that you like it!!! Got the che for dessert and it definitely did not disappoint. Extremely creamy from the beans and coconut. The merry of flavors in this dessert was simply wonderful with different textures into one cup! One of the most unique Vietnamese dishes and not many places in the US serves this, so of course I had to pay this place a visit. The broth is very pungent from the fish sauce (not your ordinary fish sauce that you might be thinking of) and can be a hit or miss for some people, but for me it's definitely a hit. Think of bun mam but less strong. It comes with heo quay, fish, and shrimp, very unique. Serving size and prices are great. I got a regular ($12.95) and was super full. Again, shame on me for not knowing about this place after living in OC for so long. My out of state friend recommended this place to me for the special bun mam, which is called bun nuoc leo Soc Trang in this province. Apparently, this style is not as stinky as the original bun mam because they use bo hoc, and they filtered out everything to make the stock. So what you get is a very clear and clean broth! We got bun nuoc leo soc trang (their specials), and a banh tam bi. Unfortunately they don't use banh tam bi here anymore but used bun (vermicelli) instead. I come here so regularly. They have some bomb digging Banh tam bi. You can't get those in a lot of places in Cali so I would recommend it

Last Saturday I came here, I was hoping to get a massage upstairs at Tim's massage but it didn't happened so I went into this restaurant for a bowl of noodles since it was raining outside. When I walked in, it wasn't too busy, it was like 1 pm, but is too tight, too many booths are too close together, I don't think a person in a wheelchair can get in. I'm pretty sure is a family owned restaurant cuz a young teenager gave me a menu. I'm not familiar with southern Vietnamese cuisine, I'm more of combination pho or bun bo hue style lol. Looking through the menu, I choose the # 9 noodles. I think is the pig hock, thinly sliced pork. And a cup of water. I like it, is clear broth, doesn't really have any flavor except when you mixed the bean sprouts and lemon with the fry onions in, it gave it a little flavor. I didn't know what kind of sauce to put into it. The condiments table has fish sauce, chili oil, green chili, salt and pepper. I just ate it like it is, is still refreshing and lite for a meal before getting a massage lol I look around and see a lot of customers ordering their house special bun nuoc Leo. I'll try that next time and give you an update. Just a FYI for the owners, make sure the cashier give single $1 back for change so we can tip you, cuz my meal was $14.05 and I gave the young lady a $20, she gave back $5.95. I didn't have single $ and just tip the 95 cents, I didn't want to tip $5 only cuz the whole time I was eating, no body came up and asked how I was doing or how's the food. read more

Man, I have been craving this for over a week now thanks to a Vietnamese drama, Gạo Nếp Gạo Tẻ (Sticky Rice and Plain Rice), that I have been watching. After having been out of the country for a few months, she was hitting up all her Lil Saigon favorites and this was one of them. She had one thing on her mind: #1 house specialty noodle soup (bun nuoc leo Soc Trang). It's got a pungent anchovy broth, shrimp, and pieces of fatty pork with crispy skin--AMAZING on a windy, chilly night. Prior to coming to Soc Trang Restaurant, I've never had Bun Nuoc Leo before so I came in not really knowing what to expect. The only thing I've been told thus far was the dish is similar in some ways to Bun Mam (Vermicelli noodles in a fermented fish broth), except much more delicate. After trying the Bun Nuoc Leo here I can honestly agree with that. I ordered the Bun Nuoc Leo Soc Trang in a large size. The broth was extremely clean, with a slight hint of the fish flavor and a touch of sweetness. They also add cubes of flavorful roasted pork which bring a bit of richness to the broth and the pork skin is so nice and crunchy. Along with the pork, you'll find filets of white fish and a few shrimp. They do not skimp out on the meat here that is for sure. To top it off, the bowl is then garnished with a handful of chives before it is handed to you. When my bowl arrived it was accompanied by a plate of mixed cabbage and banana flower, mint, lime, and bean sprouts. All of which went into the soup to cook. All the flavors of the broth, the meat, the vegetables really blend in together nicely making this noodle soup too easy to devour. The restaurant itself is very clean and well kept even down to the restrooms. Service is great and pricing is on point. If you are ever in the area and are looking to try something different, give Soc Trang a try you will not be disappointed. read more

Be adventurous and try bun nuoc leo! It is similar to bun mam, both are vermicelli noodle soups made in a broth that is deep in flavors of fermented fish. It is quite hard to describe. You just have to try it for yourself. The noodle soup comes with a few pieces of catfish, roasted pork and shrimps. Of course, a Vietnamese meal is not complete without handfuls of fresh herbs! Aside from the bun nuoc Leo, we also got the Vietnamese udon (banh canh) which was not that great here. I would recommend sticking to what they are known for which is bun nuoc leo! We decided to give this place a try because it's close to the pho place that we usually eat which is right across the street on Hazard. We wanted to support this restaurant because this restaurant seems like it does not have a lot of customers eating here so we decided to give this place a try. We had high hopes for this restaurant since my dad heard that this place specializes in bun nuoc leo which is the cousin of bun mam which is basically fermented fish noodle soup. It tasted 65% like bun mam. I had higher expectations for the bun nuoc leo since I hoped it tasted as good as the bun mam from Nam Giao in Garden Hrove. However, the broth was kind of bland and subpar compared to bun mam from Nam Giao. I could barely taste the mam (shrimp paste) in the broth and the suong (shrimp) was kind of tasteless. The noodles were kind of chewy but the white tilapia fish was soft and yummy though. Overall, rating this a 3/5 since sometimes I could taste the mam sometimes it was too bland. They also sell banh phong tom too. I loved how large the banh phong tom is. They gave it in a large bag that had 10 or 12 of them in there. The letdown was that the banh phong tom was not as good as I expected it to be. It was kind of tasteless since I could barely taste the shrimp in it. You can find better banh phong tom at other places and buy some that taste way better at the Vietnamese supermarkets in the area around Westminster. Giving this a 2/5. Customer service was friendly and the wait for the food was quick. Prices for drinks are not free and charge you $2.00 each so that's a bummer. Parking is easy to find and not too crowded. Great place for bun nuoc leo. My home town is Soc trang in Vietnam and I could said that we are very famous for this kind of particular noodle soup in the region. I visited this restaurant just to try their bun nuoc leo and I am really satisfied. I like their broth. Not too sweet or salty. It also doesn't have a strong smells of mam in it but just right. I been to many places that sell the same soup but most of them either missing some ingredients in the soup or the smell of mam is way too strong. This place includes all the ingredients of bun mam needed to have like lots of he, roasted pork and fish meats ( normally used bass fish). They also have other selections of foods from southern Vietnam too. Their eggrolls plate are huge that came along with fresh vegetables and fish saucer to eat with. Yum yum yum the com heo quay is perfection, and the reason lies in the SALAD. I haven't experienced any other Viet place that puts that much thought into the salad of the rice plate. It's simple, but the addition of mint leaves elevates that shit and the proportion of pickled carrots and daikon to mint to green lettuce is just right! 8.95 is kind of a lot for the amount of meat at first glance, but you will reconsider once you finish that last bite.
