You can't beat these prices! I ordered a 2 item combo for $7.50 and 2 eggrolls for $2. Important note it is cash only but that's how they keep prices down. The food isn't out of this world or life changing but for less that $10 it was an incredible value and very tasty! I was surprised at the sizing on the eggrolls, they are larger than the average roll you get and they had a good flavor. For the 2 item I ordered chicken and a tofu, shrimp, pork dish. I loved the tofu, the pork had good flavor but was very dry, the shrimp I would pass on, they had a strange flavor to them and I picked them out after tasting it. The chicken dish was really flavorful, the only disappointment was that despite it coming straight out of the tray it was cold but I would still get it again. Ahh, what could I say? I have been coming to Bahn Mi So 1 for many many years now. They have some of the cheapest combos of Vietnamese food ever. Was craving for banh mi and happened to drive by here (for countless times but have not checkout yet) around 8:30am. 1st, the store name is Banh Mi #1 and they don't have Banh mi, what??? But they do have plenty of foods for lunch, dinner and snacks plus drinks. 2nd, Parking spaces are plenty since in a big mall strip. 3rd, Runs by bunch of ladies that are very friendly & helpful since I got helped by 4 ladies with smiles. I was disappointed, but got distracted that they have Bò nướng lá lốt & Bánh Tiêu and Cháo Lòng. Yup I got those plus egg rolls and coffee. Got to say , this place reminded me of the 80s & 90s where folks got meals to go for lunch and/or dinner plus snacks and coffee for their VNese craving. Still feel the same since it's not the cleanest but decent place with plenty of dishes choices and varied congees and they're known for Bánh Tiêu (VNese sesame donut). Price: sooo sooo reasonable or cheapest I see so far, 2 big and thick eggrolls for $1.75 (or less), Cà Phê Sữa Đá for $3.75. Food quality wise, not bad it all. Tasty and not bad of the portions but for that prices...Very generous. But I wish I got some fish sauce on the side for dipping. I didn't love their pickled mustard green because it was a bit too sweet for my liking. I also got their soup which was good. Excellent quality and very affordable prices! This review is long overdue. My mom introduced me to this place and I've been here about 5 times. All the entrees I've tried are super tasty. My go to spot for cheap vietnamese food to go. They usually have a decent variety of dishes made by 8am. Thit kho trung, thit nuong, ca kho to are the everyday dishes. However, they cycle through different canh soup, stir fry veggies, braised meat, and fish dishes. Some dishes are sold by container size while the others (like fish) are by pound. I also love the banh tieu (sesame donuts) here! They are thin and so crispy! But they only/mainly speak Vietnamese. So preferably, bring a vietnamese friend. I've been a big fan of this place and purchased the foods here on a weekly basis. I must say the dishes are made very up to par and have an authentic flavor just like in Vietnam. However, I wanted to write this review today because of the service. I ordered some vegetables soup which comes with some ground meat, but to my surprise, THERE IS NO MEAT AT ALL IN MY SOUP. I'm so disappointed and furious. I guess the female worker (very likely some sort of owner) took advantage of me when I was not able to see when she was pouring the soup from the pot with her back covering. She also didn't fill it to the top of the container and only poured in some soup when I asked for more. Is it worth being this cheap?! Banh Mi So 1, meaning #1 French Bread, is supposedly known for their banh tieu, or Vietnamese hollow breads, sprinkled with sesame seeds, which are then deep fried. Banh tieu just happens to be one of my favorite Vietnamese pastries. I came here to see just how good these were... However, the banh tieu was just average. For just 75 cents each though, these pastries are cheap and are double the size of banh tieu at other places. They lacked the chewy consistency I was looking for, and they tasted as though they had been fried in the same oil over and over again. They also have BANH TIEU DUONG, or Hollow Breads Sprinkled with Sugar, which are delicious! I've tried many desserts, but have never heard of this version of banh tieu with sugar. They are only 3 sticks for $1! Hard to believe :) Banh Mi So 1 also sells a variety of fresh food to go items daily that you can select. I haven't had any, but they look pretty good. They also have to-go plates such as spring rolls and a variety of xoi or sweet rice dessert plates. Obviously this place isn't some grandeur eatery. It's worn down, smelly, and homeless people frequent outside the store, sometimes screaming and whatnot. As of 10/18/2023, it's $7 for rice + 2 items, $8 to add a small container of soup. I ordered rice with tofu in tomato sauce, braised short ribs, and mustard greens soup (the bitter kind). It tasted good -- homemade and not overseasoned. Restaurants can make their foods very salty but this place tastes like how a Vietnamese grandma would make it It's ideal for a quick, cheap meal. You're paying for the convenience. But I do have to dock points for the quality of the meal and portion size. I was disappointed to open the container to find 4 pieces of short ribs (size of my pinky) and 5 pieces of tofu. Their foods are cheap ingredients that you can find at the supermarket and very easy recipes. I expected more than a little pieces of meat. They gave a lot of rice but then... you're basically filling up yourself with rice instead of actual food. I wouldn't even mind paying a little more, but at $8 I shouldn't be getting THAT little meats/veggies. It's honestly kid-sized if you exclude the rice. I was going to try their sour pickled mustard soup, but the leaves of the mustard plant in the soup were covered in brown marks, eaten by worms. In any home, you'd discard those leaves but they used it in their soup. So don't depend on the quality of the ingredients either. The elderly (70+) lady who served me was nice albeit sounded rushed. This is kind of a classic spot in the Little Saigon area. LOCATION & PARKING // On Bolsa Ave between Magnolia and Brookhurst, this place is crowded from even before you walk in. The parking lot here can be extremely hectic so be super careful as you're driving. The shop itself is quite small but you can't miss the huge sign outside. FOOD // Alright, this is the spot my family goes for their egg roll order. You know the one. 100 egg rolls for a family gathering, holiday party, a casual Tuesday night. All you have to do is call in your order for pick up and state your time. It can be picked up as easy as within 20-30 minutes! The egg rolls here smell amazing and taste delicious. They're extremely crispy and actually can be heated up quite nicely as well because, let's face it, you're going to be eating them for the next few days. SERVICE // For me, I don't expect much out of service from these places. I expect to walk in, shout my order, pay with cash, and leave. However, I do feel like I need to state that this place is NOT COVID compliant. While some of the staff are wearing masks (again, SOME, not all), many of the customers are not and will stand as close to you as much as possible. I understand that this is not the staff's fault, but they are not trying to emphasize that at all. My issue is also that not all the staff members are wearing masks.
