Also got just a bread and shrimp spring rolls. Because the banh mi is big, it seems the filling isn't as substantial but the flavors were there. The shrimp roll was ok. Not comparable to San Jose banh mi but probably the best in SF. Their bread is made fresh every morning as opposed to other banh mi shops in SF and East Bay which pick up their bread from a distributor. They don't make their bread by the hour but they make a huge batch for the day each morning. They use quality flour and the prices are a little higher but the bread is fresh and crispy. This type of banh mi reminds me of the $1.00 banh mi that my family used to eat back in the early 90s. The baguette is much longer and the bread tastes the same... nowadays the banh mi shops have adapted a thinner baguette and the bread is not the same recipe as back in the 90s, it's either too airy or too hard and sharp. So this banh mi here held some nostalgia within me as we were eating it. The bread tastes exactly like childhood. Firm not too airy and crispy (ghon as we would say it). We ordered different types of banh mi and enjoyed all of them. There was even a sardine banh mi which is something I'd see growing up or eating at home only. Not a lot of banh mi shops offer sardine version. I had the fish cake banh mi, sardine banh mi and chicken banh mi while my husband had the cold cut banh mi. We both thought it was good for SF standards. The street is very busy and there is no parking. My husband waited around the block as I went in to order and wait for the banh mi to come out. It's not really much of a long wait. And this area is pretty out of the way for most. We just happened to be around here to see what this shop had to offer. This is a hole in a wall kind of place. Omg the smell of fresh bread outside the banh mi factory is sooo enticing. Even if you're not hungry when passing by here, the fragrance of freshly baked baguettes will draw you in. This was not my case though. I called an Uber from across the city to come here for lunch just to get my hands on these banh mi straight from the factory and figure out what the hype's about. After ordering at one of the four kiosks inside the banh mi factory, I perched on a little red stool at one of the two tables to wait. While waiting, I observed multiple other patrons stop by and each pick up two huge bags full of fresh baguettes. One patron even carried out a giant plastic container packed with them. At the shockingly affordable price of just $1 per baguette if you order in-store, it's no surprise this place is popular for good reason. When my order was called, I picked up my lemongrass tofu banh mi and passionfruit tea from the counter. I tried the lemongrass tofu banh mi immediately. The baguette was very crunchy, and the filling was quite savory. The tofu itself was seasoned and had a dry, meaty texture, but it wasn't fried and didn't actually carry a strong (if any) lemongrass flavor, so I found it a bit lacking in authenticity, creativity, and texture. I decided to order another banh mi to-go. I had been eyeing the fish cake, so I went with that. I wrapped up the rest of the tofu banh mi to save for later so that I could try the fish cake banh mi when I got back. I think the fish cake was an upgrade from the tofu, but what I most noticed was the excess of mayo and some sort of dripping white sauce. That's on me for not requesting light mayo when ordering, but as for the liquid white sauce, I'm not sure what it is but didn't taste authentic at all. I'm really not a sauce person except for the classics like fish sauce and soy sauce so just something to note for next time. Also, the passionfruit tea, despite having real fruit chunks but no passionfruit seeds at the bottom, wasn't very good and didn't have much passionfruit flavor. It kind of just tasted like a really sugary fruit tea, which was a letdown. I conclude that the banh mi here are good but could be a bit better. The fresh baguettes are the main selling point. I don't think the other ingredients (tofu, mayo instead of egg butter, etc.) were quite up to standard, and what I got at least quite didn't quite live up to the hype. I've been wanting a good Bahn Mi since arriving is SF, and I found this location that's en route to the SFO Airport. There is only street parking, and inside are two tables with two seats at each of them. The only parking is street-parking, unless you want to risk parking at the Bank across the street. Inside the restaurant you can either order from the employee, or use one of their tablets. PRO-TIP: If you pay with cash, you don't have to pay any additional taxes. The tablet is pretty easy to navigate, and my order was ready in about 7-10 minutes. I ordered the Pork Belly Bahn Mi -- along with the Shrimp Spring Rolls. In the restaurant, you can clearly see them baking their fresh, and making the Spring Rolls and Bahn Mi in front of you. My Bahn Mi was filled -- but seeing some reviews saying they're "stuffed"? I have never experienced poor service at this place. You walk in and can order from one of the machines; once you pay, they start working on your sandwich right away. The bread is made fresh daily, and you can genuinely taste the freshness, which pairs really well with the sandwich. My go-to order at any banh mi spot is a combo. Located in mini Chinatown in the south of SF. They're known for having the freshest banh mi in the bay and they do live up to that hype. Their baguette is all fresh made each day which you can see them make through the window and their toppings in the banh mi are all balanced with ingredients. Their sugarcane drink is really refreshing and sweet but not overly sweet. My favorite are the fried egg and the crispy pork roast (forgot picture) just because most banh mi places don't generally have that and I think it's like a fusion item between Chinese and Vietnamese items. Their bread is crispy but soft, unlike other places where it'll be too hard to bite into and cut the insides of your mouth. Service is quick. Just a couple things to mention, I have only ever ordered for pickup and I highly recommend calling or ordering in advance. They get busy and parking is hard to find, so plan ahead. Banh Mi's and Rolls are their main focus, but they have they have iced drinks and smoothies. They sell Lotto, so there is a lot of people in and out for orders, food and lotto. I like the Banh Mi's, especially that the bread is fresh (soft inside, crunchy outside) and loaded with toppings. However I do find the sandwich to be kind of dry sometimes, so I add Sriracha when I get home. I love the spring rolls, because honestly I crave and love spring rolls. Got the #3 pork belly and the #14 pork rib banh mi's. $20.10 for 2 Banh mi's. They bake their own bread in house. One of the few that do in the city. The bread is bigger than the other Banh mi places and it was nice and crusty. Still, not as airy and crispy as in Vietnam. The #3 had equal parts of pork belly and fancy pork. I wasn't expecting fancy pork, I'd rather have more pork belly instead. The #14 comes with tender pork with the cartilage. If you like to eat cartilage then this Banh mi is for you. The bread was not as fresh or crusty as a banh mi should be, and the fillings lacked flavor and very very little filling!!! You can see from photos as same size as penny. Over $9 per sandwich is Very overprice for one sandwich with this quality. The combination sandwich felt thrown together without balance, and the lemongrass option barely had any of the fragrant, citrusy taste you'd expect--it came across bland and underseasoned. Overall, both sandwiches tasted flat and didn't capture the authentic, fresh flavors that make a good Vietnamese banh mi stand out. I still don't understand how this shop got 4 stars!!!! Their bread seems fresh and slightly longer than your typical banh mi roll, but the amount of meat and veggies they include aren't proportional to the roll size. Nothing extremely out of this world but seasoned well enough. I am knocking down some stars for the overall serving; they are very lite with filling the sandwich of their pickled veggies, jalapeños, cilantro and meat. Spring Rolls - Shrimp and pork is my go to! You get 2 long rolls filled pretty well with all the condiments. The peanut sauce, dipping sauce was extremely watery this last time around but nonetheless still yummy. Very spacious interior, there's some seating inside but almost always when I've gone and walked by, it's a grab and go kind of place. Staff is friendly, quick transaction so you're in and out.
