I lean towards the latter as I need space to breathe. It's very mellow, too mellow, maybe, and too small. I had a good drink there the first time. My second visit, there were hardly any folks in there and the bartender was sweet but untalented in the drink department. The drinks were undrinkable and yeah, they're damn expensive! It just seemed kinda lame. Maybe it's a hit or miss kind of situation and you have to go early, take over the place, and create your own atmosphere because they are not providing much. Either way, there is no excuse for crap-ass drinks for $16+ Don't make me wince in pain while drinking a Kir Royale, dammit!! I used to stop in to Bar Noir after work during the week when my girlfriends and I needed to unload on our loves lives (or lack thereof). Sometimes (if I liked the guy), I'd suggest it as a meeting place for dates. Whatever the occasion, it's the perfect place when you'd prefer a stiff drink or 3 and the ability to engage in the person you're with. Yes, I'm told they have absinthe! The restaurant imposes a 90-minute dining limit, which simply was not enough time to enjoy wine, appetizers, salad, entrées, dessert, and after-dinner cocktails at a comfortable pace. We were seated approximately 15 minutes late, yet that delay did not seem to be taken into account when the pressure to leave began. Throughout the evening, multiple staff members repeatedly approached our table, clearing plates almost immediately, asking if we were finished, and creating a constant sense of urgency. Instead of enjoying our anniversary, we felt rushed through every course. Eventually, we were directly told that our time was up and that we needed to settle our bill and leave. The experience felt less like fine dining and more like being processed through a time slot. We spent well over $1,000 on dinner and drinks, yet were unable to enjoy the evening at our own pace. I didn't even have time to finish my espresso martini before being asked to leave. Their kindness saved the situation, but it shouldn't have been necessary. If reservations don't guarantee appropriate seating for the size of your party, it's important for the restaurant to be upfront about that. Otherwise, the reservation system is misleading.
