Put my name down and we went next door for drinks and a snack. I got a text about 1.5hr into the wait. We were seated outside in the patio and it was giving Miami vibes. We started out with drinks (banana old fashioned, Sandia Es Vida, and Chiquitita) and gauc and chips. The drinks and app came out quick and so delicious! The drinks were delightful and the chips were VERY IG worthy. We decided to keep the mojo going and ordered tequila shots and some fish tacos. I really should have listened to the reviews of everyone else on yelp because everything other people said was correct. Despite the decor being lovely, The restaurant is so loud you feel like you're sitting inside of a nightclub. (At 730pm which felt like a bit of an overkill) Definitely not a place to go catch up with friends or go on a date. Unless you love screaming to your friends at dinner. The drinks were the best part of the experience. I got the mango margarita which was delightful. I paid $12 for two tacos that were mediocre tiny street tacos. My friend ordered the steak which he said was good however cost him $20 for maybe 3 ounces of steak. Service was mediocre. Our waitress was nice, but not very attentive and it was hard to get your order taken. This place really could be cute if they stepped up their menu and worked on the vibe and service. Hm, Maybe that explains why there was a hair in my friends overly sesame garnished salad, because you do have to walk through the entire restaurant to get to the patio. I hate to be this critical but I truly wouldn't want some else to experience this and don't get me wrong, I really wanted to like this place. The aesthetic is on point, however, they seem to have missed the mark on nearly everything else. To start, we waited for over two hours to be seated, after we were told multiple different time estimates while - also being told that we were next (almost like we were forgotten). Once seated, we ordered drinks and food fairly quickly and this is were it went wrong. One of friends ordered 3 separate items and all of his food came out before drinks had been served and before anyone else had received their food. He finished his entire meal before anyone else had received theirs. We inquired about our drinks after more food came out and were told either "I'm sure your drinks are coming" or "the bar is just backed up". Overall the food was tasty, but outrageously over priced ($14 for a lightly dressed Caesar salad, $17 for 5 round tortilla chips, guac, and salsa and $20 for 5 small pieces of fish that was in some sort of "liquid"). In addition, the drinks were overpriced for what was received. And truly the nail in the coffin was being informed that there would be 20% gratuity automatically included as we were getting ready to pay - don't get me wrong, we were a large group so I understand this is an industry standard, but no point was this communicated to us nor was it listed on the menu. I believe that Bar Cala has the potential to be a great spot but I think a lot of adjustments need to be made before returning. read more

However, once arrived, we were told to wait 45 minutes which we understood since it looked busy. 45 minutes then turned in an hour and eventually we were seated outside. There is no A/C inside, just fans. Outside they provided some hoses that sprayed water which was appreciated. The menu was short and super over priced for the size of plates/drinks. Once we ordered drinks, our server avoided us for another 25 minutes until I finally spoke up and asked for a check. On a sunny day it's definitely a place to hang out in the back patio, but it does feel smaller than imagined. The food is pretty decent, especially the vegetable dishes. I liked all the cocktails I tried, but agree with most reviews that it is a very small portion (and I used to live in the Bay Area so am used to overpriced cocktails). The wild mushroom dish might be worth getting because it's filling and any of the crudos are plated elegantly. Go early to avoid the long waits. read more

Came during happy hour and paid pretty much regular price for ok food. Tacos are maybe the only fairly priced option. Drinks are good but still overpriced. Service was also incredibly spotty; there was lots of miscommunication, we got seated at a spot where the sun was dead in my eyes even though there were plenty of open tables where that wasn't the case, we kept getting our order mixed up. This place just opened and its great! Went there on a Friday night, there was a live DJ. The drinks were delicious and the Baja tacos I ordered were really good. I really liked the sauce that came on them. Also the outdoor steps are really great spot for fun instagramable picture lol. We had a lot of fun for girls night. Went for a friends birthday and loved the ambiance. Not a big space but the layout works for them. Drinks were served in plastic cups which I think is smart as it's safer to transport and easier to clean up after. The only complaint was the DJ that night. Played good music but they kept changing the song so quick that you couldn't get into the rhythm. Each new song also didn't blend into the next one. It reminded me of a person switching songs in your playlist as soon as you get bored of it, never actually listening till the end of the song. I will always keep it real when it comes to reviews because I believe everyone deserves a second chance at a first impression. My first impression with Bar Cala is this: it needs a LOT of work. The Pros: definitely a super cute vibe. I discovered this place via Tiktok videos which highly recommended it, and it was aesthetically very appealing. Who doesn't enjoy going to a place where you can literally do the best instagram photos? Everything else was a con. They quoted me a 30 minute wait, but ended up being an hour. Because they don't really have a spot for their patrons to wait, we kind of just awkwardly lingered in the main entrance. Because there were so many of us, they actually got a bit annoyed that we were just standing there, and told the group to either go to the other bar to wait, or wait outside. It was super cold outside, so of course, no one wanted to do that. I understand being annoyed, but that's just part of the business. Figure it out, or add a waiting area. Not everyone wants to go across the street to another bar just to spend money to wait for dinner. Around the 47 minute mark, we were finally sat at our table, and was told to just scan the QR code and start ordering. This would have been fine as many of us learned quickly how to use QR ordering at restaurants during the pandemic. However, the system they had in place for ordering was less than ideal. It was confusing, and even though it told us to do a group order, some orders did not go through, and those who ordered last, somehow managed to get their orders first. We were there for a birthday party, and my friend literally didn't get his food or drinks after everyone had already eaten. I finally went to the bar and had to order the wine and drinks outside of the app because it would not send the order. It is okay to use technology, but let's actually make sure the technology works. I want to also talk about the service staff. Our server would have been fine if she didn't look so annoyed at us. It was actually quite rude how she literally just stared at us when we sat down (yes, we were a larger party) and told us to just use the QR to order, and just walked away, leaving a table of people struggling to order because the technology did not work as designed. What she should have done is simply say something to the following extent: "hey, here's how this app works, and if you are finding that it isn't working, just let me know and I can help troubleshoot." Instead, she just walked away, and she was not seen again until the food started coming out. Even when the food started coming out, food was missing, and I had to inquire with the bar staff because she was nowhere to be found. There was no table staff to ask if we needed anything else, or even to check how the food was doing. Pricing of the food was pretty average for an aesthetically pleasing restaurant, but the food was mediocre. The drinks were super cute, but small. However... the food was still tasty enough for a dinner party. This place has an opportunity for growth and development. The number one thing they need to remember is this: take care of the customers, and the rest will fall into place. They failed heavily on the customer service side of things, but the food was okay. Overall, I will give this place two stars. Approach with caution, but honestly... it has potential. read more

No menus brought, I had to go ask. $13 for chips and guac that amounted to two tablespoons of salsa and about 10 tortilla chips for 3 people. $12 for two tiny fish tacos. 2/3 people at the table got their meals, 3rd person didn't receive his for 20 min despite us asking for it. $94 to leave hungry. DJ blasting over the dining room at 7pm so loud we couldn't hear each other. Definitely felt like Cabo at 11pm. You need to equip your staff with more hands. They didn't have the coverage for the volume of guests being served. It's obvious that the business makes the staff seat guests they don't have the hands to keep up with. Seems like the company could cut the money spent on the DJ to have another server on during dinner. read more
