I so wanted this to be a 5 start review....but it is not. When Bar Terroir opened I was thrilled that Tampa finally had a high quality, authentic French restaurant that was edgy, fun and approachable. Loved the vibe and was sure the restaurant was headed to a Michelin star. But time was its enemy and my most recent experience suggest this restaurant is going the wrong way and they don't care. Very on brand for Tampa. I had been a frequent flier to the restaurant and left each time delighted, excited and scared to share this find with others lest I could not longer access the restaurant. During my last visit the food was a major miss though drinks were great. The foie was a mess (some weird dippy dots situation that crumbled and was impossible to spread), a sour French onion soup (maybe a Tampa style), beef bourguignon that was overly salty and almost inedible. Service was perfunctory and our feedback on the food was met with a meh and no sense of responsibility. All this for over $100 a head. I have been to this restaurant multiple times, investing considerable time and money yet even with repeated servers, they act like it is the first time and we have never met. Nothing more warm than being asked if this is your first visit when its your 6th visit in the last 6 months. The last straw is when I shared feedback I was given a manager's email. I shared my thoughts and was warmly replied to with an automatic email saying the email inbox is non-functioning. Fun! We ordered the steak frites with Bernaise and it was like a salt bomb went off ....sent it back and tried the same dish again....saltier this time. I was not sure if the kitchen was intentionally spiking my food with a ton of salt as a joke, but needless to say it ruined what was supposed to be a wonderful day. Then towards the end of our meal some clown over 55 walks in wearing a hat. It's like sir look around! Everyone is dressed up and no one is wearing a hat! Have some class! Came here a day after a Valentine's Day for a dinner. Place is super romantic and beautiful. I had to make reservation a few weeks in advance and they only had high top seating available. The menu was pretty sizable and had a nice selection. We had charcuterie plate to start and some tuna crudo. Both were great. They only had one non alcoholic mocktail drink which was great but I wish they would have a larger selection. For the main I had duck confit and my husband had Dover Sole. Both dishes were excellent. I would say on a smaller side, I wouldn't come in very hungry. We end up not having a dessert because they didn't have anything we wanted and all they didn't have herbal tea. This is my first time trying French cuisine so I can't say much about the food but overall it is alright. I do especially like the escargot, and wish we had ordered extra bread to dip into the sauce. The entree tbh fell short. The dessert we had was the chocolate mousse, prob the best thing we ate that evening and of course we totally forgot to take a photo of that. OKAY, the space is limited at the restaurant. So if you're trying to have a romantic calm and relaxing fine dinning experience for 2.. might want to re-consider. The tables are SO close to each other that our waiter can barely get in between. We went for a birthday occasion so we were looking forward to it, but we were sat next to a group of 4 ladies who were chatting so loud that we felt like it was all that we can hear. We had dinner for two adults on a Monday night at 6:30. Hostess was wonderfully welcoming and warm. She agreed to seats at a four-top because the two tops are very small (Paris-bistro small, appropriately). Our server was kind and accurate, he knew the menu and explained the cheeses to us when we asked. We sat in a smaller side dining area to the left of the bar, where it was a little quieter and had a pretty ambience. Still got loud enough to have to raise your voice to have a conversation. The main dining room had a live singer but we couldn't hear him in the side room. I had the bleu martini ($15 on Martinis and Mussels Monday) which could only be made with vodka as it is infused. It was good. We had the "pick three" tour from the fromage & charcuterie menu with the chicken liver mousse, the shaved ribbons of tete de moine cheese with dried apricots in a light syrup and the soft Delice de Bourgogne cheese, served with a mind-blowing fennel pollen honey . Outstanding flavors and textures. The baguette comes sliced and toasted but with a shaved cold butter that is so good it's almost like a triple cream cheese. Lovely textures and flavors. That was my favorite part of the meal, even though I'd hoped for a soft baguette. We shared the gnocchi with cheese and crab meat with crumbled crispy prosciutto- very good - and the roasted tomato and cheese salad ( good). Wow!! My boyfriend doesn't even like French food and he was impressed by here. This is a date night must. The inside is dark, yet romantic. It doesn't look like a Parisian bistro on the inside, but that doesn't bother me. As a French food snob, I loved our dishes. The heritage chicken (and its leftovers) have lived in the back of my brain since we went a month ago. The French onion soup is one of the best in Tampa and a must get too. We were so excited to finally get a reservation here and see what all the hype was about. Spoiler alert: worth the hype!! We were like 3 minutes early for our reservation and the hostess kindly offered for us to order a drink at the bar as the reservation before us finished paying. The bartender Garrett was phenomenal and took the time to go over the taste profile of a few menu cocktails as well as ensure us he could make anything off menu we wanted as well. Within 5 minutes of being at the bar the hostess ushered us to our table. Our server Jeff was quick to approach our table and never made us feel rushed as we asked about the different fromage options and some menu suggestions. Usually we order slowly and figure out our hunger level, but they prefer to take the full order and course it out for you, honestly this was a better decision bc we didn't want to second guess our top picks and we got to get rid of the menus quickly. With Haven no longer an option for charcuterie in tampa, I can tell you this is where you want to be. The ability to customize to your own personal preference and the excellent presentation is all you could desire in a cheese plate. Every cheese was paired expertly with a unique condiment. The baguette was a must; so fresh, grilled and warm with the fluffiest shaved butter to accompany. My fiancé had the award winning burger with carmelized onion, raclette and a homemade mustard sauce. I wanted to have a lighter option and went with the oysters and salmon crudo. Honestly I love salmon but usually it's my least favorite crudo option and this blew me away. It was by far the best crudo I have ever had and I have tried it all over the world. The oysters were from the west coast of the US and were incredible. By far the meatiest I have ever tried. Unfortunately all this delicious food (with 3 rounds of cocktails and the sommelier suggested wine) was enough and we couldn't make dessert work. We already can't wait to come back and would definitely request Jeff again. From the friendly greeting upon entering to the professional yet friendly service offered by the service staff. A dark, romantic setting as if you were in a French patisserie for a meal. Bar Terroir is quite an experience. As we discussed that experience the word too kept appearing. Our first impression was that the small tables are too tight and ambiance of the room was too loud. Our server Jonathan seemed to be shouting each time he approached the table. Drinks were too slow. There seemed to be a large number of people behind the bar so it was not obvious why mixed drinks took more than 15 minutes to arrive. Our server kept pushing us to order our mains earlier than we preferred because he told us the kitchen was very slow. We would rate the food good except for too much salt on nearly everything. The salade verte was both too salty and too much dressing. The chicken liver mouse was tasty, but too busy with extra stuff including salt. The steak tartare was quite good. Later on they were able to move over to better seating anyways so it all worked out and still got wonderful service without skipping a beat The coconut curry milk punch was balanced perfectly and the clarity of the liquid and ice made it that much more appealing. The beef tartare was so flavorful with the beef chicharron and that yolk was everything, so bright and orange. Some of the best tartar I've had ever! The steak frites was cooked perfectly. The fries came out piping hot and the steak was cooked perfectly, it was so tender. They gave complimentary lavender meringue at the end out of a cigar box and it was a very nice gesture. I did see people surrounding me finishing all their dishes clean and getting desserts so I know others enjoyed it as well This is one spot not to miss, the place is quite intimate and on a smaller scale. I am not a huge fan of French food and when I spend time in France, I equally enjoy the ambience and vibe as much as the food itself. I was surprised, though that I really did enjoy the food and one of the side dishes. The mashed potatoes were probably the best mashed potatoes ever had in my life. The chocolate mousse I had for dessert was also definitely to die for. The ambience was nice enough, but the acoustics were not fantastic for having a conversation of any great depth at the table. Wow, what a fantastic addition to the Tampa food scene! Bar Terroir might not be the biggest restaurant around in terms of space. But they sure pack a lot of personality and flavor into a small space. My server was excellent. He constantly made sure glasses were filled and made some great recommendations. The food itself is French Bistro food executed at a high level. The tomato salad was fantastic, especially with the vibrant tomatoes. The Steak Frites was cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of heat from the peppercorns. Dessert was delicious as well, especially with the Pain Perdue. That French Toast had such great textural contrast, with the crispy toasty exterior and soft creamy inside. That scoop of ice cream brought it all together. All in all, wonderful time here! Bar Terroir did not live up to my expectations, and maybe that is on me, but it is definitely not a place I would go out of my way to recommend. Like others have mentioned, it is pricey. The price was not unbearable because the food ranged between good and memorably great. The escargots were my favorite in Tampa, and the lobster truffle gnocchi was a small portion that packed a punch of flavor. The chocolate mousse was phenomenal; it was rich and texturally complex with crunchy hazelnuts, dried meringue and little chocolate balls. The steak frites were the least exciting dish but fine nonetheless. What is truly lackluster about Bar Terroir is the service. We arrived on time for our reservation and were promptly seated by a host. We waited roughly 15 minutes before our server greeted us, which would not be unreasonable if not for the fact that: (1) we were one of 5-6 tables in the restaurant, (2) our server watched us get sat and then walked away, (3) he helped a table that arrived after us first, and (4) a manager informed us our server would be over shortly (which was a lie) but could not be bothered to offer us water while we waited. This pattern of behavior continued throughout the night; when we wanted our server, he was nowhere to be found. Moral of the story: if you're going to charge for an elevated experience, you need to provide an elevated experience that extends beyond food with expensive ingredients. read more

Drinks were delicious, steak frites was the chewiest piece of meat, almost inedible. Paying a 2% kitchen fee (as explained) seemed ridiculous, and they say it was so menu prices could be kept reasonable? Not sure we understand since this is one of the priciest spots in town. The restaurant is located in the space formerly occupied by Little Leon and is a great add to the restaurants in this part of town. I really like how they revamped the space. The restaurant is run by the group behind Rocca and Streetlight Tacos...and they dont disappoint with this concept. Overall, the food was good. The menu consists of the classic french staples with their added twist. We started with the fries and baguette with Normandy butter (absolutely one of the best butters I've had stateside) as hors d'oeuvres, as well as, the mimolette for the formage, which was also delicious. For the main dishes, we tried the chicken and strip bass. The chicken was just ok -- the profile was very herb forward with too much sage being the overwhelming note. The strip bass was cooked perfectly. The wine list is exquisite! Service was great. And I love that everyone who works there is focused on making sure you are satisfied with the food and experience. Pricing was fair for entrees and a lil high in my opinion for some of the portions of the apps especially the soup being a small normal size cup. Everything was delicious and the service was very attentive as well as the staff very willing to work with allergies as the other person in my party had a dairy allergy. Wow. Booked reservation on opening night and waited four months to get it. Tonight it finally happened. An exceptional, unique and high quality meal. Everything we ate was delicious, meticulous and obviously cooked with love. It's wasn't prissy or arrogant, but grounded and rich, a high quality example of the French sensibility and tradition, but bistro style. Excellent but not over the top. Having finally made it in, there's some things I'd do differently next time. But here goes: The grilled baguette with Normandy butter. Maybe the highlight of the night. OMG. This should be standard fare. I'd really like it if they gave this gratis to every party. The lines would never end. We tried Le Tour, a three story smorgasbord of everything they offer charcuterie. Wow. The cheeses were great. Pate made in house was exceptional. Sometimes I don't love charcuterie, but this was really good and nicely served. I have a few notes on some of the accompaniments, but picky and minor compared to what excels. This was excellent. Next was beef tartare. Also a good example, but I was expecting so much from this dish, it actually was the low point. It was good, just not as great as I hoped. Biggest problem was that the food was rich, and my table mates were afraid of this one, leaving me to eat it all alone. (!) After this I was done, and could have quit here. Very rich. GF had the French onion soup and loved it. I didn't try. Then the entrees: The heirloom chicken was exceptional and probably the best dish of the night. Outstanding thick crispy skin. I'll be thinking of this a long time and waiting the next four months until I can go back. It'll be baguette and chicken next time! But the beef bourguignon was also fantastic. Full and finished as I was, I gobbled this down. Of course, I had the upgrade for black truffle shaved table side, but this was really overkill. This rich dish is something you must have before you die. The peak of French comfort food, but it's something I won't need again. It was a five star moment. If this were my last meal, life would be good. GF had the halibut which looked great, but I was too stuffed to try. We couldn't possibly do dessert, and they don't have decaf coffee yet. We don't drink so missed out on wine. The place is exceptionally small and intimate, a bit of an odd setting by Tampa standards. It's a weird location for this, but I think the unique menu will keep people coming back. Not sure how they'll activate the outdoor porch. Probably as a staging area for people waiting to get inside. Tampa has arrived as a real foodie town! Get your reservations now. Bar Terrior is worth trying. When I go back, I'll order the perfect menu and update this review. BT is one of those rare restaurants that takes familiar dishes and drinks you may have enjoyed a dozen times before and elevates them with creative preparations, thoughtful seasoning, and unexpected touches. This is where food meets art, and I'm here for it. The service was impeccable. Jeff and Dylan were gracious, knowledgeable, and accommodating, and they even have a sommelier on hand for the wine aficionados among us. What makes Bar Terroir even more impressive is that all of this refinement comes without the usual stuffiness. BT has cultivated a fun, relaxed atmosphere. We were excited to try Bar Terroir in Tampa, especially since my husband is French and we had just spent the summer in Normandy with family. We were missing French food, so this seemed like the perfect spot. The atmosphere is warm and romantic -- ideal for first dates or anniversaries. The wine list is impressively extensive, especially compared to the concise food menu (one page each for appetizers, entrées, and desserts). We visited on a Monday evening with a party of six. Our server, Sydney, was charming and knowledgeable, explaining the dishes well. Service was excellent: despite our large group, the food arrived promptly and no one was left waiting for a long time. Our table sampled a wide range of dishes: baguettes with Norman butter, salade verte, sole meunière, onion soup, steak frites, mussels en croûte, gnocchi à la Parisienne, escargots, and more. The food was enjoyable overall, but it leaned toward "French‑ish" -- flavors adapted more for American palates than traditional French ones. My main disappointment was the Béarnaise sauce with my steak. It lacked the signature tarragon flavor, was too runny, and tasted mostly of its egg base. The escargots, though nicely presented, had an unexpected lemony note that overpowered the garlic and parsley. Dessert was also a miss: the Banana Crème Brûlée turned out to be sweet plantains arranged around the Crème brûlée, sprinkled with some coarse salt that made the dish more salty than sweet. While the dishes leaned more toward Americanized French cuisine than we'd hoped for, they were still tasty and satisfying. Had high expectations coming over and the first impression was that it was a bit odd that they were doing some outdoor reno and it wasn't very clear where the entrance was. When we first got there we were one of the only tables so service speed was significantly different than later. Drinks were really good! And food was enjoyable, but if we were comparing, the steak tartare was a bit fishy tasting and the beef chips were just a bit odd (comparing to steak tartare at Ponte). Escargot, soup, foie gras, and salad were all good but I probably enjoyed the foie gras the most. Overall an enjoyable experience and would like to come back to try all the entrees. We came in opening day and we had a fivevstar experience. I was looking to try new foods and new things and I got that. I must say the staff wa so wonderful. Our waiter Miko was great explaining the menu and the other people at the bar were so helpful as well with drink recommendations and service. I have been to ROCCA many times and also Streetlight and I was so excited for this place to open even though I don't know much about French food. The charcuterie was probably the best I have ever had and they have gluten-free toast points for it as well as the Escargot. We tried a lot of menu items and loved everything. We had the oysters as well and they were a bit over priced, but great. The Escargot comes two different ways and we had it with garlic and butter and it was nice. I had the Niçoisce salad and I loved it. We needed a place like this over here in Palma Ceia full stop. Drinks were fabulous as well, I had the French 75 which is my personal favorite. I tried the Rosé and also the cocktail (Cantelope Paloma). The beef tartar was also the best I have ever had. For opening night it was great; loved everything. read more
