My daughter and I stopped here on a cool Wednesday evening. Her dad joined us later. I remember coming in here when it first opened, but this time, it was bustling as it came close to 6:30. We didn't have a reservation, so we were allotted 40 minutes. We ordered the Persimmon salad, Hamachi Crudo, Jerk chicken, linguine and fried chicken. The food came out expeditiously. Breakfast burritos are certainly an LA staple and having been born and raised here, I've watched the evolution of what used to be a construction site lunch truck specialty become worthy of mention by the Michelin man himself. So many delicious renditions exist, especially in the South Bay, but few have the hype and exclusivity of Baran's pandemic-born, breakfast burrito business. The reserve in advance and pick-up at a specific time model they employ is designed to ensure quality, freshness and allow the kitchen to be properly prepared for the day's work. However, it isn't without its drawbacks. My first experience with Baran's famous tortilla wrapped breakfast vessel was positive overall. Walked right in, paid, walked out with a brown bag of bacony breakfast bliss. Drove straight home and only 5 minutes from pick-up, was unwrapping the paper-lined foil wrapper with the excitement of a kid on Christmas morning. The breakfast grinch had other plans for my presents though. The paper lining of the foil wrapper was totally stuck to the overly steamed burrito, ripping various layers off the tortilla leaving holes in the burrito. Seemed as though it sat in a steam tray for way too long. The second burrito was unwrapped only to find the edges of the tortilla were rock hard and too dry to eat. The fillings and salsas were indeed tasty and I can tell they use quality ingredients, but given the burritos might not always be prepared right before you pick them up, this issue could be common. How will I prevent this in the future? I'll head down the road a bit to Phanny's for a fresh cooked, freshly wrapped breakfast that can't be beat anywhere else in the South Bay. Don't get me wrong, Baran's is a great burrito but maybe I just happened to get a few bad examples for my first impression. read more

Woop there it is - a hidden gem in Hermosa Beach that has actual courteous, welcoming staff that knows the menu to make food recommendations. This hidden spot has really good food that take your tastebuds on a ride. We got the asparagus that - that comes with a boiled egg, kale salad, fried chicken and Indian egg (soft egg with lamb on the outside). We left with satisfied tastebuds and full bellies. Probably didn't need to order a bread appetizer with all the food we ordered. I'm so excited about this new place. Word is getting out and I'm afraid the next time I dine here it'll be a long line out the door. I followed my yelpers' advice on what to order and they did not fail me: BRUSSEL SPROUT SALAD It's a tasty and healthy dish; lightly dressed. The dates compliment this dish really well, so date lovers will love this dish. INDIAN EGG I haven't had anything like it. It's lamb sausage with a runny egg in the center. I'm not a fan of lamb yet I thought this dish was perfect. The cucumber yogurt salad complements this dish perfectly. SMOKED AND FRIED CHICKEN It comes with both dark and white meat. The white meat is moist and the skin is crispy yet not greasy. The sauce (rolling my eyes) is amazing--sweet with a hint of soy. SEAFOOD NEGRO How can you not love fluffy squid ink gnocci with real chunks of crab meat? There's a little kick from the chili but it's not super spicy. COFFEE TOFFEE DESSERT Boy oh boy! So when this dessert comes out you think they've got your order wrong. I'm thinking to myself "I didn't order a latte...." but WAIT, it's dessert in a latte cup! It's warm coffee toffee cake with this fluffy-not-too-sweet foam on top that makes your heart melt. Just try it and you'll see what I mean. BUTTERMILK PIE It's a really delicious dessert as well and you can't go wrong with this either. It's not as sweet as the coffee toffee (in a good way) and it's overall a lighter and fruitier dessert. At first I was shocked at $15 for a burrito but...it was worth it. Both the chorizo and bacon burritos' descriptions are deceptively simple but they are some of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. Their homemade salsas complement the burritos perfectly. We've been here for dinner too, and the quality is excellent. All the ingredients are super fresh and it really shows in every dish. WOW!!! What a fantastic restaurant!! We loved every dish we ordered. Baran's 2239 fills a neglected void in Hermosa Beach dining. Family owned and operated restaurant with a long family history in the business and extremely creative chef from Abbott Kinney "Tasting Kitchen". It is fun yet romantic, a little bit adventurous. While there is a feeling of upscale elegance because of the excellent interior design, the atmosphere is casual enough that I felt perfectly comfortable and not stuffy. Don't be fooled by the location either (a Strip Mall on PCH in Hermosa Beach) with limited parking. We made the reservation in advance via OpenTable to assure we didn't have to wait around which was a good idea Service is friendly but not obtrusive; needs were met quickly and efficiently but we felt welcome to linger and enjoy our experience. Although the place is small, noise levels never interfered with conversation. Lots of interesting things on the menu, all were good and I enjoy sharing small plates and getting a taste of everything. We started our food adventure with Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad (served with Dates and Pistachios and lemon dressing) followed by Grilled Octopus (served with Baby artichoke and chorizo), we also ordered the Crab & Shrimp Sausage Toast and Pork Belly Char Siu. Every dish was incredibly fresh and tasty and the presentation was on point. Baran's only serves Beers and Wines, Nice selection and affordable wines and at least 10 beers on tap. Oh my my my. I wanted to try some place new and fresh...brothers and sisters, may I be so bold as to say this place was amazing?! My golly, I've had a terrible streak with choosing places to eat for a first date but this place broke it!!!! To be honest, as I pulled into their parking, I thought I'd be in for a major disappointment. Things looked a tad bit cheap from the outside. My concerns were instantly shattered as soon as I walked in. By the way, parking spaces are suuuuper limited. You may have better luck on the streets. Everyone was super friendly!!! I believe the chef stopped by a couple of times to make sure we were satisfied. Food food food!!! Most of the portion sizes were pretty dang small. Steak tartar-what a beautifully balanced dish. The potato chips were a bit over powering so I usually used them as a finisher. House spaghetti-this was refined and subtle. I was expecting something obnoxiously flavorful but I was pleasantly surprised by how mellow it was. Chorizo verde-oh my my my. This was definitely a special dish. There are many different components to this dish that makes the overall flavor exciting. 2 pound dry aged bone in rib rye-...words cannot express the wonders of their creation. It's always a shame to slaughtered an animal...but this dish does the cow justice. Super duper juicy and perfectly seasoned. This is what I'd order to impress any date!!! This place is brand-new and super great! The beer and wine selection was awesome, really great craft beers. I don't really know how to explain the food but here goes....very well done,high end, casual, American food. It's like all of the comfort but incredibly done and different. First off, the bread was ridiculous. It was a focaccia style and served warm with the most ridiculous magical butter (tomato, garlic, something else?). We had the white asparagus and the spigarello (sp), the sauce alone was ridic (dip the bread!) My date and I both wanted the same entree so we opted for a trio of dishes: crab gnocchi, smoked fried chicken, and an extraordinary egg dish. They were all amazing! Can't even explain it right, but the egg was wild, soft boiled, covered in sausage, and deep fried. The flavor was crazy good. This place was recommended to us by a friend who said their Fried chicken was one of a kind. We also saw a review on LA weekly that stated it was one of the Best places to eat that you do not know about. With that said, I cannot wait to come back. Service was impeccable. Food was Amazing. It's a small new restaurant that has been open for a few months. I recommend making reservations since space is small, but the layout works with long tables and a few seats at the bar. The plates are shareable, but we usually order this way anyways in order to taste as much as possible. What we ordered: Endive and strawberry salad: simple and yummy White and green asparagus: the sauce is so good. We ended soaking up our focaccia bread with this b/c we didn't want it to go to waste. Focaccia bread (made daily) with umami butter (sun dried tomato and caper butter): it tasted like pizza to me Steak filet: cooked just how I liked it, medium rare, very tender Pork: my favorite dish. So flavorful. It does have fatty parts in it, so beware if that's not your thing, but if you love flavor and pork, this is one of those dishes that you should try Captain Crunch ice cream w champagne grapes: hands down...MIND BLOWN. ALL TOGETHER IT TASTES LIKE A CRUNCH BERRY. It's like the ultimate crunch berry for adults. I hope this stays on the menu. Mexican chocolate mousse w/ chipotle marshmallow: so rich. Loved the Nutella powder and graham cracker. They were busy (we had reservations at 9pm, which is late for us old timers, but so well worth it) but service was on point. Our food came out fast and at right temperatures. We were checked up on at a good pace. The owner/ manager was very friendly. We were very happy with the overall experience. Someone next to us had the fried chicken and that was also recommended by the manager and our friend. We really wanted to try other things so can't wait to come back to try that. We also want to come back and try the 2lb rib eye that takes 40 min to cook, but will definitely come w another couple for that (we've tried a 2 pounder before and could barely finish half of it). We finally got a sitter and tried Baran's tonight! It was a last minute date night with my husband so we didn't have reservations but it was pretty early (6 p.m.) so we were able to get in right away. We were seated at the counter height communal table in the center of the super tiny restaurant. The waitress was friendly, attentive and helpful. The dishes are all small plates so the suggestion is to order 2 per person. The food is brought out as it is ready and I think the fresh bread and fresh pastas are made in house. We ordered the focaccia bread and umami butter (yum!), white and green asparagus (saucy and great for dipping the bread in to as well :), wild mushroom linguini (surprising hearty), fried chicken (my favorite--so smoky and flavorful) and pork belly charsiu (perfectly tender). All of the food we ordered seemed heavy, but it was so GOOD. We left feeling stuffed and I wish we had room for dessert! I think this place would be a perfect dinner spot for 4 people. That way you can order a variety of dishes which seem pretty sharable for 4 people. Came here after a job I had in Torrance. And since I'm not in this area regularly, I wanted to check a well rated foodie place. This was actually my second place on my list and I'm so glad I ended up here! The place is small, and could be missed driving by. It's on the corner of 5th and PCH on the northeast corner. They have a very small parking lot. I was lucky to get a parking spot, literally in front of the restaurant! The restaurant is slightly dim, so great for an intimate evening out. So, they highly recommend reservations here on a weekend. When I came in, they didn't realize I came in alone, so they initially asked if I had a reservation. After letting them know that I was there alone, I was immediately seated at the bar. After talking with Jason, the gentleman at the bar, this quaint little place is only five weeks old. He recommends reservations Thursday - Sunday. There's a steady stream of customers, and let me tell you why. The food is great here! To freshen my palate, I decided to go with a crisp honest abe local honey apple cider. I skipped on an appetizer and went straight for the smoked and fried chicken with soy and chile gastrique. The smokey flavor was amazing and the chicken very moist. The crust of the chicken was very flavorful, just a bit thick, fried to a nice crisp. There was a nice drizzle that added a nice and subtle sweetness to the already flavorful meat. Wonderful presentation! I wanted to pair it with a staple, and was recommended the house spaghetti. I really didn't want to get something that heavy, so passed on that. I was actually thinking about the poutine, but was informed that it is a very sizable portion. So I skipped straight to dessert. Jason recommended the Thai iced tea semifreddo, which was an amazing recommendation! Not too sweet, yet very light and slightly creamy. It was topped with a ginger crumble/powder, and well balanced in flavor with basil. The staff was great here. There was a lady long, straight black hair) that regularly checked in with me, wish I caught her name. She was very nice! Jason recommended the food choices, and when asked about a beer to pair with the chicken, he went straight to the chef, who recommended the einstock white ale. My overall experience was awesome. From coming in and being accommodated for not having a reservation, to the sincere handshake I received from Jason right as I was leaving. Definitely a must go place. I will need to drive back out here to taste more of the their food. I'm told that the menu changes regularly, so I'd probably recommend checking their online menu. Sounds like it changes more regularly than the season. Prices are reasonably priced. I had a cider, beer, fried chicken, and dessert for about $43. Came here after reading an article about this place as one of the best new restaurants that people aren't talking about. From my experience that won't be the case for long because this place was amazing! We got the focaccia, endive and strawberry salad, and white and green asparagus to start. They were all delicious. The bread came with a tomato caper butter that was tasty, but I recommend dipping the bread in the butter from the asparagus. The salad had a nice lite flavor that was refreshing for the warm summer evening. Asparagus was cooked in a yummy butter sauce with nuts. For the meats we got the char Sui pork and filet. The pork was very flavorful and I would definitely recommend and would get again. The filet was super tender with mushrooms and onions. Both were worth ordering. We got two desserts because they both sounded really good. We got the Mexican chocolate mousse and captain crunch bites. I can't say enough good things about the captain crunch bites. They tasted just like the cereal and had grapes that tasted exactly like crunch berries. The mousse was also amazing and had chipotle marshmallows and Nutella crumble. I randomly found this place and was pleasantly surprised. After a long day of work and trying to get things done I was on the hunt for something that looked like quality good food. I came upon this restaurant through yelp and decided it sounded and looked good. Upon entering the restaurant it was not at all what I expected it was better. I felt slightly under dressed but the waiters did not make me feel that way. My father and I tried two dishes that were absolutely amazing, the Smoked and Fried Chicken was by far the best fried chicken I've ever had and the Grilled Spigarello was an ideal combination. These flavors truly enhance each other. My father and I oooOed, awwwed & mmMmed our entire meal. This restaurant is more than just eating it is an experience. The food here is beyond incredible. The Elk is a good proportion and is to die for. It is so good. I've also had the king crab gnocchi, however, while it was delicious he portion was very small and not filling, I can't wait to try the rest of the menu. It's worth the price for sure. read more

Um WOW. Just wow. I had been wanting to try Baran's for a while, knowing it was ranked up there with LA's best but I couldn't have prepared for how awesome this was! Great beer and wine selection. Can't go wrong. And THE FOOD! We decided to get a couple things and split. We got the focaccia (amazing spread with it!), ahi, curry brussel sprouts (the egg on top oh my!) and gnocchi nero (hands down best pasta dish I've had outside of Italy). Everything was so flavorful, delicious, and completely satisfying. My boyfriend and I kept joking that we can't go back to eating regular peasant food after this. It was that delicious. With 2 beers per person and splitting the items we did, our bill was at about $150 I want to say but worth every penny. I will recommend this place to everyone for as long as I live! My temptation is to give a negative review so that Baran's 2239 remains available on a regular basis, BUT it would be far to selfish to do it. I am going to keep this short and sweet and suffice it to say the meal we have last night is probably in the top 5 of the best meals I have ever had. I have traveled all over the world and tried many of the "best" restaurants, but to find this gem in Hermosa Beach is truly phenomenal. And I owe it to Yelp! My son and his girlfriend moved to Hermosa earlier this year from Santa Monica and they both recently had birthday's, so it was time for a dinner celebration. So naturally I jumped on Yelp to find a local option and really had no idea the dinner plans would turn out as amazing as they did. So now you know the background. Now for the S&S review: Food: outstanding, some of the best in SoCal! Highly recommended!!! Service: again, outstanding! Extremely informative, relaxed, helpful and attentive. Ambiance: fairly unassuming presence in a small strip center which you would pass a 100 times and not even know its there. Noise level: can get elevated with a fun and rambunctious crowd. Seating: max 50, so get your reservations in early if you want a seat. Baran's 2239 has now become my all-time SoCal favorite and will be my go to regularly for any occasion. read more

Been a fan of Barans for dinner pre-Covid and have been enjoying their to go sandwiches in 2020. Last night we went big for their NYE dinner - and it was amazing! This place is AMAZING! My boyfriend and I went for dinner here this weekend and were blown away by the food and customer service. We had an incredibly kind and helpful server who helped us choose food with our gluten allergy. And the food was SO flavorful! So many delicious herbs and spices and each dish was so unique. We will DEFINITELY be coming back! Highly recommend this place. But note - it's a relatively small location so make sure you don't go during a busy time or you may have to wait! Had a delicious meal at Barans 2239 last night. Inauspicious start due to a long wait for our 6:30 reservation was nicely apologized for with lovely glasses of peosecco on the house. Very lively atmosphere in a compact, friendly space. Once seated, the table service and menu selections were all wonderful. Focaccia with herb butter, arancini accompanied by a sumptuous creamy sauce, really nice ceviche, lightly roasted sea bass with ceci peas (unexpected and delicious), and broccoli perfectly al dente with who knows what crunchy, delightful sprinkle all around. Topped everything off with 4 cheeses shared among we 4, plus a nice little glass of malmsey... who ever has malmsey on the menu? But the insightful folks at Barans do. Going back soon! read more
