Came here with my family over the weekend, and it was pretty decent. Overall the fare reminded me of Malibu Seafood in LA. Very chill, and no frills. They make food, and don't attempt to do too much. We got here shortly after they opened at 11AM, and by 12 there was a line. When we left, we saw a lot of people ordering outside and picnicking nearby. Genius! The food was pretty solid. Clam Chowder: It was listed as award winning, so we had to try it. It's not dairy-creamy, which is good if your lactose is a little iffy. I was hoping for a little more clams, as I only found one large piece. We had a bowl and shared it, which seems pretty common. One bowl comes out to about 3-4 cups worth, so if you have a larger group, it's a perfect starter. Fish and Chips: I've been spoiled. The best fish and chips I have are at British pubs, so this had a high bar to get to. They cut the fish in smaller filets, so there's more crisp to it, but the fish was just a little over done. It was fine with the tartar sauce, but didn't stand on its own. Clams: The flavor was good, though I wish they cooked down the stock just a little more. Maybe because we were still early in the day, it didn't get enough time to cook down. The clams were cooked in good butter, and were delicious. As with any clams, watch out for the sand! Remember, no frills! They don't hold the clams in water to rinse out sand particles! Oysters: These were fresh and juicy. Not sure where the oysters came from, but I hazard it came from a local farm. They were pretty large and good. There was one that was surprisingly pre-creamy, which I attributed to the oyster having been poked through before it came to our table. Overall, the food was great, fresh, and worth a visit! The service could have been a little better. When we asked to order, the woman said she wasn't our waitress quite rudely. All you have to do is say you'll grab our waiter, not say it's not your job. Afterwards, our actual waitress was pretty curt and borderline rude. I went to Half Moon Bay and decided to go to Barbara's Fishtrap for lunch. Overall, I had a good experience. I am not a huge seafood fan so I was happy to see that they have other items on the menu that aren't seafood. I decided to get the burger for lunch. I thought the burger was decent but not amazing. For that reason, I am deducting one star. I did really enjoy the bun for the burger. The cole slaw was good as well. However, this place is known for their seafood and not burgers. Someone who likes and has had their seafood may have a different opinion on how their food tasted. The service was great. The servers were friendly and we got our food quickly. All in all, I'm not sure if I will come back to Barbara's Fishtrap just because I'm not a fan of seafood. First of all, I want to make it clear that the service was awesome! All of the people that we interacted with were attentive, caring and on top of things. And that's why they get 2 stars. The problem with the place is twofold. First of all, the food, at least the food we had, is just not good. The clam chowder was one of the worst we've had. The clams were rubbery, the soup was overly seasoned with Tarragon or some similar herbs, and the consistency was way too gloopy. The Onion Rings, advertised as their special appetizer, were super sugary. And the Petrale Sole, which is one of my favorite West Coast seafood dishes, was seriously the absolute worst preparation of Petrale sole I've ever had. It was overly seasoned with the Tarragon, and had no discernible texture to it whatsoever. If they told me they just boiled it and threw it on the plate I would not be surprised. To top it off, when the bill came, the prices on the bill didn't match the prices for the dishes that were posted all over the restaurant, on the signs outside, inside, as well as the menu. Turns out they charge you more if you are paying by CC, but this was not made clear on any of the signs posting the prices. False advertising! We complained about this to the waiter, and he started to offer us a gift card, but I told him not to waste a gift card on us, as we would not be back. I have had Barbara's for the first time in 2014 but only really had their clam chowder (it was delicious though)! During the pandemic was the time I visited again (and again and again) because their crab sandwich is to die for!!! True rating should be a 3-3.5 stars for a seafood spot. Its seafood comfort food but your milage may vary. They take credit now, it's no longer cash only (but you may want to inquire about any extra surcharge). Let's talk about the obvious: It's a tourist trap. Yet despite that, locals and tourists a-like swarm like flies buzzing around this small shack of a store (it has indoor seating and limited outdoor seating). So does it live up to the hype?This restaurant offers a ton of different menu items, specials, specials on specials, side menus, marker menus, menus on windows, and even an indoor menu that has some other menu items. So if you're really into it, you can come back many times to try everything from seafood to pastas to sandwiches and tempuras. Since it was our first time, we went to evaluate some staple picks from any seafood shack like this. There was quite a line at both the main storefront where people were sitting down to eat, as well as the pick up window where people were picking up orders on the go. We sat outside in a very packed and small plastic walled off patio which put myself up close to the line of mostly white corgis jostling to get their orders in so they can rest their legs. The wait time was basically 30-40 minutes during lunch rush so get here early or after. Fish & Chips - I got 6 medium-sized pieces which was one more than I expected which bumps the rating higher. The fish was tender and juicy but flakey too, which was great. I would say that the fish was as good as what you can get on the pier in San Francisco or at One Market fish shop. The chips on the other hand were lack luster. These days you got to make your fries stand out, whether you toss them in spices or you cook them to crispy perfection on the outside without damaging the delicate inside. Unfortunately, these fries are actually worse than what you'd get from making your own fries (double cooked, and frozen to fry), or buying frozen fries and frying it yourself, or compared to any fast food place that's got decent fries. They went cold and starchy fast, requiring a copious amount of ketchup to make up for the difference (and it was hot outside). It's overpriced. Clam Chowder - We got this in a cup instead of a sourdough bowl. The soup was hot (we actually saw them pour it from a heating station behind the cashier's desk). It had a fair bit of clams inside, and tasted savory. Note how others are reviewing the chowder for Barbara's Fishtrap. This chowder does not use cream/milk and is leveraging the potato starch. For a non-dairy based chowder it is quite good, and definitely a chowder to baseline against similar variants. Do I still prefer a New England/Boston clam chowder of various viscosities? Absolutely. But this chowder isn't bad in its own right. If you're a chowder lover I'd say try it to broaden your understandings. Otherwise there's plenty of other things to get here. Hit or miss! Ringy Dingy Calimari - Often I'd get calamari at any restaurant that offered it just to see how well they could cook fried squid. Here, at Barbara's Fishtrap, the calimari's breading has a slight mealiness to it, something you'll appreciate if you're into cornmeal or almond flour breading. But if you're looking for something with more batter or with more evenly crispy coating, it may not meet your expectations. Most of the squid was well cooked. There were some ends of the squid's arms that were overcooked and some rings were also tougher than expected. Steamed Clams - This was basically several pounds of steamed clams in a small pot. A copious amount of butter garlic and herbs coated all of the clams, penetrating the nooks and crannies. They provided a good amount of salty, buttery, herby unctuousness with each clam scraped out of its shell. You get enough that you can definitely split this with another person. The clams were fresh, but out of the 50+ clams, a few had a tiny tiny bit of sand. Maybe 3 out of 50-60 clams. This was the best dish ordered in this session. This was also the most expensive thing ordered ($36). If you are ok with the prices and find that there isn't a 30 minute wait outside, then this isn't a bad stop at all as there's a variety of things that's sure to appease a seafood lover here. Otherwise with wait time included and a service staff that's understaffed, you might want to look elsewhere. Other alternatives are just a walk away however, like the Halfmoon Brewing Company across the street, 5 other restaurants in the vicinity, and a Sams Chowder house on the other side of Pillar Point if that's more your vibe. read more

The wait was 30 minutes we came at lunch time so it was expected. You can either go walking on the water or there's a lot of shops around there. This restaurant has a side where you can get food to go. There's a few tables where you can eat at. We finally got called we sat on the deck that's covered. It was also good, but Sam's Chowder House has the best chowder by far. I met a server named Pedro. He is adorable. He really loves Half Moon Bay and has lived and worked here for 30 years. You can't beat the views. I drove by on the weekend, and there was a line down the street. Dine in or take away. Today is Wednesday, and I popped in after a nearby trail. At 4:40p there was only one couple inside..after me like 4 more couples arrived. They close at 5.. which is obviously too early since several people wanted to have dinner here. Go for their popular dishes-- you can't go wrong! - Clam Chowder - Fish and Chips - Crab Sandwich The clam chowder is probably the meatiest I've tried. Every bite had big chunks of clams. It was absolutely delicious! The fish and chips are also amazing. The fish is perfectly breaded and very tender. I was not surprised to learn that it's one of their signature dishes. Finally, the crab sandwich; probably my least favorite of the three but still good. I think that it tasted too fishy for me. Service is very attentive and friendly. We had an early dinner here on a weekend night and only waited for 5 minutes. We were lucky to enjoy sunset while having dinner. The location of Barbara's Fishtrap is beautiful overlooking the ocean. One of the best fish and chips I ever had. Parking in the front is very compact and generally full.

We visited on a Friday lunch, with visitors from outside the Bay Area. Since we had passed this place multiple times on Sundays, where we had to avoid the mobs to bike past them, we thought this may be the right occasion to visit this place without having to wait a long time. We arrived around 11:45 AM, and the accurate wait time of 15-20 min. was given to us by the efficient host lady. Even at such an off time, this place is busy. In my mind, this is a negative. The place is a victim of its own success. Soon we were seated and the ordering process was fast and efficient. Soon we were brought the water and a really delicious sourdough and butter. Plus one start for great bread. We ordered the items shown in the pictures. And I have to say, the food was really good. A notch or two above typical American-style seafood places. I especially enjoyed the fish in the fish&chips, very good tastes, juicy, perfectly fried. The calamari were good, but the batter had a strange, sweet taste. We found out that the chef must have an aversion to salt, even the fries did not have any (?!?). I am not a fan of overly salty restaurant food, but this one had none. The prices are very reasonable, perhaps with exception of the steamed clams ($33). And the $2.50 beer special (a bottle of Pils) is really great. Who else in the Bay Area offers this? We also really liked both server we interacted with. Very professional and forthcoming, even when I complained (see below). Now the bad part and the reasons I "only" give 4 stars. This is due only to the management. First, the fee for credit card payments. Folks, this is a restaurant. You owe it to your paying customers to offer this convenience. Yes, the banks will eat a percentage, but consider it the cost of doing business. Countless other places do it and survive just fine. Be forewarned, I am going to cut that fee from the tip. Second, they tried to add a "mandatory" 18% service fee because we were a party of 7. This us really not the kind of place where such money grab is justified, it is not a high-end restaurant. Third, they charged tax on the service fee. What?!? But when I complained, the server explained that the "system" automatically adds the service fee for parties of 5 or more (*ridiculous*). He said that they just switched to a new billing system and they were not very clear on how to use it. Shame on the management for not properly training the servers! So three servers scrambled to take off that mandatory fee. In the end, we agreed to pay the total with credit card, and the tip (less than 18%) in cash. No tax on the tip. The whole thing took several minutes of server time and they never lost patience with me (I know I would have). I regret causing them trouble, but I am not going to back down on such principles. So, here's my suggestion for the management: Just do like all the other restaurants do and you will make life for your customers and your servers easier and better. Looooong lines, loooong wait, great friends and whimsical yellow metallic picnic tables outside. That is what we could get, as there was no way we would find a spot inside. I don't regret, plus while my friends were ordering our fish & chips (very delicious, not heavy on the oils) and the classic chowder, I was chatting with other customers at the picnic table. The fun thing is the place was so packed that when the picnic table friends left, another couple sat with us and the lady was from SF and husband from Switzerland. This place is awesome. Yelp did not disappoint in recommending this as a good place to check out in half moon bay. I was worried that Sam's chowder house has become too much of a tourist trap, would be too busy, and would not accommodate our animal who was with us for the meal, and found Barbara's on Yelp. We ended up getting the to-go option as we had the pup with us. There is plenty of seating outside, but be aware that with the long lines you may want to keep an eye out and swoop in on available tables when you can. There is a separate counter (s) outside where you order your food as take-out or to-go, with a limited menu selection. i think the food that comes out is the same food, but there are two separate kitchens running at the same time. We got 2 mini fishtraps and a clam chowder in a breadbowl. I was mad craving clam chowder, and really enjoyed the soup. some other reviewers did mention the chowder is more on the floury less on the creamy side. As someone who is lactose intolerant, this was absolutely not a problem. LOL. I do have to say next time we will try to eat inside because there is a wider selection of food available in the proper restaurant (they serve pasta dishes, for example), and the fried seafood that comes out has more room to breathe (instead of being piled onto one another so gets soft/soggy sooner). If you're in the mood for the sound of a sea chantey, the smell of brine in the air, and the trappings of Old Cape Cod, then you may want to go check out the Kayak web site and look for a cheap flight to Boston. But if you want something marginally cheaper, then just take the scenic route down Hwy 1 to Barbara's Fish Trap in Half Moon Bay. There you'll find what looks to be an old-time fish shack right on the shore. But don't be fooled. This is no bargain luncheonette for merchant sailors, this is most definitely a place for landlubbers out to get some fresh seafood nicely prepared but at slightly more premium prices. Fully expecting a wait on a Sunday right at noon, Jamie W. and I were surprised that we were seated immediately in the beachy front patio where we were gawked at by the increasing numbers waiting for tables. The menu selections are predictable but delectable-sounding when you're in that seafaring mood which is the reason you're here to begin with. Both of us went right for the $3.95 cups of Clam Chowder, which is not the cream-based broth you would expect (see photo). It's hearty stock with lots of clams with little bits of potato, celery, and sprinkles of hot pepper, which altogether thicken the base to a tasty consistency. We also shared "The Wedge", which has become our salad of choice at a lot of eateries like Perry's and Paxti's (see photo). $9.95 struck us a tad steep for a slice of iceberg lettuce covered almost completely by the thick blue cheese dressing with a cup of crispy bacon bits to cut into the creaminess. Certainly no complaints on the taste. We went our separate paths with our entrees. Jamie was predictable and ordered the "award-winning" $12.50 Fish and Chips, which was a relative deal with five good-size piece of rock cod lightly battered and deep-fried to a tempura delicacy and accompanied by perfectly crisp steak fries (see photo). That may have been the best plate of fish & chips I've tasted since Gibraltar. Mine was no bargain. It was the $16.75 Dungeness Crab Sandwich that came with the cup of chowder (Jamie's came separately). It was a huge scoop of shredded crab mixed with celery, onion and tartar sauce in a large toasted and buttered bun (see photo). It was good, hearty and fresh, but having been the veteran of many a lobster roll, it was a marginally disappointing replacement. Did our stomachs reach capacity at this point? Probably but it didn't stop us from ordering a $5.95 slice of the Key Lime Pie, which was gratefully not green and had a fresh crust with toasted almonds (see photo). A refreshing ender after a huge seafood meal. Time to play my squeezebox for me mateys. Our rear vision mirror fell off right before San Leandro.....and we had to pull off at ACE and get a set of screw drivers that had the right head to fix it....but we persevered!! I am torn between giving this place a 5 versus a 4--here's why: We were supposedly next in line and yet we waited a good 20 minutes. Once seated, our energetic server dropped off a basket of sourdough bread and butter even before getting our drink orders. Awesome start. The bread was cold, but tasted great. The cup of clam chowder was delightfully unusual in that it was not inundated with heavy cream. Instead, think of seafood broth and thickened with potato starch. The Caesar Salad came with a cup of anchovies. Pretty gutsy--but I was surprised that the anchovies were not unpleasantly fishy or salty. I actually started making canapés of bread, salad and anchovies with them. The bucket of clams were lovely, and had a thimble of au jus to dunk the clams before you got to the bottom of the bucket. Glad it was not clarified butter but mostly clam juice. The clams had a lovely gentle bite that was not rubbery from overlooking. The clam liquor was balanced with herbs, garlic and butter. Next up was a grilled halibut. Simple. Moist. Just cooked enough to be flaky. Then came the Cioppino. The crabs were plump and succulent. The prawns huge and snappy. The mussels earthy but not funky or edgy with iodine. The clams and fish were lost in the red sauce that was heavy on crushed tomato--like a dipping pizza sauce versus a seafood broth enriched with tomato. I combined the red sauce with a scoop of clam chowder and a good amount of clam au jus and ended up with an awesome soup. The fried scallop and chips arrived next. The chips were thick cut and soggy. Lame. But... The colossal diver scallops were plump and cooked medium rare as I love them. Sweet, delicate, sublime. So. I am divided. The seafood and service was superb with a few minor flaws. But I expected the portion of steamed clams to be larger for the price. Also, we were expecting the Cioppino portion to be colossal, until we saw the he generous helping of crab. I am almost convinced to give them 5 stars for the respect and care given to the exquisite preparation of seafood here. Nothing was overcooked or overseasoned. But, for the price, I do expect consistency throughout the meal. And to be cash only for high ticket entrees... Really? Addendum 4/9/2017: have been back twice. Cioppino still a family favorite. Love the bottles of beer specials for $2.50. Combo pasta is awesome, garlic white wine sauce a lovely alternative to the tomato base sauce. Upgrading to 5 stars. Best in area. Too frikkin good. Eat it fresh out the window....crispy mild and fresh. Lemon and tartar....go get it!! I would...if I was in the area. Used the "to go" window to the left...ate at the outside tables. For some reason....the can of ice cold hard cider was a perfect match! read more
