We had a giftcard. The menu was huge, which doesnt tell us much about what could have been the best thing to order. We played it safe and ordered the calamari, which was our first mistake. It was mostly bread and a little fishy. The meatballs were big enough to share one four ways, and felt more like bread with spices than a meatball. And the cheesesteak was all cheese. I'm glad we didn't try more, but I was really hoping we would find something special. The best part was a side salad we had ordered, that cane with pickled peppers. The pizza was good, with a fluffy crust and a beautiful color. We also heard the burgers were good, if that helps. Parking was very difficult, we circled a 5 block radius for street parking that felt impossible. I was hoping that meant a lot of people were at the restaurant, but it mightve been more residential, as the restaurant didn't feel full. The plus side is that its very affordable, with cheap food and drinks if you can find an item or two on the menu that you and some friends will enjoy. read more

A neighborhood gem for over 90 years and unchanged for all that time. Its popularity among locals has not diminished. Our recent visit on a Monday night reinforced our sense of nostalgia and the need for decent food. Calamari appetizer was a decent portion with a mild dipping sauce. Tasty Italian bread was served. We both had the ravioli. Good tasting meat ravioli with a meat sauce. I had the cheese ravioli, both decent portions and a great sauce. I ordered mine with a meat ball and a sausage. The meat ball was the size of a man's fist, soft, flavorful. I shared it with my son who was dining with me. The piece of sausage was large enough to share as well. Wanted dessert and coffee but we were too full. I had coffee with my meal, hearty and good flavor. They have birch beer. We sat in a booth in the bar area. Waitress treated us like we were family. Pizzas came out of the kitchen on a regular basis either for diners or pick up. I thought, busy for a Monday night. Closed Tuesday. Good prices. My family dined there regularly and I mean my grandparents, parents and cousins . Patrons (people we didn't know) came by our table to get to theirs and said hello and gave us a friendly smile. Just flat out great old school pizza. The ambience is dated and a throwback to the 50s. I used to go there a lot as a kid and probably had not been back in 30 years. The food here is inedible please don't waste your money. I was very excited to go here as a close friend recommended to me and I'm starting to think it was a joke. Got the baked clams which was basically just a hockey puck of breadcrumbs with no clam in it and the garlic bread which was actually the only thing that was good. I got the chicken Parm and we also got the spaghetti and meatballs which was just horrible store-bought sauce poured over rubber chicken and a meatloaf tasting meat ball. Decided to go here for a great night out ended up being satisfied by the food tasted different but was filling, on the other hand the pizza was not portioned properly and ended up falling apart. (Staff) Franky the bartender was an absolute shame to the food industry rude an gave cocky remarks was shaking an dropping forks, budder an etc I think he was on something, once we got the check we said we needed no box bc we were full an once giving the tip he said that we need to tip better next time. Old school, North Jersey pizzaria - love it! My girlfriend and I found out about this place via Barstool Pizza reviews. We shared the house salad, and ordered a medium cheese/olive pie. Our server was friendly - told us all about Barcelona's history (Barcelona is the last name of the original owner). Garfield is a visibly Italian neighborhood, and is very well kept. lol went there a while ago and asked to be seated with Christine. Little old waitress huffed and said she doesn't work here anymore. We ask o wow why. Lady said with a loud voice. Did you hear what I said. Christine DOES NOT WORK HERE ANYMORE!!! Well I raised my voice and sound YES I HEARD YOU SAY CHRISTINE DOES NOT WORK HERE ANYMORE!! That's when her little sister who is also a waitress jumped in on this. I really do think shorty and shorty were very jealous of Christine. Stopped in Barcelona's for lunch since we were in the neighborhood and hadn't been there in years after moving out of the area. We ordered a small plate of mussels, fried calamari & a cheese pizza. The prices were very reasonable & we both agreed everything was tasty. However the ingredients used were not high quality. The calamari rings were obviously frozen, mussels were ok topped with bland tomato sauce. The pizza had a nice char on the tasteless crust & was a bit greasy. Barcelona's serves decent Italian food at reasonable prices but you do get what you pay for! read more

Barcelona's is a restaurant I have been coming to from time-to-time since the mid 70's when I was in the 4th grade. Mom would treat me to a burger deluxe after school, which was right around the corner, Most Holy Name parish school. I would love to push the little button on the wall at our seating booth to summons the waitress. Lo and behold - the buttons in the booths are still there today! The place has some great history as a local neighborhood "go to" to meet with friends and family. The pizza is always a favorite starter for us, and we usually stick to the steak sandwich on garlic bread with crinkle cut fries, some of their parmigiana dishes, which includes a nice side salad, and some other hot sandwiches as entrees. Listen, the food is not going to blow you away by any means but it's pretty good nonetheless and it's a fun place to gather and most importantly won't take a big chunk out of your wallet. Barcelona's opened in the midst of the Great Depression in 1933, when FDR was hard at work trying to foster employment programs to keep the American Dream alive! I can imagine hard working Polish and Italian immigrants coming home to Garfield after a hard long day working across the river on erecting skyscrapers like the Empire State Building (completed 1931) or keeping the nearby factories and mills in Passaic humming along. Must had been a worrisome time in our great nation and for this establishment to open amid all the troubles must had been quite the risk! So, hats off to the family who took that risk - as this establishment is still going strong 80+ years later! read more

I've been going here since the 70s. I can't believe the meatball parmesan sandwich that they served me and we got sick from the sausage, peppers and onions. Even the pizza has gotten bad. I will never get take out or go there again. Its sad that such a beloved restaurant has fallen from one of the best places to ine of the worst. I'm so disappointed. 3 times I got tajeout. 2 times the pizza was burnt so we decided to get our other all time favorites. Meatballs looked like frozen processed food ( and were tiny) I didn't even eat it. And the sausage peppers are onions well sausages were burnt on edges now I figured out why, it wasn't cooked on inside. We were suck for 3 days. Love this place. It's the same from when my dad used to take me in the 70s and 80s. Prices are excellent and the pizza is very good and consistent. The calamari and other seafoods are frozen and wouldn't recommend those items but the pizza, pasta, chicken parm and antipasto are excellent. Nobody has every item on the menu perfect. We ordered two pies (pepperoni and olive/mushroom/peppers) expecting a life changing experience. One of the pies had a hole in it (yeah I know, like an 1/8 missing) and the waitress was like "I can send it back or you can pay the smaller pie price". We opted to keep it but ate only a portion of it. Also ordered their steak sandwich...disappointing and the steak had zero flavor. I guess what should I expect. As for the pizza, the dough didn't have much flavor. I guess when you have had the best elsewhere, it's hard to compare. The charm of it not being updated in years is cool but the food is less than desirable. Full bar with some decent beers on tap. They are known for their cheap prices. First of all they serve PROGRESSO soups, you can see them on the shelf when kitchen door swings open, Chickarini, Pasta e Fagioli, Minestrone and Escarole all poured from can to heat and serve, no real veal, formed patties etc. good pizza and mussels, huge menu but 80% is blah. do not order wine , you get a 1960s sau-sea shrimp cocktail glass with horrific tasting low grade wine. I ordered lasagna, it was submerged with so much sauce it floated around the deep dish bowl! but it was only $7.50 Stick with a pizza topped with meatball or sausage and an order of mussels and leave happy with a bill under $25 with a couple of draft beers , the pasta is decent if you must. friendly servers, old time VFW vibe , only veg is canned string beans, instant mashed potatoes too, but a roast beef dinner is $8-$9 and you get a small lettuce/tomato/radish salad. go for the nostalgia and low prices, not a great meal. cash only . read more

I think we've been doing Barcelona's wrong. For years, my family and I gather once a year around Christmastime to have a holiday dinner where no one needs to cook or clean up. We've had the side room to ourselves, and the waitstaff is always super attentive and friendly. We've usually just ordered a bunch of pizza because that's a crowd pleaser and it's easy to just split the check up between 16+ people at the end of the night. But the pizza is...meh. Sorry, NJ, the secret ingredient to great pizza crust really is NYC tap water. However, this year, we all decided to get separate checks (which the server's patience with that alone is worth the four-star rating). So, I decided to get the eggplant parmesan. The eggplant was DELICIOUS. Sliced super thin, crispy, melt-in-your-mouth eggplant. A very pleasant surprise. Plus, ordered it fra diavlo, instead of with marinara, so it had a nice kick. This place is definitely no-frills. Not a fancy date spot by any means. Definitely in need of some updating. And yes, it's cash-only, but credit card fees drive food prices up, so I'd much rather pay in cash in order to get an entire meal for $9 (what?!). The pricing cannot be beat. My partner and I each got an order of eggplant with spaghetti, garlic bread, and and we split an entire pitcher of Blue Point Ale, and our bill was $38. I don't get how they turn a profit.
