If you know West Town, you know the wonderful Italian delights that line Grand Avenue...from La Scarola...to Piccolo Sogno...to Salernos...to Damatos....Vinnies...and BARI. Each one of these institutions does something unique and each contributes their personality to the overall vibe of this amazing neighborhood. I live in the neighborhood and I am spoiled by the greatness of these restaurants / delis. You have come to the right place if you want great food... Bari is an Italian Grocer that serves deli sandwiches (hot and cold). The original owners emigrated from a little town near Bari, Italy and they opened the shop in 1973. They carry many Italian grocery items like pastas, cheeses, olive oil, etc and also make their own Italian sausage. The deli serves sandwiches that have elevated to the top of anyone's "Best of" list in Chicago. My personal favorite is the Meatball but I also love the tuna, Italian Sausage and the Italian. When you compare sub sandwich shops, it all starts with the bread. To my knowledge, the best shops use D'Amatos and Bari is rumored to use it, as well. They claim to have D'Amatos make their own "spec" (bread recipe) and they do all seem to be a little different (even though they are all made by the same kitchen). I have found Vinnies and JP Grazianos to be more consistent with their bread but Bari wins on the ingredients (especially on the Meatball...its very close on the others). I absolutely love Bari and you cant go wrong with any one of their taste treats. Buon Appetito!!!! read more

Got an italian sub and it was really good!! It was a lot more oily than I'd like (oil was all over the sub and wrapper) but I hear you can ask for less oil or something so I'll try that next time!! Otherwise, it tasted good and I loved the bread. read more

We came here on a whim while working one day. I'd heard the sandwiches were really good and have been meaning to try them for the longest time. I have really been missing out!!! Unreal food at this hidden gem. I got the Italian Sub and was VERY happy with It. Bread was soft, perfect amount of meat, vegetables were fresh and seasoning was great. The prices were fair and the employees were friendly. I believe they do call ahead orders, not sure on delivery. I would highly suggest going to get a sub sandwich from this spot. Worst Chicken Parm I've had in the city. Chicken was bland, not crispy, and borderline rubbery. The 30 min wait didn't help either.

I had my F I R S T Italian beef at Bari Foods, and it was amazing. This sandwich from an unassumingly homey mom and pop Italian grocery store/deli ruined me for future sandwiches au jus, and I can't imagine the Italian beef from "The Bear" being much better or more satisfying than this. I ordered two 12inch Italian beefs and a 9in Italian sub to go, and all were delicious. The Italian beef was PACKED with beef. I read some Yelp reviews complaining about how there wasn't enough beef and I just would love to look these people in the eye and ask what on earth they're talking about. There's AMPLE, even ABUNDANTLY OVERFLOWING amounts of beef in this sandwich. I asked for extra peppers for an extra spicy kick, and it was perfection. The sauce was so delicious and beefy, soaking the crisp bread and complimenting the thinly sliced meats and peppers. No additional sauces needed. With every bite, the beef overfloweth. One single 12inch fed 2.5 people. The Italian sub was also very delicious and a perfect compliment to the juicy Italian beef. A great, less messy classic sando. The 9in was more than enough to share, and would be a filling lunchtime meal for one. I am just going to tell you, every time I go to Chicago I am on a quest to find great Italian beef sandwiches. I have tried Al's and Portillo and many other one off sandwhich places over the years. This time, I tried an Italian grocery that served an Italian Beef and I have found the go to place for me. No one will ever agree on who has the best but for me, I have found mine. Bari is a small Italian grocery with a small meat counter in the back that also serves sandwiches. I ordered mine wet and just the regular spicy giardiniera. They have an extra spice which if you like them really hot may be for you. I grabbed some of their macaroni salad and headed to the from where this is a small counter at the front window. When I first opened the sandwich I will admit, I was concerned. I did not see the giardiniera. All it took was a single bite and I realized they put it under the beef which I actually loved because I am not losing it every time I pick up the sandwich. The meat had an amazing flavor and was moist. The bread was awesome and held up well to the wet. My sandwhich never fell apart on me from start to finish. I loved this place and more importantly I loved the sandwich and the macaroni salad. Give it a try, you'll be back. read more

I literally get an Italian style sandwich from any sandwich shop I go to; it's my go to. So of course I got the Italian sandwich at Bari foods during my visit to Chicago!....and it was nothing to write home about. Definitely not worth a $20 Uber trip. The bread was super soft and fresh so that was a plus. But I was underwhelmed with the overall sandwich. There was no online menu that showed additional topping options so when I called to order, I was asking a lady over the phone what my topping choices were and she was getting annoyed by all the questions, PLUS there was a language barrier so in turn, I was getting annoyed. So I just settled for what came on it; lettuce, tomato and Italian seasoning & I added mayo and onion. I may go back and order in house and spruce it up a bit to my liking. read more

So we came here to try their Italian beef. I ordered their 9 inch with hot peppers. I've tread that Bari has one of the best beers in the city. And although it did taste good, definitely not one of the best or even braking top 5. Everything was there. The bread was good, the beef had a good flavor to it, could of used about triple the amount of peppers they put it in. And the same amount for the meat as well. Not enough meat to fill up the sandwich. Bari has to do a lot better than this. Now that I've tried their beef, next time I come, I'll stick to their Italian sandwich and meatball sandwich. Ordered a sandwich with extra prosciutto. $18. Sandwich arrived with 2 slices. Called the manager and he says they usually put 3 slices on a normal sub. Not only did I get LESS than a normal order, the manager only offered to refund the cost of the extra meat. Food here is great, but management and customer service are extremely poor. read more

Not really understanding the 5 stars given everywhere on this place- ordered 7 sandwiches for my team- called in for pick up- the person on the phone was very friendly and efficient. I got the Italian sandwich for myself- I can't like a place if the bread is not fresh when you're a sandwich shop. I'm reading other reviews and people are commenting on their flaky and soft french bread- but what I got was so hard and crunchy that it was hard to bite into it- I'm wondering if my bread was over baked or if it was too old. If mine was just a fluke then I hope this establishment works on their consistency and make all of their sandwiches with fresh baked bread. The oil and seasoning on the sandwich was overwhelming- and the filling of the meat was minimal- I'll stick to Hero's sandwiches on western and addison- never disappoints! read more

Baris-so glad we got to try it. Was about to miss it but realized we can drive out to grab a quick lunch to eat in the car. Ordered ahead of time n got dropped off to pick up the food. No parking at all around here n was a bit hard to find of out of town. Wanted to try their huge subs for $22 but decided to just do the foot longs. The shop was so cute. A little italian deli. There are tons of pastas and different Italian snacks and cookies. Wished we had more time to look and buy. Our order was ready once we got up to the deli counter. There's rabbit meat! The cheeses smelled so good too We got the footlong tuna salad and really enjoyed it. Fishy but not too moist. The Italian beef was loaded but very wet with a huge chunk of pepper. Cheeses were good. Roast beef was ok. Thin layer. Italian too. Bread is a bit hard and dry. Not sure if its supposed to be that way. Would like it a bit chewier softer but it was good nonetheless. I preferred the meatball, the beef was just too "beefy" - no other notes, some pepper spread or lettuce something would have been a nice contrast. A hole in the wall market with a beautiful deli in the back that serves up what I can now say the best beef sandwich I've ever had. It's so juicy and tender it absolutely melted in my mouth. The place is this cute grocery store that sells various things you would be looking for. In the back, there is a Deli.
