5 stars for the staff for sure. We dropped in last minute with a larger party that they could not seat. We were in a boat and had limited options. Their issue was they were short staffed due to not having enough employees. A constant theme I've been hearing a lot lately. So sad and frustrating. Somehow the manager, server and kitchen staff made it happen. They stayed late and served us dinner. Our choices were limited, I will be back soon to try the things we actually wanted to order. Our food came out how and delicious. The staff could not have been better. We owe them a huge thank you for saving our hungry bellies. The kids mac and cheese should be a regular on the adult menu, plentiful and yummy. We will be back soon and often. Thank you thank you for a great experience!!! read more

We had dinner at the barker island grille. It was very clean and comfortable environment. The food was good, nothing fancy, but well prepared. We started with the crab cakes. They were huge, lots of crab and nicely crunchy. Highly recommend. Three of us had the white fish. It was simply prepared which was nice because strong flavors are not needed on white fish. My brother had the Provençal seafood fish. He enjoyed it very much. Good service. Nice people. Reasonable prices. read more

I don't think this is the current name of the restaurant. We ate outside. My mom and her friend are locals and are meat & potato Midwesterners. They like no frills and nothing "weird" so they enjoyed their walleye (from the freezer?) and pasta (not homemade). My burger was nothing to write home about. Competent and bland. My partner's salad was uninspired with iceberg lettuce and too much of everything else (cranberries, pralines, etc.). Dessert was meh. The cheesecake's crust looked to be graham cracker but tasted like crisco and cardboard. The vanilla bean cake was ultra sweet and no frills. The good news: the patio is a sweet spot to eat on a beautiful day, and the staff was very kind and helpful. read more

Very good walleye dinner but the panko crust was to heavy for the fish. The salad bar was small but had fresh vegetables and very good dressings. The restaurant is very nice with a great view of the marina. The servers had a hard time keeping up since they seemed to be short handed. read more

Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. We had been here before and was not a great experience. Ordered the baby-back ribs. We started out with the salad bar, sever of the items were empty but was ok. Rolls arrived with the understanding they were hot, just pulled out of the oven. When we pulled them open the inside was cold and dowey. Finally the "baby-back" ribs cane out. I've never had to use a sharp knife to cut the neat off the bone before. The top was nearly burnt and so dry the BBQ sauce couldn't help. Neither of us could finish them. The baked potato was clearly cooked previously and reheated as it was dry and not heated all the way through. The broccoli was limp and brown. We were told it was from the smoking of the meat that the ribs were like that. We won't be back. read more

This was a very disappointing experience. We ordered drinks right away and after waiting probably 15-20 minutes our waitress came by and apologized as she hadn't put them in yet. We then ordered food and waited a very long time for that. We where very patient and fine with waiting until our food came and was such a disappointment. My side dish didn't come until I reminded our waitress about it twice. Both of our meals where not good, at all. My chicken was rubbery and husbands dish was a disappointment as well. My side dish, after finally arriving seemed to be instant mashed potatoes. For the price and facade of "finer dining" it was barely edible. Our waitress was friendly and she truly seemed to be either overwhelmed or on edge about something. We truly felt something bigger was going on then just bad food based on how her and the other waitress seemed to be having to fix issues left and right. We also should have received a side salad which we never received. Overall the waitress and other waitress was very nice. We don't blame them for the experience. The food was awful. The quality was really poor and we barely ate anything from our meals. But the hot chocolate chotti was delicious. read more

Went here for lunch to take in the views of the marina. Had been here years ago and enjoyed it but this time was a disappointment. While the service was good and our waitress was very attentive the food was below-par. We ordered the prime rib sandwich and the clam chowder. The Chowder was very salty and very fishy. The sandwich while very substantial, was tasteless. I expected nice slices of prime rib but I might as well have had sliced beef from a deli. It was very dry and had no flavor. My friend had the same sandwich and had the exact same experience. We will not be returning. read more

Used to love this place, has decent food but Don't bring loved ones to a special occasion there because the cooking staff doesn't know how to handle a large volume of orders. Went to a brunch with my mom and dad and experienced the worst service I've had in many years. Granted it was Mother's Day but first time I have ever walked out of a restaurant before my food arrived. My mom and dad stayed because their polite like that, not me. I waited 20 minutes to get seated even though we had reservations then after we were seated we waited over an hour for our food. More than 75 minutes went by after I entered the establishment I decided I can't wait anymore so I apologized to my parents, explained my conundrum then excused myself from the table. I wasted too much time there and I couldn't take waiting any longer. Talked to my dad a few hours later he told me they sat there waiting another 30 minutes before they were finally served their meals. That's 125 min, 2 hours and 5 minutes from when we walked in till their food was served. Just unacceptable, I don't care how busy you were your cooks should be know how to keep up with the short orders or maybe they need to reevaluate their career choice. I could have went to the grocery store, prepared lunch and wouldn't have felt like I wasted my time. I cooked large volume meals in prison for 3 years I know it's can be challenging but that's what you get paid for. Honestly that experience was the worst I've ever had and I will not be going back. Good food, nice servers but severely inexperienced cooks. Probably lost future customers because of this catastrophic failure of time management. Business side note: Take away waiters/waitresses cell phones during their shifts so they can focus more on the customers and not a screen. read more

The food here is really good. I've had numerous business lunches here over the years. Prices are very reasonable. They offer some entrees that are more traditional - not like the weird hybrid things at places like Applebee's. The service can be a little slow at times, but not terrible. I'd recommend. Has a nice view of the marina and Fairlawn Mansion. Excellent desserts - especially the carrot cake. read more

Was terrible. Went there with my boyfriend and he got a steak and I got the alfredo. The "original A-1 sauce" was some knock off brand poured into an A-1 bottle. My alfredo tasted like water and was beyond bland. Speaking of water, I found a fruit fly in mine. Never recommend for dinner. read more

Mixed bag here. The food is chef inspired and has been alternately good and average, but always a little higher priced than I thought it should be. The service is very polished albeit sometimes cool and detached. They have a great deck over looking the bay which is wonderful if you happen to catch the good weather. Of course in our neck of the woods that can change quickly! We were once sitting outside there enjoying a glass of wine and a sandwich in 80 degree weather when a cloud went over and dropped the temp by about fifteen degrees within ten minutes.....wow it got cold suddenly. Their hours are hard to figure out cuz we've gone there on a couple of occasions only to find the doors locked, and one time we went there at 8:55 pm and they wouldn't seat us (which seemed odd since there will still people sitting at tables looking at menus). I had a great sandwich there one time, and a less then satisfying steak another. The wife had a strange pizza there that wasn't what we expected when it arrived. We'll probably check them out again this summer on a hot day for the deck seating, but don't know if we'd go back for dinner. read more

My wife and I made reservations for 10/25/2008 at 6 PM. We called from our hotel in Duluth and were given good directions, arrived on time, and were seated immediately. We ordered 2 glasses of wine. The wine was not very good and we asked to send it back and get something different. At the end of the meal (delicious trout and elk dishes), we were surprised to be billed for the bad wine. The owner came to our table and was very rude, refusing to take the charge off our bill. I've absolutely never been treated this way in any restaurant in my entire life. His attitude completely ruined what could have been a very nice evening. We will never eat there again, and cannot recommend it. The better choice would be The New Scenic Cafe a bit north of Duluth. read more

Meals averaged $18-28 and weren't even served with a salad. King cut prime rib was smaller than a queen at most other places, very thin also. My husband says he thinks it was warmed in the microwave. Of the 5 meals, only 1 said theirs was OK. Food was cold, buns appeared to be from the local grocery store. Salmon was overcooked and very dry. Won't go back. read more

Just don't. Several people in the Duluth/Superior area suggested this was a good place to eat, but don't be fooled. This was the blemish on an otherwise delightful couple of days of dining in the area. While the location right on the lake shore was nice this was a pretty awful dinner experience. Despite our reservation a table was not held for us, then the table that was finally cleared for us was given to somebody else. We were served bad wine and the owner made us pay for it anyway and the service overall was slow, disorganized, and prone to mistakes. While the wood-grilled trout and mushroom pastry were both decent, they were accompanied by unremarkable sides and dull desserts and by no means made up for this truly disappointing dining experience. Sadly, the best part of our visit to the Boathouse was when we left, never to return (at least the drive across the bridge back to Duluth offered a nice view). Avoid this place like the plague. read more
