First of all, Atascadero is NOT Wine Country. Paso Robles is a wine region. NAPA is Wine Country. That said, I was shocked when we asked for water and we're not offered a chance to specify between still (tap) or sparking and our server brought us an $8 bottle of Evian that did not fill 3 water glasses. The Burger on the menu was a good burger. It was a little underdone. But that is not the shocking part. It was $87 for 3 burgers. That is $29 each! I have had very similar burgers at In-N-Out. This price is outrageous. In Wine Country, I don't flinch at a burger dinner for 4 at $187. But in Atascadero? Please. Our server was pompous and the kitchen staff lingered over the counter passing negative comments in Spanish. Little did they know, 2 of the four of us speak Spanish. Wish this restaurant wasn't a 3 hour drive from our house! While visiting friends in Atascadero, we snagged a chef's counter reservation at Barley and Boar. While it's not the most conducive to group conversation, I love watching the way a kitchen staff runs things (and Jim G. and I have been sitting at counters long before The Bear was a show, lol!). Chef was great and started us off with an amuse bouche: perfectly prepared chicken wing with a slightly spicy sauce. It was great! We also started off with grass fed tri-tip skewers and the chicken and dumplings. The combination of the beef, mighty cap mushrooms, and fermented plum steak sauce was great! The chicken confit part of the dumpling dish was great; I wasn't in love with the "dumplings," which were really a pastry-based gnocchi. For our mains Jim G. and I had a Tri-Tip special (his dish; cooked perfectly and very tasty) and The Pork (my dish). It was a huge chop of Iberico pork with basil and coconut sauce, 2 sweet potato croquettes, and some broccolini. The pork was so very good! Cooked perfectly with nice marbling and a decent little char on the outside. It was equally delicious for breakfast the next morning! One weakness I will say the restaurant has is their wine by the glass list. The place is described as a brewhouse and distillery, so that's not a total surprise, but in wine country, it just seems silly to not carry a few better wines. That being said, the B&B vodka soda was a super reasonable $10, so that was great! While some people say the place is overpriced, I will say that the price for the quality ingredients and perfect preparation is worth it. The prices are higher than what I normally see in Atascadero (and my friend who lives there agrees), but in some cases, you get what you pay for. The whole damn town seemed to be holding its breath. My attorney had warned me against bringing the family--"Bad juju to mix blood relations and public feeding rituals"--but here we were, crossing the threshold into what promised to be either transcendence or disaster. The hostess recognized us immediately. Not as who we were, but as what we were: dangerous food pilgrims with dilated pupils and twitchy appetites. She seated us at the chef's bar--a front-row ticket to the asylum. Six seats facing the culinary bedlam where sweaty professionals wielded fire and steel with the precision of neurosurgeons on amphetamines. "Watch closely," I told my daughter. "These people are professionals." The kitchen crew moved like a single organism, communicating in a twisted dialect of grunts and single-word commands. There was something magnificent and terrible about their efficiency--like watching highly trained mercenaries who had chosen spatulas over automatic weapons. We started with appetizers--a necessary foundation for what was clearly going to be a long, strange trip. The pork belly arrived glistening with fat and sin, a manifestation of pure American excess that would make a cardiologist weep. The homemade bread was paired with honey and butter in a combination so primal it bordered on pornographic. The black kale salad appeared as an afterthought--a green alibi to justify the debauchery that was unfolding. "This is God's own butter," my wife whispered, her eyes rolling back slightly. I nodded grimly. We both understood we'd crossed a line. The main courses hit the table with the subtlety of mortar fire. My risotto came studded with asparagus tips like green shrapnel, the rice surrendering to a creamy decadence that bordered on the obscene. My wife's blackened cod bore the scars of its encounter with fire, covered in spices that would be illegal in at least nine states. The child's chicken looked innocent enough, but one bite confirmed it was a gateway drug to more serious culinary addictions. We ordered mocktails--a savage mockery of proper drinking, but necessary to maintain the coherence needed to finish this gastronomic odyssey. They arrived in glasses that suggested someone in the back was taking the concept of molecular mixology far too seriously. Each sip brought a new hallucination of flavor. The desserts were the final insult to restraint. The chocolate mousse had the density of neutron star material, collapsing all rational thought as it hit the palate. My wife's donuts levitated above the plate, impossibly light considering the karmic weight they would add to our souls. Throughout this madness, the staff maintained the veneer of professionalism, moving between tables with the quiet confidence of people who knew exactly what chemical reactions they were triggering in our brains. Their knowledge of the menu suggested a cult-like indoctrination into the secrets of food that would make most culinary schools seem like kindergarten finger-painting. As we staggered out into the Atascadero night, our perceptions permanently altered, one thought crystallized in my brain: We had survived a meal at Barley & Boar, and like veterans of some beautiful and terrible war, we were already planning our return to the front lines. I've been to my fair share of fine dining establishments, but this place left me speechless. Initially I made a reservation, based on their current menu and when I discovered what I was craving dropped off, they made special effort to get it for me off menu. From the moment I walked in, the front of house to back, knew who I was and what I came for. I was on a mission. Couldn't have felt more welcome. A seat at the chef bar, provided for ample interaction with the head chef and opportunity to pick up cooking tips I could leave with. Food was outstanding! The amouse bouche for that evening were oysters on half shell, and given the presentation and obvious professionalism displayed by all, my wife gave it a chance at her first raw oyster in her young 50 years on this planet. She's now a believer.....so long as I can find a comparable establishment to this. Pro tip....if you ever have the opportunity to try Iberico pork (I call it the nutty swine from abroad), you best be sure to get it. Better than beef, and I'll die on that hill. Wish I had gotten pic of dessert, but I was already coma bound. For our main courses, we ordered the pan-seared scallops and the slow-smoked bone-in beef short rib. The scallops were were cooked flawlessly and served over a bed of delicious grilled pork belly slaw. The short rib was fall-off-the-bone tender and incredibly flavorful. The restaurant's reputation for outstanding cocktails held true, as my "Fit For a King" Old Fashioned was hands down the best I've ever had while my wife thoroughly enjoyed her glass of the Sans Liege Rhone Blend white wine. We concluded our meal with the warm, homemade donut holes served with slices of fresh peaches and blackberries over top of house-made creme fraiche, an ideal sweet ending. Overall, our experience at Barley and Boar was outstanding, and as new residents, we are grateful to have such an exceptional restaurant within a short distance from our home. Excellent addition to Atascadero and the North SLO County. This was our second visit to Barley & Boar and the second time was as good as the first. They have unusual and tasty cocktails, well worth their rather high price. I had the "When Pigs Fly" martini which was soooo good. They used a "fat washed" gin that provided umami richness that totally transformed the typically medicinal taste of gin. My wife had the Maiden's Blossom which was really delicious and refreshing. Her scallops special was rich tasting and also springlike with its vegetable puree supporting it. My risotto with summer squash and onion was awesome and filling.
