This is my new favorite coffee place in Austin. I guess I say that about every good coffee place I visit but this one is really good. We tried the dirty soy chai and the soy caramel lattes. What I loved about them were how thick they were and that volume just made it taste so much better. Love the coffee mugs they have. I am sure you can buy them along with the other merchandise they sell. I might just get the "espresso yourself" t-shirt some day. The place has a laid back ambience, a good WiFi, nice music and plenty of food options. You can sit back, sip your favorite coffee drink, work for hours, then get a proper meal, grab a beer and head home. It wasn't super crowded for a Saturday afternoon/evening and though this place definitely deserves a bigger crowd, I did enjoy the peace. There are elements of this place that are really lovely. The staff, for example, is always kind and accommodating. I think the coffee is decent and the vegan breakfast tacos are phenomenal. The rest of the food leaves a little something to be desired. I've tried a few salads which were ok and the tomato soup which I found an odd texture and a little bland, but all in all it's OK for the area. The vibe is extremely odd to me. The interiors and branding look like an airport wanted to design a cool coffee place but it needed to still be generic-enough to be approachable. For the area (the south Lamar location) it seems very out of place. We have Radio, Patika, Wheatsville and the damn Broken Spoke in the immediate vicinity. These establishments (institutions even!) ooze Austin charm, funkiness and energy. Barley Bean in comparison seems so boring. All in all, I'll still go back. It's a nice addition to the area. I wish it'd have a little creative courage but as much as I try to deny it, there are some very vanilla people in Austin and they need a hang out too. read more

I've been going to Barley Bean for a few years now. Online ordering is really easy and fast. Coffees are great but can get pricey if you want to add in flavoring. I ordered an iced vanilla latte that was $8 once?! Not even sure how that happens. I like the breakfast tacos and salsa a lot however the egg to cheese ratio is a bit off for me..would like much more cheese and less egg, but that's just my preference. I had them yesterday and they actually piled them high with bacon, so ultimately I guess I'd say they are great but also inconsistently prepared. The pepperoni pizza is good from what I can remember though it's been a while since I've ordered one. I also really like the ambience. I wish they had more space with couches and lounging area because this is the kind of coffee shop I'd love to hang out and read a book in. They play great music, from Seal to Arcade Fire, and I find myself jamming in my mind along with at least one song most of the time I'm in there. Overall I really like this place and keep finding myself going back again and again, and would recommend giving it a try for the coffee alone or a meal! read more

Another option to Radio but more urban and tied to a condo complex so clientele is different. Think young urban professionals and I'm not really sure how they afford these places... Anyhow, I've had some good smoothies from this place. Highly recommend those. They don't have decaf lattes but they do make pizzas. Again, a bit steep for what you get. All in all I prefer Austin based places and this doesn't fit what I look for but it may work for you. Regardless swing by and grab a smoothie for a treat as they are really good. read more

This is a great place to stop in and get coffee or beer, with free WiFi! The place has a good amount of parking, even though it's right off of Lamar, very convenient. Chill vibes, and well decorated. They also have a little outdoor area if you would like to bring your dog. My husband and I tried the cold brew latte (see pic), so unique and tasty! I am a coffee lover so I was excited to live right next to Barley Bean. I went in for a coffee and was not disappointed with the overpriced brews. However, the service and experience can make or break a place. The service has a bit of bitterness coming from some of the employees and it's a real turn off to come back. The atmosphere inside is pleasant but the music is so loud I can't hear myself think, so get ready to bring your headphones. Overall I wouldn't recommend, I'll find a different coffee shop to grab my everyday brew. read more

This place is right by my apartment which is the only reason I visit every now + then. Their coffee is good but it's a bit overpriced. They randomly have pizza which is actually tasty. I would avoid their breakfast meals, def not worth the prices they are charging. Their side of potatoes was literally 2 tablespoons of soggy potatoes. My fella and I had lunch here and we are so glad we gave it a try. I had the caprese panini and my guy had the turkey and avocado panini. Holy panini heaven, they were so so tasty. The bread was soft and delectable. The filling was rich and tasty. All the ingredients tasted like were fresh. It was a great tasty experience. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Coffee is great, and one of the few places that offers oatmeal milk. Nice environment, good classic rock background music. The food menu is healthy and thoughtfully prepared but just misses the mark on combinations and flavors. Example - the avocado toast had honey in the bread, which we thought didn't fit with the sundried tomatoes. Today, the wrap didn't have much flavor and the green sauce was heavy on the cumin. We'll probably come back and try their brunch menu, though, because it looks delish. read more

I really like Barley Bean. I've been to it several times since it opened and haven't been disappointed yet. I really love Dirty Chai's and very few places (not sure why) get it right...but they get it RIGHT!! In fact, it's always so good, that I have to tell myself that I definitely do not need another one (has espresso in it)! I've had different items off their menu, but my faves so far are the Breakfast Croissant Sandwich with bacon and eggs (drool-worthy) and the Avocado and Turkey Panini (I have to remove one piece of bread when eating this because it's way too "bready" for me). I've also had their Avocado toast and it's good, not my fave, but not at all bad. The only complaint is that it's hit or miss with parking. They have very few spaces, so on a couple of occasions, I've had to just keep going on to another place instead- which stinks... read more

Cute place, but very limited menu. I had a hard time finding something that was low carb. My bowl was mostly rice so that didn't help. It wasn't what I expected based on the menu descriptions. Our family was underwhelmed with the food. The seating is also not very comfortable. They served my son the wrong sandwich but he ate it because it took a while to get the food. I really want to like this place but they don't seem to have the customer's experience in mind. read more

This place is my prime study spot. They play music that makes it easy to learn to and easy to vibe to. The tables are wide and chairs are comfortable and instigate the learning process. Their happy hour includes beer and pizza and I am definitely taking advantage today! When I came here a few months ago I ate a mushroom swiss sandwich (no meat~because sometimes I try to be eco-friendly) and it was incredible. I want to BE as cool as this place looks inside. They even have kombucha on tap. like wtf kinda hippie voodoo magic is that?? They also have Jenga.. not big Jenga.. but you know... still pretty cool. Friend brought me here. They been popping up all over austin. Like the concept. Very true to their roots of being a local brand. Employees seems very knowledgable and courteous. Good choices of food and drinks. Very conveniently located on south lamar. You just cant miss it. Also found out that they do in house coffee roasting, make their own fresh breads and bakery goods. There are a lot of great cafes in Austin, but few with decent parking and a full menu. This had all of those things and was a great spot to meet outside on the patio under the shade. I had the avocado toast and it was very filling. The jalapeños were surprisingly spicy, which was nice. Stopped in for a quick bite and coffee with my husband. The staff was very friendly and welcoming! The barista and I have the same name so that was cool :) We ordered an iced mocha and draft late. For food we ordered the pesto presto sandwich! We took a seat over on the comfy couch and everything was ready and brought out to us within 5 minutes. The food and drinks were super delicious and i instantly knew this might be our new spot ! The atmosphere is beautiful . Great colors, art and furniture. They offer alcohol and wine by the bottle as well as sell cigarettes (don't smoke people! But for sure V convenient ). They have a nice big patio to enjoy as well as CLEAN single stall bathrooms , which are my FAVE :) The music selection was great and I felt like I could hang out there all day! The only con I have is they only have about 10-15 parking spaces, if that. I didn't have trouble finding a spot but it was 11 am on a Tuesday. Paninis, croissant, wheat bread - all an exquisite foundation for their fresh, delicious, impeccably prepared sandwiches (haven't tried their pizza - on their own dough - but will). The few minor complaints upon their opening were immediately remedied - every time I walk in, the staff makes it clear they want to create a great experience for us. With lively music always pumpin', a decent patio, a bright sunny space, tasty coffee, and a good selection of beers, it's a perfect neighborhood cafe. On a major street, auto egress can be a challenge, but there IS some parking. Tons of adjacent condos and apartments make this their go-to. This place has my favorite espresso in town. I don't know what they do, but it's always perfect. I love the lattes both hot and on ice. The almond milk they use is really yummy too. I've gotten calzones here twice and they are perfect. I feel like it's a great portion for the price, but I'm not a super big eater so who knows. The smoothies are yummy and honestly remind me more of slushees than smoothies. Great with a calzone. Last time I went I ordered a pizza and it was just meh. Wasn't crazy about the sauce and the dough was a little soggy. Was also talked into a large because it was somehow cheaper, but totally not worth it. I'm sticking with the calzones. For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would wait an hour or more for brunch at several establishments within a 5 min radius when this place is open. Food is great, coffee and smoothies are great, and the service is amazing. Nice ambience, super chill vibe, easy parking. Aloof staff and bad espresso My BF raves about the Barley Bean on Colorado and 3rd downtown. He was so excited to take me to the one closer to our home. We went on a Sunday at 530 PM there were 2 people working an neither of them cared about us being there. They had already put away the self- service half and half, and were cleaning despite not closing for another 4 hours. When I asked for cream I was given a little bit in a tiny container, so when the aloof cashier came with our food, that took 20 min despite the place being empty, she rudely asked if I wanted her to "bring the whole carton over"! Excuse me? No, thank you I told her. She did bring me more cream this time in a tumbler type glass, but there was no amount of cream that was going to fix this poorly brewed Americano I had been served. When my BF when to ask for a refill of his drink the man behind the counter replied "of what?" The staff is rude and lazy. I sent an email via their website to let them know of our poor experience before coming to Yelp but received no reply. read more

This is such a wonderful spot for coffee, brunch, or anything in between! Came in on Sunday afternoon and the atmostphere was so chill and relaxed. Ordered the thai tofu bowl, scrambled tofu bowl, and a couple of iced lattes. The toasted marshmallow latte was so delicious and not overly sweet. The bowls came out promptly and were incredible! The sauce for the thai tofu bowl perfectly complimented the dish. The service was also very friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend stopping in! read more

Really nice spot a little further south down South Lamar. About 20 beers on tap as well as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch on weekends. Hit all the food varieties from pizza to salads to sandwich, and all delicious and made to order. venue itself has easy parking and fast Wifi and a TV in the corner. Open all day and respect the customer. Coffee looked great and beer is typical price but very good variety for the area. Clean atmosphere and just a friendly and enjoyable feeling while spending the day getting work done. I only had a beer and coffee in my initial few hour visit, but 100% will be back in the future to try the food which created a fantastic smell throughout. read more
