The location is quite odd... in the middle of a run down strip mall that has an interesting mix of international and ethnic businesses: Mexican, Filipino, Salvadorian, Vientamese and Thai... woah! around the world in 80... steps. This restaurant is in an unassuming strip mall at the Santa Clara/Sunnyvale border. I frequented this restaurant years ago when waiting to watch a movie at the AMC Mercado. I always went for dinner, and I liked coming here because it was like no one knew about this place. And the food here is very tasty! The mild spicyness is a bit more spicy than your average "mild" Thai dish, but I like spicy so it didn't bother me at all. They also give a large portion of the mango/sticky rice dessert, more than enough for 2 to share! I recently visited for lunch before the noon hour, and there were few cars in the parking lot. I walked in to meet a friend for lunch and only 2 of the tables were occupied. I also noticed that it had been recently renovated with brighter colors and a more Asian feel. After we got our food, I noticed that more people started coming. By the time we left, the place was packed! The lunch menu has the typical rice and curry dishes you see at other Thai restaurant in the area. But it's a page in the regular menu, so you can order anything off of the menu. The lunch specials come with soup and an eggroll, and prices are around $5-7. The friend that I had lunch with knows the owners and told me that this restaurant is family-owned. Yep, yet another lunch post. But don't worry, this will be the last one for the week. I'm going up to Tahoe with Hubby and a friend for some gambling and craziness! I'll post about that later though. I picked hubby up at work and we were off to find lunch. This time, no research was done and we actually had no idea where we were going to go. At first I suggested Rene Rose Island for some Philipino food, but hubby said it was too greasy. Instead he suggested that we try that Thai place in that shopping center. Which one do you ask? Barn Thai. It's located in a strip mall with a bunch of different restaurants of different ethnicities. They've got Mexican, Japanese, Cuban, pizza, and Philipino (different than Rene Rose Island). We didn't get to lunch until 12:00pm so the place was bustling. There wasn't a line to get in and we were promptly seated but almost all the tables had customers chatting and scarfing down their lunches. As expected, hubby ordered off of their lunch menu which comes with some sort of curry, rice, eggroll and rice. Just as I expected him to order a yellow curry extra spicy, I ordered noodles. I almost got their pad see ew, but instead got pad thai as that is the safer bet. Suprisingly, my noodles came with soup and an eggroll as well. I also told the waitress that I didn't want any carrots or bean sprouts (so what?). Hubby made sure that the waitress got his order correctly. He said over and over "Extra extra hot please". I told the waitress that he means "extra extra spicy". He also mentioned that he could take the heat. The waitress didn't bat an eye. She punched our order into some hand held device and left to get our soups. At first sip, the soup was extremely flavorful. A bit sweet, a bit sour with a tiny bit of spice. I took a couple more sips since it was so good, but after about 5 sips, the soup turned out to be not so good. Normally these vegetable soups are clear with a hint of yellow/green. This soup was cloudy and upon tasting it, it seemed like they added a lot of sugar. I expect the natural sugars from the vegetables to flavor the soup, but no such luck this time. We left our unfinished soups to the side until the waiter took them away. About 1o-15 minutes later, our entrees arrived. I gave hubby my one shrimp from the pad thai (I don't really like them). They got both of our orders correct to the "T". My pad thai only had a couple slivers of carrot (they probably almost forgot no carrot). Hubby's curry turned out to be very spicy just the way he likes it. I took a small bite of beef which was very tender, indicating that the curry had been simmered for a long time. It was so spicy that I almost couldn't swallow it. I manned up and immediately followed it with some water to cool down my tongue. I asked hubby if it was good enough for him and he said he couldn't tell yet. 5 bites into lunch, he said "Oh yeah, it's spicy enough." Cool! We chatted about the season finale of Lost and other mundane things while we chowed down. Lunch was pretty good and this restaurant far exceeded my expectations. In fact, every place in this little strip mall is decent and perfect for the business lunch crowd. Price wise, it's not bad at all either. With tax and tip the bill came out to $18.20 for two people. Every time I come here is always been for their lunch specials. They are good and inexpensive. The prices generally run about 7-10 dollars that includes soup, rice, egg roll and the dish ordered. The service has always been good. The place itself is not much to rave about. I think the place needs a bit of renovation. For the right or wrong whenever I try a new ethnic Restaurant I try to order the basic most popular dish they offer. I figure if they can make the basic right, everything else has a chance. If I opened up my restaurant I would want my lumpia and adobo on point, knowing that a lot of customers would order it. So I ordered the pad thai from Barn Thai. You can't tell from the outside, but when I opened the door the place was full during a Monday lunch hour. I should have called ahead as there were no places for me to sit and wait for my order. When I asked for a take out menu they said they didn't have one. When I brought my pad Thai back to my office they didn't include chopsticks or napkins. I guess it's an eat in kinda place. Prices are good, under $10. Quality of food 2 stars. Edible, nothing great. Better than the instant pad Thai stuff in the groceries, but not as good as other restaurants nearby (pad thai on Lawrence for example). Usually I love having my leftovers for dinner, but tonight, we're starting over. read more

The Thai food is at a consistently good quality here. The curries are on par with other good thai restaurants and the bean thread noodle is good. The staff is willing also replace ingredients with other ingredients per request. The shrimp basil is also tasty. The only item I have tried that could use slight improvement is the pad thai that is a little "too" flavorful, but still gets the job done. And the service is quick and reliable, and the server has a great memory of your favorites if you become a repeat customer. It the evenings, there is usually plenty of seating. Why four rather than five stars? This is a solidly good and authentic restaurant with standard American Thai restaurant choices. It is just hard to separate from the pack and be distinguishable as one of the best or have uniquely authentic items. read more

In need of a spicy lunch to quench my cravings, we headed off to the Barn. I always start my Thai restaurant experience with some Papaya Salad...super HOT please, it's the only way to go. The salad is crunchy, fibery, sour, with just enough fish sauce and peanuts to not be overbearing....and oh yeah...aggressively hot with dem thai chilies in there. Pure Yums. Got some spring rolls, yellow curry (chicken) and rice to round out my lunch. Couple bites of some delicious basil prawns too. All very good....served with heaps of courtesy and genuineness. I've been here at least 10 times. When you first drive into the older plaza and see the name is "Barn Thai" you don't expect much. I think that's where this place rocks. Expectations are low every time but the food and service is always good. For a small restaurant they use an electronic method of taking your order. They walk around with a touch screen device to take orders and it sends the details to the kitchen. The pricing on the food is very good, it's about $10 OTD for a lunch special. They also have different Hotness ratings. Thai Hot is very very hot and probably good to experience once, but most will get Hot or Medium. Those that don't eat spicy should get the standard or mild. Try to get there before 1145 during the lunch hours and you're okay. it's not a large place so if you do come later, you can expect a decent wait. read more

Just gave this place another shot. Just to check my impression from this place. Ordered red curry chicken for lunch. 1. They provide a cup of soup as a lunch appetizer. Soup is good (my judgement is biased - I like Asian soups). BTW, no green salad. 2. Water is good. No ice in it, and it is tasty, and it comes in a nice goblet. They most likely process water with a good filtering system. I really enjoyed water here. 3. Red curry. It is not good - smell is a bit hmm... strange. And there was a lot of cheap fat/oil. My stomach is kind of sensitive to bad cheap fats/oils and I have a really uneasy feel in my guts now. 4. Rice was good. Bottom line. No, choose another place. read more

I wasn't impressed. We came here during the lunch hour, and got to the restaurant at 11:30am to beat the crowds. Service was terrible as we didn't get any notice from the two waiters until 15 minutes after we sat. In addition, there wasn't any service questions such as, "How is everything?" during the lunch. The JPP does NOT look spicy but it is quite misleading. I also really enjoy the sour tangy soup they serve before meals. This place wasn't anything special, just a typical Thai restaurant that probably caters to corporate workers in the area. It was also located in a shady-looking complex. For dinner, my bf and I ordered Roti & Curry, Drunken Noodles, and Panang Curry. The drunken noodles were pretty bland. Panang curry wasn't bad, but not filling enough. The roti & curry appetizer was also a relatively small portion. I was particularly bummed that they did not have any of their Homemade Thai Custard Cakes or Mango Jasmine Sticky Rice in Coconut Cream... but hopefully next time? Good neighborhood joint. We always get their spring rolls, papaya salad, basil beef, pad thai, and green curry. Always consistent and really good. Would have given four stars but they could work on a few things. Portion of rice is so little for what they charge. It's never enough for one person and crazy to have to pay $1.50-2 for it. They make a cone shape to make it look bigger. The roti is average and a little overpriced also for such a small piece of dough. The tom yum soup is not flavorful and also a bit pricey for the quantity. Portions are all smaller than average Thai places. Overall I would still recommend this place but avoid some of the things I mentioned. Lunch is pretty reasonable but portion also a bit small. Entrees seem to be best. read more

This is my spot!!!!! I love Thai spicy chicken fried rice and while in search of this great dish during lunch a few months ago, Yelp recently led me to this location. It's in a small mall style complex, with decent parking. Initially walking in, I was hella confused by the decor but I quickly gained perspective and noticed that it was packed to capacity (kinda small and cramped), so I figured at least the food was good. I received my order fairly quickly ($10!), and even though I made many subtractions, it came out accurate and was very tasty! I come here at least twice a month now and there is always the same nice waitress that takes everyone's orders, she even knows my complex order by heart and always gets my meal right. I'd definitely recommend coming here, but hold the judgment once you walk in :) Also I don't eat any other Thai dishes so I can only vouch for the chicken fried rice :) read more

I came here on a weekday night, and it was pretty empty. I ordered what I usually order at Thai restaurants: drunken noodle (pad kee mao), extra spicy. The flavor was very good! The noodles were chewy, and the minced beef was well-flavored. I really wish they had more vegetables though; there were only tomatoes and basil besides the beef and noodles. Usually pad kee mao has more vegetables! Sad. I really enjoyed the flavor though. Another downside was the portion was small for the price; at $9.95 a plate, I thought there would be more. The service was okay, as the waitress came by to ask about our meal. Nice ambiance, menu has the normal Thai dishes, and prices are a bit higher than usual for the quantity. I would give the food 4 stars although -.5 star for price/quantity, service 3 stars, ambiance 3.5 stars. I don't think I'll be back, but I don't regret coming to try it! read more

Great nice little hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurant. It's consistently busy with your Silicon Valley-types at lunch. Food was ok, nothing too memorable. They do embrace that they are in the Silicon Valley, though, with those infrared remote control deals that they use for their ordering system. I think the restaurant wasn't expecting this group or doesn't know how to handle large groups, because service was painfully slow for us (took almost an hour from when we sat down to when we got our food). However, I was most pleasantly surprised by the food given the "meh" rating. We had the: -Tom Yum Soup (with shrimp): Got the "cup", which came in a decent sized bowl. Strong flavors, little bit on the sweeter side, straw mushrooms, and 3 butterflied shrimp. Really enjoyed this. - JPP Crab Fried Noodles: Very awesome. Has a bit of a spicy kick to it. Noodles had the right texture and had absorbed the flavor. Would come back just for this. - Pad Siew Ew: Pretty standard, noodles were al dente and the sauce is sweet. Not sure what the name means, I will read the other reviews to see if that sheds some light on the subject. I had Phad Thai, my benchmark for whether a place is good. There's was OK, fresh ingredients, generous with the tofu and shrimp, but dry. $7.50 for lunch isn't bad though, came with soup and I had Thai iced tea too (perfect). Interior is NICE-- particularly for a strip mall type of place- I'd come back for dinner to try other menu items, it was clean, service was FAST and good, and the other folks were happy with their meals. Food was just so-so. Portions were smaller than other Thai restaurants. Also, they do not have air conditioning, so when it's hot, avoid this place. Came here today for lunch. Lunch specials are generally around $6.95 if you order chicken, beef, or pork for your meat option. Come with soup, egg roll, and a great portion of whatever you may have ordered. I had the green curry and loved it. Creamy with a good kick of spice, I had about half of it and was full. Wasn't a big fan of the soup that came with the meal, but really loved the eggroll! This small restaurant was packed at 12:15. Looked like there were only 3 servers working the tables, so service was pretty slow. A table near us looked really frustrated and told the server that if the food wasn't coming out soon, they wanted it boxed up to go. Nonetheless, the servers were nice, filled up our waters when they had a chance, and the food was really good for the price. Definitely a place worth going back to. read more

If I am what I eat, then I am Thai by now-- at least on the inside. I've been eating at Barn Thai for many years and it's always top notch. The area may not be so inviting, but they've been a staple there forever, no doubt keeping the AMD folks fueled up. Don't let the dodgy stripmall send you away. Lunch time can be quite crowded between noon and about 1:30. If you're part of the lunch crowd splitting your work day, going for the lunch menu may be a good idea. You'll get in and out quickly and it's good stuff anyway (I love yellow curry and the Thai basil dishes). NOTE, the lunch menu is vegetarian friendly, including a veggie soup and eggroll, for those so inclined. The full menu is more expansive and it's all good. I'm a fan of Thai curries in general, as well as the usual stuff (even Pad Thai now and then). All good. I also happen to like the hotter end of the spicy spectrum, so much that I learned the proper words: "Pet Pet" or "Pet Muk" means "extra spicy" and "My Pet" means "not spicy." Thai culture is very eating-centric, so it's against this way of thinking to serve something you don't like or can't eat... if you're unsure, ask for a taste of the sauce or whatever and everybody wins. I would like to start by echoing everyone else's comments on service. These guys really knock it out of the park, and the little PDA-based ordering system is pretty sweet. Decor is nice too. IMHO these things are accents to your primary purpose, which is to consume the cuisine. I found the food here serviceable, and the lunch menu is a good deal, including both soup and a spring roll. Ultimately however I can think of a slew of places I've had better Thai food. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao, and while the flavors were alright, they weren't anything to write home about. The beef was ground and gristly, which is a big turn-off. They do prepare it spicy if you ask for it, which is nice (I can't stand when I get "Caucasian" spicy food when I want "Thai" spicy). read more

The curry was CLEARLY reheated and not fresh, the worst Pad Thai I ever tasted (dry, terrible flavor, also clearly not fresh) and the so called Jasmine rice was just regular sticky rice...also clearly not fresh. The place was empty, not a single other patron so two things; there was no excuse for that caliber of disgusting and low quality food. Two; clearly, they are not known or respected for their dinner service. Given the great reviews for lunch...I expected it to at least be edible. It was not. Disgusting, reheated, inedible garbage. Grabbed take-out pad thai on a Friday for lunch: Ordering: easy, quick, polite. Person on the line says to drop by in 10-15 minutes to pick up. Picking up: I show up 15 minutes later, food is not ready, but no biggie since I'm not in a rush Restaurant: looks promising since it's packed Food: Fiance called it the worst pad thai he has eaten in his life. I thought it was pretty mediocre and really really weird. The noodles were all clumped together and pretty flavorless. Where was the tamarind/fish sauce flavor? I needed like 3 more lemons to make up for the lack of flavors.This pad thai dish was just confusing on so many levels. For one, there were so many vegetables, for example baby corn. I've never had a pad thai with baby corn? The best part of the dish was the egg roll. TL:DR - pad thai is not good. I'd steer clear.
