Passed this by on previous trips to Gold Beach, it seemed tiny and a bit too rustic. But this time we decided to try and went in. It was bigger than it looks, seats about 25-30 but it would be tight. We were off-season, mid-week and early afternoon so only a few were having lunch. And the lunch was great. My wife had a fish sandwich (cod) and she loved it. Great coleslaw too. I had a burger with fried onions, I think fried in beer, can't beat that. Good fries too. I also asked for some freshly made bacon honey mustard sauce that was wonderful. Staff was very nice and took care of us. It could seem a bit pricey but they use only 100% grass-fed beef (great for me) and fresh bread and no iceberg lettuce in sight. A definite repeat visit for us. read more

Stopped by on our drive to Florence for a quick snack and some beers. They have a great selection of local drafts and a really chill atmosphere. Server was extremely accommodating and nice. Seems like this town has limited options for places to eat so within no time this place got pretty packed. Staff kept their cool and took the time to check in with and greet every guest. A table of old timers got up and left after being seated for less than five minutes...but in all honesty whenever the server walked by they were scanning the menu and talking amongst each other. We had lunch here twice in October of last year and had pretty good meals. But, some of the issues we noticed when we were here last time were still present when we had dinner at Barnacles the other night. Of primary concern to me both times I have been here are the way they execute their fries. For a place that hangs it's hat on being a burger and fish & chips kind of joint, and advertise they cut their own fries, they should figure out a better way to prepare them. What you get are grease laden potato straws. Somebody is goofing up the poaching process and they are absorbing too much fry oil. Also, for a burger that was cooked mid well it had a suspicious lack of sear or char, they somehow couldn't manage to melt my cheese and my bun, despite the menu description, was not very brioche like :( Upside, the fried cod for the fish and chips was great albeit served with unhappy fries. Also, last night our service was fairly unfriendly initially-- we walk in and get no smile or greeting from the server. I don't know if they were about to close (7 ish) or what, but definitely off putting. Also, if you have an open kitchen I suggest getting a guy behind the grill that is a little less surly. One last thing is the lighting is terribly bright. A little softening of the overhead lamps would be most welcome. I felt like I was about to be interrogated at any moment. I think the spot is cool and love the idea of it but currently it is being under executed and needs a brush up on cooking procedures and customer service. read more

We wound up in Gold Beach later than expected and after driving through town realized it was this place or pizza if we wanted dinner. When we walked in, the guy behind the counter says, "We're closing in 20 minutes". "Ummm-okay, should we leave?" "NO, I'm just saying we are closing in 20 minutes." After exchanging confused glances we sat down. We had our 3 children ages 2-8 and our oldest child's friend who was spending the night with us, so 4 children under the age of 10. We ordered our drinks then looked at the menu. Everything was relatively pricey when comparing it to the atmosphere, but sounded good the way it was worded on the menu. I looked the menu front to back and found no kid's menu. My husband asked what we should order the kids and we thought the quesadilla might work, without the pepperjack cheese. The waiter who was lingering nearby said that they were out. So the only other kid-friendly option was a $9 Grilled cheese sandwich. Kind of pricey for a child, but we figured we would make it work with some fries. The sandwiches come with either soup or cole slaw, we knew the kids would not like those choices, so we asked the waiter if we could substitute that for fries. Simple, right? Apparently not, he said he was not 'allowed' to do that. We realized that this establishment was just not kid friendly. We told him we had to leave. The waiter was apologetic for not being able to make it work for us, and encouraged us to write a review on their website so hopefully they could expand and offer a kid menu, but none the less, it was not a fun experience. read more

I would definitely return here the next time I am in Gold Beach. Tightly packed little restaurant serving a lot of food made from scratch, locally sourced, and no farm raised fish. The burgers looked amazing, everything from the size to the sesame topped bun. I ordered the fish n chips. The fish was perfectly flakey and the fries were made in-house. I chose the garlic fries! There were vegetarian options that looked good. Some Brazilian influenced fish dishes on the menu. Not your typical small city diner, way better! If you're in a hurry, might not be the best place though. You can order to go though... Oh, their appetizers looked good too, steamed mussels or clams in wine, garlic, butter sauce. I feel a bit decieved! My wife and I stopped in Gold Beach on the way to Seattle from San Antonio and had dinner at this bistro! I ordered the polish beer bomb($13) and my wife had the roast beef dip($12.50), we got a small curly fry and a small sweet potato fry($2.75ea), and a stein of beer($7). Dinner ended up costing $43, a bit high for the experience. When we got our plates they didn't have the sides of coleslaw, We told the waitress who told the cook/owner, and he replied "I ran out of room on the plate". Also, we had to let the waitress know we got our food and no fries. She told the cook/owner who said, "oh, yeah that is on there". We finally got our fries and slaw, loved the waitress, and decided dude cooking was ridiculous. Sandwiches were awesome, beer was yummy, slaw wasn't worth the effort, fries were not good. We've eaten here once before and tried their burgers and both were very good! My wife remembered the ginger slaw and got it again. Today I had the Wasabi Fish Tacos and they were amazing and full of extraordinary flavors. House made Jalapeño jam, house made Hotsauce, fresh wasabi slaw, perfectly fried and generous portions of Alaskan Cod in a corn tortilla. Simply outstanding! My wife had the Smolt version of the Fish and Chips and they were equally amazing and perfectly cooked! She did say next time we come here she was going to order the fish tacos! I'll likely order them again too! We washed everything down with local Arch Rock Brews. We can't wait to go back! As a side note my wife and I both own two restaurants located in Northern Ca, one of which was featured in 2014 on Food Network's Diners, Drive Ins & Dives and we can tell you with certainty that this joint deserves to be on the show. My wife and I both had locally caught Fish and Chips. They were excellent, some of the best we've ever had. But the service was poor. We had to remind the waiter to bring out the soup before the main course. Plus, he never brought us our silverware (we got it ourselves), never refilled our water glasses, and never followed up to make sure we were happy with the meal. And he didn't bring the check, the other waiter working that day did it for him. A week later we noticed they charged us twice for the meal. I called the restaurant to speak with a manager but was told he wasn't in and they weren't sure when he'd be back. I was able to resolve the double charge through my credit card company. read more

Driving up the coast, it was just a whim to stop here but oh-golly are we glad we did. We asked if they had gluten-free options -- they had plenty so picking something for my husband was easy. The waiter was really helpful, mentioned they cook in non-GMO rice oil and used a lot of organics. He had no idea we own an organic farm a few hours away, but he was speaking our language. I got the bahian cod with coconut and my husband had basil parmesan cod with garlic fries and cole slaw. First, the orders were large and well-priced. The chef understands fish -- it was EXCELLENT, cooked exactly right and good quality. Cole slaw was creative and delicious. Also want to mention the garden salad with organic greens showed lots of care. Grated carrots, red and yellow peppers, purple onions, red and orange cherry tomatoes and crisp cucumbers with a sweet tangy house vinaigrette. We finished dinner off with a slice of berry cheesecake from a local bakery. Not too sweet (like I like it), you could taste the ricotta, very nice blend. Overall a wonderful meal. Couldn't be happier. I am so glad there are restaurants that are catching on that many folks want to eat GMO-free and prefer organics. read more

All 4 of us had fish & chips with sweet potato fries & the fish was perfectly cooked, crunchy on the outside & perfectly cooked. Sweet potato fries crispy & delicious. We wished we'd of found this jewel earlier. When we come back to Gold Beach we will absolutely visit this bistros again! read more

This place is just off base - nothing personal, but they need a chef to come in and set the bar on all their food - down to the fries. :). This place is tiny but cozy. They have burgers, fish, salad and sandwiches. There are a couple mushroom sandwiches that are vegetarian. I tried the mushroom panini with garlic fries and ginger slaw. It was delicious! The best part is actually the homemade "hot sauce" on the table! It is a bit spicy but mostly just adds an incredible amount flavor! I highly recommend trying some. Passing through town on a road trip we needed a great place to grab a bite to eat. We yelped, mapped and were just 20 minutes away. We were starving. We pulled up around 11:57 (lunch time) and they weren't open yet. Shocking. Sign out front read 'Opening at 12 O'clock. So we waited. Few minutes after 12 we stroll up to the front door to interact with the woman who would later be our server. We asked if they were open yet, she said "Let me go ask" and sure shooting they were open. The sign came down and it was an odd interactions - like we were bothering her. We got a window seat. The place inside is just adorable. Feels like a nice water front bar (be it not on the water). The menu was impressive and both dishes just great. My Fiance ordered the fish sandwich and I a burger. The fish perfectly done and the burger full of flavor. The side of fries with my burger were traditional pub fries and to die for. Don't miss out on the garlic fries - they were amazing too. What we couldn't get over throughout our meal was that it appeared we'd rubbed the waitress the wrong way. Locals came in and she seemed more friendly; but maybe it was just me. About an hour or so later neither of us felt great. By North Bend it felt like the food was just sitting in our stomachs. An otherwise five star place (for pub food) gets knocked down to a 3 for waitress and after affects. read more

We were in Gold Beach for vacation and the person at our hotel recommended the Barnacle Bistro, and I'm very happy that he did. The Barnacle is not a large place, maybe 8-10 tables, but the food was excellent. I have tried fish & chips up and down the coast and the fish & chips here are the best I've ever had. The batter was light and crispy and the fish was very fresh. They were not greasy or soggy at all. They come with a huge portion of garlic fries, which I couldn't stop eating. My wife had the mushroom & blue cheese burger and absolutely loved it. She finished off the entire burger before I could ask her for a bite. Our server told us they get most of their food from local farms and seafood markets. The Barnacle was one of the best meals we had during our trip to the coast, so I would highly recommend it. read more

I had a cup of clam chowder and the fish and chips. The clam chowder was very good, thick, garlicky, with big clams and red potatoes. The small portion of fish and chips (3 pieces of fish, coleslaw and a mountain of fries) was fantastic. The fish was high quality, firm and beer battered very lightly. The hand cut fries were excellent. The cole slaw was good (no mayonnaise) but I think it was the last day for it. All in all, very good! read more

This was my favorite restaurant while visiting Gold Beach last week. My husband and I cannot stop talking about the curried mussels! They were so delicious. I had the shrimp and scallop tacos which were really great. They are HUGE tacos, so do not be deterred if you want more that two tacos. It will be more than enough. My husband had a burger that he enjoyed thoroughly. I loved the surf shack atmosphere too! read more

On our way from California to home in Oregon we stopped at this cozy Bistro due to the other Yelp reviews. Wonderful place. Small but everything is hand made, you can see into the kitchen. Husband had the Salmon special ($20ish) which was cooked perfectly, I had a French Dip ($12), one of the best ever. We passed on dessert. Clean, excellent service, chef talked to us to make sure everything was perfect, which it was. We will be back. read more

My husband and I ate here about a year ago and the restaurant earned a 5 star rating and we swore we'd be back. Driving through today, we picked up a takeout menu so we could order on our way in after time at the beach. My man is gluten free so we got the word that the Asian Chicken Salad wasn't on that menu. WOW! KILLER! This is still the BEST place to eat in Gold Beach (or maybe anywhere for a reasonable price). The ingredients and recipes are GOLDEN! Sweet potato fries and spicy sauce are out of this world. Fab choices for carnivores and vegetarians alike: fresh, local...everybody gets to eat something delicious without a pang in the conscience. I wanted to like this place as it was recommended by someone who lives locally. Food was good, fresh but not really special. We were there for dinner and the sun coming in through the windows was really bright. They didn't have any shades or window covering that effectively helped with the glare which really impacted our ability to enjoy our meal. Other patrons were complaining about it. Amazing fish and chips! Everything about this place is fantastic. I brought my 2 kids and my mom. I was a little concerned about the kids because of a previous review, but I was pleased to see that a kids menu had been added. My only criticism is that they were terribly under staffed. The night we were there every table was full, with people waiting, but only one server. To her credit she handled everything with charm, efficiency and grace, but was clearly overwhelmed.
