It was a pleasant hour drive from our home in Coos Bay. We went there entirely on a lark, not knowing what to expect. Their website showed me that we could make an online reservation, but not knowing for sure when we were even leaving home, I left that to chance. When we got there, we were promptly greeted by the hostess. There was seating at the bar, or a table for two in the far corner next to the windows, and we could wait at the bar if we wanted for about 10 minutes. We chose to wait at the door, absorbing the ambience, and we were not disappointed. When we were seated, the waitress was very friendly, and presented us with menus that were almost beyond belief in the quality of the food represented. We both settled for grilled rockfish and clam chowder, a light meal suited to our desire to be good to ourselves. The food arrived and was beautiful, both in its obvious high-quality, but also in its presentation. I'm a stickler for good flatware, and theirs was flawless. The clam chowder was tasty, and full of different ingredients to provide a fun variety of textures in the clams potatoes a bit of corn, etc. The grilled rock fish was a generous fillet, cooked to perfection and presented on a light base of shredded lettuce. The waitress was attentive and knowledgeable, and provided us with a dessert menu that was impossible to make the right choice from, because everything was made in house, including the cinnamon ice cream on the Berry cobbler. We settled for toffee cake and a berry cobbler. Again, generous portions of really fine food, and the waitress cheerfully brought us boxes so we did not have to uncomfortably stuff ourselves with dessert. This is the second time we have eaten dinner at Redfish in Port Orford. It is a lovely, quaint restaurant & bar overlooking the Bay & Battle Rock. You can also watch people walking on the beach & fishing boats. The view is beautiful! We started with the croquettes which they served with a delicious sauce. Then we had the Clam Chowder. Which was also excellent. I compare all Clam Chowder to Ivars, and this one didn't disappoint. I had Clam linguine which was loaded with fresh clams I removed from the shells & a light cream sauce. My husband had the Sable fish, which was sautéed & served with Polenta & olives. Very good he said. Our server was very attentive & made great recommendations for wine, beer and food. We didn't have dessert which looked yummy, but opted instead for an after dinner walk on the beach. I definitely recommend Redfish when you are staying in Port Orford, Gold Beach or Bandon. What a shame, such a beautiful view. Really poor food. Four of us and nobody enjoyed their meal. Scallop app was horrible with the worst gnocchi I've ever had, scallops were not seasoned and the sauce was broken and tasteless. Croquettes were bad. Caesar was ok but bad croutons. Steamer clams were cooked fine but the grey sliced button mushrooms made the broth grey and off putting. Wife had the sablefish and did not enjoy either. Even the kids mac and cheese was bad. Maybe should consider going down in their price point and doing casual food like fish tacos. Not at all worth the $250 I just shelled out for an extremely disappointing dinner. Came here with a party of 11 and were given the best customer service by a young lady server. She went above and beyond in making our experience a memorable one. She even took us out on the patio to make sure we got a family photo out on the deck at sunset! The food was excellent! We got two types of salads and enjoyed both. I'm vegetarian and the chef put together a special plate! I was very impressed by the array of foods prepared for me! Save room for dessert - we had blueberry cobbler, pomegranate lime cheesecake, and toffee bread pudding. Each one was excellent! Great eatery in the small town of Port Orford. We made early reservations just in case it was busy. It wasn't as it was on the early side for dinner. They have a new chef and they really know how to make it work. I ordered the salmon entree and they were able to substitute the side dish for me as it had tree nuts in it. My allergies couldn't abide that. All in all looking out at the ocean and enjoying a great meal with great service was a huge plus. A great stop. This was our second visit here for lunch and this place has a view to die for, overlooking the sea stacks to the south. The menu is brief but the food is well prepared, fresh and the portions are adequate. My only complaint is the service. It was not crowded or close to full both times we are here but felt like they were bothered by our presence. It took at least 5 minutes just to get acknowledged and a glass of water. 5 minutes might not seem like much until your sitting at a table, with empty tables all around, and wait staff is walking by ignoring you. Stopped in for lunch. Nice bistro style setting. Would have preferred patio seating, but it was extremely windy and the patio is open air. Their patio section is apparently dog friendly but I observed patrons walking through the main dining space with their animal to get to the patio. I don't know if there is an exterior access point but there should be. I had the Waygu Beef burger with fries and a Tonic Water with lime which is listed with their soda options. Service was attentive and friendly at first, but the attentiveness declined through the meal, however, the friendliness stayed consistent across the 3 people who helped me at any given point. The food was good. The desserts are overpriced in my opinion. A square of Tiramisu (another table ordered one so I saw the portion size) is listed at $15 when my whole entree was $19. The dessert prices appear to be more of a value when put against the dinner menu prices but would make more sense adjusted for a lunch option. read more

We noticed the establishment when visiting Battle Rock. We have a dog so we're attracted to the outdoor seating. However, since we weren't hungry, decided to wait for another day. I don't know if they allow pets on the patio because when we returned a few days later, the weather conditions were such that we had to eat indoors. Upon arrival, we didn't realize how small the restaurant was inside. The staff member greeted us and advised us that only bar seating was available. Understandable since it was Memorial Day. They were very busy and apparently had unexpected staff shortage but they handled everything graciously and were nice and personable. The cocktail menu had unique selections and quality ingredients. We enjoyed The Battle Rock and The Whale Flower. We had Crispy Oysters, Lamb Shank, and Sablefish, everything was delicious. Clam Linguine wasn't available when we were there so hopefully next visit. The beautiful setting, amazing food and beverage, awesome Chef, and wonderful team of servers, made it an enjoyable experience. We definitely plan on returning, but will make a reservation next time so we can enjoy the view from a table. read more

We ate here a couple of years ago and had a wonderful dinner. The site was beautiful, the service friendly, and the food outstanding. We were excited to be returning. BUT WHAT A LETDOWN! The site is still beautiful, but the service was mediocre and the food was downright bad (though pricey). I had a lamb shank that must have been cooked days before, or left over, then reheated for me (apparently at a very high heat). The shank had a hard, thick, and completely inedible crust of blackened dry meat on the outside, with almost no edible meat remaining on the bone. There was essentially no flavor remaining in the few bites that were palatable. It was truly awful. Moreover, it was served on a hot metal plate, which the waitress forgot to warn me about. So I burned two fingers (she was apologetic, but I was still burned). The two people with me had equally inferior meals. We were genuinely shocked at the dismal quality of the food across the board. Such a shame, since this restaurant was once a treat we had looked forward to. read more

Spent our weekend driving to Oregon with the family. Seen his restaurant since it has a nice exterior and interior with the view of the oregon coast. Kinda expensive, the service is great but the food is not. The pad thai is too sour for me. The elk burger is not good and very dry inside. Their clam chowder is okay since I've tried a really good clam chowder. Only good thing about their food is their clams. Super fresh and has an umami feel to it. We might not go back again. NEVER EVER EVER order the sable fish. Horrible dish with mushy fish and bad flavor. The risotto was a bit hard with too much goat cheese overwhelming it. My friend and I traveled to the Oregon Coast just for a weekend and were staying in Port Orford. Super quaint town, and my friend did some research on some restaurants to try and this one came top of the list per reviews and what not. So of course we came one night for dinner. I'm not gonna lie, walking in, it's one of the nicer places in town and reading the menu we both we both kinda got excited because we had a feeling dinner was going to be fabulous. Unfortunately, it was lackluster. The best part of our night was the beautiful view from the patio and toffee cake, that's seasonal. Other than that, everything else was just ehhh. And for the "fine dining pricing" it was underwhelming. Again the menu looks promising but the execution with flavors and seasoning is just blah. Our waitress was sweet, gave recommendations. They were out of oysters, I would've ordered those. We tried the empanadas, everything presentation wise was beautiful. But taste, these were a 6/10. The sweet potato's were the tastiest thing on this dish everything else just didn't merry well and was lacking seasoning. My friend got the chicken and the only thing that saved the chicken was the Boursin cheese stuffing. Other than that it was a tad dry and the polenta and veggies were bland. I got the lamb shank per the waitress' recommendation. Looked amazing, but the lamb didn't really fall off the bone, and there was absolutely no flavor. I swear someone forgot to add salt or any seasoning to the au jus or lamb. The potatoes were ok and the broccoli was just steamed with no seasoning either. We were just expecting to be wowed by amazing flavors, especially with the great reviews, and Oregon having a reputation of amazing food, but this was anything but. We did chat with a local later in the week and he told us that when it first opened it was amazing with great chefs, but after awhile the amazing chefs moved to bigger cities and the food just hasn't been the same. Maybe they had a bad day when we came in, but it wasn't our favorite meal. read more

Redfish is one of the best restaurants on the southern coast and has always been a favorite of mine. They have gone through some recent menu changes that leave me with questions (see the awful hamburger picture from their limited "pre-dinner" menu) , but they also produce some lovely dishes. I would recommend arriving for lunch or dinner and avoiding their "in between time" unless you want to enjoy some drinks before receiving the full menu. Reservations are also very helpful as they are small and spots are often called in advance. read more
