Not joking , you will get gourmet food at a bookstore's kitchen. Seriously some of the best bites I've had in some time . The B&N Kitchen delivers on every aspect of what you may expect to find in a typical high end restaurant. Although their menu is restrained, the handful of dishes they do offer are prepared well. On my last visit , I had the chance to enjoy the bricked cooked chicken and the burger , with a side of sautéed broccoli. Oh mylanta, everything was mouthwatering !! Both the chicken and burger was seasoned and cooked so perfectly! So delicious! The quality of the dishes that are being served can justify the rather higher then anticipated prices. We love this place!!! I have yet to dine at their restaurant, but we do get snacks and drinks from the cafe, and they frequently give us drink and snack coupons. We are members of the bookstore and use our membership card to rack up points and get a reoccurring discount. The staff, guys! The staff! They are really helpful and quick at finding books for me. It's also particularly fun when they suggest books when I'm asking them questions. They are never in a rush, which I really like. It's classy as well, with the ardonak (?) chairs. My mom likes their individual stall bathrooms. They are rather large and away from everyone. So if you are like us and always need to find the bathroom on your long shopping days, they're nice. May I add, that the Young Adult Y/A book section has been knocking my socks off? read more

It's beyond anything I've ever had, it huge and satisfying, and your version of fries are awesome. My husband got one of the other specials - fish & chips - and is also hoping for it to find a home on the menu. His only reservation was it came with two pieces, not three, of fish, but it was also top grade white cod. My friend and I tried this tonight. Wasn't actually expecting much since it's a restaurant inside of a bookstore. Boy were we surprised. The food we really, really good. The prices were reasonable. And the service was fantastic. We had bruschetta as an appetizer. It was delicious. Nice combo of balsamic, tomatoes, garlic, and cheese. I had oven brick chicken with mash potatoes. Simple but great. Cooked perfectly. My friend had BBQ ribs. Aside from being huge they were also cooked very well. So tender the meat just fell off the bones. I had a glass of Pinot as well that was very good I recommend this place. Come read some books then have a bite. read more

Very cool spot! As far as ambience goes, it beats the pants off of any other Barnes and Noble cafe I've ever eaten at or grabbed a coffee from. Lots of seating out front and inside, lots of cool art hung up throughout the interior, and very cool, open seating that makes the cafe area feel sleek and welcoming. In terms of decor, this is the coolest looking spot I've been to in the last couple weeks for sure! They've got a few craft beers on draft, which is cool. All local options, with the farthest being Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas, but it was cool seeing Out of Bounds and Dust Bowl represented among their selection. The menu lists the brewery but not the specific beer on tap, which is kind of odd. We figured out the selection together for the unmarked tap handles, but it took a minute. On to the food: absolutely delicious! Great visual representation, awesome melding of flavors. I grabbed the kale salad and added chicken and was definitely satisfied with my choice. Chicken was seasoned excellently and the apples and raisins in the kale salad were a welcome addition that juxtaposed sweet with savory. This spot's only getting four stars because they seemed a little under staffed. Everyone was great, and friendly, but the separate plates came out at different times and it seemed like there were a decent amount of guests for the staff to attend to. Very likely a busier than normal Tuesday - I was surprised by the turnout. Otherwise, excellent experience, and I'm looking forward to checking out more of the menu on my next visit. read more

When I first came here a couple years ago I was obsessed. Their food is generally pretty tasty! And feels pretty fresh, not like typical stale cafe food. But the service has been steadily declining. Have very low expectations when eating here. I have had to wait nearly 40min for an iced tea on one occasion because the waitress "forgot" and then proceeded to forget to check in on our table. We had finished our food and had to sit there for another 30min before she remembered we existed. Also, if you order food from the cafe and sit in the communal study area, YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR DIRTY DISHES TO THE COUNTER. Not a bad thing, but they don't tell anyone that. So if you don't do it, they won't pick it up for literal hourssssssss and the people who sit there after you have to deal with it, which is not nice. Be a nice human and clean up after yourself! Other than that, it's a great spot and the food is pretty darn good overall. Hard to go wrong. I think the only dish I wasn't super impressed by was the mac n cheese. It was reallyyyy bland. I ate at the Barnes & Noble cafe and I like their food however i've had unusual experiences with the staff multiple times. The last time I had eaten I ordered a mac and cheese at the kitchen and they brought out a grilled cheese and I told the server I asked for a mac and cheese and she kept gaslighting me and saying I didn't say mac and cheese I said grilled cheese when I ordered. I've gotten a mac and cheese every time and I didn't know they even served grilled cheeses so I'm pretty sure this is not the case. Anyways they didn't end up getting me what I actually ordered and the grilled cheese was double the price just for something I didn't even want. Sunlight filtered through the windows lit up a pretty and tasty salmon fillet I ate here with my mom and between the nicely decorated room, ample space and good food, it made for a peaceful and pleasant dining experience! The salmon was good, and it was a healthy lunch that was attended to by our polite and knowledgeable waitress. I liked the glass milk bottle type pitcher that they use to serve water and the fact that they leave it on the table with you makes it convenient for refills. You can sit at a table or at the bar, and the entire space is open and welcoming. The bookstore/restaurant also has a large number of restrooms, which is nice since the bookstore side is also a decent size. There is a free parking garage or parking spots in front of nearby stores, making it easy to run in and grab a drink or fulfill any hunger pangs. For those coming into the store after work, they offer happy hour at the bar and have fun specials that I'd like to take advantage of as well. This was our first visit To The Barnes & Noble Kitchen and it was unquestionably the best food we've had here yet. The tomato soup and grilled cheese are the best I've ever had without a doubt. The soup was on par with anything you would find at a 5 star restaurant, it was light, full of flavor and drizzled with tasty olive oil. The sandwich was grilled perfectly with more than one cheese, all very fresh and tasty. This place has gone downhill. It used to be a great spot to order a glass of wine at the bar and have a surprisingly amazing appetizer like the hummus or guacamole. I used to take the kids here for an amazing little special meal. No longer. You used to be able to sit down and order a glass of wine at the bar and a nice meal. Now, you have to go to the register like you're at a Starbucks and try to figure out what glass of wine you want standing in line with other people getting coffee. Then you pick up a number and find a seat. It takes about 15 minutes for them to get your glass of wine, which they have in the back kitchen now, no longer at the bar. What's the point of having a bar if all of the bottles of wine are in the back kitchen? Although I have been disappointed in the past six months coming here, I decided to try it again tonight. Big mistake. It took at least a minimum of 15 minutes to get a simple glass of Chardonnay from the back kitchen, and the hummus took a long time to come out. When it did, the vegetables were not fresh and the hummus was watery, a far cry from the service and food that used to be here when it opened up. I don't know what's happened to this place, but it's such a disappointment now. When I got my food, two couples came in as well and sat down next to me. They waited so long for someone just to come near the cash register or the bar area that they all contemplated leaving. I told them to hang on, someone would be there eventually but even after they order a glass, it will take a minimum of 15 minutes for them to bring it from the back kitchen. They waited and waited and waited. Finally they flag someone down who said a server will be with them in a minute. They asked them "well you look over 21, can't you take our wine order?" This person said yes I'm 32. And he begrudgingly took their order. 20 minutes later, these couples are about to leave and their wine finally came out. We share a laugh when I said I told you so. The wine pours are terrible. I didn't complain the first time, and I would have the second time but it was marginally better. One of the people next to me was upset when their wine came out. I saw it being carried to them and knew that was a ridiculously small pour. She sent it back, and the manager came over. Their bill was wrong, they were up charged, however they did fix her poor slightly....Also, no one is cleaning up. The same dirty dishes were there the entire time I was seated with my wine and appetizer, about 90 minutes. I finally moved the gross dishes out of my way onto another table. Right off the bat, if you charge me $3 plus tax for a soda, I expect fountain with refills, not a novelty bottle from Mexico. Whatever. My grilled cheese was melted enough, but dripping in oil. The tomato soup literally had oil sludge in a design at the top....is adding oil to a soup a new trend? I fear for my stomach. I sat in the dining area yesterday (2/4/19) at exactly 4pm with my laptop on the table, hot tea and the cinnamon roll that I ordered in the front. I was going to use your outlet just like I did before twice (same spot). However, this time there's a note that says, "Not for public use" and that's totally fine BUT... Before I even read the sign, one of your workers came up to me and pointed it out. I told her "Okay" (I was just not going to use it). Even a kitchen staff, who was facing the dining area, saw me sitting there cuz the kitchen was wide open.. enough for me to hear her tell the other worker "....that girl" and she was definitely referring to me since you had no customers other than me and the two folks trying to enjoy their meal. No one came so I got up, walked towards the kitchen door, and asked for the menu. A server came to me with the menu and told me that customers have to "wait to be seated". I apologized and ordered whatever is quick to make and easy to eat, your $15 Chicken Ceasar Salad! After I placed my order, I heard one of your kitchen staff tell someone (most likely my server) "Extra salad dressing?" and laughed. I DID NOT REQUEST FOR THE EXTRA SALAD DRESSING! I was upset so if that was a just joke, it wasn't funny. Although I didn't have any appetite because of how upset I was, I ate some and took the rest home because I didn't want to waste the food. 1. Please discipline your workers. 2. Please put a sign that we can't use our laptop dining area. If it was busy, I wouldn't have sat there in the first place because I know how it is to not have enough tables for guests. 3. Your food is expensive so I expected a better service and be treated with respect. I do have a serving experience and the service I got from you guys doesn't deserve any stars. I was the one who started a conversation with the server. Didn't even check if I liked the food. This might be the best hamburger I've had so far. We started with the Burrata as an appetizer. It's a huge chunk o delicious cheese, marinated tomatoes and thick toasted bread with a pesto sauce. Total comfort food and generally awesome. Then came the hamburger. O.M.G. The chef swung by our table so I asked him what kind of magic fairy sprinkles he put on it. He waxed poetic about the mouth feel of butter lettuce, the perfect salt content of Heinz pickles, specific onions he used, the soft yet slightly sweet bun. I'm going to try to replicate it at home because it's really set a new bar. Everyone has different tastes though, would love to know what you think. The beer selections are great too BTW. My reaction to this whole experience was A-OK because the service and food were both just alright. I came during lunch on a weekday, it was pretty empty so I was seated immediately. I have been SO excited to try this place - it's been on my watch-list since it opened and I love the concept of it. Inside, the decor is lovely and modern, with a lot of wood and succulents all around. It is a little small (I couldn't really "squeeze" into my seat because the table next to me was so close) but I mean I feel like I see it as more of a "cafe" style even though it is supposed to be a restaurant, so I didn't really mind that. I ordered: Burrata with Sundried Tomatoes and Toast ($13): A special they were having for beer week, I think the beer week specials run from March 2 - 12 and the appetizers associated with the week are all half off. So I got the burrata for $6.50, which was very worth it! The sundried tomatoes and pistou were all delicious and well portioned, the burrata was very rich and creamy - would recommend this dish for sure! Brick Cooked Chicken with Potato Puree and Watercress ($18): The chicken had slightly crisp skin and was also just a little bit too rubbery and dry for me, unfortunately. It was really pretty to look at but flavor wise it just tasted very basic. The potato puree was a bit bland and oily. Watercress was just a garnish - don't put something as a main ingredient if you're going to give me four little stalks of it LOL this was definitely my least favorite dish in the bunch. Kale Salad with Apple Cider Vinaigrette ($14): I liked this salad but the apple cider notes were REALLY sharp - it's like the vinaigrette was just the vinegar itself. There were apples, raisins, almonds, cotija cheese in the salad and I think chicken would have been $3-4 extra. I know I'm being nitpicky here because it's like, salad, but there were WAY too many raisins in there - it was like weirdly sweet with a sharp vinegar taste - and then there was romaine lettuce and kale together which was pretty meh. I mean as a whole it was just okay, ingredients were fresh, just could've tasted better! Would recommend you ask for the dressing on the side. The burrata came out first followed by the brick cooked chicken + kale salad at the same time. Our server was attentive if not a little bit too hover-y, I think since it's a newer restaurant that's forgivable though, it seemed like she really wanted us to enjoy the food. In total not including tip the meal was $39. So around $24 per person for an appetizer, a salad, and an entree post-tip. Anyway, I'm probably going to come back to try the dessert and the drinks but so far I'm just okay with this place. Would recommend that burrata at the discounted price though, I think I would've paid $13 for that alone too, it was great! I think this is a good place for the novelty of eating in a bookstore/taking very aesthetically pleasing photos of food, but it just didn't hit a chord for me. It's a little too pricey for the quality of the food I've tried so far and the service is just okay. Hopefully the next visit I'll find something I like that's worth it! read more

Best parking I found was the covered parking/garage across the street (Right behind Panera Bread). Walking over towards the entrance, it is pretty welcoming. There was a menu outside, as well as a sign that said to see Host inside for Seating. As I walked in, I saw the bar and a few waiters (or would it be baristas?)...However, I didn't see a host. :-/ I asked a young woman who was making drinks so elegantly, and she explained the difference between the open seating, where to order, and offered to seat me on the other side if I wanted to be seated and served. Of course I wanted to be served, so I waited until she finished making and serving her drinks. A few minutes later, a server came by and took my order. I came here to study and eat--figured a bookstore + food = a good spot to study, right? Meh - FOOD & DRANK -- Lemonade -- not too bad. I have had better. But it certainly tasted fresh. Contrary to the numerous reviews discussing how eagerly the wait staff refilled their drinks...that didn't quite happen. I almost thought I may have missed the sign that said they won't serve water due to drought unless we asked...BUT--didn't see one. -- Hummus -- beautiful plating! FRESH! Really good. And yes, comparable to hummus you would likely fine in any Persian restaurant. Crispy cheese cracker thingamajigs tasted good, too. Veggies tasted fresh and were perfectly prepared--not too crunchy, and not too mushy. -- Brisket Burger -- Ah--I had high expectations after reading reviews from my fellow yelpers. The plate, again--was plated BEAUTIFULLY. The Burger- I wasn't impressed. The meat tasted fresh. Yet was seasoned with way too much seasoning....Ever had so much salt or seasoning on your meat, that it almost tasted like a chemical? O_o...The cheddar cheese that was melted on the burger was fresh and yummy, too! Yummy fresh pickles with the perfect crunch, butter lettuce leaves, mayo, ketchup...and the buns...While it looked yummy, by the time I picked it up to eat, the burger was slippery and wet :-/...Buns were very butter and had a croissant-like texture. A little too buttery for my taste buds, unfortunately. -- THOSE POTATOES THOUGH! -- OMG The best I have ever had. The burger came with a side of crispy, yummy, potatoes. Seasoned brilliantly with a slight crunch with every bite. This is a MUST! While the rest of the food was alright--if I ever came back, this is what I would most definitely order again. ENVIRONMENT Very upscale and classy. Elegant, nice woodsy feel with some awesome interior decorating. For a bookstore, the music was pretty darn loud. I intended to come here to study...but didn't get much done. Free wifi is awesome. One of those places you could get work done that does not require much thinking. CUSTOMER SERVICE While I had high hopes with how I was greeted and seated, service thereafter was not quite mind-blowing. The server was quick to take my order and bring the food out...and that was about all I got. No checking in for how the food was, if I wanted another drink, water, etc. Is it wrong to expect this if I am spending $30+ for just my meal? She dropped off the check half way through my meal and said there was no rush. Hmm--what if I wanted to order dessert and coffee after? There was a reason why I asked to keep the menu. LOL So I dropped my visa card a minute later and waited about 20 minutes for her to come back. I asked for a box (because I had so much food left over still)...and she dropped it off...Honestly, did not seem like she cared. At one point, I counted a total of 6 wait staff hanging out at the bar area...umm hello? Overall--I had an ok experience. Perhaps I'll give this spot another try later. Expensive! We came here because of a newspaper article in the Sacramento Bee. I'm glad we came, it was a fun outing. Parking: No close handicapped parking. No close parking at all. This is a real issue for us as it's quite a long walk when you are unsteady on your feet. Food: Delicious. I would eat here again if it weren't for the location and price. I love you can take your drinks to go and walk around the store drinking whatever you ordered. They also allow you to bring the merchandise to the food area so you can read while eating. I love the concept. I wish it was closer to downtown. I am sure the price point of the food is perfect for the location. read more

Hi I went to B&N yesterday (9/3/22) with my daughter and had lunch after shopping. The waitress that sat us was very nice and the food was good but we had terrible service from our server. She was: rude, condescending, and inappropriate. She was making strange comments about how we were eating and laughing to herself. She gave me a very hard time about ordering extra lettuce? I don't care if I'm charged extra for an item I just want what I ask for without and argument. I ordered the French dip without bread so needed extra lettuce to eat it. ...I sent this message to Barnes and Nobles 4 different times and they did not respond once. 12/30/17 @ 5: 30 pm, my family planned to watch a movie in the evening so we specifically wanted to eat dinner and have drinks at Barnes n Nobles since we liked the food. When we sat at the bar, the counter had not been cleared so I scooted the items over to the end. A younger, tall Caucasian male was behind the counter and saw us sit down at the bar area but did not even say one word to us and walked around the counter and cleared the stuff from the bar counter. He did not look at me or say one word, As he walked away, I said hi and he said, oh, do you want a menu? I said yes please --so he handed me a menu. He went back to cashier and started taking orders and making drinks. He never once acknowledged us, wiped the counter down and we sat there for almost 15 minutes and the line for drinks continued to grow. Since were waiting, I took Clorox wipes out of my purse and wiped the counter down during our 15 min wait. It was obvious we were not going to get served, so we left. I tried calling to advise a manage so they could correct this but no luck. I read the other reviews just now and realize this appears to be a common theme lately. I hope they fix this issue since the first time we went we had a great waiter which made us want to go back. read more

First experience at B&N Kitchen was wonderful. I had mixed vegetable salad (no lettuce) with salmon and it was to die for. Came with green goddess dressing on the side, which, while superfluous, was quite delicious itself. DH had avocado toast with perfectly scrambled eggs & just enough, since he has a cold & has not been too hungry. Our friend had brick chicken, puréed potatoes & a taragon sauce that vanished quickly, so I believe it was as good as my dish. It looked moist & I only heard nom nom nom fron that side of the table. Our waiter was spot on for sales, delivery and out of box thinking. Only complaint was our table top rocked like a boat in a storm. It Was not the footing, the top itself needs tightening, but, alass, we had no tools & were too busy eating to service the table. Definitely will return. Very tasty ingredients but price value lacking. $16 burger and fries $15 chopped salad. Burger smaller than most at our favorite places, but the potatoes crispy and seasonings and cotija crumbled cheese that was top notch. Meat quality and flavor very good. The salad and dressing was amazing with specialty items like Chinese broccoli, pine nuts and several legume varieties. Included eggs beets and many tasty things. Again if the price were about 25% less or the portions that much bigger I would be here frequently. read more

Brunch. Up sides were it wasn't crowded (so not too loud) when we got there 1030am on a Saturday and the food was good. Downsides our food came out at vastly separate times, rather than holding it all till once. I finally had to start eating rather than wait for the whole table to get served and by then the eggs were cold. Did not offer coffee refills, that seemed hard to come by. read more

When you think bookstore, you probably don't think gourmet meal. I know that was the last thing on my mind when I discovered the Barnes & Noble Kitchen. My younger days were spent loitering the back end of bookstores, hurriedly sneaking bites from a sandwich hidden in my jacket so I didn't have to actually buy anything. Now that I'm an adult, I no longer need to relive my broke high school days and can openly rejoice in the fact that there is food aplenty right next to all that wonderful literature. I was rather full when I first came across this concept but there was no way I would have left without trying some of the food. The menu is packed with goodies and comfort foods. It all comes courtesy of someone who I had heard quite a bit about in food circles - executive chef Sheamus Feeley. I tried a selection of appetizers and every one was a standout hit. The avocado toast, piled high with fresh avocado and scrambled eggs, was the perfect remedy for the all-day breakfast lover in me. The hummus, served with market vegetables and a crunchy lavash toast, was as tasty as anything you'd find in a middle eastern eatery. My favorite though was the burrata: the freshest Italian cheese, pistou (an olive oil--based basil sauce from the south of France) and toast. It was so fresh I had to wonder if there was a cheese-making factory in the back end of the bookstore. Barnes & Noble continues to innovate with the times. Their Kitchen concept is a wonderful idea and something that I think will really catch on. Next time you visit the Palladio, be sure to make your meal plans here! read more

I popped in here to read some of my new book and grab a glass of wine. While here, I was treated exceptionally poorly by one of the staff members. So much so that the client I was speaking with on the phone was taken back by the woman's aggressiveness and tone. The woman knew I was on the phone and didn't care to be polite. She blurted into my face, quite loudly, in a very blurty way. I myself do not appreciate blurts if any kind, and it was clear that she was one of the most blurtatious woman I've encountered up to that point in my life. Naturally, this did not bode well. She wasn't even my waitress. Why was she trying to ruin my life in that moment? But I digress, this is a daam business... Bottom line - this staff needs to learn proper professionalism. As I told the gentleman who finally collected payment from me, I would never bring a client or a colleague I'm looking to impress here based on this experience. Though honestly, aside from the aggressive and rude staff, this place actually is pretty impressive. read more
