The best French dip sandwich ya ever did see!!!! Brown gravy to dip your fries in and the house blue cheese dressing is so good.

My grandfather discovered this place many decades ago.This has been a go-to place for our barbeque ever since. The place is a simple diner--used to be a lady with a beehive hairstyle working there. There is one thing we almost always get here---barbequed pork open face sandwich with lots of outside. My grandfather used to ask them "Are you going to put some MEAT on that?" but there is no need to worry----the amount of meat you get on a sandwich is huge!! The pork sandwich lots of outside has really big chunks of pork, with a well-seasoned brown sauce that seems to contain some type of alcoholic drink .Very tasty sauce .There seems to be a lot more pork in these sandwiches than they used to have, and the white bread they are on pretty much flattens and disappears. FRies and a pickle come with it. The fries are nice and thick. This is great for takeout as well. read more

if your expecting a delicious, finger linking good bbq experience that requires tons of napkins to wipe away the falvorful bbq sauce that is perfectly slathered over your ribs, or even sandwich.....well don't come here! We ordered the ribs and sirlion plate to go, and when i opened it the meat had no sauce or seasoning over it. The only good thing about this experience was that the meat was surprisingly tender. However, that was completely overlooked as the "bbq" sauce, that came separately, is essentially a brown, runny gravy that has no zest or flavor to it. Honeslty, i ate one rib and just couldn't go back for more. Their sides are limited..apparently just fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw wasn't bad, but fries were bland and limp. yuck, no thanks. That's great that this place is a true local spot and has been around for years, but there is some serious updating that needs to happen to the food here. They need to step up and get some real bbq sauce and marinate their meat in it. I say add some seasoning to the bland fries, post their menu online and make sure that brisket or pulled pork is on the menu ( they had neither of those available). WHOOHOO! Starving in Concord the other day, I was passing the usual line of taco joints and chinese restaurants when when what to my hungry eyes did appear but Barney's Hickory Pit! I circled it's, uhh, "rustic" charms twice, trying to get a glimpse of the interior and perhaps some hickory or a pit. I didn't see either so parked out front and headed in. The ancient (this joint was built in 1957) bbq stained paper menus offered a slightly confusing selection of items, but it certainly looked like a traditional bbq restaurant underneath it all: beef, pork, ribs and chicken. A pork fan, I am informed by the very nice and helpful waitress that all the meat is sliced (not pulled). There is also the traditional sauce, which is pretty much a surprising and interesting dark brown gravy. However they also have a "new" red sauce, which is a very good tomato-based, slightly thick, slightly vinegary and spicy sauce. More traditional. You can get both free on the side, so I did. I preferred the red sauce, but I can see the draw of the brown. It would have been good with some fries up in Canada. I got my sliced pork on white bread, though there are some non-traditional options which I stayed away from (rye, french roll, etc.) It was DELICIOUS! The sides didn't seem quite up to stuff (at least to my southern born specs). The coleslaw was the a medium cut and mix of veggies, but there was no sauce of any sort that I could discern, either mayonaise base or vinegar based. I absolutely love good coleslaw and I couldn't even finish this. The fries were commercial/frozen, though I didn't order any personally, just saw them in the back. It's a family owned business since 1957, and the original Barney's old photo is on the wall, and his son is now manning the grill and bricked in pit. Can't wait to go back. I saw many huge slabs of ribs going into the pit while I sat there. I look forward to trying some other items but I'm such a pork sandwich fan... Beer is available. read more

The host was very nice and asked if we needed anything and was attentive. My husband and I decided to stay for dinner instead of ordering to go. We get out table and the waitress comes up to the table very sweet she takes our drink order. She returns with our beverages and asked if we are ready to order. I said I had some questions and asked out the single meat plate and the combination plate. She began to explain the difference and what comes with both plates. After hearing the description my husband said he would like the combination plate with an extra side. I said I would like the combination plate as well. And reiterated that's 2 combination plates and I'll try the potato salad and he said his two sides. She put the order in. When it was time to bring the food. The waitress brought one plate, my sides , sauces and the two sides my husband requested. We thought maybe she had to go back and get the other plate but then just looked at us and asked if there was anything else she could get us. I asked where the other plate was? She said oh you wanted two. We said yes , she wrote everything down so was a bit confused why only one plate came out. She walked back to put the order in but we figured that's going to be another 10-15 mins. We had a long day at work and both hubby and didn't want to wait. My husband already had a bad experience today so we left. Better luck next time I guess . read more

I think it is strange they show 14 reviews on Yelp after 50 years and tens of thousands of regular customers. Is Yelp hiding business reviews? A greasy spoon with great care taken to smoke their meat. Sauce on or off is the big question. The ribs are perfect and a junior order is sufficient for a 200lb man. The fries are homestyle and crispy. I have only ordered the brown sauce and from a look around so did everyone else. The red sauce is available but I have never seen it after a 100 visits to Barney's read more

Have been going to Barney's in Concord for 40 years plus and the Antioch location when it was open. Always getting the ribs with brown sauce. Have noticed over the years their quality has been slipping. Made the mistake of stopping today for the Jr Ribs to go. $17.00 later with the only 4 ribs now, which I guess was a hidden blessing, I got 4 meaty ribs alright , that were cooked yesterday if not the day before. Pretty lame if you ask me. Customer service here is terrible, no smiles, not a friendly face or voice to be seen or heard. My wife and I came here after doing some antiquing and decided to have a bite to eat. I got the Cherry pie a la mode and she got the combination plate. Needless to say, the pie wasn't homemade the combination plate meat was good but not $16.00 good. The barbecue sauce tastes like someone dropped cigarette ash in it after fishing it out of the toilet. I won't be coming back here, not only for the service and the food, but the overall cleanliness of the restaurant. Every table was sticky. You want customers? Try putting a smile on and being nice to the customers that are paying for your overpriced food. It was my first time there and no one said hi to me, or welcomed me. I got a BBQ beef sandwich in regular white bread. With some BBQ sauce on the side along with their house "ranch" and some fries. There was nothing special about the sandwich. It was very bland in taste. I've had a lot better. The fries were okay, but again have had much better. Their BBQ sauce was okay. Nothing like an original BBQ sauce should be like. They don't have ranch so I got their house ranch. It had a weird taste to it. I did not like it at all. I came to this place very excited to have some authentic BBQ. But was greatly disappointed. When I payed with my credit card, they didn't even ask for my I'd! 2 stars for the fast service however. This has to be the worst BBQ I have ever had. Now, I love BBQ and eat it every chance I get. This should not be called BBQ. This should not even be called edible. My partner and I stopped in for lunch. We both ordered sliced beef with the brown sauce. We ended up walking out. The sauce tasted like liquid smoke mixed with salt water. This place is disgusting, I had the worse experience ever, prices are ridiculous and it says it in the menu, they are concerned about the quality of the food, not the prices but heck no! the quality of the food is atrocious!. This place was recommended by a co-worker for ribs. I came here last night for their pork ribs. I ordered a junior platter which came with about 5-6 ribs. I ate half and brought the other half home. There was a lot of meat on the ribs. There was two sauces for the ribs.. a brown gravy like sauce and a red, more traditional bbq sauce. I really liked the red sauce. The ribs itself wasnt really satisfying... I LOVE ribs.. so I'm hard to please. Especially since I go to Ribfest in Reno every year.. so Ive tasted ribs from the best around the Country. My friend ordered the beef plate. It was okay also. All in all, we ordered 1. junior size ribs with fries, 2. beef plate with fries 3. a side order of coleslaw for $30 bucks not including tip. I think that's a lil pricey for what we got. The old ambiance didnt gross me out... but this place does need a revamp. I'm not going to go back to this place for ribs or bbq. read more

I came here with a friend that recommended this place. I've lived in Concord all my life and never been here before so I was excited to try a local bbq joint besides kinders. Unfortunately, even just looking at the menu, I wouldn't call it bbq. When I go to a bbq place I expect to see ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and smoked chicken among other things. There's nothing like that here. It's more like grilled meat with bbq sauce on top. The menu has sliced steak, sliced pork, sliced turkey, etc. I had the chicken dinner plate. I'm pretty sure they bake the chicken and then throw it on the grill and char the hell out of it. It was completely unseasoned and bland as all hell. The only taste I got out of it was the burnt skin covering the meat. The bbq sauce they served it with was also bland and tasteless. I don't know if this place used to be better, but it's not somewhere I'd ever go again when there is plenty of good bbq spots in the area to go. read more

Been coming here for years. First off, if you're looking for BBQ along the lines of Back 40 this is not the place. The sauce here is reminiscent of the old Emil Vilas brown sauce/gravy. My girlfriends dad took me here for lunch the other day. IT WAS GOOD. We had the Double Pork Ribs with fries and cole slaw. The cole slaw was small. Wished they had bigger portions cause all 3 of us shared. Also the fries were amazingly good! Now on to the ribs! The ribs were good! The sauces they had were good too (forgot the names of the sauce) your thinking 11 ribs for 3 people is nothing. We had like 4 left overs. It was A LOT of food. Will definitely come back here. I have been going to Barneys since I was in my mommas tummy. So that means over 59 years. Most people that have lived in Concord a long period of time appreciate Barneys. It's not for everyone and we that love it don't care. Just don't eat there then. No need to bad mouth the place. Any way. Any one that has been going to Barneys for years hates and notices when the change anything. I mean I even noticed when they change the crackers from Waverly Waffers to whatever it is they use now. I'm surprised that restaurants don't realize this. I mean how much can you save on Crackers. I don't know, maybe the got a new supplier and couldn't get Waverlys any more? Any way. They have changed ownership and have tried to stick with tradition. Not quite as good as before. They have made small changes. None for the better of course. But happy they are one of the few places that still remains from my childhood days. It's a wonderful thing they are still around. If I were a rich man, I would buy the place and restore it to the way it was in the '60's. read more

Another old interior that hasn't changed in decades. This is not a TEXAS BBQ joint, it's more like a Hofbräu. I've known of this place since my parents took me often as a toddler. If you haven't already everyone needs to try an open face turkey sandwich with brown sauce and fries. Beef and pork are equally good on that sandwich. Disappointing. Bbq sauce tasted like ketchup with salt and a few spices in it. Absolutely nothing like bbq sauce. Meat wasn't bad but wasn't cooked to my request. Not even when i asked for another meal because the one slathered in "bbq" tasted horrible. But the jalapeno poppers were great and the French dip was okay. Server was new and not very knowledgeable about the menu nor was she diligent in returning with answers to our questions. Just generally inexperienced. Won't be coming back unfortunately.
