We came here for dinner, and ordered to go. I ordered ribs and my girlfriend had chicken. The meat was cooked wonderfully and the sides were just as tasty. I particularly enjoyed the spicier BBQ sauce they offered, which is better then most of the competitors. I have food left over and feel like I got a lot for my money. After I relocated from San Francisco, I simply had to find a neighborhood breakfast house that had that neighborhood appeal - a place to read the paper, drink good coffee, eat great food, and enjoy a friendly, personal staff. Did I luck out! I found that at this restaurant. In addition to the atmosphere I was looking for, the food is very good. The centerpiece of breakfast for me is good tasty meats - not the packaged type you find at Denny's etc. Barney's gives you great portions with butcher-cut bacon, fist-sized sausage patties, and thick slabs of ham. I dare you to ask for pancakes. My 11 year old daughter has been hooked for years. The pancake is made to fit the dinner-sized plate it is in! The cooks even use batter to make a face or disney character to really make her giggle. Now this place is known for their dinners and barbecues, but it is my family's special hiding place for no-rush hearty breakfasts at least once a weekend. read more

Had dinner here with a date (her choice) and it turned out to be a wonderful place to eat. Had the tri tip with mashed potatoes and super kudos for having BOMB BBQ Sauce. The pie selection had me eager to order a pumpkin pie, which didn't turn out to be as good as it looked. However the excellent BBQ made up for it. Also great price on a pitcher of red house wine. We've been coming here for many years. After hearing that the original owners sold the business we were worried that it would change and just not be the same. We read a few reviews that were on the negative side. So we were sceptical. We ordered our usual, open faced pork sandwich. It was still as good as its always been. The sauce, the bbq pork, the hamburger bun, and house blue cheese did not change at all. The food was great! The service was great! Cant wait to go back. I just had food from Barney's for the very first time and it was decent. The brown sauce that other reviewers seem to love is kind of like watered down gravy. The service was great. Real world situation: If my brother came to visit from out of town and wanted to get BBQ or ribs for dinner I wouldn't take him to Barney's. Yes, Barney's is not your typical BBQ place, I think that's why some people knock it (because it's not what they expect of a BBQ joint). It probably hasn't changed much since it first opened in 1957, but to us middle-aged folks, that's a good thing. I love the cowboy pictures on the walls. I've been there a lot and yes, the brown sauce is different (tastes like there's molasses in it to me) and the red sauce is a tad vinegary for me, but you can't fault the quality of the ribs or the sliced meats, etc. I ding them a star because their breakfast omelettes are all filling and little egg. Service is usually great but prices are a little on the expensive side in my opinion. That said, I'd be sad if ever the day comes when Barney's Hickory Pit is not one of my local dining options. read more

We were looking for a new BBQ place and we tried this barneys hickory pot and we were extremely let down. The sauce they used is a thick smoky gravy on the ribs and its way too salty. The ribs have very little meat on them, everything we ordered was a let down. Don't waste your money . Oh there were flys landing all over our food. Service was great but that's about it read more

Went here because the BBQ place we wanted to go to was closed on Sunday. I ordered the Beef Open Sandwich and my girlfriend ordered the Pork Open Sandwich. The entire meal was really bland and uneventful. The sandwich is on plain sliced white bread you can pickup at the store and comes with normal fries. Oh, we were also promised pickels on the menu, but neither of us got one. The have brown (gravy based) and a red sauce (tomato based), and neither are anything special. This whole place was just plain, no flavor in either of the meats and the sauces add nothing to the meal. Service was good, can't complain there, just nothing special. Some of the best meats in town. I see all the reviews saying that the ribs are expensive but ribs are pretty expensive anywhere you go and this size of the ribs that you get from Barney's are considerably bigger and meatier than any ribs I've gotten anywhere else. I don't do many reviews, but this was so bad. We ordered the double ribs and the combo meat plate. Both came covered in what they called BBQ sauce, but it seemed more like meet drippings mixed with flour. It was so bad we had to leave without eating. My kid made a ketchup sandwich out of the Costco I hamburger bun they called a roll, rather than eat the meat. The pickle was ok. Oh, and although there is a Budweiser sign glowing in the window, they don't serve alcohol! read more

Barney's is not for delicate appetites. Been here twice in the past two weeks. Had the Open Beef Sandwich - asked for medium/well and that's what I got. I opted for the red (BBQ) sauce, made inhouse and excellent. The beef, and the whole meal, was perfect. On my second visit I had the BBQ Combination with the red sauce again - beef, chicken, turkey, ham and ribs. And this was after a huge bowl of Clam Chowder. It was enough for two. The meats were very tender and the fries, which were crispy and tasted great, were obviously cooked in clean oil. I will return here often from now on. The service is friendly and fast. The decor is old style - Barney's is over 50 years old. Highly recommended for a family night out. read more

We used to be pretty regular customers of Barney's for more than 30 years until about 5 years ago. Something is a miss here. They used to have the BEST salad ANYWHERE. Their food used to be pretty good. Something has happened. I think it's called cutting corners. The menu states that they compete in quality, not price. Their quality needs to catch up to the price. The salad was OK, the sliced beef was warm and just average, the sauce was just warm gravy and the fries were just OK. The servers were friendly, smiling and attentive. I want to make Barney's a regular place for dining, but for now, they will be the place I go to eat for a nostalgic reflection of the past. I understand why a lot of people go here on a regular basis. Except for cutting corners on the food, the place hasn't changed. read more

It was appalling. My bbq beef sandwich, my wifes pulled pork was just ok, my son's patty melt which he compared to his school lunch burger! I got their signature beef sandwich, meat was not cooked that day, was there Saturday afternoon. Meat was tough, dried out and had no flavor, no seasoning, actually appeared boiled then refridgerated, served dry on white bread(cheap white bread) drowned in bbq sauce I know this BECAUSE the meat was colder on the inside of the sandwich!!. Not a real bbq place, my family wanted to go here as we hadn't been since the 90's. Red bbq sauce tastes awesome, i asked if they made it there and it was a yes as in know a similar sauce Sysco makes for restuarants! The most appalling part was a $87 dollar bill for 4 dried up sandwiches and drinks! Then eating Tums til late in the evening. I can only guess the positive reviews are old regulars who haven't experienced better or ventured out "you can't see the forrest for the trees", they say. I've gotten better sandwiches off roach coaches Barney's: Go back to your roots and get it right again, you were once THEY place in Concord to go! If it stay's this way, Close your restaurant and bottle your sauce before you name becomes tarnished with your bad food. read more

Let me begin with 10 stars for the server, Tanille-she was terrific-friendly, attentive, efficient.. Salad-home made Blue Cheese dressing, open face pork sandwich and beans and the famous BBQ Ribs with fries. Everything was excellent. The establishment is a simple, clean and casual "hole in the wall" with no ambiance-just good food at an affordable price. Great family environment.
