Barney's is my childhood. Although it has new owners now, it is still the same as I remember. What's great about Barney's it that the ribs tastes great bare, no sauce needed. I've grown up on this food. The brown sauce is awesome ( somewhat like a spicy gravy but great on everything)!!!! The best thing I like getting is the closed face turkey on a french roll with the sauce on the side. The turkey is hickory smoked and you dip it in the sauce all for only $7...it's somewhat like a french dip but better. They do offer another sauce that is more of a barbeque taste if you prefer. Some other great items on the menu is their Jr. Ribs, Cheesburgers, and anything that is on the breakfast menu. Strange place. We were the only people in the place besides our waitress under the age of 70. Sat down and we all ordered beef plates, the waitress asked "With Sauce?", to which we offered a confused "Um, yeah?" -- her reply "You sure now? Nobody likes it." Well, she was right. Tough sliced beef, of TV Dinner quality topped with brown muck that tasted more of cigarette butts than of any Hickory I've ever encountered. Me and 3 other friends came here last night since we hadn't had anything to eat most of the day and didn't want to go to the hookah bar on an empty stomach. It was right across the way and since none of us had ever tried it, we decided that it'd be good for a change of pace. We went in and sat down; the place wasn't much on decor but that's really not important in a BBQ restaurant. Most of the menu items were à la carte and priced relatively high for the amount of what you received. And because of that, only one of my friends and I ordered a burger which was mediocre at best and they ended up costing us about $8 each and didn't come with a drink or fries. The servers weren't very attentive either for the amount of people that were in there which was near to none. So in the end, we ended up walking over to 1/4 Big Burger and got food there which was much more satisfying for a lower cost. I don't know how their BBQ is though, considering it was overpriced and that I can make it at home for cheaper. But one of the main things that annoyed me at Barney's is that they charged $2.25 for a side of BBQ sauce! That was just absurd! Never again will I come here. read more

I ordered the hot open face beef sandwich. This should have been called large pile of gravy tasting sauce with meat, bread and french fries instead, This so called bbq sauce was so bad I questioned if the cook put the wrong sauce on my food. I literally had everyone at the table try it before I said my opinion and every person said it was so disgusting that they would have rinsed all the sauce off the meat and got new bread. On top of that the carryout service was pretty bad. Too long of a story to get into, but one small thing was I asked the person on the phone what was the most popular item, or can I have her personal recomendation, Her response was, well everything tastes pretty good. Wow that is really terrible when you are supposed to be selling your product to a first time customer. The only reason they get 2 stars instead of one, was that other people at my table ordered fish and chips. This actually tasted pretty good. I work in the food industry. Sales. While the BBQ is good inow what else he's serving is garbage. His fries are what is called in he industry as line flow, which is the rejects. His fries are horrible. His homemade salad dressings are Hidden Valley Ranch dry mix. Iceberg lettuce? Have you priced that lately at the market? With canned beets? I sell those also. Baked beans? My fiancee and I ate at Barney's tonight for the first time and it was great. She had a french dip, which was delicious and I had their open face beef dinner, which was sliced beef on top of white bread with french fries and their original brown gravy sauce on the side, which went well with the beef and the fries. It was a simple but delicious and filling meal. Both of us were very happy with our meals and we were both interested in coming back for more. It's worth noting that we did both ask that our meat be sliced thinly. The waitress was fast with drink refills and the food came out pretty quickly, though we did beat the dinner rush and it was definitely starting to get packed while we were leaving, and on a Thursday night too! We felt like time warped back to the old "Hickory Pit" restaurants that dotted the bay! Turns out the original owner was an employee of Rod's Hickory Pit which was a Vallejo 24 hour favorite! It was like Katz's deli minus pastrami and the crazy crowds! Glad we found this joint and Da Boyz (all teens) LOVED IT! They said they would come back. They got closed sandwiches and me and the wife ordered a combo meal but switched the ham for another rib! The ribs were good sized so I get my usual potato salad and a loaded baked potato for the wife! Glad we got the sauces on the side. The fam favored the red sauce the brown was also good too. We love Barney's!! I live in Carson City and we travel sometimes the four hours just to eat here. It has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember. The decor is definitely outdated but who cares! The food is great! We love their salad and house salad dressing (like a blue cheese ranch mixture). I love the french dip medium to medium rare. It must be their expectation of something else. The regulars (there are many) probably don't Yelp. Ask for the sauce (we call the "gravy" the sauce) on the side if unsure. Because I think it is. The decor is old style booth with a few Western paintings on the walls. But people don't come here to look at paintings. They come here to eat messy dripping down your face delicious barbecued meat. The brown gravy they use is some of the best tasting stuff on Earth. You could dip tree bark in it & it would taste good. WE love this place been coming here since it open (second day). This time our order was over $50 , had a rack of ribs with the sauce on the side and beef dinner and fries. Had half the ribs left to take home and very little sauce left , Asked for more to put on the to go box and was told there is a charge for this of $1.50 ,it's not the $1.50 but how you treat the people that keep you in business, The server was rude about this, this is not how the grand child of the owner should be ! We will be back , but not for a long time, we go about once a month with a round trip of about 40 miles, maybe once a year. I love love love it....We have since moved to Santa Cruz California and every time We come up to Walnut Creek we call sheila and order 2 double orders of center cut ribs, extra brown sauce and two pints of their house salad dressing which by the way is the best.....Sheila has taken over from her parents and is doing a great job. My kids grew up with her. We love Barney's, we love that it hasn't changed, we love that the food is yummy delish......I have lots of brown sauce in my freezer for when I get the craving and can't make it up to Concord!
