This was my first time. I'd driven by Barney's for over thirty years, but the other night I gave in to my craving for some good old fashioned barbecued ribs and decided to order the regular ribs for takeout. A place that's been around for 56 years has got to be good, right? Wrong!! The ribs were terrible--as in astonishingly bad--truly the worst I've ever had! When I order ribs from a rib joint, I expect them to have been slow cooked and tender to the point of falling off the bone, but these were tough, and the "barbecue" sauce was appalling! I later found out that they offer both a brown sauce and a more traditional red sauce, but I was not told this on the phone when ordering. The brown sauce is sickening and bland and detracts from flavor of the meat itself, making an already disappointing meal even worse. On the plus side, the french fries and pickle--which I wasn't even expecting--were very good, the service was quick, and the young lady who served me gave me a nice smile. I don't like to judge a restaurant after only one visit, so I might try the steak if I ever go back again, but it surely won't be anytime soon. read more

Excellent food - I like the combo platters with chicken and ribs, especially with the red sauce ! Gracious staff, short wait times on the service. Been going here for 10-11 years, without a second thought. My wife enjoys the Friday night deal of Prime Rib. Kids are welcome here, and will certainly get their fill of food. read more

This isn't barbecue. This is meat smothered in a weird brown gravy that doesn't taste at all like barbecue sauce. Nice people, and the sides were yummy...but it was pricey and definitely NOT what most people would consider barbecue. The search continues. read more

I love old joints. This place has been around since the 50's (as the window says). We were in the area and hungry and glad we found this spot! I had the Ribs and Chicken Combination and she had the Sirloin & Eggs. The portions were generous and the prices aren't cheap, but fair. I know they don' t cheat and boil their ribs, and the flavor was savory. I opted to have both the brown and red sauces in a seperate dishes instead of over my ribs. I wasn't too thrilled with the brown sauce as if just reminded my of regular brown gravy, but the red sauce was tasty and tangy with a nice bite of spice in it. The highlight though was my lady's Sirloin WOW...if was JUICY, tasty and TENDER! We'll be coming here for that Sirloin again if we're back in those neck of the woods! read more

I'm from Southern California, and we don't have barbecue snobbery there, so I come to barbecue without a lot of baggage about how it ought to be, how it shouldn't be, and what it must not be. I had the pork ribs in red sauce, and they were quite smoky, and not really delicious, but oddly addictive in their flavor. As in, I found myself returning to the fridge and pecking at the leftovers after dinner had long been over. Once they were gone, I though, "Meh, nothing special", but I have found myself craving it lately. I guess Barney's is a mellow sitter, a stealth flavor of sorts. A friend recommended Barney's since we were in the area and my favorite Emil Villas was out of the way, so we went in for a slab of ribs and since online provides limited menu options I was happy to learn apon arrival that they had a zesty red sauce although it was too heavy in either mustard and Worcestershire sauce or A-1. If you dislike sweetness in you sauce then this is for you otherwise you should consider the gravy sauce which I wish I did although not for the sweetness aspect of it but simply hoping for something better. Every time I have BBQ outside of my home state Texas I am disappointed, and this was no exception. I don't even know why I try anymore, but tonight I decided to give it a shot. My son and I went in and the no frills diner style retaurant already did nothing for me in the way of "ambiance" although I am not always that interested in ambiance if the food is good. I was in the mood for ribs, but I also always love good BBQ chicken so I got the ribs and chicken combo. While the meat was actually barbequed (unlike other places I've experienced which simply broil the meat with BBQ sauce and try to pass that off) it just wasn't very flavorful. I don't mind a good dry rub, although I'm more of a wet girl, but there just didn't even seem to be any spices or flavoring at all. The chicken was super dry and the ribs were just filled with bone and fat to the point that it was impossible to naw on them the way I normally would. The coleslaw was good and sweet, which is the way I like it, but the sauce, both the red and brown, were both lacking. The brown sauce looked like it had great potential, but when I tasted it I was sad to find it had no taste whatsoever. Listen, just add a touch of molasses, or some honey and you've got something. Maybe even a little chili powder...something! Unfortunately, it's just this bland thin sauce that does nothing for the meat. The red sauce is okay, although really tart with no sweetness at all. It at least had some pepper in it, so it wasn't nearly as bad as the brown sauce. Overall, I was disappointed, to say the least, and my search for good BBQ continues. One last note about desert. In all of my years I have never experienced a BBQ place that does not have some traditional southern desert, like peach cobbler (my favorite!) or banana pudding. This place only had frozen chocolate pie. This isn't even homemade pie, just boxed pie in the freezer! $2.50 for a slice of pre-fab frozen pie? People....what are you thinking??!! read more

This is probably one of my favourite steakhouse the food here us good just the way i like it and the waitress was very nice and helpfull.

Worst BBQ place ever. My first and last time coming here food was horrible the only thing good was the pea soup but the salad was old and dry I had to add a lot of dressing to cover the nasty dry salad I mean come on salad should always be fresh. One of my favorite foods......the ribs drenched in the barney's "gravy". I actually get a craving for it! Been eating Barney's ribs since I was a kid and I'm 48 now. The restaurant is in an older strip mall shopping area and its interior is an old diner look because its probably the original interior. This is one of its many charms though! You don't get embarassed tucking your napkin in your shirt & licking your fingers when you're done. We even use one of their perfectly crispy french fries to squeegee every last bit of tasty gravy off the plate. The servers are super sweet & attentive. read more

1st) Think there is a misconception on the subject of BBQ. Beef broth based gravy is *NOT* BBQ sauce, its GRAVY. Had the combo plate. None of teh meat showed a smoke ring in the meat. The rib was okay, but tasted par boiled and the lightly smoked. The rest of it - Smoke??? Not that I could tell. All of it was chewy - it clearly wasn't wasn't low and slow like BBQ is supposed to be done as none of the connective tissues/gelatin had gotten broken down at all. Thank fully I ordered the gravy (aka "sauce") on the side, the wife had ordered the open face pork san with gravy on. She couldn't eat it. Best part of the meal? The did my daughters fried egg sandwich okay, and teh fries were pretty good - I like gravy and fries. Other than those two items, it was a total write off meal. I ate most of the meat as I was starving, and it was edible, but far more just bad grill than BBQ. First time in and last time. Not sure how it stays in business. read more

I love the pork ribs. There the very best ! I was a chef. at a country club and I wish I had this set up to cook ribs somewhere. Stk.fries are the best too. The service could be better with a smile. But I feel they need way more servers and only one person that handles the phone with the payment of food. Money is dirty and should be handled by one person off a ck. tray. Four stars for what this place is--a comforting, hole-in-the-wall local spot. The decor hasn't changed in like 40 years, it is outdated and a bit sticky, to tell the truth. The pork sandwich is good, and everything else is fine--burgers, breakfast, grilled cheese, etc. Very yummy onion rings. This is not a place I would impress out of town guests or first dates with. But, it is definitely a place where my husband and I often take the kids to eat. The help is friendly, you seat yourself when walking in, and it is low-key. Its a neighborhood restaurant. read more

Was getting lotto tickets across the street, it smelled like awesome bbq in the air looked up and saw this place. Went in ordered a beef brisket sandwich to go, menu said 8.99 was 16.75 (guess it doubles for dinner plate) no drink but I didn't care because it smell something great outside, hurried home but that smell I was smelling wasn't coming out the bag, you know like woodys bbq in la you can smell it coming out the bag so bad make you wanna crash your car. Been coming to Barneys since I was a kid. My parents loved it, I loved it, my kids have been eating there since they were old enough to hold a rib. Went there a week ago even after hearing my concord FB friends say it was different. Order salad bleu cheese good, order our ribs had to explain 3 times that we both wanted brown sauce on ribs and the side. Fries were the same goodness, ribs were meaty husband had sauce only on side. But the sauce. Come on Barneys you had to be taught by old owners how to do it. I told my husband this is spicy not like how I remember it. Hes like really? Woman across from me says is this the regular brown sauce its spicier then I remember. I look at my husband and said see. Took leftovers to kids. Both daughters and son who used to love it say its spicy. It had a taste of like chili or Tabasco that was not there before. Who ever is messing with success is not being smart. read more

The locals that are used to this slop as food don't know the difference in good BBQ and a worn out menu. We stopped for a quick lunch today, the Husband got the Hot Beef and I got Hot Pork. They were promptly served along with red & brown sauce. As sides he ordered the potato salad while I ordered cole slaw. The sides are large enough that you can share them. We liked both meat choices, we shared plates, which we always do. We plan to order for dinner soon so the kids can try it out too. The service was good very helpful waitress, the restaurant was quiet and clean. read more

I'll be honest, all barbecue with the exception of the spicy North Carolina-inspired deliciousness of Blue Ribbon in Arlington, Mass is suspect, and that includes everything south of the Mason-Dixon line (consider yourself messed with, Texas). With this caveat in mind, Barney's is actually decent. The spare ribs are tasty and very filling; the sliced pork is perfectly acceptable. The brown sauce is bland, but the red is pretty good. And, yes, the meat is actually and truly barbecued. The decor may not be the nicest, but it's pretty clear to me that they did a fairly extensive remodel during the mid 70's. The cracked vinyl booths and faded western paintings add a certain degree of authenticity. Barney's camouflage hats are available for a nominal fee. I consider this a fairly safe bet for locals looking for a decent meal. read more

My cousin and I have driven here from the Peninsula for years so we can get some of those great ribs draped over fries and bread. The older I get the tougher it is to finish the whole mound but it travels well. Soooo good! I've been coming here since I was knee high to a grasshopper and the food hasn't changed. Hot open faced sandwiches and pork ribs are killer! They have added a new BBQ sauce (the old one, or darker one, was bland for some peoples taste, not mine) and when the two sauces are combined... Magical! This little place has been here as long as I can remember, and the food has remained consistently good throughout the years. Whether you are ordering a simple club sandwich or a BBQ platter, you can expect a good, filling meal. My only complaint is the lack of sides...all they offer is french fries and cole slaw. The fries are good, but some variety would be a nice addition. Nevertheless, I will continue making the trip across town to Barney's. read more

This place is so good!! The food is amazing!! I can't get enough of the brown sauce! It smothers the fries, the smoked meats and ribs and the hamburger buns....yummmmm! The portions match the pricing, you get a ton of food for a decent price. I've been going here since I was a kid, and as an adult I love it even more. You've gotta check em out. I frequented Barney's at least twice annually in the '90's when down in Concord visiting my grandparents, and over this past summer made a pilgrimage back to see if it was as good as I remembered (my most recent meal there before this had been in 2001). The place is exactly how I remembered it, and just as delicious. The regular sized ribs with a side of fries, a toasted bun, and a pickle were slathered in the brown sauce and left me stuffed. The ribs were tender and very meaty. I personally enjoy the brown sauce, more of a gravy than a traditional BBQ sauce, but my dining partner was grateful the server asked if we had ever had it before, and offered an alternative tangy red sauce. The only flaw was fact our hotel room in the city didn't have a refrigerator, so we couldn't take an order to go for later. Probably for the best, since all the other BART riders would have been jealous of the smells wafting their way. Highly recommend Barney's Hickory Pit. read more
