Dear Concord, It's was a lovely Saturday full of hope and life. While heading to get cream puffs, the girl and I saw Barney's and thought to try it out. The weekend review offered deals, so we decided to give it a go. Walking in the place was empty, my soul stirred, and I wondered if I had made a mistake. Without hesitation, we were told to sit anywhere by a lovely hostess. I was still just a boy and stunned by the 1960 decor; I thought to myself maybe the food could be good. I took in the air, but there was no smell of smokey bbq or fresh grilled meats. It distinctly smelled like the warm fart of an elderly man, probably a Bill or Tod. We were given menus with perplexing options like open or closed sandwiches. My girl began to sweat. We drank coffee and water, when we finally settled, the open turkey sandwich and pork ribs were ordered. She received what could only be described as cold death meat on cheap liquor store sliced white bread. Not toasted, not buttered, no condiments, just the tired wasting away of a chef who no longer enjoyed living. I was plated the dried flesh of an ancient and deccicated pig. It was my first encounter with pork jerky ribs. I didn't order shoe leather bbq meat on the bones of some unfortunate sacrificed creature, but I cannot shake the feeling I saw the Nike swoosh obscured by the rotten brown of terrible sauce. I couldn't eat it. My girl swirled her plate with her fork in hopes of making it look eaten, so she wouldn't have to explain to the kind waitress why she didn't consume the odd smelling failed deli meat sandwich. I couldn't eat the fries on my plate. The taste of Castro motor oil will forever remain on my tongue. We are sad people now. Even enjoying our cream puffs from the original place we intended to visit doesn't quite rid our dimmed souls of the emotional damage suffered at Barney's Hickory Pit. May God have mercy on our souls. read more

Don't listen to these pretentious yuppies. If it wasn't for the delightful smokey flavor of Barney's hickory pit in 1978 when my parents went on their first date, I wouldn't be here. It's kept its stellar flavor, wallpaper and immaculate service since 1957. I ate here, my papi at here, and my grand papi ate here. Hell I'm pretty sure Mr Barnes was at my baptism. Not a fan! Not bbq in most sense of the word. Ribs were fatty and tough. Order was to go and they shoved the rolls (hamburger bun with a bit of butter) and pickle right on top and put a lid on. Everything was soggy and tasted a bit like pickles. Pickles and GRAVY that is. If you haven't been here before, beware. The sauce is gravy, not bbq sauce and imo quite bland. We ordered a side dish of fish and chips for the kids and it was literally 4 glorified fish sticks that looked like they came out of a Gordon's fisherman box!! Obviously from frozen and not made in house at all!! Not like the previous picture seen here. Walk in here and it'll feel like you're in Nevada off highway 80, somewhere near winnemucca or Elko where the conversations polite, the beers cold, and the foods hot. First time here doing the Concord Comfort food week thing. The staff is very friendly and the environment is very chill. Food was good. I got the Open face Hot Turkey sandwich and my son got the Kid's Cheese Burger. We got house gravy and BBQ sauce on the side. The gravy was very good. Kid was dipping his fries and burger in it. For those of you who know me and have read (or skimmed) my reviews in these six years, you should know how I feel about "BBQ". I'm usually have more to critique when it comes to most "Barbeque" establishments. With "Chinese Cuisine" being at #2 on my top 3 favorite foods, of course you should of guessed by now what's "Numero Uno". Having been born down south, (The real down south, not So Cal) Arkansas to be exact, and living between there and Texas before my move to the Wast Coast. I have had my fair share of some real "BBQ" from trips to Memphis, Oklahoma, Missouri, and now living in California, the "Nugget Rib Cook-Off" is only a short trip to Reno away. So far in my journey for good "Barbecue", ribs mostly, in California has been a up and down experience. Let me say that "Barney's Hickory Pit" has given me some hope, especially in a kinda dire time. Let me tell you what I like about this establishment and why they have left a good impression. "Barney's Hickory Pit" City - Concord Food - Six Piece Rib and Fries Price - $20.12 Barney's Hickory Pit: I have driven by this place a number of times on my many trips to Concord. I have always wanted to try them but always had other plans so to speak. I knew from reading what the "Yelpire" have had to say about this establishment that it's more then just a "BBQ" joint, in fact from what I take from it, it's more of a diner like establishment. The menu here seems like comfort food is their aim and I would say that they do it pretty well from what I got. It kinda sucks that the current "Cerveza Virus" took away from experiencing a real sit down experience at this establishment, but....I didn't let that spoil my mood. Simply put, I didn't come and visit a place with "Hickory Pit" in their name to come and get a smoked meat sandwich, I wanted some "Ribs" and from the reviews they are pretty good. Let me tell you what I thought about them.. The six piece ribs (Regular on the menu) were $18.50. These were spareribs and they were meaty and had a nice smokey flavor to them. I know people and establishments have many ways of preparing their foods, but I sense here there is a oven/grilling method they use as I still didn't get a grill char taste from these ribs, but they did have a really nice flavor even without the two sauces they provided. I'm usually when it comes to eating ribs a dry rub kinda guy. I don't eat sauce on my ribs much but I heard they had some good house made sauces (Red and Brown) that I was looking forward to trying. The Red Sauce they have was tangy and lightly sweet, more like a sauce you would get from Texas. It was ok, as a rib topper I would pass, but in a pulled pork or beef sandwich I think this would be the perfect compliment. The Brown Sauce was pretty good and different. I still wouldn't use it as a rib topper, but a nice on the side dipper. I did prefer this one more to the red sauce. I got a small order of fries $3.00 and I was slightly disappointed that they didn't get served on their own. Being in the same container with the ribs made them soggy from the steam and I didn't really eat the fries. But I did try a few with the sauces, But I didn't eat them all. They give you a slice of pickle and a toasted bun both of which are nice touches. I don't think I've ever had a pickle with my "Barbeque" but I ate it. Overall I say I was pretty happy for the most part with what I got, plus the bonus extra 2 ribs they put in my container was pretty nice of them. In Closing: I think "Barney's Hickory Pit" is serving up simple not over the top food as judging from their menu. The ribs are their own identity instead of trying to mimic other styles of "BBQ". I definitely will ask for my fries to be served in it's own container next time, but I also have plans to try other sides in the future. If you haven't figured it out by now, "Yes" I will be visiting this establishment again and although it's not the "Barbeque" that some may expect, it's the "BBQ" that still will satisfy you....how many times did I say "BBQ" in this review......lol. 2 years ago we tried the "New Barney's" after the new staff took it over. The brown sauce that Barney's was famous for no longer tasted like it did at the "original Barney's". It tasted like somebody added instant mashed potato mix to it! But... .... Maybe - after reading so many of the positive comments- we might give it another go. Maybe. I hope they got from Barney himself or Rod, or their children the original recipe - to restore the brown sauce to its original deliciousness - not like instant mashed potatoes! read more

I am not one to forget the past 2 visits as they were not very good but I have to admit something has changed at our local bbq spot.. I ordered a full rack and fries and received a half Ryan's some red sauce on the side with my fries. As I left I said I'll leave it in the review. Well here is my review the ribs were perfect the fries were cooked to perfection the red sauce was as I remember it from years past.. something has changed in our little spot in concord they have found there groove they have figured out the smoker.. They can't get their hours straight!! Drove 30mins to get there and the rude as hell waitress tells us they closing in 15mins and order can only be TO GO. I tell her they should probably update hours on social media to let people know the change and she wants to argue that it's posted correctly. Even YELP has them closing at 8pm but according to rude waitress - they close at 7:30pm. I've been a customer for over 40 years and love their food. My family has been coming here for over 40 years. Usually we get ribs to go, sometimes a French Dip, last month I tried the Turkey Burger. There was a bit of a dip during the ownership change, but the new owner is making a huge and successful effort to maintain the old menu while trying new things. Last night's ribs were outstanding: very meaty, super tender, and when I asked for my fries extra crispy, they were perfectly cooked. They have a keto menu, how great is that! And last month's Turkey Burger? Absolutely wonderful; I wish they'd bring it back. So if you weren't happy the first or second time you went, try it again. It's SO nice to have a small family-owned rib joint instead of a corporate chain bony rib franchise with super sweet high fructose sauce. Dickeys it's not; thank goodness! Barney's Hickory Pit has been Here in Concord since 1957! I first started going in 1967! Although under new ownership the place is still here and the ribs are just as delicious now as they were back then! I went today for lunch! It has changed a little over the years, but the ribs remain the same! Mmm Mmm good! Finger licking good if I might say. I had the pork spareribs with their delicious brown gravy and French fries and a nice pickle slice! The smoked ribs are so moist and tender and smoky goodness! The brown gravy goes so good with the ribs and the French fries! My service was good, she brought me ketchup but I didn't use it because the brown gravy sauce was so dang good! O'Ya! I drove over to PH for a fish and chips place that was closed. Pulled up trusty Yelp and saw Barney's listed. What I saw reminded me of Rod's Hickory Pit in El Cerrito and San Pablo back in the day. I tried Barney's yesterday while visiting the area, feeling like having a beef sandwich. It's an older neighborhood and shopping center, but for me it's all about the food. The waitress was pleasant and welcoming. I ordered the beef sandwich with barbecue sauce. I was delighted to be asked how I wanted my beef cooked. Usually with beef sandwiches and/or French dips at most places, it just comes cooked well. I ordered it rare and it came to my table just as I like it. Very tender beef and both sauces available. Their original brown gravy and a tomato based barbecue sauce. I chose the latter and took the brown gravy home to use with my ground beef. Unfortunately the fryer had broken down so I couldn't get fries on this visit. Next time I hope to try their fries, because I will be back when in the area. If you don't need fancy and want to enjoy a good beef meal, give Barney's a try. read more
