It's been a minute since we've been to Barnsboro Inn and I have to say they've really stepped it up. We went with friends for dinner last Friday night. The service was impeccable and the food was served hot and quick but not too quick that we felt rushed. I decided to give them a try for Super Bowl Sunday and ordered wings. Their wings are a little pricey but they are enormous and very well cooked. The ordering and pick up of the wings was flawless and the people could not have been nicer. Wonderful night at Barnsboro Inn on New Year's Eve. We went there as the restaurant we had reservations for was backed up over an hour. They had a small but good NYE menu and we had options for our meal. The food was delicious and service was good considering there were many demands on our server. The pre-dinner martinis were good in old fashioned martini cups. No bread accompanying the salad course...booooo. We had choices of salads or soup, both of which were good. Dinner was a choice of four entrees...filet mignon, sea bass, pasta vodka and fried chicken. There was also an antipasto course of risotto which I had as my entree. All were delicious. We didn't have dessert, but they looked yummy. We had a chance to meet the chef, and he was lovely and experienced at Wolfgang Puck's restaurant. His training was evident in the food. So good! The Barnsboro Inn has been doing just that--more like a quarter of a millennium in restaurant years--and it wears that history well. Most of the place feels original, and that's a compliment. I got there at 3:50 on a Monday. Doors opened at 4. I was the first customer through the door. By 4:38, the place was packed--shoulder to shoulder, people standing, the room buzzing. That kind of turnout doesn't happen by accident. Food-wise, I went with the roadhouse wings. They're half wings, which I don't usually love, but these were solid--meaty, well-cooked, and full of flavor. No gimmicks, just done right. That theme seems to run through the whole place. I hadn't been to the Barnsboro Inn in so long but I really wanted to go since Chef Ted Miller closed up his Blair Mountain Biscuit shop. It's tavern fare, and it was all good and okay. It was just a lot more expensive than I thought it would be for food that I have gotten other places for a lot less. I take into account that my lovely lady had 2 martinis, and I had two beers. We shared the Wedge salad, and I got a burger and charged for onion rings, which were fantastic. And she had the filet tips and got truffle fries. We got a slice of cake to go. It was about $145. There was no complaint on the food, but like I said, it was a bit pricey. I still miss Ted's BMB shop though. read more

let me tell you how 2 out of 3 soups ordered at my table had literal plastic shards in them. we cancelled our order because we obviously did not like the odds of the rest of our food not having plastic shards in it. our waitress Sara came back to say we would not be charged for the food but would be charged for our beverages that most of us didn't even take a sip of. needless to say we won't be back read more

For starters sitting outside I ordered a Makers Mark Manhattan and stupidly I asked "Betsy" our waitress after I was already sipping on it "just because in the past I've ordered the same drink at other establishments and the most I paid was $18.00 @ Giumurellos "G-bar" how much is this Manhattan? " She came back to me and said $23, she said they have a new computer system. I said I never would have paid that and she said " when I was told by the bartender how much it was, Betsy our waitress apologized and said I should have told you first". I said I never paid this much for any drink and never would. I never paid for a Manhattan in Manhattan at this obscene price. We go to Terranova in Washington Township and the same Manhattan is less than $11.00 ($10.30) and a 1st Class restaurant and food ! I said I need a refund which was denied. My Manhattan tasted more of ice water than bourbon. When they asked what bourbon I wanted (as there was no cocktail menu offered) I noticed Angels Envy. I happen to know its a $52.00 bottle. The place is small. The bar was very welcoming and seemed like a good place to have a few drinks. Our waitress was AWESOME!!! I ordered the grilled tuna sandwich with the side salad and I absolutely loved it. When I come back and order it again (which I will) I will ask them for extra wasabi dressing. My sandwich was truly scrumptious. My son got the pulled pork with fries and he loved his meal as well. First, let me say that we're so glad they have new owners! Although we've been there several times, tonight was disappointing. Ordered chips and salsa to start - the chips were bottom of the bag broken and stale. Sent them back and ordered Santa Fe chicken and bean egg rolls. Unfortunately, they contained zero chicken and two black beans! My wife ordered the char grilled chicken sandwich, which had a piece of chicken that was NOT char grilled and was about 1/8 in size. Needless to say, the roll dwarfed the sandwich. I ordered the French onion soup which was so so. Very disappointed as this is a great outdoor spot, featuring live music. Just all around a terrible experience. We made reservations for 5 people. They opened leaves on a four person table so 2 of us were crowded into the aisle where we had patrons and wait staff constantly banging into us. The waiter was not attentive, he was literally standing 5 feet away ignoring us; unlike the busboy who hovered and constantly wanted to remove dishes when we were trying to eat. They gave us a list of specials, which we tried to order from, only to be told they were all out. The waiter and hostess both failed to mention that when we were seated. Again this was 5pm and they were out of 2 of the specials. The food was bad, raw French fries, asked for barbecue sauce on the side which came slathered all over. I wanted to like this place. It's local and been around for a long time. The burgers are typical frozen patties. The roll was a little dry so you need ketchup to eat the burger. My wife's filet was good. But they forgot her salad and refused to take anything off the bill. The coffee after dinner was bad. The waitress was a little slow but friendly. However we paid cash and she made sure to give us large bills in a not so obvious effort to get a bigger tip. We got change and gave her 20% but it left a bad feeling. Just had a Turkey Reuben tonight for $16. The sandwich was served on miniature marble rye. Looked like the first couple slices of a loaf that went from small on the end to regular size in the middle. It was really tasty but disgracefully small. I'm not sure of the mindfulness of the staff that would allow something that small to come out of the kitchen. I was in the restaurant business and would not ever serve something like that in good conscience and at that price point. If I had wanted a tea sandwich I would have ordered one. This review is based on value for the price. The owner may not be aware of this but needs to know and hopefully does now. The owner needs to rethink or educate those working in the kitchen. This not going to be taken well by your guests and really does not bode well for business. A real turn off. It's a really easy fix but you need to get your consistency/quality control act together. read more

Service was quick, friendly and spot on. Our apps and entrées were absolutely mouth watering! Here's the rundown: As for apps, we ordered the Cajun Calamari (lightly breaded fried calamari and hot pepper rings sprinkled with Cajun spice blend and chopped tomatoes, with a side of chipotle mayo) and Mozzarella Sticks (Five fried mozzarella sticks served with marinara sauce). Both were delish and devoured quickly! On to the entrees! We ordered a couple of Bourben Fired NY Strips (Char grilled 10 Oz, Kentucky bourbon flamed Strip Steak topped with roasted portobello mushrooms and caramelized onions, served with side of Inn made steak sauce), one Steak and Crab Diane (Twin three ounce petite tenderloin medallions topped with Super lump crab and drizzled with Diane sauce) and a Filet Mignon (Char grilled 8 Oz Filet topped with mushroom cap, side of beef au 'jus). Don't even ask me what we ordered and all shared for dessert...all I know is that is was some dang tasty banana and chocolate concoction that disappeared in seconds! We've been here a handful of times in person. We have loved the entree preparation, high-quality ingredients, kind servers, and slowed down pace of dining - classic drinks, bread, salads, apps, entrees, dessert...no rush on a thing. Some people hate this, but I never minded. We always had a good time, felt at home in the ambiance of the old fashioned building, and the flickering candles. We saw our neighbors here with good friends once, and it solidified our belief that it is and has been a good spot for a while. We have now gotten takeout from Barnsboro Inn twice during lockdown, and have appreciated the attention to detail in our order, the speediness of preparation, and the kindness of folks when we're picking up. I got salmon and zucchini last, and it was a taste of summer that I had been missing so much. We also did more casual fare, back in May, and enjoyed burgers and Ruebens and fries. Would recommend - now and before and (hopefully) for years to come. They're doing an outdoor bar scene right now that we haven't tried yet, but it looked fun :-) We hope to be back soon. read more

My husband is still talking about his French onion sandwich weeks after we grabbed a bite to eat at the Barnsboro Inn. We're coming back soon and definitely ordering the cajun calamari, which was some of the best calamari we've ever tried. We order it quite often as an appetizer since its something all of us in the family actually like. Calamari is almost always a hit or miss (too mushy or not enough flavor). This time we practically licked the plate clean. My daughter's portion of cheese ravioli was quite filling which was perfect for it's $4.95 price point. My crab cake sandwich was mostly all crab and little to no "fillers". I would definitely get it again, but I wish it came with more than a side of slaw OR chips. The restaurant is semi-upscale or at least definitely tries to be so it would be great if there was an option for a veggie side or fries with your sandwich. The prices for sandwiches and appetizers seem to be on point and we were definitely satisfied with the quality of food. After a quick glance at their entrees (both regular and classic) prices we went straight back to the sandwich section of the menu. I was considering the salmon meal, however our server did not know if the salmon was wild caught or farm raised and she did not seem to want to go check for me. We went on a Friday night around 5:30 and they were able to squeeze us into a small table by the door, which was fine because we were way too hungry to wait. Lucky for us we came at the perfect time because within a few minutes the small waiting area was packed full of hungry folks. I'm not sure how long the wait was but by the time we left at around 7pm, there was no longer a wait. There seems to be lulls in the crowds so hopefully next time we get lucky again! read more

I have never been in an establishment that actually had the audacity or the gaul to add a $1.00 per drink charge for ICE! YES ICE!! My friend and I were drinking Dewars and JW Red on the rocks. So, we thought we'd give the Barnsboro another try. Friends invited us there last night for an outdoor Covid dinner. still disappointed. I ordered a caesar salad with Salmon. the piece of salmon that came with it was little more than the size of a crouton. when I asked about it, I was told "it's the standard 4 ounce piece". Well, I don't carry a scale with me so i couldn't argue, but look at the pic. The food is absolutely awesome when it comes to bar food. It's a step above. From what I understand, this restaurant has made some changes in recent years. I was made uncomfortable by the bartender in 3 or 4 visits and likely will not return, at least not to the bar area. I am always polite and I tried to give this woman the benefit of the doubt in terms of having an unusual sense of humor, but I've also heard her make rude comments to employees and she is constantly complaining about what other customers have done in the past. In general, her remarks are questionable at best. She seems to be on high alert for any possible miscue a customer could have when ordering or making a request, no matter how minor, and reacts as though she's 'calling you out on it'. When she was pleasant, I came to believe it's just to get a tip. It comes across as though she is trying to make the bar area suit her personal tastes as far as clientele, all the while this restaurant has made changes to attract new customers. Rather than simply providing good service, the vibe is "you're on MY turf". I also noticed another recent reviewer stated that she reserves seats for her friends. This is our go-to for a burger. I've been here a dozen times over the last few years and this was the first time I checked in and therefore saw the rating. I was a little surprised. Expectations are everything. It's a the oldest bar in NJ, the outdoor area is nice when weather appropriate and I've always felt like I had at least a B+ experience. Plenty of options for seating and food for the kids also. I also have enjoyed their ribs several times. Given the area doesn't have many options, the Barnsboro is always a solid choice. read more
