Barone's in Valley Glen, San Fernando Valley, California

I wish I could give this place ten stars. New Yorkers have an understanding among ourselves that it's very rare to find decent pizza west of the Mississippi. Barone's is one of those rare cases. At Barone's, you feel like you're back in the old neighborhood somewhere in Brooklyn or Queens fifty years ago. There's a reason this restaurant is used in movies... it's because the atmosphere is unmistakably old school, traditional Italian. Not the kind of Italian they got on the other side in Italy. I'm talking about the kind of Italian restaurant we grew up with on the East Coast. Cozy, family oriented, with delicious food. And I haven't even gotten to the staff. The folks who work here care about the food they serve, they care about the customer experience and they remember you. They're absolutely wonderful. Don't ever change. I absolutely love this place and eat here every time I'm out this way. Take it from someone who knows. This place is a rare gem and the real deal. It's amazing every time because they nailed the whole thing (recipes, ambience, and service) and they're not looking to change it up every few years.

We only eat here because my friend's family always ate here. Do a pick up order - just get a bunch of pizzas and salads. That is the best way to enjoy the nostalgia and the food. The corner pieces are my favorite - thin crust. Pretty good. On the other hand, I actually was at the restaurant, and the other food is disappointing. (Why is the artichoke appetizer made in chicken stock??) I'm sad I didn't get a personal pizza for lunch. I guess they don't really cook at lunch time. The kitchen looked quiet and empty. Maybe they just reheat. The eggplant sandwich was gluey and tasteless. The pasta on the side was definitely not fresh. Good News: I was with my aunts (in their 80s). They had an easy time parking at 11:30am and getting in and out of the lobby and dining room - even with a walker. However, I'm not sure if the bathroom doors and stalls are wide enough for someone using a walker.

Came here the other day and had a delicious Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo and Pepperoni Pizza. Garlic Bread and Sourdough Bread was delicious. Great customer service from the staff. The server was awesome. They have big booths and a nice bar you can sit at. Coke fountain drinks. This place has been around since 1945. Parking can be kind of tight during busy hours. Nice spot to grab a bit if you are in the Valley Glen area or Van Nuys or North Hollywood. I definitely recommend.

Sorry Steve Carell, I tried Barone's because you recommended their pizza. You were sort of right about the pizza. It was good but not great. We got the pepperoni with mushroom on half. I'd give it an 8/10. Sadly everything else fell flat. Barone's Italian Salad was bland. The famous stuffed mushrooms were also pretty average. The meatball sub was basically two meatballs on a half a sub. Again average and bland. Service was pretty good and if you like nostalgic Italian style ambiance this place looks cool. We decided if we come back we will probably just get the pizza. $132 for two plus $8 for parking.

After watching a matinee feature of Nosferatu at Regal North Hollywood Theater, my relatives suggested having Italian-American pizza and beer for lunch. We eagerly agreed and knew he meant we were going to nearby Barone's Pizzeria on Oxnard Street, where we've eaten several times since the late 2000s. Upon arrival, we scored an open parking stall near the entrance of the pizzeria/restaurant. From the building's Swiss Chalet-like exterior, you'd not expect to find Italian-American cuisine here. The interior gives off a retro 1940s vibe. Upon closer exploration, our cheery male server explained that the building used to be the former Old Heidelberg Restaurant and Matterhorn Chef (Swiss) restaurant. Also, he said that a scene from the 1982 movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High was filmed in their main dining room. Another fun fact we learned about Barone's Pizzeria is that they were the first restaurant in Los Angeles and Southern California to sell pizza. While scanning the menus, we each ordered 12 oz of Peroni ($7 ea) beer, which we knew was served from draught/draft taps. Our server immediately poured our beer at the bar and returned to order our food. Since the pizzas are made to order, we chose a plate of golden-fried and lightly battered calamari rings and legs (calamari fritti) to quell our growling stomachs. We ordered Barone's famous thin-crust rectangular House Combination ($28.99), which includes pepperoni, sausage, and green peppers, but we requested additional sausage and pepperoni. The medium size is 9" x 12", and we wolfed it down while drinking our beers to wash it down. We enjoyed our lunch at Barone's. Their Sicilian and Neapolitan-style rectangular pizza was the perfect foil to our post-horror/romance movie day. Kudos to our lone server, who managed to maintain his composure and humor while serving the dining room.

Almost impossible to find crumbled sausage in LA

Did they change the pepperoni? Last I was there they were thin they used to be the good thicker cupped pepperoni

Yes, we noticed the same besides many other changes like the salad dressing, the delicious sourdough artisan bread, even the butter. Everything has changed, including the delicious cheese they used to put on their pizzas.

    Is there an AARP discount?

As far as I know they do not.

    Is there a full bar?

    Yes

    No delivery

    Do you offer delivery?

Do they still have the spumoni ice cream pie? It's not in the new menu.

No the company that supplied the spumoni pie discontinued it.

Is this place pronounced Barone's or Baroneee's/Baroney's?

It is now pronounced: Barly-edible's(with angry servers & management complimentary!!)

    What crust thickness is best?

    Thin

Is the pizza crust keto friendly?

    No, of course not.

Any vegan friendly items on the menu?

Greetings I do not have their menu as best as I remember they do have meatless items. I do know that offer meatless lasagna. I guess it is how strict of a vegan you are. Hope this helps.

Did Barone's get new ownership? Or did they change their pizza? I remember it being more garlicky....

Not new ownership, but the cooks seem to have changed. The food is not as good as it once was! The owners no longer seem to care.

I made a reservation for Easter Brunch through OpenTable for me and my son. We got there about five minutes before our reservation at noon and the hostess told us to wait outside until they were open. Not a problem. HOWEVER, she never came back out to get us once they were open which was my first red flag because she left us waiting about 10 minutes past our reservation time. I go back inside to ask if we were going to be seated for our reservation and she asks under what name...mind you I was there before opening so she already had my name and time for reservation before no one else was there yet. The food itself was great but our service was absolutely terrible. We weren't checked on throughout the meal (again the restaurant was NOT crowded) and after completing our meal I realized the hostess deleted my reservation. For those who use OpenTable you know you get points for every completed reservation. I reached out privately to management first about my overall experience to hopefully rectify the issue. I wasn't looking for any incentives but that they at least train their wait staff better and resubmit my reservation in the system so I could both redeem my points and leave a review. It never happened. In an economy where everything is expensive just stepping outside I really value good service as well as good food. If the food is great but service is terrible I will never go back and this is that spot. Discrimination shows up in different ways and I will not patronize a business who blatantly does not show all of their customers the same level of respect and service. Posted pictures so you know I'm not a hater...food was great. Service was absolutely not it lol.

Maria's Italian Kitchen is very welcoming and a good size. Plenty of tables and chairs available for seating both inside and outside. They can accommodate a huge party like they did with us. Thank you to their awesome manager Jacob who provided excellent customer care to us on both our visits. Reserving this restaurant with Jacob was easy and very pleasant. We had an excellent experience both times here at Maria's Italian Kitchen. Our first visit we had Denise as our waiter and she was great. Thank you Denise. She made recommendations and was considerate and attentive in regards to food allergies as our child has peanut and tree nut food allergies. She made sure that food items on our menu did not contain peanuts nor tree nuts. For our first visit we ordered Calamari Fritti, Rosemary Bread Basket, Fettuccine Alfredo with Gulf Shrimp, Calamari Fra Diavolo, Chicken Piccata and Cheese Pizza. All our meals were freshly cooked and brought out in a timely manner. Portion sizing was just right. Denise stopped by several times to replenish our water and check on us. For our second dining experience at Maria's Italian Kitchen Jake was our waiter for our child's birthday party on a Saturday afternoon for party of 18 people. Jake was also excellent and attentive to the individuals with food allergies. He made sure that the kitchen was aware and informed us that none of the meals and food items for our party had peanuts, nuts or pesto. Thank you Jake. Our party ordered a variety of meals and food items on the menu. Perfect portion sizing and options. Some of our guests took their food home to go. We had 3 orders of Calamari Fritti, 4 Chicken Piccata, 1 Shrimp Scampi, 1 Large Shrimp Diavolo, 1 Chicken Marsala, 1 medium Cheese Pizza, 1 Large Carbonara, 4 Large Alfredo, 1 Large Alfredo with Shrimp, 2 Kids Cheese Pizza, 1 Honey Chicken with Fries, 4 Basket of Bread, 3 Coke, 1 brownie sundae and bottle of Peroni. We will be back here to dine with other family and friends and to book another birthday with Jacob in a few months. Thank you again Jacob, Jake and Denise for the delicious meals and excellent customer service.

This restaurant was highly recommended by my friend who orders here regularly. On my birthday my…read moreson said that he'll treat me for dinner so we went here last Friday night. We found parking in the back area and as soon as we entered we were greeted by the staff. My son ordered Pollo Siciliana and I got the farfalle al Salmon. I also got a glass of Pinot Grigio which is actually good. They give you a complimentary bread and an olive dip. I love the warm bread and the olive dip that comes with it is a welcome change from the ordinary. I enjoyed my pasta and the sauce is really rich and creamy. My son's pasta is good if you like tomato-based and not cream based sauce. My favorite is when they give you a complimentary tiramisu dessert. We were even given extra slices to take home. That's a nice touch that will certainly make us go back for more. They have a few tables and I would say it's a good place for a casual meet up or for families.

We parked in one of their 3 parking spots in the back and entered through the rear entrance. We were greeted by Aya who mentioned they were having some plumbing problems so we needed to sit in the front section of the restaurant. The place is pretty small and compact, with about 10 tables. It's family owned and been around for 25 years. The prices are pretty affordable for the portion sizes. Not much ambiance or decorations, but there was some nice Italian music playing overhead and some Christmas decorations that are apparently hung up year-round. Both Thomas and Aya waited on us and they were both pleasant and kind with nice smiles. Thomas quickly brought out some waters along with their complimentary focaccia that came with olive tapenade. The bread tasted old and stale and wasn't warm, but I liked the tapenade. Surprisingly, we were never asked if we wanted anything else to drink and also never got refills on our waters until I had to ask for one. I ordered the Italian salad with dressing on the side and I asked if the carrots that came in the salad were cooked or raw, since I don't like raw carrots. Aya happily suggested that they can cook me some carrots separately and bring them on the side, which is what they did. Even though the carrots were not really cooked that well, the gesture was still greatly appreciated. Other than that, all the ingredients were very fresh and the dressing was LIGHT, just how I like it. For our entrèes, I got the Pollo Della Cassa which came with chicken breast and mushrooms baked with mozzarella cheese, served on pasta with Alfredo sauce. ($24.95), with an add-on of shrimp (+$3.00 for 3 shrimps). I also asked for light sauce, not too soupy, and that's exactly how it was prepared. The food was piping hot, very fresh, and delicious. My son ordered the Pollo Limone ($24.95) that came with grilled chicken breast with lemon sauce on mushroom risotto. He was not the biggest fan of his food but still ate all of it. He also asked if he could get a side of veggies and they gladly brought out a medley of sautéed broccoli, zucchini, and carrots. We were not charged for the side of veggies and also the salad, which was very generous of them. To end the meal, you get a small complimentary square of Tiramisu which is a nice little treat. The customer service is truly the best part of this restaurant and you can tell that there is a lot of love involved here. They really care about their guests and want you to feel happy and satisfied. Due to some minor ticks here and there, I think I am going to stick with 4 stars overall. The restaurant was clean but just kind of unpleasant. You could also smell the bleach right when you walk in and sometimes the smell would waft through the air. It was also really hot in the restaurant and I don't think the A/C was working. They have one bathroom for each gender and they were very clean. I also asked for some change to leave cash for the tip, but Thomas told me they didn't have any cash in the restaurant. How can that be? Thank you Spumoni, Aya, Thomas, and the chefs. Will I return? Maybe, maybe not.
