Okayyyy. As we always do on my birthday, I wanted to go to Barone's and have their delicious veal parmigiana. It was always my most favourite dish there. When we got there and were seated. We all had the great pleasure of having Julian as our server. He is actually the reason for the 2 stars; they are solely for him and his great service and personality. The restaurant itself and the food we had really didn't deserve any stars whatsoever. My spouse ordered a full rack of baby back ribs with a baked potato. He didn't want to make any fuss in order not to ruin my birthday. I told him not to worry. These baby back rips were just beyond horrible. Dry, tough, and just gross. The baked potato was more or less cold. Then my dish. My usual Veal Parmigiana, I always have there. I don't know if they have a new cook or if he wasn't in the mood to cook. The "breaded veal" was tough and hardly fried. It was pale and lacked crispiness, as it was supposed to in general. And how it always was until tonight. The over-loaded cheese on it was beyond gross. It hardly ever happens that I am forced to send back a dish, but with this, no. I could not eat it, and for the price of this dish, I am entitled to receive a well-done meal. The same with my brother-in-law. He had chicken Milanese. The same problem. The chicken was non-crispy, pale, and totally tasteless. My mother-in-law's dish. Veal Milanese, same thing. When I talked to Julien, he was extremely kind and listened to my opinion about this meal. And I certainly didn't blame him. How could I? He said he would talk to the " chef". I decided not to have the same again, as it was offered to me, but decided to have Spaghetti Carbonara. According to the chef, the reason why they are undercooked is that, supposedly, customers complained that the veal was fried too crispy. Yeah, right, and my name is Mother Theresa. What a nonsense. The Spaghetti Carbonara, which is also one of my favourite dishes. It was just so bizarre. Watery, then there was SPINACH in it. It was also gross. I didn't want to give Julien a hard time again because of that excuse of Spaghetti Carbonara. So I kept my opinion to myself. We spent close to $200.- for our dinners, and all the food was absolutely gross. I don't know what happened to this place or if they got a new " chef ". The only positive tonight on my birthday dinner was the waiter, Julien. Professional, approachable, kind, and pleasant. Going back there again? It was not worth it. My wife and I live in the neighborhood and we have always enjoyed going to Barone's, but we have noticed that the prices have gotten out of control. Appetizers at over $20. We sat down the other night, looked at the menu, and decided we just did not want to spend over $100 for drinks and dinner and valet, and walked out. It's a nice place but the prices have become outrageous. But if you are looking to spend the money, the food is very good, the service is very nice, it can get a little loud, but it's still very friendly. Up to you. I'm 72 years old and have been coming to Barone's since I was a toddler. Tonight was the worst experience I've ever had. They were very busy but they kept seating people without enough people to take their your favorite thing I brought his dog carrying his dog in check. Am I getting anything else for you guys orders. We waited at least 30 minutes after being seated until someone came to take our drink order. Somebody finally took our food order. I think we were there for at least two hours! It's definitely a family restaurant. I got the Caprese with the special pizza they have with black olives and anchovies and didn't love it. The tomatoes didn't feel very fresh and the basil was cut pretty thick. The pizza wasn't amazing but it was a fun mix of toppings I think if it was hotter when served it would've been better. I was recommended this place via social media and am not sure that I'd go back. It's classic American Italian family restaurant experience. Sorry Steve Carell, I tried Barone's because you recommended their pizza. You were sort of right about the pizza. It was good but not great. We got the pepperoni with mushroom on half. I'd give it an 8/10. Sadly everything else fell flat. Barone's Italian Salad was bland. The famous stuffed mushrooms were also pretty average. The meatball sub was basically two meatballs on a half a sub. Again average and bland. Service was pretty good and if you like nostalgic Italian style ambiance this place looks cool. We only eat here because my friend's family always ate here. Do a pick up order - just get a bunch of pizzas and salads. That is the best way to enjoy the nostalgia and the food. The corner pieces are my favorite - thin crust. Pretty good. On the other hand, I actually was at the restaurant, and the other food is disappointing. (Why is the artichoke appetizer made in chicken stock??) I'm sad I didn't get a personal pizza for lunch. I guess they don't really cook at lunch time. The kitchen looked quiet and empty. Maybe they just reheat. The eggplant sandwich was gluey and tasteless. The pasta on the side was definitely not fresh. Good News: I was with my aunts (in their 80s). They had an easy time parking at 11:30am and getting in and out of the lobby and dining room - even with a walker. However, I'm not sure if the bathroom doors and stalls are wide enough for someone using a walker. read more

To the manager: I find it interesting that you wrote a great and warm response to my 1 star and sad rating of our experience. It interesting because it clearly feels like this was for how you look to the public , "acting" like you have empathy and care about your customers experience with really, really bad food, soggy pizza and a less than satisfactory salad and my husbands sad meal. What I know is that many people won't bother to take the time to write - they just won't show up again. Your "lip service" does nothing for me. You took months to respond and then suggested we give you another chance. You have not given me any idea of why I should do that when we live in a city with many outstanding places - and management that care and where their food is consistent. Too many things went wrong here for us to just exhaust another night and run the risk of mediocrity. I appreciate your sweet words but our impression isn't helped. Came here the other day and had a delicious Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo and Pepperoni Pizza. Garlic Bread and Sourdough Bread was delicious. Great customer service from the staff. The server was awesome. They have big booths and a nice bar you can sit at. Coke fountain drinks. This place has been around since 1945. Parking can be kind of tight during busy hours. Nice spot to grab a bit if you are in the Valley Glen area or Van Nuys or North Hollywood. I definitely recommend. read more

I love visiting old Los Angeles institutions like Barone's, so I really wish this experience had been better. First, the required valet parking is unnecessary and frustrating. One star off for that alone. There's plenty of available parking, especially on a Wednesday night, and many busier places nearby offer free parking. Maybe valet made sense at one point, but now it just feels outdated and inconvenient, adding an unnecessary up-charge. Second, I hate to say it, but the service was poor. I initially dismissed other reviews calling this out, assuming they were outliers--but they weren't. The wait staff seemed inattentive, and several requests were either ignored or not heard. On the positive side, the Caesar salad was excellent, and the tiramisu was a standout. Both were well-executed and memorable. I wanted to love the pizza. We ordered the veggie pizza, which looked amazing--loaded with vegetables and beautifully caramelized cheese. But the flavor just didn't deliver. It was surprisingly bland. Barone's interior is charming and nostalgic. It feels like a place that should still be a destination. But unfortunately, it seems to be resting on its legacy rather than delivering a great experience. I can't say I look forward to returning, which is a shame for such a cool spot. I've eaten here many times over the years, and the only item we order is pizza, as we found all the pastas mediocre at best. I brought a guest for lunch as she loves pizza. At noon, we were the first customers, and we took a booth. We decided on a large pepperoni, as we both wanted to take some home. We chatted a bit, and our waiter wanted to take our order. We asked for a few, and he seemed a bit put out, but went away. We placed our order, and my guest asked if they had a side salad, as all the salads were meal-sized. He was obviously Italian with a heavy accent, and had difficulty with the question. We described it more fully, and he said yes to the small dinner salad. After awhile, he delivered the salad, and later a very nice busser delivered the pizza. Our waiter, who was not at all busy, never came by to check on water refills, etc. I finally had to wave him down. We found the service very poor, and after asking for the check, asked him to send the manager over. In paying, we noticed the small dinner salad was $9.95, very over-priced. The waiter returned and said the manager was "unavailable", but I could leave my phone number, and she would call me. Never received that call. Never returning to Barone's either. Gave 2 stars for a pretty good pizza. read more

After watching a matinee feature of Nosferatu at Regal North Hollywood Theater, my relatives suggested having Italian-American pizza and beer for lunch. We eagerly agreed and knew he meant we were going to nearby Barone's Pizzeria on Oxnard Street, where we've eaten several times since the late 2000s. Upon arrival, we scored an open parking stall near the entrance of the pizzeria/restaurant. From the building's Swiss Chalet-like exterior, you'd not expect to find Italian-American cuisine here. The interior gives off a retro 1940s vibe. Upon closer exploration, our cheery male server explained that the building used to be the former Old Heidelberg Restaurant and Matterhorn Chef (Swiss) restaurant. Also, he said that a scene from the 1982 movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High was filmed in their main dining room. Another fun fact we learned about Barone's Pizzeria is that they were the first restaurant in Los Angeles and Southern California to sell pizza. While scanning the menus, we each ordered 12 oz of Peroni ($7 ea) beer, which we knew was served from draught/draft taps. Our server immediately poured our beer at the bar and returned to order our food. Since the pizzas are made to order, we chose a plate of golden-fried and lightly battered calamari rings and legs (calamari fritti) to quell our growling stomachs. We ordered Barone's famous thin-crust rectangular House Combination ($28.99), which includes pepperoni, sausage, and green peppers, but we requested additional sausage and pepperoni. The medium size is 9" x 12", and we wolfed it down while drinking our beers to wash it down. We enjoyed our lunch at Barone's. Their Sicilian and Neapolitan-style rectangular pizza was the perfect foil to our post-horror/romance movie day. I've been coming to Barone's for decades. It's old school, unique and delicious. It had been a while since we visited since we'd moved out of the San Fernando Valley a few years back, but nothing can prevent Sunday night from being pizza night, and we thought we'd venture back into the old stomping grounds and see if it's what we remembered. It was! We love the old-school Valley/Italian restaurant vibe. One might expect a place like this to feel run down with the decor and old-style booths and tables, but it was as if the place had just opened. Everything was "shiny" and comfortable. The place was also packed on a Sunday. (At least in the dining room they had open. We ordered a medium pie with garlic, onions and tomatoes (extra crispy), and an individual pineapple pizza. (Pineapple pizza naysayers need not apply.) We love the square pies with crispy edges...sort of Sicilian and slightly Detroit style, but really unique, crispy and delicious. It tasted just like the first time I'd had it decades earlier. The house salad we had with it was enough for 3 of us, with a generous amount of non-lettuce items to keep it interesting. Service was friendly and fast. Prices are reasonable. I hope Barone's goes on forever. read more

We made the mistake of going there yesterday. When we got there, the restaurant was only half full or less, but it took a long time to get someone to help us. As a matter of fact there were two servers arguing with each other to see which one would have to help the new customers (us). When we finally got help, we had to ask for everything more than one time. Service was almost nonexistent. My son had to go to the bar in order to get the drinks we wanted, because we had waited such a long time without them. My son got them and then the server got angry because I guess he wasn't going to get a tip from that particular purchase at the bar. All of the food dishes, every single one of them, was just awful and we couldn't eat them. The exception was one of the pizzas was mediocre at best. Also, you can't email them any comments. I went to Barone's with my coworkers and it did not disappoint. There were 10 of us there and we all enjoyed the food and service there. The restaurant itself has a very cool vibe inside. Very spacious and has an old school vibe to it. The manager Teresa was amazing, made sure everything went well for us. I ordered the Margarita pizza and added sauce on it and it was delicious. Did not have to wait long and our servers made sure to check on us regularly and refill our drinks when needed. The bartender Alex was great as well. Just as a heads up they only have valet parking. Overall, a very positive experience, if you're in the area I highly recommend. read more

Restaurant was nice, decor reminded me of those old school Italian restaurants. Food was a little pricey. Pizza was not that good, crust tasted like it was just microwaved. The lasagna had way too much ricotta cheese. They charged us $3 extra for a tablespoon of mozzarella cheese for our salad but the server didn't inform us of the extra charge. The bus boy kept bringing us wrong dishes that belonged to other tables. Restaurant only offers valet parking for $8 and there isn't a lot of street parking available. Staff was friendly. read more

Remember eating at the original Baroni's on Riverside Drive before it burned down. I always liked the food there so I thought we'd give this one a shot although it has been quite a few years since we ate at the original. Unfortunately, the food was not as good as I remember. Maybe my younger taste buds were not as developed but the food here was marginal at best. We ordered the pizza which I remembered was always really good and it tasted extremely bland. It seemed like they overpowered it with their sauce. The fettuccine Alfredo was playing and had very little flavor as well. I hate writing this review because 1. I am a small business owner and rely on reviews to keep my business going 2. Barone's WAS one of my all time favorite restaurants and 3. We did give the management fair warning that there were several issues with our service and meal and almost nothing was done. We went for dinner last night (a Sunday) and the restaurant was pretty empty (the rain was probably an issue). Also, I would like to say, we are going out, we appreciate everyone's time and know that not everything can be perfect. It is part of the charm and understanding and we are very reasonable. However, we realized that we had waited an hour (our reservation was at 6:30pm) we had drinks immediately but upon finishing them, we waited another hour before I very politely went to the hostess (our server was not coming to the table, despite trying to get her attention), and asked if I could speak with her. I wanted to do this discreetly, since there were other people at the stand. She insisted that I speak to her there, so I let her know we are long time customers and realize something may be off, we are very thirsty (and hungry) if she could assist us. Her response was that they were short a server, due to an accident, (very sorry to hear that, again as a business owner I understand) and that she was aware the service was not going to be on par. And then, she just stopped talking. I said, ok... Should we leave? Can we get more water? What is the next step, because just sitting there waiting longer was not going to work. A manager overheard (who I thought was a customer) and he asked where we were sitting and our drinks came soon after. Then, another employee came to the table to ask what we needed/ and what the issues were. We explained that the pizza was prepared wrong and that one dish never arrived. The pizza that was wrong, she didn't offer to remake, or apologize, just the explanation that the server wrote it correctly and the cooks messed it up. I appreciate that, but the correct order, or even asking us for the next step would have been best. It was all just so uncomfortable. When I passed the address on to our friends that were meeting us there, I explained that this is an old place, with tons of character and amazing food. None of that was true last night and I have a hard time seeing how it could be any different, even under different circumstances. Eating out is a lot these days, life is a lot these days but I wish I would have read a review like mine before making our dinner plans. Stick with their delicious Pizza, I decided to give their Veal Parm a try and out comes my watery plate, the pasta sauce was terrible and the Veal was hidden by that cheese. I came with a large group for a birthday party and left wondering how a restaurant can get so many basics wrong. Let's start with the service. The waiter didn't know how to take an order, got confused by simple drinks, and only cleared the table when asked. Not a great start for a celebration. Apetizer Cocktail shrimp arrived wet and almost still frozen. The sauce tasted like it came straight from a bottle, but was passable. My friend ordered a Caesar salad, and the waiter asked if she wanted Caesar dressing. Seriously? I ordered the full rack of lamb chops. They came overcooked and incredibly salty, with a reduced sauce somehow even saltier. The vegetables on the side were bland, with zero seasoning or butter. Their weird bright colors made it pretty obvious they came straight from the freezer. I asked for a baked potato--what I got was a burnt, overcooked rock. Asked for another: slightly better, still overcooked. They added a scoop of mashed potatoes, and those were a disaster too--full of skin, weird texture, odd blender taste. How do you mess up both baked and mashed potatoes? For a birthday dinner, this was embarrassing. The kitchen doesn't seem to care, the staff isn't trained, and the food doesn't justify the price. I don't like writing negative reviews, but people deserve the warning: this place is not ready for customers. If you're the boss, please rethink and revise your methods. read more

It was a hot humid day and my neighbor really wanted italian but I was hesitant, as it sounded it too heavy. I am sure am glad I took his recommendation for Barones. We arrived at 5 pm and sat at the bar when we found out it was Happy Hour. 50 percent off a selection of apps and one dollar of draft Peroni. WOW. I was not expecting to be so impressed! The calamari was amazing, also recommend the veggie ravioli, artichokes, very garlicky broccoli, and franks pizza. Also, the service was top notch as it was my first time to Barone's and we were welcomed and they explained thoroughly about the menu. This place is old school cool, like Smokehouse meets Lil Toni's. Service was perfect, food was fantastic. Dirty martinis were excellent & not too expensive $13 I believe. But ofc we ordered non well gin & they were $15. I had the spaghetti in meat sauce added a salad, both were good - spaghetti and meat sauce were excellent BUT 20.99 for literally just a plate of pasta & meat sauce is crazy! And with the added salad my total was $27.99. That's expensive, good food but crazy expensive. The pizza looked scrumptious and more wallet friendly. Does come with complimentary bread which was warm & yummy. Valet is $8, so find street parking if you can. And they have Spumoni (which I love) but again, expensive, one scoop was $7. I only tried Barone's because it was used in one of my favourite films, "Fast Times At Ridgemont High", as Rat and Stacy's date restaurant. Though unnamed in the film, the establishment is an erstwhile German restaurant, Old Heidelberg. When Barone's moved in, they didn't change the aesthetic, and it looks nearly the same as it did in the decades-old movie: dark wood, tufted red booths and chairs, stained glass. Though I was mostly excited to be in the filming location, I was pleasantly surprised by how good Barone's food is. The garlic bread is great, the sausages are tasty, the red sauce is flavourful, and the lasagna was a beast: a decadent hunk of their zesty sauce, pasta, and cheese. The small adjacent lot is valet, but there should be plenty of parking down one of the nearby side streets. It's a pretty safe area; no need to worry about anyone stealing your radio whilst you're parked. read more

I have been going to Barone's forever. I love their pizza. It's different. I like all kinds of pizza. However, the other day I ordered a small mushroom pizza and a coke to be picked up. The pizza is really small MAYBE 8" round. When getting the bill and the girl saying $25 I was like wtf? The coke was $6. Anyway, it seems like $25 for that tiny pizza and a drink is just crazy.
