I would give them a zero if I could. They changed the front struts on my car but threw off the alignment in the process. I got my car back and everything felt off. The steering was shaking, when I hit a bump, it felt extremely rough - I asked about it, but they said it was "normal". Normal, my ass. Took my car on a road trip the next day. By 2,000 miles, I got a flat on the highway. My front tires were bald!! Turns out the alignment was off and adjustments needed to be made to the caster, camber, and toe. I went back to James Shin to let him know, and he claims none of it was his fault. He refused to reimburse us anything, and laughed at my situation. He charged me over $700 (which is a discount because my dad is good friends with him... Except they aren't anymore. My parents and son were with me on the trip - of the tire has blown, we could all been killed!) And I had to put another $600 into it with new tires and the work the other shop did for us on the road. Again, because my dad was friends with him, they have done other work on our family cars. Something always comes back off, but my dad kept going because they did it "cheaper". Screw that. This is your life and an expensive piece of machinery. Don't let him touch your car. He will screw it up so you have to come back to him again! read more

We did not have a good experience. We had the car towed and when we picked it up the charge was $70. for ????? Since we did speak the same language, the best we could figure out from the hand motions was a fuse was either bad or had popped out. There was no receipt or documentation for the work done. (We thought it was a fuse before it was worked on.) 2 days later the problem happened again. I phoned but due to the language issue I have no idea if what I said was understood. When the tow truck arrived the driver checked the fuses, pulled out a bad fuse, and replaced it. It took him 5 mins. And the cost of the fuse is less than $1. The car started and runs just fine. We would have gone back to Barrington Shins to ask for either a better explanation of the work that had been done or a refund but we still don't speak the same language. In two occasions he didn't charge me a thing because he found it easy to be fixed. Another times after his checked with the car brake pad he told me The car is still good for another 10,000 miles before need to be changed. Having Mr. Shin as a mechanic means that I do not ever have to worry about car repairs: if something is wrong he will fix it, and if nothing is wrong he will say so. He is honest, competent, and reliable. On numerous occasions he has charged me very little (and sometimes nothing!) to fix problems that the dealership said would cost hundreds. This is the only place I trust to work on my car. I brought my Toyota to the dealership because I had a coupon for an oil change and asked them to check out the squeaks when I brake. They saw how young I was (20 yrs old at that time) and tried to take advantage of me saying that my car was on the brink of being ruined, that my brakes could fail at any moment and that I could die due to brake failure if I didn't immediately get my brakes fixed through the dealership. They said "I don't know who installed your brakes but they installed he wrong ones and your brakes will fail very soon". They even said "well, it's usually $1,500 but we can fix it for $900 if you leave it here today". I wasn't buying their story and brought it to Shin's Auto.They took their time and came to the conclusion that the squeaks were just from rust (not dangerous, just noisy). They also told me that was literally no way to install "wrong brakes" into a car, it just doesn't work like that. Obviously, the dealership wanted to make a quick buck and tried to take advantage of my age and naivety. I've never experienced that at Barrington Shin's. They are always very honest and will never try to make a quick buck off of you. If they charge for something, it's because your car NEEDED it, not just because they felt like making some money. The guys here are humble and great at what they do. read more

If ever you need your car fixed and you are in Streamwood, DO NOT go to Barrington Shins Auto. I had AC system problem and tried to find good mechanic around the area, but just figured out the reviews here are not quite reliable. He is just fishing around the first time customers. He just lured me through the phone to take my car to his autoshop for free diagnosis and I ended up with $100 AC recharge for nothing. AC system still doesn't work after the service. He didn't want me to give me a refund for that. and I am now trying to put a claim through my bank right now. Be aware of this Barrington Shins Autoautoshop guys. read more

I have been taking my car to Barrington Shin Auto repair in Streamwood for the past 5yrs, like all the other reviews, I have to say he is the most honest auto repair man i have ever met. On numerous occasions i have taken my car and my wife's car to him and only him, oil change, brakes, tire changes, and few other expensive stuff replaced. If i had taken it to a dealership or firestone,midas all these other auto repair shops they would've ripped me off. On one occasion i was having problems w/ my brakes they were grinding a little, i took it to another mechanic he came right out and said you have to replace both of your front brakes and would cost me about $400. I told him to hold off and took it to Barrington Shin, Mr.Shin test drove my car, brought it inside the shop and elevated it, looked at both the brakes, and he said the front driver side brakes are fine, but the passenger side needs brakes but no need to replace it for a while, so he took the brake apart smoothed it out put it back on, and told me to test drive and when i took it for a spin, no grinding , no noise, and very smooth, and he didnt even charge me for it, he said don't worry about it, i felt bad and i offered him money, he wouldn't take it. I was in and out within 30mins. I have referred so many of my friends, coworkers, so far everyone is so happy with him...no complaints whatsoever. This was done about a year ago, my brakes are still working fine and haven't replaced it yet. He's very friendly, explains everything so you understand, if you don't need it, he will tell you, i live in Downtown but i drive all the way down to Streamwood, because i like their service and most importantly he's very honest.
