Service was absolutely awful and it's a sin to call what they serve "Mexican food". No one greeted us when we entered. After standing there for about 30 seconds the bartender yelled, "Yeah?!", like he was confused why we were there. The attitude was similar among the other staff. When we explained we were there to eat food, the response was, "We're really busy now. It's gonna be a while. All these people at the bar are waiting for tables." "Do you know how long?", I replied. The response was, "No." No. That's my answer to whether I will ever return or recommend this place to someone else. read more

I want so badly to love this place. The location is perfect and the vibe given is that of a truly authentic Mexican cafe. I'm not one to turn down alcohol, but after one sip of an obviously spoiled bloody mary mix, I had to send it back (which is unfortunate because 2 days earlier they made a mean Bloody Mary for my friend and I). With there being not more than 5 breakfast items on the menu, I would expect servers to know what is included in the dishes, however after asking what was included in the Huevos Rancheros breakfast, I was answered with a blank stare. I left my seat to get salt and pepper at the bar, and the salt was chunky. Lastly, and on a more comical note, Barrio ran out of hash browns and put French fries in their breakfast burrito. Went there with group of 8 people. We ordered 11 menu items and 2 of them never came out. Not a good percentage. I have an expectation that I get 100% of what I ordered not 82%. I had a jicama, cucumber, chile salad and it was bland. The chorizo empanadas were okay, but I have had much better empanadas elsewhere. read more

I don't know where the 3 star reviews are coming from but take it from a foodie this place is legit. Food is excellent...the only downside I can see from this place are the uncomfortable bar stools. I wish this place could do a little better. I was a big fan when it was Demun Oyster Bar and when that closed I was excited to try Barrio. We have been here twice now and the staff is very inattentive even when the place is empty. We waited for almost 25 minutes since sitting down for a drink. We ordered spicy margaritas and they were amazing. A lot of times when I order these at Mexican restaurants the bartender either can't make one or they don't make it spicy, the one at Barrio was amazing. The food took a while as well once we finally got our waiter to order. The food and drinks here are really good which has brought us back twice but this place could be amazing with more attentiveness from the staff. read more

Decided to stop in for a late Mother's Day celebration, the drinks and food were amazing and creative! The chili lime wings were a great start to our meal and honestly wouldn't mind getting them as my meal next time! They were so tender and flavorful all in a bite size portion! Each person in our party shared our entrees, we choose the Quesadilla, Chili Reno's, and Tacos! And I can't forget the best part the STREET CORN is out of this world! First of all this review is going to be extremely long, kind of similar to what Barrio's service is like. If you have 2-4 hours to spend I would say go for this restaurant. Otherwise you will regret going. I've been several times, not really sure why I came back. Service is pretty abysmal, out of the three times I've been, 15 minutes is probably the fastest it's taken for me to get a glass of water. Every time I've been there have also only been 3-4 other tables so I'm not sure what the hold up can be. Last time I went, I came with my dog who decided to bark 4-5 times. I was immediately told by one or the waiters that if the dog keeps barking they would have to ask me to leave. I don't recommend this to any of my friends and I don't recommend this to you. The only reason I gave this a 2 star is because the food is decent (I get burritos, tacos are meh) and drinks are ok. So again sorry for this rant that seems like it's going on forever, but just like this rant, my service took forever. read more

We had a fantastic dinner at this still-new Demun restaurant. A group of five, we shared several of the tapas-style appetizers. The chorizo tacos, double wrapped so that while eating the taco from the inside shell, all the stuffing that falls out, creates a second taco, (I never knew that), are amazing. Don't miss the street corn on the cob, the short ribs and wash it all down with a Mezcal margarita - smokey delicious. We sipped Mezcal and ate sweet and crispy churros for dessert. Came here to sit outside and enjoy the weather. We did that, but not much more. The service was terrible. We didn't get as much as a hello for at 15 minutes. Then it took another ten for one drink, ten more for the second, and a good 15 for chips and salsa we ordered. As I write we are standing next to the bar waiting for our check without ordering more food. We had to walk into the bar area to ask for the check, because our server never came back. read more

The bar is gorgeous! Your drink might spill since the top is uneven and needs to be repaired apparently but it's still pretty so that's one plus. Only two stars because I miss my entertaining "friend" behind the bar and the food seems confused in general. Huge for a restaurant/bar. Things seemed to be going ok in that department (at one point I was here a couple times weekly) especially with the drinks but now it seems there's no consistency so I never know what I'm walking into. the new people are apparently staff from stuffy Sasha's down the street....?.....yeah not feeling them whatsoever. Our 1st experience not too good!! Service was really bad. We had to go up to bar to order. we had grilled peppers and fish tacos. The tacos were 3 bites each!! My wife even made the comment "those are the tacos?" We also felt it was too expensive for what little portions they sere!! Also a rail vodka tonic was $8.00!!! I have never paid $8 for a rail/well vodka!! We know other Mexican restaurants that are better and service mucho better!! read more

I live in Demun and I'm fed up. Those of us who live here pay a premium to be able to walk to dinner (and coffee, and ice cream, etc.). The location of Barrio is prime, the space and patio are lovely, and those of us who live here are desperate for a low-key, friendly neighborhood place to grab a drink or have an easy weeknight dinner. (Louie is terrific, of course, but not easy or inexpensive... Sasha's, which has the same owner as Barrio, can be a bit of a scene and, with the spillover from Louie, it's more crowded now than it used to be, such that you can't count on getting a table.) Everyone I know was ecstatic that the Oyster Bar was becoming Barrio; we assumed it would become less of a special occasion sort of place and more of a regular hang-out. And everyone I know has been thoroughly disappointed by the result. The food is very uneven; I have had some good dishes there, I'm happy to admit. But I've also had some meh ones, and I've had some downright "this tastes kind of weird/off/bad" ones. (Their tortilla chips, when they first opened, for example, were laughable: they literally tasted like Cool Ranch Doritos. And don't get me wrong: I like Doritos as much as any normal human... but not to dip into salsa at a Mexican restaurant before my meal arrives...) And as some have mentioned, it's not as though the prices are particularly inexpensive, nor are the portions particularly generous. (I mean, I get it: I suppose the location is such that an inexpensive restaurant just couldn't make rent here, as much as residents wish for it.) But most galling was when I was in Strands getting my hair done a while back and a server came in to chat. She said we should visit b/c they had a brand new menu; the chef had gotten a bunch of recipes off a friend who was Mexican. Really? Really? I don't even have time to break down how insane this comment is. Worse than the food, though, is the service. The first time I went, the waiter was obviously overwhelmed--sweating, nervous, agitated, and actually almost irritable. (My dad has celiac and when he asked whether there was anything gluten-free on the menu, the server sort of clenched his jaw and said, "You'll have to ask the chef"--was my dad supposed to storm the kitchen? I actually had to say, "Sorry, would you mind checking?") But they'd only been open a couple days at that point and I figured the guy was just stressed and not well trained. It's been a year and nothing seems to have improved. I went for a drink one evening; first the drink I ordered (off the cocktail menu) couldn't be made because they'd run out of the mixer. Ok, no problem, it happens. So I ordered the white sangria. The server came back with the dregs of sangria--less than half a glass. They ran out, she said, so she would only charge me for half a glass. Shouldn't a server let the customer decide if they want to pay half price for the leftover remains of a drink or just get something else? To top it off, when I later ordered a glass of wine, the server knocked it over as she set it down, spilling all over the table, the floor... and my lap. Again: Accidents happen. But generally following an accident, one apologizes and tried to help make it right. This server actually laughed and said, "Sorry, but at least it was white wine, right?" And then she handed me a cloth napkin and I cleaned up myself, then the table, then the floor. And this is *representative.* Almost every time I've gone, a server was either glacially slow or consistently got things wrong or was rude or was inappropriately trying to insert themselves into our conversation--always something such that I think, "Wow, this must be their very first job in a restaurant." There are likely two questions you're wondering. #1: Why, if I claim this restaurant is so bad "almost every time I've gone," do I seem to have gone so many times? The answer is, agonizingly: because I live in this neighborhood and, as I said, am desperate for an easy destination! Again and again, friends in the neighborhood want to get together last minute; again and again, we say, "Ugh, not Barrio! We can't give that place another chance, can we?" But because it's so bad, it always has seats galore! The last time this happened we finally sighed, got into our cars, and drove out of the neighborhood. The other question is likely: "Is the problem maybe YOU, first-time Yelp reviewer?" When I read reviews that complain about poor service, I am always suspicious: I know what a difficult job waiting tables is, and I know what terrible people customers can be. I'm telling you: I'm quiet, polite, unassuming, undemanding. Last year after they'd been open a few months, someone from Barrio hand-delivered fliers to all the buildings in the neighborhood, claiming they wanted to be a neighborhood hang-out and inviting us to come check them out. We already had! That was precisely why they needed to drum up business! read more

How horrible- We stopped by for brunch on Sunday. The space smelled musty (need to open your beautiful patio windows) I ordered the Chilaquillias. What came out of the kitchen were some (Icy cold) nacho-like chips thrown on a plate (like they had prepared the plate the night before and put it in the refrigerator) and what I think was a cold vinaigrette poured on top along with and almost raw fried egg. That was it. The one bright spot was a very attentive and nice server. When I called her over to tell her I was not able to eat the meal, she handled it very professionally and said she would make sure to tell the chef and said "he needs to know". The chef turned out to be the sloppy guy sitting by himself at the bar the entire time we were there texting on his cell phone. When she approached to tell him, he did not look up from his phone but kept texting - then shrugged his shoulders. Never looked up. It's a great space in a great neighborhood- we were hoping to drive some business to Barrio, but instead will drive away- and fast! Barrio in Spanish means neighbor their advertisement says. What used to be one of my favorite, go to spots where I took every out of town guests (Oyster Bar), is now now a tacky joint where I'd be embarrassed to take my least favorite guest. Such a shame to see what used to be a hip spot with nice food turn into a (overpriced) cheap looking dive with zero authenticity. Really wanted to love this place, but the food just missed the mark for me. Had the ceviche, chorizo empanadas, and tacos (chorizo and carne asada). The food tasted bland, but I can see the appeal for those who want latin/Mexican/Spanish cuisine without any heat or much flavor. Had a margarita and the Mexican coffee, both which were strong. We live close and decided to order some food for takeout one night and they did NOT disappoint! My husband and I ordered the street corn and several different tacos. The street corn might be the best I've ever had, the corn itself is cooked perfectly and the added texture from the crushed chips was amazing. Among the tacos, the chicken was both of our favorites, followed by the daily special fish taco, then the carne and chorizo. We will definitely be making this a part of our regular rotation! read more

We went in tonight hoping to find our new hangout. Unfortunately, I really doubt we will go back. The drinks were fine but the food wasn't really anything special. We were shocked that the employees were really boisterous and happy to welcome everyone in and yell goodbyes but ignored us the rest of the time. Tacos tacos tacos!! I've been a on mad hunt for delicious street-style tacos and these are incredible! Came in for late night cravings they're open to 1:30am almost everyday! (except Sunday which is still midnight) I got one each taco and all were delicious! The tacos come with a green salsa that is approachable not too hot I'm sure intentionally reserved as to not overwhelm the majority of their clientele. The assortment of pickle that also come with the tacos are quite spicy just as a heads up but I loved them! As for beverages they have a great selection of mezcal and tequila as well as a full bar to accommodate all your favorite cocktails. Which brings me to how much I love their cocktails, they have something for everyone ranging from classics to the adventurous. I had an off menu Manhattan that utilized a tequila infused with chiles which was incredible, one the more memorable manhattans I've had to date. Can't wait to go back, they have breakfast available at 7am everyday and lunch after, these guys are ready to feed you and want you to enjoy yourself you can't go wrong here. The bartender and a waiter were arguing, everything was delivered separetly, the waiter looked at us with a blank stare when asked questions, the server commented that their own tables are too small for their menu style.
