Overall a great restaurant! It does get loud but that's the nature of the place. Good service overall. The one thing is we were seated outside and sat at the last table next to Salut... the waiters at Salut would come to their stand right behind us and slam the dishes in the bins, and kept trash there that really smelled... literally just a few feet away from us. NOT IMPRESSED...the guacamole is mediocre at best...needed either some salt or acid nor was I impressed by the chips. Asked the waiter what a 'torta' was and if the pork torts was like a pulled pork sandwich. After somewhat fumbling with the answer, he said that it was basically a sandwich and yes the pork was pulled. So, I was surprised (not pleasantly) that it was basically a fried pork sandwich patty with watery vegetables. The salad with it was good, though maybe a little salty. The potato sopes were not good, though our waiter recommended them. My friend had the mahi mahi taco (it was also fried) and was NOT impressed. This was for lunch and I didn't have any alcohol so I can't speak to the drinks...but that may be the only thing I'd ever go back to try... read more

Barrio is a trendy restaurant with a hip atmosphere with amazing food. Their salsa is good but I would recommend upgrading to the guacamole. Prices are a little high for tacos, but overall, it was worth it. read more

This is more of a bar than restaurant, with drinks and small plates dominating the menu. There are a few entrees but I didn't see anyone order those. Most people get a couple of the small plates, Mexican tapas, I would call them. I liked the portk carnitas and wild mushroom quesadilla I had, but my companions did not like the shrimp taco much. My husband, who is not a big eater,had to order another round to not go hungry. Also everything seemed warm, not hot, so I would fault the service a bit. I am so disappointed by the attitude of the bartenders the last three times I have been to this location. The first two didn't convince me enough to write a review, but after THREE TIMES of going and being snubbed by a bartender, I am now compelled to write this review. The bar area is not that big, and any of the times I have gone, there have not been more than 5-10 people at once. This last time, before even sitting down, the bartender said, "I'm going to need to see some ID's." I hadn't even sat down!! Let alone tried to order a drink?!?! I handed over my ID and without making eye contact the bartender made some snide remark about sting operations and underage drinking. I ordered a glass of lemonade and a water, my dinner companion ordered a water. She made us feel like if we did not present our ID's to her we were not allowed to sit at the bar. She was incredibly rude. Once we ordered our drinks, she brought a lemonade to my companion and just a water to me. I tried to correct her order and ask for another water, but I wasn't given the opportunity as she didn't ask if there was anything else we needed, did not ask if we were interested in food. I turned around and asked the hostess for a seat on the patio outside (which is small, but quaint.) She said it would be a few minutes but she would let us know. We waited at the bar for about 15 minutes, which wasn't a problem, but in that entire time we were not approached by the bartender for refills, or ANYTHING, for that matter. Once we were told we had a table outside, the hostess asked us to please pay for our bar tab. I went outside to sit and wait for my date to pay for our drinks. It took him TEN MINUTES to get the bartender's attention. He stood up, pulled his card out, I left, all the obvious signs you can make to signal you are finished. In all, the bartender appeared to be a self-righteous, arrogant bartender with a rude demeanor towards customers....and this was not the first experience I had like this. The wait staff, on the other hand, was phenomenal and I really enjoyed the food. If only the grouchy bartenders hadn't put such a sour taste in my mouth I might have actually enjoyed my eating experience. read more

We went back! They've updated the menus, they now take up much less room, drinks and food are condensed to one double sided menu . They've also added seasonal monthly specials and added a new salmon tostada that is scrumptious and added many more options to the happy hour menu. Excellent Happy Hour. Great prices, great food selection and friendly staff. It's my favorite place in the 50th and France area if you want to meet friends for cocktails and appetizers. I haven't eaten dinner there yet so I can't speak to that menu but the guacamole was fantastic a long with all of their tacos. Our server, Laura, was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful when making selections and did not steer us wrong. We were even approached by the General Manager Tyler who was also helpful, and grateful that we stopped in. I'll definitely be back there and look forward to the summer atmosphere! read more

Ordered the ceviche, it was fresh and tangy, and even though it was listed as a 'small plate', it was MASSIVE. Easily could have been shared as an app for 3 people. House-made tortilla chips were excellent, so many crunchy air pockets! Pal got the cuban sandwich. This place has a great location, nice atmosphere and the servers are attentive and helpful. The cocktails are great, but the food is really bad. I've been here multiple times and will return for the Macho Camacho margarita but I'm done with their food menu. The food is bland and overpriced for what you get. Oh and don't order dessert; it takes longer to scoop ice cream than it does to cook 6 tacos! If this were a bar, 5 stars; but as a restaurant there is much lot be desired. read more

My four girlfriends and I go out to eat to different places around the twin cities and Barrio was somewhat of a disappointment. Dinner service was good and food was fine, but we were abruptly given out tab around 8:30. We assumed our server was getting done with her shift, but apparently they were closing the restaurant. She never asked if we were done or that they were closing down for the night. We went up to the bar for a final beer and the bartender was upset that we were asking for anything because she said she'd closed the door for the night. We said we were in the restaurant already and she said the place was closed. We looked up the hours and it's open until 10:00 pm, when we got back to our table it was 8:39 pm. We stopped in on Saturday evening and had a wonderful time, the place was packed, but the service was great. Our server, Dominic, was very funny, and he explained the tapas-style menu to us. We started with the Guacamole, which was great, the salsa could have had a little more spice, though. He suggested a few dishes for the 2 of us, and we ended up getting the Chicken and Black Bean Tostada, which had a fabulous mango salsa on top. We also tried Queso Fundito with Chorizo sausage and the Squash Blossom Rellenos, stuffed with goat cheese with wonderful heirloom tomatoes underneath. The drinks, though strong, were great, I tried the cherry lime margarita and Jason tried the house margarita. We finished with the Tres Leches Cake which was very moist and served with a strawberry sauce. All in all a wonderful experience, we will be back. read more

A group of six ladies got together at Cocina Del Barrio on a Friday night. We had reservations, they sat us promptly and, while it took a little while for someone to take our order, once we met our server he was *awesome.* He is the reason I gave Cocina Del Barrio four stars instead of three. We ordered drinks and some guacamole to start. The chips and guac are delicious. We ordered some small plates to share and one or two for ourselves. To share we had the crab empanadas and the queso with chorizo. The queso was very good (c'mon, it's melted cheese) and the crab empanadas were okay. I've been to the Barrio in downtown Minneapolis and also in Lowertown and both seemed better versed at making their food. The dough on the empanadas was too thick and overwhelmed the delicate crab, they were heavy-handed. For my dishes I ordered the cobina (fish) taco and a sweet corn and mushroom tamal. The fish taco was nice -- big chunks of sauteed fish with a nice pineapple salsa. The tamal was *awful.* It was like tepid dish water and tasted like soap. There was a mess in the ladies bathroom that I brought to the attention of one of the female servers, but it never got addressed. The service at Cocina Del Barrio was great, the atmosphere of the restaurant was a little cougar-ish with some d-bags at the bar thrown in for good measure, but it didn't matter too much to us since we were having fun in our little group. The cleanliness of the restaurant could have been improved and the kitchen staff needs to take a few lessons in taste and refinement from the Lowertown and/or downtown staff. I'd go to Barrio downtown before I came back to this location, but if I'm in the area, it's not a bad option, just needs a little work. read more

I've been here probably 50 times (all for happy hour) and have had stellar service every time. They have the best margarita in town and for $6 during HH you can't beat that. As a pescetarian I have really enjoyed the fish and vegetarian options. I have cheated and tried a taste of a couple of the meat dishes and I was unimpressed. The chorizo tasted to me like plain ground beef. The chicken tortilla soup was a disaster. I'm not sure if the cook was having a bad night, but the soup tasted like overly sour hot and sour soup at a Chinese restaurant, and the chicken looked like it had to be tofu. That said, the shredded pork tacos got a thumbs up from my party, so they can do meat well sometimes, at least. Also, I understand the sangria and margaritas are good. I will happily go again, but I'll stick guacamole and fish tacos. read more

We were very disappointed with our happy hour experience. About 2 years ago we ate here on a Saturday noon outside and tapas were great. This time we ordered margaritas, and three sips later they were gone. The gringo tacos were dry and not very flavorful. The queso fundido was ok. I don't know what others on here are thinking in comparing this place to Chipotle; did you walk into barrio expecting a 9 dollar burrito courtesy of Mcdonald's Corp? I, for one, love this place. I think it's a great addition to the neighborhood. It's clear that a great deal of thought and care has gone into everything about Barrio, from the decor, to the brilliant waitstaff, to the fine tequilas and great food. Sure, you're going to end up spending more than you would at Chipotle (um, duh) and there are other places that are more kid friendly (um, duh) but this is not why you go to Barrio. You go there for the excellent quality of everything you drink and eat, the personable service (great servers both times I've been there) and for the atmosphere (best on 50th and France if you ask me). read more

Terrible place. Small portions and over priced. You're paying for the location and that's about it. The pozole was watered down with very little hominy or meat in it. The restaurant itself is cramped and you're sitting on top of the people next to you. I like my dining experience to be intimate with the person I'm with and I don't need the people next to me asking, "What's that?" and "Is that good?" Very uncomfortable. Maybe that's what they do in Edina, I don't know. My girlfriend had a grilled tuna dish, which she liked, but for the price ($18.00) she didn't get very much. Small portions on great big plates! Boo! After 3 times going here, I can definitely say that we will not be back. The food is atrocious. The first time we went, I had the chile relleno small plate as I wasn't very hungry. It was so disgusting I couldn't even eat past 2 bites. The bf said his chorizo sandwich was pretty good. The second time we went, I had the lunch special which was spring chicken tacos served with chips, salsa and guac. The only thing edible that time were the chips and guac. How can a Mexican restraunt have such terrilble salsa? They have three kinds of salsa and not a single one of them is decent. Sad. The tacos were an abomination. Dry, flavorless..... you would think that the waiter would notice that I only took one bite out of three tacos, but he didn't care. Then tonight.... the rib eye. While the actual piece of meat was cooked nicely, there was this atrocious sauce mess on it that literally tasted like hot dogs. How can a sauce taste like hot dogs? I have no clue. I don't think that they were back there pureeing hot dogs, but that is exactly what it tasted like. I will never go back and am waiting for whatever 5036 France ave becomes next as food this bad can't stick around for long. read more

Stopped in on opening night for some apps and margaritas. Ordered the red snapper ceviche, carnitas and steak tacos. The place was pretty crowded as expected. It has a different feel than the Minneapolis and St. Paul location but seems pretty fitting for the Edina crowd. Food quality was on par with the rest of the Barrios, I just think it's a little spendy to make it one of my regular places. knowing how busy this place has been, i bothered making reservations for my friend and I, even though we were arriving at 5pm on a Thursday. the restaurant was empty, so maybe our waitress was bored. but we were gabbing as girls do, hadn't looked at the long and hard to read menu/drinks list yet. i gave the normal, "i think we need a minute" that you give when you're not ready. um, when i say that i don't think i literally meant count to 60 and come back. she did this several times before we were finally ready to order something, seriously conveying the "hurry up and order" feeling. so we ordered drinks (not necessarily what i wanted but i was in such a rush, geez!). still, the restaurant was empty. our drinks arrive. again, she asks what else we want to order. hello, we're still talking. "we need a minute" (maybe i should have learned my lesson and said that we need five minutes, since she's clearly timing us). so we order the guacamole, it's great (tiny), and hopefully buys us some time. no, she hovers. the restaurant is still empty. we eventually order a few more things (our food arriving at completely different times as other reviewers have mentioned) but all the while her checking in every two (or 60) seconds. not being friendly, certainly not hiding the emotion of "well this table isn't ordering $200 worth of food tonight so definitely isn't worth my time". anyway, we weren't worth her time. barrio isn't really worth mine. there are so many great restaurants to eat at in this neighborhood, i won't be back. read more

Disapointed! My fiance and I decided to host my birthday party here last night. I was concerned at first because initially we had made reservations a few days beforehand for 8, then before I knew it I needed 15. I called Cocina the morning of, and spoke to a guy who was super helpful and made some adjustments for my 7 additional last minute guests to be in their only party room- he was great! Me and most of my guests showed up on time, but we had to wait 30 minutes to be seated as the previous party was still packing it out (understandably not there fault). We sat at the bar for our wait and our bartender was bubbly and excited- loved her! We were finally seated and the waitress explained the tapas menu. Our server seemed not really there and not very enthusiastic (wouldn't you perk up for a big party to get good tips??). She also only filled our waters twice in the 1.5+ hours we were there. We ordered appetizers since our guests were starving by this point, guacamole and chips. The guacomole is FANTASTIC, but over priced for an appetizer considering. We got our meals, each coming out at differnet times as the server had explained. I ordered tacos, which the tortillas flaked and fell into a pile of quarter-sized sheets- so I ended up forking the substance of my tacos and ditching the tortilla. It took a very long time to get our check at the end of everything too. The restaurant its self is gorgeous and very clean. I loved the dimly lit vibe in there. Afterwards as I met my guests for drinks, we all discussed together that the food for them was OKAY and that it could have been BETTER. Bummer, perhaps my expectations were too high? read more
