The food we tried was okay. Nothing fabulous. Maybe we ordered the wrong things. The salsa was Fresh and tasty. The margarita was delicious and the service was good. It's a nice spot for friends to gather and they have a very nice outdoor seating area.

Happy hour margarita was terrible and had way too much artificial flavor, even the strawberry was fake. Bartender gave me a lousy basket of broken chips and the $5 taquitos had literally no flavor. It was like eating plastic. Black bartender also was acting weird, didn't seem to know how to do anything.

Good southwest eatery, lots of options, and tasty drinks. On a pre-game drop in, and coming off a nice nap, we tried Barrio Queen. A very nice catrina themed Mexican restaurant. It was just before lunch, but the place wasn't too busy, and we were seated promptly by the host. Our server, Valentina V. (Tina), was quick to present us with menus, chips and (tasty) salsa, and take out orders. She was on it - makes a mean guac. I wanted to try their tacos, and Liz did try two shrimp tacos that looked really good. Noemi enjoyed her kids chicken quesadilla, nothing too complicated there. Noah tried the Tamale Duo. The tamale duo came with one chicken in red sauce tamale, and one green chile pork tamale with rice and beans. He put a good dent in it for sure, meaning he really liked it. I enjoyed my birria enchiladas plate. The cheese and birria enchiladas were covered in green chile. It was pretty good, and I didn't leave anybody any bites. Tina checked on us throughout the meal, and make sure to take care of us during our time there. We left full and happy. I'd come to back to try their bar, and probably a variety of their tacos.

It was okay- but, not great.

Our first time and I was really hoping we would love it- my husband Loves Mexican food!! Unfortunately, it was a lackluster experience. Our server was obviously rushed it seemed, we ordered our drinks- we loved my husband's mocktail!! The tacos arrived and they were nicely presented and warm. But, they weren't the most flavorful tacos. The rice and beans were so bland- I thought why bother with the calories!! Yikes! Not the experience we were hoping for- but, sometimes you try new things and are disappointed....Darn!

Went on a Monday for Lunch and sat outside on the patio. The weather was nice and scene was pretty. -Chips and salsa are amazing! -Great iced tea options. -Menu is huge and full of options. -I added shrimp as an extra Add-on to my salad and was sad to see I only like 4 shrimp. - next time I will go back to my regular order of posole, the salad was not worth the spend. Note to moms: there is a changing table in the women's restroom! Feedback to Management: - lower the volume on the patio, it was too loud, like gave me anxiety while I was eating. - speed of service needed to be improved

This was a lovely, solid Mexican food joint! Ambiance is great when you walk in - lots of indoor and outdoor seating options with themed decor and a couple of tv's near the bar for sports viewing. We were seated after a thirty minute wait (dinner rush on Friday night) but attended to promptly. The free chips and salsa are bomb. Salsa is delicious and the chips feel lighter than most tortilla chips. They have a good variety of drinks and Mexican food on their menu. I ordered three tacos for $5.50 each (birria, tacos de tinga, and carne asada) and my boyfriend ordered the birria enchiladas. My favorite tacos were definitely the birria - very juicy and soupy, but the other tacos were flavorful and not bad. The carne asada tacos were very chewy. My boyfriend also enjoyed his birria enchiladas. It was a big enough serving that he was able to take some home in a box. Overall, a great pick in Desert Ridge. Appreciated that they also accepted a military discount here too.

My overall feelings about Barrio Queen is that there are some things to like and some things not to like. Overall, it's a pleasant experience, but it leaves a little to be desired. I've checked out this trendy Mexican joint twice: both on weekdays. Located in Desert Ridge Marketplace, parking won't be an issue. Ambiance (4.5/5): This is one of the areas where Barrio Queen shines. It's a large restaurant with a spacious patio, a bar that's partially outside and inside, and plenty of seating indoors. There are both tables and booths. The decor is really cool too, with a decent amount of Dia de Los Muertos stuff. Service (3/5): On one visit, I sat at a table. On the other visit, I sat at the bar. Service both times has been friendly, but a bit slow. And a pet peeve: on my most recent visit, I stopped by on a Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The restaurant was busy and I was told there would be a 15-20 minute wait. Before going to the bar, which is first come, first served, I went to the restroom. While I was walking there, I noticed that several tables were open. It doesn't seem like they were reserved. Why give a wait time when you have open tables? Drinks (4.5/5): Another area where Barrio Queen shines. They have a creative list of craft cocktails, many of which have Mexican ingredients. So we're talking a heavy focus on tequila, mezcal, jalapeno, and more. They also have seasonal offerings. On my most recent visit, I tried one of the seasonal cocktails that had activated charcoal in it. This was my first time drinking a black cocktail. So cool! They also have a solid happy hour with discounts off of both drinks and food. Food (3/5): On my first visit, I did the pick three tacos (love the variety) and some elote. On my second visit, I did the combination fajitas (chicken, beef, and shrimp). Fajitas are one of my go-tos at Mexican restaurants and I was happy that they are an all-day special on Thursdays (with a nice discount). This sizzling platter of meat is served with grilled veggies, rice, beans, green salsa, and warm tortillas. First, the good. The tortillas are warm and fresh. They are relatively small, and they only give you three of them, so I had to ask for more. The shrimp was perfectly grilled and a good size. The chicken and beef, on the other hand, were underwhelming. The meat was dry and poorly seasoned. Overall, some of the most mediocre fajitas I've had. And I know a thing or two about fajitas because I'm from Houston, where they were invented. Maybe I just visited on an off night. Given the ambiance, Barrio Queen makes for a nice date spot. The drinks are on point, but the food menu can be a hit or a miss.

    Grilled Quesadillas with chicken

This was my first visit to the Desert Ridge Barrio Queen. This location is huge with a large patio out front - great ambiance throughout the restaurant. I wanted something small-ish so I ordered the Grilled Quesadillas ($9) with chicken added for an additional $6. I liked the unique presentation: they almost look like three small, rolled up burritos. It makes them easy to eat and dip in the accompanying crema and salsa they give you. (I swapped out avocado crema for regular crema.) It's a little expensive for what you get but that seems to be the case at most restaurants these days. I was meeting a friend - the chip bowl stayed full and the food tasted good so it made for a nice place to have lunch.

Chicken Enchilada Lunch with rice and beans
    Judy L.

Hip Mexican street influenced eatery turning out tacos & cocktails amid Day of the Dead decor! I choose to sit out on the patio and enjoy the weather. I got the Lunch Chicken Enchiladas with rice and beans. YUM! This time the food and services was much better!

Service efficient. Super colorful cute decor. My mole chicken enchiladas were delish. The salsa was perfect for me ( not spicy).

This beer-focused bar isn't the easiest to find because it's underground down a stairwell. Look for the signage close to the stairwell. Ambiance (3.5/5): We sat at a booth at the bar. It's one of the few seats that have back support (which is important to me due to my old man back). Outside of that, it's all barstool seating with no back support inside. Outside, they have a small patio with chairs. That would be another option for me when the weather cooperates. The decor inside is your typical beer bar decor. Laid back. Comfortable. There's a jukebox. A cool place to grab some brews. Service (3.5/5): Two bartenders were working that evening and they were pretty solid. I did have to grab their attention a few times but no biggie. The Whining Pig has daily specials including a beer and grilled cheese combo on Wednesdays. I was curious on the price. They didn't know nor did they find out. That was a miss. Food (N/A): No food for me on this visit as I had dinner prior. They have a small menu, mostly made up of various grilled cheese sandwiches. They have a classic one, a pizza one, and a few others. I'm a dan of grilled cheese so I'll definitely try one out at some point. They also have charcuterie boards. Drinks (4.5/5): Now for the good stuff! Unlike most beer spots, they also have wine and several cocktails. But when in Rome, so I went with a beer flight. You can choose five beers of your choosing from a list of 40 beers or so. While they don't brew their own beer, they have an interesting selection of local craft beers and European ones. Flights are always my go-to when they're offered as they allow you to try out a nice variety. Added bonus: Walk down the hallway past the bathrooms and you'll run into Pigtails---a speakeasy owned by the same folks. The boys loved them, especially the Thousand Island sauce on the side, which they said tasted just like In-N-Out's sauce. My husband and I each enjoyed a glass of wine from the Happy Hour menu along with the Poke Nachos and Truffled Mushroom Pizza. The Poke Nachos are one of our favorites and did not disappoint. The serranos and sriracha aioli give them a nice kick without being overpowering. The Truffled Mushroom Pizza had great flavor, although this time it could have used a little more mushrooms and cheese. The boys enjoyed their chocolate milk and stayed entertained with the tabletop device while we waited for our food. Service was quick, the food came out fast, and we made it to our movie with plenty of time to spare.

The food and service were just okay, nothing standout either way. What they do consistently well is the beer selection, always impressive and a big reason to go. Even if the meal didn't wow me, I still had a good time. Solid 3-star experience

The waitress was so attentive and all food and drink was half off. I had the Bellini which was a heavy pour so you definitely get your money's worth. My friend got a martini and it was the size of two between the glass and the shaker. I love the ambiance here and you can choose to sit indoors or outdoors. Apparently it turns into a club at night with a band and indoor/outdoor bars. Well worth the value!

Blue Martini Lounge has quite the reputation. From several people, I've heard that it's a sugar…read moredaddy spot. I am by no means looking for a sugar daddy lol but I do enjoy people watching. I've passed by Blue Martini many of times. It always seems to be the most hype spot on High Street, a nice entertainment district in Desert Ridge. I finally took the plunge and checked it out on a Thursday night around 9:30 p.m. Parking is easy (and free) on the street, in the surface lots, or the garage on High Street. Ambiance (3.5/5): Blue Martini is definitely a bit bougie and caters to that audience. There's a nice outdoor patio which is where we sat since the weather was beautiful. There's a bar outside and waiter service. I briefly looked inside and there's a bar inside too, lounge sitting, and a dance floor. Blue Martini often has live music or a DJ. Definitely a spot where you can break it down on the dance floor. There's bottle service too if that's your thing. Service (2/5): Talk about slow service! It took our waitress longer than it should have for us to greet us. After placing an order for drinks, we received them promptly. After that we didn't see her again for quite a while. I wanted to order a second cocktail and she was nowhere to be found. Eventually she came around and I placed my order. I decided to close out right then and there knowing that it would take a long time to track her down to close out if I didn't do it right then and there. They also charge two fees amounting to 5%. Not sure what that's all about. Food (N/A): While they do have food, I just had drinks since I was there pretty late. I view Blue Martini as more of a drinks spot, but I can't comment on the food. They have a daily happy hour with discounts on select food items. Drinks (3.5/5): If the name isn't a dead giveaway, Blue Martini specializes in martinis. Beyond martinis, they have a large cocktail list. Plus everything else you'd find with a full bar. The drinks are a bit pricey (it is a see and be seen type of spot after all and you're likely to see old geezers pulling up in Lambos and Ferraris), but I liked the selection. I started off with the Blue Martini, their namesake. It's served with a blue glow stick. From there, I had the strawberry basil martini. Both were pretty good. Not speakeasy quality cocktails but better than your average bar for sure. While Blue Martini isn't really my scene, I can have a good time anywhere. If you're looking to turn up and dance, it's a good spot for that. And it's also elite for people watching.
