Went here for the 3rd time tonight. The food is mediocre at best. Most dishes that include meat are overfilled with non-meat ingredients. The food is bland. I have liked the mole enchiladas on one visit. The staff is super busy. The biggest irritation I had was the kids menu says for $6.95 they get a main dish, a side, a drink, and dessert. When we requested dessert the staff said it's $1 more per child. It's not a money issue but read your own menu! Chips and Salsa with drinks with friends it's great. Finally! We have been hungry for a good Mexican restaurant in this area and Barrio Queen did not disappoint. As all the reviewers have said- it is popular and busy. We arrived just before 6- earlier than I wanted to -so as to get a table and to take advantage of happy hour specials. The wait was an hour and happy hour is non existent on the weekends. Oh well- at least we were the lucky ones that found seats at the bar. The bartenders were attentive and friendly, but drinks are pricey. The noise level for such a busy place is decent- you can actually hear each other! The decor is quite nice and the outside seating is really pretty. We got to here at 530pm and waited an hour for a table for 3. The drinks were good, but the food was better. The portions are larger and it had real flavor. They didn't play it safe like some Mexican restaurants do and make bland food. I had the pollo en crema verde, super tasty and cheesy. The mole enchiladas were hearty. The AZ burrito had tender meat, but that one did lack a bit of salt. And our waiter was sweet, I was amused every time he walked by with his little cart to make fresh guac. I was planning on meeting my friend to eat here with my service dog in training. The state of Arizona allows any service dog in training in public places although the facility may state no pets allowed. While I was waiting for my freind to arrive, I was heavily doubted by a manger named Jeremy. He assumed my dog was not an actual service dog. Assuring him that she was a service dog he quickly declared that she was not and asked me to leave. I find it incredibly disrespectful as the state law permits me and my dog to travel to public places without doubt or proof of documentation. I asked my Bf where he wanted to go for his birthday and he responded "The New Barrio Queen Desert Ridge!" So what baby wants, baby gets. After making the whole Facebook invitation and such I rounded up about 15 people and called Barrio Queen a week out for a reservation.. BAM "we don't take reservations". My heart broke.. i knew the day of the birthday dinner my whole day would have to be focused on extreme early arrival. So fast forward to the day of the gathering: I arrived around 2PM(dinner was at 7:30p) to drop off a cake and some balloons and talked to the ladies in person.. still there was nothing they could do about any type of potential reservation. So I left and arrived back at 6:30 as they suggested(an hour prior to our desired seating time) and waited. As all of our guests arrived we noticed there was a nice smaller party/ banquet room off to the right and asked if we could just sit there. The room could probably seat like 45 people ok.. and there were a bunch of people waiting still also. So the employees said No and we continued to wait. By the one we reached 90 minutes of waiting, someone called my name... guess where they sat us? Yep you guessed it, in that same room. It took forever for us to get chips, salsa and the first round of drinks but our server ended up being super awesome so it was ok. I loved the food but the coordination was atrocious. I ordered shrimp tacos and the guacamole. I love the salsa and chips they serve and paired with a nice skinny chola marg is the best! Barrio Queen: Please be a little more flexible with your customers and accept reservations for large parties... without us returning customers you wouldn't be in business. I moved to Scottsdale 2 weeks ago and I've already been here twice. Both times I've been it has been fairly busy and I opted to sit outside on the patio. It was still 105 outside but there was a nice breeze and they have misters. The house marg is pretty good. Their pork dishes are amazing. It's extremely tender and juicy. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is for service...both times that I've been, I had to flag down my server for refills of water. Other than that, I've had really good experiences here. First time trying it with my whole family and we loved it. Everything we ordered was delicious. Everything was fresh and what sets them apart from any other Mexican restaurant is that they use authentic ingredients. You can taste the difference. The tortillas for the enchiladas, the cheeses, the sauces, the spices. We had a perfect table with delicious food and what made it an even better night was the service. Our waiter, Carlos, was amazing, attentive and friendly. He made the experience very enjoyable. Their mole sauce is out of this world and delicious if you like mole. Chips, salsa and guacamole are so well made! I took one star away because our server was a dud this time. He was slow in all aspects of delivery, greeting, water, drinks, chips and salsa and he didn't even make our guacamole at our table that made me sad because I brought a friend in from out of town so she could see it made and taylor the guac to her liking. Waste of time going here, we read the reviews and someone raved about their excellent service; so we decided to to give it a shot. We drover 27 miles for the worst service I've ever gotten! We arrived around 8:30ish and got seated immediately, that was the only fast service we got. Our server took forever to come to our table and when he got there he didn't introduce himself. He took our drink order and 10 minutes later he comes to take our food order and we still don't have our drinks he only brings water. There was a group of employees in the table next to us and he'd stop and talk to them and completely ignore us. I guess he thought we couldn't see him. It wasn't busy enough for him not to come check on us. We ordered the table side of guacamole, he brings his cart around and says "oh I need a knife" and leaves. I kept my eyes on him and guess what he went to go talk to his friends. Another 10 minutes pass and he comes back without a knife, opens the drawer on his cart and all the things he needs. Hmm I guess the knife magic appeared while he was gone. He was more interested in chatting with his friends than to make sure his table was taken care of. We finally get our food, eat and we're ready to leave when yet again this waiter goes missing. I cut him some slack because he had a table of like 14 people but half of the time he wasn't even attending them either. We waited for 20 minutes until we asked another waitress for our bill. They send a manager over and guess what she does NOTHING! No apology, she says hold on and sends the waiter over. Really?!!! Ordered two skinny margaritas and a margarita with the blueberry purée. After we finally ordered the food came out quickly. Food was good. We had the carne asada, Arizona burrito and steak ranchero. Our waiter wasn't around much. Would have ordered another round of drinks but never got the chance. Wish the service was better.
